Zuill Bailey is an extraordinarily talented up-and-coming young cellist. For this impressive debut recording, he has chosen an adventurous wide-ranging program well designed to display his brilliant virtuosity, his warm, pure, variable tone, his noble expressiveness and his fiery, unbridled temperament. Indeed, it must be his headlong impetuosity that tempts him to tear off all final notes with a violent accent. In the rarely-heard Francoeur Sonata, the slow movements sing in long, sustained phrases; the fast movements, taken at hair-raising speeds, burst with unrestrained exuberance. Splendidly partnered by pianist Simone Dinnerstein, Bailey brings out the grace, humor and delicacy of Beethoven's popular "Variations on a Theme by Mozart," and the romantic ardor and flashes of brilliance of Mendelssohn's "Variations concertantes." Chopin's "Introduction and Polonaise" was originally a bravura piano piece with a back-up cello, but various cellists have made "revisions" annexing the lion's share of the fireworks. The performance seems the last word in all-out reckless virtuosity, but is surpassed by that of Bailey's own transcription of Vieuxtemp's "Souvenir d'Amerique," originally for violin. A set of variations on "Yankee Doodle," it exploits every imaginable, and some unimaginable, technical tricks, tossed off with gleeful abandon; however, the piece ultimately sounds like its own parody. Bach's unaccompanied Suite No. 1 is least successful: over-phrased, broken up by too many accents, ritards and stops; besides, it sounds a bit rough, as if it had been too closely miked, a suspicion confirmed by very audible breathing. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Fine recording, both in performance and recording quality........2003-02-09

A fine recording of mostly standard cello pieces, done as a tribute to Mr. Haimovitz's teacher, the esteemed cellist, Leonard Rose, it does include modern 20th Century Works such as Robert Stern's Hazkarah or "In Memorium" commisioned by the Holocoast museum.
Haimovitz playing is moving and is finely accompanied by Itamar Golan. Recording quality is very good, if not quite demonstration class.
I first noticed Mr. Haimovitz as a locally based cellist, who had made a good recording of the Bach Cello Suites, which is fine though probably not at the same level as Rostropovich, Fournier, or Bylsma's recordings of the same landmark pieces. He formerly recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, but now seems to have established his own independent label. I look forward to hearing him live.

5 out of 5 stars Zuill Bailey is the REAL thing!!.......2006-03-21

This past Saturday morning, my daughter and I spent three hours enjoying Zuill Bailey's magnificent musicianship, personality, teaching tips, humor, and entertaining education at his master's workshop in Woodbridge, VA. He is truly a brilliant and polished performer in all walks of musical life, from performing to telling stories to teaching others about the music he loves. That same evening, we saw him as the featured artist playing an absolutely incredible concert with the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra. My daughter plays cello in HS, and we were both blown away by the amazing heart and expertise of this wonderful musician! We are now lifelong fans, and you will be too if you are fortunate enough to see or hear him. This CD is just a start for our collection of Zuill Bailey performances.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Cellist.......2003-04-19

I've been following Zuill Bailey's career for years and I am so glad he finally released a CD! His live concerts are brilliant, but sadly they come to an end. Now I can listen to him all day long on repeat! Zuill Bailey is such a rare musician. His playing is infused with so much thought and care. It is just beautiful...and when he lets go, look out! His technique is on fire! (the last track will blow your mind) It's hard to believe he's also such a nice guy! (I met him once at a concert) I can't say enough about this wonderful CD, this musician, or this human being. Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars What a cellist!.......2003-04-16

If Zuill Bailey isn't a household name in your home already, it will be soon! This is a fabulous recording. Every note drips with emotion and passion. I can't stop listening to this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Technique To Burn ..........2003-04-15

Please disregard "A music fan's" review. He clearly does not own this recording, and has some issues with himself. I however DO own this CD. It is a joy to listen to, and I feel it is one of the finest examples of cello playing today. Of all the young cellists out there Zuill Bailey has his own voice. Technically, musically, and personally. His Bach is second to none. Rhythmically it is fantastic. So many interpreters of Bach don't have his rhytmic control. Rhythm is everything in Bach and Bailey shows that. I've never heard the Allegro Vivo in the Francoeur sonata played so crisply and cleanly at this daring tempo. As a violinist I can tell you how difficult Vieuxtemps' "Souvenir d'Amerique" is. It is a piece originally written for violin and many fiddle players don't even dare play it. Bailey is superb in his own transcription and it makes for a terrific ending. A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED DISC !

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Bailey Makes A Gutsy First CD.......2003-04-15

I could say a lot about the entire cd. Covering over 200 years of cello music from Bach's Suite No. 1 through Chopin's Polonaise in C, he puts himself to the complete test of capabilities. But track 15 is worth the price of admission alone. He transcribed the violin piece, Souvenir d'Amerique by Vieuxtemps. It's a theme and variations of "Yankee Doodle Dandy." This is clearly an extremely technically challenging piece that he handles brilliantly. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes his signature.

I've had the opportunity of seeing Zuill play live. Speaking as a person who can easily become bored at a chamber music concert, he has the capability of keeping the audience engaged from start to finish. If you find him coming to your area I highly recommend you see him perform live. If not, buy this cd! He is going to be someone to watch for over the next couple years.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold was born in Vienna in 1897, son of the feared, powerful music critic Julius Korngold, and he died in Hollywood in 1957. A sensational child prodigy, he composed his first ballet under Zemlinsky's tutelage at age 11, and four years later had written an opera, choral, orchestral and chamber music. A major career seemed assured but was aborted by Hitler; fortunately, Korngold was already in Hollywood, where he became one of the best and most successful film composers. However, he yearned to write "serious" music, but found himself forgotten, passé, and out of step with contemporary trends. Worse, the frustration seems to have sapped his creative inspiration: he never produced another truly original work, falling back on his film material for his concert compositions. With one exception, this record focuses on his European works, some never performed or recorded before, and it is clear that though he was steeped in the music of his time, his style already carried the seeds that blossomed so luxuriously in his film scores: the rich, super-romantic harmonies, surprising modulations, arching melodies, and the incredibly lush, colorful orchestration (Zemlinsky, who himself died in America poor and neglected, must have been a fabulous teacher). However, young Korngold must have learned the sensuous, ecstatic rapture of the three soprano arias here (unfortunately sung with a wide wobble) from the decadent air of early 20th-century Vienna itself. The earliest piece is a charming waltz (1908-09); it echoes both Johann and Richard Strauss but is spiked with cross-rhythms. The Storm for chorus, on texts by Heine (1913), graphically evokes a tempest with jagged vocal leaps, trumpets, drums, shrilling flutes, then soars into lyrical serenity. Three orchestral stage music excerpts (1918-19) are lovely. The only American piece is the Cello Concerto (1946), taken from the film Deception and expanded into a full-length movement. It has all the ingredients of a major concerto: introduced by chords fluctuating between C major and C minor, two themes, one sweeping and passionate, the other beautifully lyrical, are skillfully developed; a deeply felt, mournful slow section ends in a flute and cello cadenza with shimmering harp glissandi. The finale is light and bouncy, ending with long scales on the cello and loud crashes from the orchestra. Zuill Bailey sounds a bit distant at times, but plays the extremely difficult solo part brilliantly, with total emotional commitment. Korngold reportedly planned to add two more movements, but he never did: another opportunity lost to fame and fortune, or fate and misfortune? --Edith Eisler
