I find it difficult to believe that Kapsberger's music has been so poorly recorded. It is a fantastic experience to listen to these pieces of lute music. Paul O'Dette plays (as always) beautifully and is supported by the immediate warm recording that brings lushness and crisp tones to the musical journey. Please bring back more of Kapsberger's pieces into the recorded repertoire. Highly recommended if you find joy in lute music!

Baroque Lute Music, Vol. 1: Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger (c. 1580 – 1651): 25 pieces for lute or chitarrone/theorbo, played on copies of historical instruments by Paul O’Dette.
Recorded in November, 1989, at Bethel United Church of Christ, Manchester, Michigan.
Harmonia Mundi USA, originally published as HMU 907020, now re-issued in the Classical Express series as HMCX 3957020. Total time: 69’27”.

Paul O’Dette has been, for many years, one of a handful of world-class lutenists, combining superb technical skills and high musicality with musicological research. This CD with music by the little-known Kapsberger, who apparently spent most of his career in Rome and was, in his day, one of the most famous composers, provides ample evidence of O’Dette’s abilities and can only be described in superlatives. The “Fanfare” critic quoted on the cover of the re-issue said it all: “This is superb music, melodious, with just enough counterpoint, harmonically and rhythmically cogent, nicely spaced with runs and trills, wonderfully apt for the instrument. O’Dette, for my money the world’s finest lutenist, does the music full justice, and the sound is first-rate.” I am normally sceptical when CD companies quote such praise, but in this case, the proof of the pudding was in the eating: A listening session in front of my loudspeakers had me enraptured. I am not a lutenist, only a fan of early music, but this disc (along with Lutz Kirchhof’s recording of Bach’s complete works for lute on Sony Vivarte) would be enough to turn me into a lute fanatic! O’Dette’s helpful notes indicate where to listen particularly carefully; and I also found it highly satisfying to compare and contrast the sound of the two instruments he plays (the chitarrone obviously has resonance bass strings, sounding deeper and fuller). And the recorded sound is absolutely glorious. The folks at Harmonia Mundi must have been in an exceptionally generous mood when they decided to re-issue this disc at budget price!

A very good Girolamos'set. The only problem is that the melodies are so monotonous cause of the variations of the songs and in the middle of the CD you want to change it. But in general, is a good one. Instead of this, uou can find a better lute master piece CD called the "early venetian music" or the "John Williams'Bach's lute suites" CD.

These sublime works by Kapsberger, masterfully played by Paul O'Dette, convey the immediacy of the contemporary across the years. The music sounds as fresh as if it was taken directly from Kapsberger's music stand. My only quibble is with that the lute and chittarone sound miked too closely. The sound would have benefited from a little more reverberation.

This amazingly inexpensive recording is
excellent and beautifully clear. Paul O'Dette is
superb as usual. Here he plays the chitarrone
(also called the theorbo): a wonderful,
deep-voiced stringed instrument (rather like a
very long necked lute). On some pieces he
plays the ten-course lute. Mr. O'Dette has a
very fine musical ability and he also has
written knowledgeably about the music in the
accompanying booklet. The music of Giovanni
Girolamo Kapsberger is certainly overdue for
revival, as is the sound of these earlier
instruments. This delightful recording is
welcome indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampler of O'Dette's Virtuoso Performances.......2005-11-22

'Ancient Airs and Dances' performed by Paul O'Dette on lutes and guitar, accompanyied by vocals from tenor Rogers Covey-Crump, violinist, John Holloway, lutist, Nigel North, and base viol player Christel Thielmann has all the qualities I like in medieval performances, with the bonus that even I, who has virtually no real training in either stringed instruments or ancient music can appreciate the skill with which these pieces, many by an anonymous composer, are performed.

I would probably not have bought this CD if it were not for the combination of artist O'Dette's reputation plus the recording label, Hyperion, whose relatively pricy works are always superior, especially for performances involving a small ensemble.

I usually listen to all music simply for the visceral punch, or in an attempt to educate my viscera to get more punch from an unfamiliar style of music.

While this recording does not leave my viscera unengaged, it is outstanding in the sense that it successfully involves my higher cognitive functions, which Mick and Keith rarely reach.

Very highly recommended as a sample of old music.

Note that the first track is clearly related to Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances. I don't know if Respighi drew on Uccellini directly or if they both have a common source, but the relationship is unmistakeable. The Antal Dorati recording of the Respighi suites is quite good.

After hearing the first track on the radio I was intrigued by the beautiful sound. Once I got a hold of the entire CD I quickly fell in love with the entire album. It is unfortunate that such wonderful music is not more widely known.

        Baroque ensemble Il Giardino Armonico take a step away from Bach, Biber, and Vivaldi to create this intriguing disc of lesser-heard 17th century compositions from Italy. These short instrumental pieces--Dario Castello's Sonata IV is the longest, at over seven minutes, while Monteverdi's Sinfonia de Il ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria clocks in at under a minute--were all composed during the era of Monteverdi's operatic output, and they each seem to mimic the drama and intonation of the human voice. But the young ensemble's creative programming doesn't stop in the selection of compositions. This disc seamlessly melds Tarquino Merula's multilayered Ciaccona to a harpsichord improvisation (there are also wonderful improvisations for solo lute and violin scattered about the disc). From the jazzy opening of Uccellini's weird Aria sopra "la Bergamasca" for flute, cello, harp, and citerone to the slow-paced melancholy of Giovanni Battista Riccio's Sonata a 4, there's a treasure trove of great Baroque music here. These left-field works sound completely fresh and vibrant, a testament both to the composers and the sprightly playing of Il Giardino Armonico. Highly recommended. --Jason Verlinde

        Do not listen to any unfavourable reviews of this album - it is simply one of the best of its kind.
        The violin, recorder, cornett, mute cornett, dulcian,lute, harpsichord and cello playing is first rate, imaginative and daring. All of the music on this recording is wonderfully alive and vibrant. The violin playing is particularly good and the two mute cornetts and dulcians in the Riccio Sonata A 4 make soft and sensual sounds - unlike anything you'll ever hear from later Baroque music.

        Every lover of Early Baroque instrumental music should investigate this fabulous disc.

        I can't understand the one star critic made by "a music fan from Italy". He said and I quote : " Every piece of music can become banal in the hands of "Il giardino armonico".

        I am surely dreaming.

        All the recording by this little ensemble are far away from banality. Sometimes deranging and extravagant, they gave to the listener real pleasure because they are playing without any formal constraint. The contrast and the diversity that whe can heared in their recording is the main mark identification of their ORIGINALITY.

        Enrico Onofri is brilliant as usual on the violin. All the musicians plays with vigour.

        Of couse, this is quiet music. Don't wait for little tornado like it was the case in the "Seasons" or in "La Notte". This is almost charming music with some moments of great intensity.

        I owned already most of the music recorded there with "La sonatori de la Gioisa Marca"( two albums on Divox Antiqua- with bad sound- sold at high prices with a lot of rewards from the press...)

        Nevertheless, I prefer this recording. Sound is suberb and the music is played by very talentuous musicians. From my heart, 5 stars.

        Every piece of music can become banal in the hands of "Il giardino armonico". We already know all the cheap tricks that made this group famous: sudden dynamics changes, bizarre rhythmical choices & tempos, and ugly sounds in search of an improbable Italian early baroque authenticity. I would like to point out here the very poor conception of phrasing shown by the violin and recorder, very short phrases without any idea of the piece as a whole, with a particular attention given to frequents distasteful effects, as for example in the Cima sonata (recorder and BC), where every cadence resolution is preceded by a disturbing interruption (ups, I got there too early), and in the unnecessary display of aimless virtuosity in Rognoni's variation of "vestiva I colli", knowing well the piece I have to point out I'm deeply conviced that the tempo should be slower and the overal caracter very melancolic. The violin playing is particularly weak, from a sound production point of view, please notice the trembling pianissimos, and the lack of colors in the sound itself and constant interruption of the melodic line (ups the jumping bow its alive!) . A high peak of poor taste in cd is Ucellini's La Bergamasca, where once again we are just abused with this kind of annoying cartoon music. The only good things I can say about the cd are about the fine playing of the cornettos (Jean Tubèry,Gebhard David), dulcian (alberto Guerra), and viola da gamba (Vittorio Ghielmi), so bad that the main part of the group (recorder,violin, lute) didn't listen to them, may be they would had learn something.

        Magnificent, the arrangement and interpretation! Italy and the 'Seicento' is arising. I recommend it for times with a glimpse of happiness.

        Listening to lute music provides an intimacy few instruments enjoy. With the CD in the player and your eyes closed, the sensation of the performer in the room, playing for you alone, is easily evoked. A feeling of being transported in time and place by the music comes readily. You might be one of the Venetian aristocrats who commissioned or sponsored this music. The music surrounds you with a seductive power, its magic conveying you away from the mundane to fantasy's realms. Listening to this CD gives credence to Pied Piper myths. The right music rendered by the right performer can lead you down some unexpected paths.

        A talent as fine as Jakob Lindberg's enhances the sensation of the performer playing for you alone. This collection of late 16th Century pieces from Venice represents a prime source of lute music for the period. By this time, the lute was firmly established across Europe as the vehicle of solo music expression. Venice, wealthy as a Mediterranean trade centre, attracted many talented composers and performers as the Renaissance flourished. These are not the wandering minstrels of an earlier time, but serious scholars and innovators. Lindberg's notes are a useful summary of biographies of these men, adding a fine academic touch to this CD.

        You don't buy CDs for their academic worth, however. It's music that lifts the spirit and the music of this album earns high marks for achieving that enrichment. Lindberg is peerless among lutenists, and this album a superior expression of his talent. This CD may be listened to in sequence while you read the notes on the composer's role of that time and place. Or you simply leave it on random and hear Lindberg's excellent renditions and interpretations of the music. Either way, his mastery as a player come through without impediment. As with the first of this pair of CDs, Lindberg gives the instrument its finest voice. It's a treasure to listen to at any time.

        5 out of 5 stars Italian organ music recorded live on historic organs........1999-07-08

        David Litwin identified six organs in Italy built from 1471 to 1825 and recently restored. He arranged for local organists to play music that might have been played on each organ when it was new, and recorded from one recording station situated where a listener might sit. The result is a recording that makes you feel as if you're in the church where the organ is located. The music selections are interesting and upbeat, not the funereal tones we too often associate with the organ. And since it's all local music, it's not so familiar as the Bach organ music we all know and love. A good listen.
