Once past the Impressionist-influenced works of his youth, Ernest Bloch's music is typified by two major strains--emotionally direct reflections of his Jewish heritage and an American-tinged modernism, often affected by neo-classicism and his lifelong devotion to Bach. Both of those musical paths are evident in this well-recorded disc of Bloch's cello music, brilliantly played by Peter Bruns. He fully captures the unbridled emotionalism of the Jewish pieces, inflecting the plaintive, soulful melodies with cantorial melismas, ably partnered by pianist Roglit Ishay. The three Suites, mature pieces from 1956-57, are tougher works, technically demanding and structurally complex. Bruns's playing here is stunning. He brings structural clarity to them, along with tonal and rhythmic variety and breathtaking technical wizardry. In the process, he rescues them from the fringes of the repertory. The Elgar was performed so beautifully and so was the Bloch. The huge pieces were carried with viruosity. Iserliss is a great player and this is largely apparent in the shorter Tchaikovsky pieces (Andante Cantabile, Nocturne, Pezzo Cappriccioso) because the phrases were so charming and you just let the sound of the cello melt in your ear. This is an awesome deal so buy it and be careful where you leave your CD because a minor scratch keeps me from listening to the Kabalevsky Concerto.

Like the first reviewer, I, too, was disappointed when I first opened this 2-CD set. Among the listings on the back of the CD case are the tracks for Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rocco Theme for Cello and Orchestra" and Strauss' "Don Quixote", which are supposed to be on the 2nd CD. However, on the CD, itself, is printed the label, "RAVEL: Chamber Music (The Nash Ensemble).

Well, turns out, it's the CD itself that's mislabeled, not the CD case; for upon playing it your realize that the CD contains the tracks exactly as listed on the back of the CD case (with Steven Isserlis on the cello, I presume).

Anyway, this is a fine 2-CD set, passionately played, with well-recorded sound. And for the price, it's an exceptional deal!

If the 2nd CD in the package was misplaced it was probably a packaging error - I doubt Virgin would intentionally distribute a recording labelled as something else. For either cello connoisseurs who aren't familiar with many of Steven Isserlis' recordings or a novice who wants a sampling of some of the great cello concerto masterpieces played REALLY well, you can't go wrong with this bargain reissue. The sound is gorgeous, intense, and there aren't many other places you'll find any interpretations of the original version of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations of Kabalevsky's powerful unjustly neglected 2nd concerto.

      buen trabajo de obras conocidas
      y otras no tan conocidas.
      El concierto de Lalo es
      interpretado de manera formidable.
      Las ya conocidas variaciones de
      Tchaikovsky, son aqui interpretadas.
      La rapsodia Hebrea "Scholomo" o "Salomon"
      es aqui interpretada con la delicadeza
      y ternura que requiere. Este disco
      nos muestra otras obras para el
      violonchelo que aun no conociamos...
      En este disco tenemos indiscutiblemente
      solo lo mejor.

      Leonard Rose es un chelista de excepcion y brilla como nunca en este conjunto increible de obras para solista y orquesta.
      El concierto para cello de Lalo es genial, una obra simple pero se agradece en virtud de sus delicadas melodias y por acercarnos al mundo del violonchelo. Varioaciones sobre un tema rococó es una de mis piezas preferidas, delicada, creativa y exquisita, es un conjunto de bellos momentos, de pequeñas perlas para disfrutar, sencillamente genial.
      Otro gran momento en esta seleccion es la rapsodia Schlomo de Block, es patriotica si se puede decir, pero mas aun religiosa, es sublime, es intensa, es brillante, verdaderamente una bella pieza musical.
      Faure cierra el conjunto con su sutil y popular Elegie, es una obra sencilla, luminosa y quizas sentimental, hermosa.
      La orquesta de Filadelfia suena como siempre perfecta y Ormandy al mando de todos nos demuestra su capacidad para acompañar al solista y deslumbrar con su orquesta todo al mismo tiempo.

      Leonard Rose was one of the truly great cellists of the 20th century. His constant attention to the beauty of tone is apparent at all times. This CD's collection of works in extremely varied styles is a testament to Rose's versatility and ability to be at home in all musical situations. One only needs to listen to the contrast between the technical fireworks of Tchaikovsky's Variations and the lyrical intensity of Bloch's Schelomo to see that this is an artist of intelligence and beautiful musicianship. One can also note the lack of affectation in the interpretations thus allowing the musical arguments to speak freely and naturally. I strongly recommend this recording. Excellent supplements to this recording would be Rose's Dvorak Concerto, Brahms' Double Concerto (w/Stern), and all of the wonderful piano trio recordings with Isaac Stern and Eugene Istomin.

      Excellent content and performance, but engineering cuts phrase endings thus spoiling the compositions. It makes for frustrating listening. Imagine missing the last word of spoken sentences. Most unfortunate and ruins an otherwise superb CD

              Once past the Impressionist-influenced works of his youth, Ernest Bloch's music is typified by two major strains--emotionally direct reflections of his Jewish heritage and an American-tinged modernism, often affected by neo-classicism and his lifelong devotion to Bach. Both of those musical paths are evident in this well-recorded disc of Bloch's cello music, brilliantly played by Peter Bruns. He fully captures the unbridled emotionalism of the Jewish pieces, inflecting the plaintive, soulful melodies with cantorial melismas, ably partnered by pianist Roglit Ishay. The three Suites, mature pieces from 1956-57, are tougher works, technically demanding and structurally complex. Bruns's playing here is stunning. He brings structural clarity to them, along with tonal and rhythmic variety and breathtaking technical wizardry. In the process, he rescues them from the fringes of the repertory.               Peter Bruns, a young Berliner and a devotee of JS Bach, has earned his reputation as an ardent cellist. On this CD, he is solidly accompanied by Roglit Ishay at the piano in an eloquent performance of Ernest Bloch's "Meditations Hebraiques." The composer conceived some of his most poignant melodies in these interpretations of his "enigmatic Jewish soul" and Bruns draws highly evocative sounds from his instrument, built by the master Carlo Tanoni in Vienna in 1730. Bloch and the two performing artists then merge the sonorities of Jewish spirituality with a display of baroque technique in a fitting tribute to Bach, via three suites for unaccompanied cello. In the concluding selection, Ms. Ishay joins Mr. Bruns for "Three Pictures of Chassidic Life - Contrition, Improvisation, and Rejoicing."
