Poulenc: The Complete Chamber Music
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Here's nearly two and a half hours of unadulterated listening pleasure. The chamber output of Frenchman Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) spans some four decades and more, from the tartly modernist cavortings of the very Stravinskian Sonata for Two Clarinets (1918), via the insouciant charms of both the Trio for oboe, bassoon, and piano (his first big chamber success from 1926) and Sextet (1932-9) as well as the substantial, deeply felt wartime sonatas for violin and cello, to the three sonatas for woodwind he penned in his twilight years (including the deliciously tuneful, deservedly popular Flute Sonata of 1957). There's a healthy sprinkling of comparative rarities too, not least the poignant little Sarabande for solo guitar (1960) as well as the even briefer, haunting Villanelle (1938) for piccolo and piano. Not only do the members of the Nash Ensemble bring an abundant technical flair to everything they survey, they also don't miss out on that peculiar mix of the frothy, madcap, and sublime that are such trademarks of Poulenc's inimitable mode of expression. The year 1999, this composer's centenary year, furnished no more rewarding haul than this immaculately produced Hyperion anthology, which must receive the heartiest of welcomes. --Andrew Achenbach

Customer Reviews:
extremely overrated.......2004-08-01
For reasons that I do not understand, Wynton is considered a player of the highest caliber. While his technique would have to seem impressive to most of his fans, in comparison to players such as Phil Smith, Charlie Schleuter, Matthias Hofs, and many other top symphony players, Wynton is completely out of his league. Wynton's interpretations of some of these pieces are laughable in their complete lacking of any sense of direction. Compare his recordings of the Enesco and Hindemith with ones put out by Phil Smith and Charlie Schleuter, amd it is like listening to a student play a piece for his teacher, and then the teacher playing it the way it ought to go. The only valid reason to buy this recording is the great programming. It's just a shame that it is not another trumpet player playing the same pieces.
Some nice moments, but..........2004-06-30
Wynton's playing on this album is, unquestionably, very accomplished and there are some really shining moments -- especially in the Halsey Stevens' Sonata and the Honegger.
As a classically trained trumpet player I must disagree with the other reviewers and point out a number of weaknesses in the playing in this disc. The Poulenc and the Bernstein, the easiest pieces are also the sloppiest. Througout the entire album, save the Chorale at the end of the Hindemith, Wynton uses, in my opinion, excessive and unmusical vibrato -- I feel it especially breaks the mood of the end of the Enesco.
The playing throughout doesn't do much musically interesting and there are better recordings of all the works here. I feel the Hindemith was just rushed through, first and last movements especially. See Charlie Schlueter's "Trumpet Works" on Kleos Classics for a much more musical Hindemith and Philip Smith's self-titled album on Cala Records for better renditions of the Enesco and Tomasi.
Overall, I really liked the program choice and some of the really good moments, but I think you won't find much here that isn't done better elsewhere.
excellent twentieth century repertoire.......2001-01-09
Another recording of Wynton's in which he displays desirable command over his trumpet. Although I wouldn't consider it perfection, he is truly a master of his instrument, and attaining perfection is no mean feat. He starts off with the Ravel, Piece en forme de Habanera, which is an exquisite work, originally written for solo piano, but Mr. Marsalis captures the expression and lyricism of Ravel's composition beatifully.
There is some very difficult music on this album, and Wynton makes it sound natural. The Honegger Intrada is definitely within this category. Mr. Marsalis made it sound so easy that I didn't realize the endurance it takes to play the opening lines until I looked at the music myself. Henri Tomasi is better known to trumpet players for his spectacular trumpet concerto, and he is represented in this list of works with his short and fun Tryptique. The Halsey-Stevens Sonata has become one of my favorite pieces of music with its wonderful thematic material, strong melodies and interesting rhythms. Marsalis is so good that he gets right out of the way and lets the strength of the composition shine, a task well done. Wynton displays strong performances of the Bozza and the Enesco as well, using the Bernstein and the Poulenc as short, fun pieces to provide comic relief from the heavier works found on this disc.
He ends it off with the famous Hindemith Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, a spectacular composition, which Mr. Marsalis plays with command. Wynton displays the intensity involved in this piece more than adequately. Although I somewhat disagree with some of his interpretation of the first movement, the second and third movements are wonderful. The album ends with the segment, Alle Menschen mussen sterben, or, "all men must die". An incredibly slow, incredibly difficult section to play, especially at the end of the entire piece. He pulls it off with control, not so much as even a waver in tone, and his is brilliant. Well done Mr. Marsalis! Aside from picky stylistic disagreements, an excellent collection, definitely recommended.
Great Job, Mr. Marsalis.......2000-05-30
Overall, this CD was excellent. Marsalis displays the art of contemporary music on a good note, playing such works as the Hindemith Sonata for trumpet. Also, from this cd, i learned of the Halsey Stevens Sonata for trumpet, now my favorite piece. Lastly, Wynton plays the Honneger Intrada, which had a section so fast i couldn't roll my toung and keep up...
Good CD.......1999-09-07
I like Wynton's playing on this CD. The only thing I didn't like about the CD was Pièce en forme de Habañera, where Wynton plays both trumpet parts in synchronized recording, it sounds stupid. Otherwise this is a marvelous CD.

Very Creative, Light Chamber Music.......2001-05-29
I enjoy all of this CD except for the Sextet pice. It reminds one somewaht of the soundtrack for TV comics, like that one on Tom & Jerry where the cat chases the mouse around, with the music scampering here, thrasing out here, lying in ambush here.
However, the remainder, Sonata for oboe and piano, Trio for bassoon, oboe and piano, Sonata for flute and piano and Villaneele for pipe and piano are very nice.
Fresh and delightful.......2001-03-14
There's no need to cherry-pick--at six bucks a pop you can easily get all five of these Naxos releases of Poulenc's chamber music. You won't regret owning any of them. That said, this first disc in the series is the best. The music is light without being lightweight, melodious with a splash of early 20th century "modernism". And, at over an hour playing time, there is a lot of it. Pass the Pernod!
Neat. Great Poulenc performance!.......2000-04-18
Repertoire here are all woodwind chamber works. With the idiomatic harmony of French music, these music is very, very charming and under a moony and romantic atmosphere. The performance and recording are both excellent. As this cd showes, I must say that Poulenc is absolutly an underrated composer. His oeuvre(especially melodies and chamber works) should be more famous. And I can not but waiting for the next cd of this series.

Parent's blessing!.......2004-01-02
I have two of these cd's. My kids are 2 and 4 and I bought the first cd when my daughter was a newborn. These have been a true blessing and most evenings, put ME to sleep along with my daughter as I'm getting her settled and to sleep. SOO soothing and relaxing.......just beautiful. The original cd had gotten a scratch on one song so I'm here on Amazon trying to buy yet another one. Great just to play when the kids are wound up just to sooth them.
A Real Snooze..........2002-10-24
This compilation of songs is most restful for both the young and old. I received this CD as a gift years before the birth of my daughter and I used it's calming effect while studying calculus.
While working in a daycare this CD had twenty 3-5 year old children fast asleep within minutes. Very cool!
I just purchased a new copy of this CD as the old one is scratched and worn out. I now look forward to sharing this soothing music with my newborn baby girl. ****I highly recommend this CD for putting your little one to sleep.****
WONDERFUL - if only it was available.......2002-08-19
As a highly active amateur cellist, this is my signature baby gift to all friends and family - all have commented at it's soothing effect when played at naptime or bedtime. This is a wonderful collection, well-played - BUT IT'S NEVER AVAILABLE. I'm now on a constant search to find used copies. I can only hope that they get back on the ball and restart production on this CD - so that all of you can enjoy it!!
Get two so you can give one as a gift..........2001-11-07
This CD is made up of instrumental cello renditions of popular lullabyes.
My wife and I have given several of these CD's to parents of young children in the US and abroad. Without exception, the soothing cello tunes help mother and child alike to relax at the end of a busy day.
Webber performs sensitive interpretations of these long-beloved classics, including Braham's Lullabye and Rock a Bye Baby. The cuts provide wonderful comfort to a stressed world. My wife and I listen happily while reading and sitting in front of the crackling fire.
We love this album and are ordering 6 so we have some on hand for gifts to new mothers.
Beautifully performed soothing, calming music.......1999-03-19
Julian Webber performs masterfully in this relaxing collection of peaceful lullabies. His technique is superb, and this CD will leave you snoring soundly if you play it at night, like I do.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting, and so cheap!.......2005-03-17
In response to the reviewer below, yes, some of the recordings do not have the best sound quality. But that's not what this is about, it's about great recordings of the century.
There are two discs, each with about 18 tracks, averaging about 4 minutes each, of excerpts and individual movements of the some of the most famous of the 150 "GROCs."
In the booklet it has a few interesting (sometimes not that interesting) facts about each of the 150 performances.
If you don't mind excerpts of pieces or isolated movements, this would be a worthwhile purchase, especially for the bizarrely reasonable price.
Not that great.......2004-11-19
If this is supposed to be an album of "the greatest" -- I wasn't too impressed. The quality didn't seem that good and the selections, well, not all that popular to my mind.

Customer Reviews:
What a wonderful CD!!.......2002-03-31
When I ran across this CD, I took a chance and ordered it. I am well-pleased with the results! Poulenc's music is wonderfully witty, and it's a real toss-up when it comes to choosing between the English and French versions. Both of the narrators are charming and bring lots of personality to the charming classic story. The other Poulenc pieces are very well-done; at these prices, blow youself to the complete Naxos set of his chamber music.

I love this CD set.......2000-02-10
I bought this because Joshua Kosman (an SF Chronicle music critic) highly recommended it. As with every Hyperion CD I've bought it is wonderfully done in every detail, even down to the cover art. In his review Mr. Kosman cautioned that this is not profound music, just fun stuff, beautifully played by the Nash Ensemble, and enjoyable to listen to. He is, as usual, 100% correct.

Customer Reviews:
The Young Horowitz.......2007-05-11
Vladimir Horowitz's earliest recordings, believed by some to be his finest, have been reissued numerous times since their initial appearance over 70 years ago.
This latest reissue contains some classics. The Liszt Sonata has never been equaled and is a must for any serious collector, as is the Funerailles. It's hard to imagine in this day and age that Horowitz's version of Haydn's E-flat sonata was a world premiere recording, but indeed it was. Its relaxed elegance continues to charm, and it remains more musicologically "correct" than Horowitz's 1951 live version. Horowitz was also an early champion of Scarlatti, and the two sonatas here are among the first of "pure" Scarlatti. The pianist preferred his Bach "un-pure", and the Choral Prelude as transcribed by Busoni is a miracle of line separation and clarity. Horowitz's early foray into Beethoven, the 32 Variations in C minor, is more straightforward and successful than many of his later attempts with this composer
Horowitz's early Schumann, though technically impeccable, did not quite plumb the depths as in his later recordings. So much the better then, that the pianist limited himself to recording shorter works, including an Arabeske with unmatched legato, an effortless Toccata, and whimsical Traumeswirren. Originally intended as the finale for Schumann's G minor sonata, the Presto Passionato was rejected by the composer's wife as unplayable. Horowitz makes it sound like child's play. (The piece is marred, however, by a clumsily handled 78RPM side change. Of all the reissues I've heard of this recording, only Pearl's gets the side change right.)
Horowitz once referred to Chopin and "the only truly great composer for the piano" and he invariably included a selection of the Polish master's music in his recitals. The sampling here includes four technically impeccable Etudes, three Mazurkas, and a remarkably up-tempo Scherzo in E major. Also included is a structurally solid first movement from Chopin's b-flat Sonata, which was never completed due to Horowitz's first retirement. Had fate not intervened, this would have been one of the great recordings of the piece.
Horowitz also championed "modern" composers like Rachmaninoff, Poulenc and Prokofiev. It says much about the changing mores of performing that Horowitz (often condemned these days for violating composers' intentions) received nothing but praise from the many composers he knew personally. Prokofiev's Toccata, intended as a filler for Rachmaninoff's Third Piano concerto, was replaced at the last moment in favor of Rachmaninoff's G minor Prelude (a rather sloppy performance). The irony of the two Russian composers sharing an album could not have been lost on Horowitz, given how they disliked each other.
Though advertised as all new transfers from optimum sources, the remastering here sounds suspiciously like EMI's 1990s Horowitz issue (which would explain the bad side change in the Presto Passionato). The sound heavily favors the midrange, the highs are a bit capped, and the bass has very little depth. Unless you have your heart set on the Chopin Sonata movement and Prokofiev Toccata, go with the Pearl.

This is my favorite of the series if that's possible.......2002-05-10
I discovered the music of Francis Poulenc quite by accident when I was a youngster when I heard his Model Animals on the radio. I bought an old Columbia Records recording of the composer playing and conducting some of the works on this CD. A good mixure of small group playing and duo piano compositions which I think I like the best. Thank you Naxos for giving us this great opportunity to enjoy these works which have been ignored by the big record companies for so many years. You can go wrong with this.
