Scarlatti: Sonatas - Linda Nicholson

Editorial Reviews
Album Description

Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757)

15 Sonatas for Fortepiano

Linda Nicholson, fortepiano

Among the hundreds of sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, Linda Nicholson, one of the leading experts for historical key instruments, made her selection and recorded them on a fortepiano by Critofori. There is evidence that Scalatti owned such an instrument and composed his sonatas with it in mind. It is in any case a fascinating sound experience in an exquisite interpretation.

I dunno about the instrument--it's much more percussive than the Antunes 1767 copy in "The Portuguese Fortepiano" reviewed elsewhere on Amazon.com. But Linda Nicholson plays the heck out of her instrument. She even gives new insights on the old turkey K. 159, but the absolute killer sonata on this recording is K 249. OK, she misses the hemiola in the concluding sections, but even at 99 percent, her performance is electrifying, way beyond Ross and Hashimoto. Nichols does not do enough to exploit the loud-soft of her instrument, but she has rhythm!
