Rossini - Guglielmo Tell (William Tell) / Milnes, Pavarotti, Freni, Ghiaurov, D. Jones, E. Connell, van Allan, NPO, Chailly

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
William Tell, best known for its overture, which was used as the Lone Ranger's theme song, was Rossini's final opera, and a magnificent, four-hour singfest it is. Tell is a baritone role, handsomely sung here by Sherrill Milnes, and the heroine is Matilde, who, as performed by Mirella Freni, has every bel canto trick in her repertoire and keeps her cool even during some wickedly fast and high music. But the most challenging role--and the reason the opera is rarely performed--is for the tenor, Arnold, who must sing 2 high C-sharps, 28 high Cs, and an undisclosed number of Bs and B-flats. And the role is as long and expressive as it is high. This is, arguably, Pavarotti's greatest perfomance on discs (he once said it was his best recording) and is a must for all opera lovers to boot. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars This is a difficult opera to review........2007-02-04

"William Tell" is such a massive and uneven work that it is really hard to figure out how to review a particular recording. It probably comes down to a matter of personal taste.

I bought this recording on LPs way back when, and it thrilled me no end. It still does, and I make no apologies whatsoever. Sure, Pavarotti quickly (in my mind) wore out his welcome, but here he ardently gives his all in a role that demands both his range and his projection. Milnes was in top form here. It's such a shame that he ruined his instrument by trying to sing through physical difficulties a few years later.

I cannot believe that another reviewer questioned Freni's performance here. She is a marvel of musicianship. While she has never received the press of singers like Callas, L. Price, and Sutherland, I think she consistently shows a greater understanding of phrasing than any of these greats.

This is an expensive recording. And it is a bunch of music, much of which could be classified as somewhat ordinary. But if you want to hear some great singing, you cannot go wrong here.

4 out of 5 stars French vs. Italian ~ This beats Gardelli's French recording on EMI!.......2005-10-12

I have both this and Gardelli's recording on EMI (in French). While I do prefer the sounds in French, I definitely much prefer this recording to the EMI one. I surprisingly prefer Pavarotti to Gedda, which is strange because I'm not a Pavarotti fan at all and I am a huge Gedda fan. Pavarotti nails this role with Italian romanticism, which works here. Gedda sings beautiful, but not with the luster with which Pavarotti nails the role. I will agree with those who said this is Pavarotti's best performance on disc. It is really something. Caballe (EMI) and Freni (here) are both fantastic. The interpretations are so different, I am glad I have both. I cannot select a favorite. What sets this set apart from the EMI in French is the conducting and the orchestral playing. Chailly guides the orchestra beautiful when required and downright fierce when required. Just listen to the ballet music between Chailly and Gardelli and argue with me. Overall, this recording is much more exciting than it's EMI counterpart....but I for one am so glad I have both.

3 out of 5 stars A Lively Tell for Those Who Have Other Recordings of it:.......2002-04-25

William Tell is Rossini's last opera, and this Romantic heroic interpretation of Schiller's epic of Wilhelm Tell among his best works. Rossini composed this opera in Paris. The original libretto was written in French, for a French audience, chorus. Parisians by reputation had more refined musical technique and tastes than their Italian counterparts and Rossini applied the best of Italian opera technique, which he had mastered and more refined and complex French musical staging which he studied and adapted during his years in Paris.

One problem with this interpretation is that the text is in Italian, not in French. The crisp staccato sounds of Italian don't match the music as well as the smoother sounds of French do. The bond between language and music seems especially significant for Rossini's opera because he wrote his score to fit with words, leaving little room anywhere for improvisation by the singers or added or subtracted sounds or syllables by translators.

Riccardo Chailly's interpretation of this music is fresh and lively, if inconsistent in places. It's a pleasure to listen to this if you want a fresh take on Rossini. The star studded cast, not all in their prime, follow the conductors lead with honest, innovative performances and adept singing. If you want a stronger, perhaps more authentic grasp of the music and the story in Italian, Philips issued a recording of Riccardo Muti conducting a first rate ensemble performance in Italian at la Scala.

If don't already have Guillaume Tell in French, its original language, and want a more definitive version before trying the more experimental, please consider EMI Classics' edition conducted by Lamberto Gardelli also with a first rate ensemble cast.

4 out of 5 stars Very good set, but..........2001-04-01

The opera Guglielmo tell is absolutelly perfect! Great music! It's a strong candidate for the title of the best opera of all times. But, the great singers in the cast sound just ordinary here: Ghiaurov, Freni, and even Pavarotti. The felling i have of this set is that it could be the most brilliant of all recordings of this opera, but it's not, due to poor performances. The great Mirella freni is very poor here. Milnes is always the same...if you like him, you will enjoy him here too...

But, despite what i said, buy it with no doubt that you will hear one of the greatest operas of all times. It's fantastic overture is not, as it seemed to me, the best part of the opera. It's really difficult to find the best part of it, and that great overture really isn't the best in this cd. So, go ahead. Buy it, you will not regret ourself

5 out of 5 stars wonderful performances.......2001-01-30

This is one of those outstanding performances that "sets the standard." And,this is my favorite Rossini opera: it seems to me to combine his best features. One major disappointment was that no libretto came with the recording. Nevertheless, on its musical merit this recording gets a 5+ !

        Album Description

Rossini had already written dozens of successful operas and was wealthy by the time he decided to retire from the stage in the late 1820s. By now he was living the good life in Paris, and though the Opéra offered him a contract for five operas at unheard-of fees, he turned them down. Like many opera composers who have wished to be remembered for something more serious and substantial than their popular comedies, Rossini determined to write a grand finale to his career on a lofty subject derived from Friedrich Schiller's dramatic German version of the story Wilhelm Tell (1804). He worked long and meticulously on the opera, which had its premiere August 3, 1829 to a lukewarm Parisian reception that grew slowly more enthusiastic upon repeated hearings. Two years later, Guillaume Tell was first staged in Italy under its Italian title, and for many decades was far more often heard in Italian, with numerous cuts because of its considerable length. Not until the 196! 0s did the original full-length French version begin to be favored again, in consequence of the triumph of the Authenticism Movement in the classical music world. Many of the finest historic recordings, however, are of the streamlined Italian version, as in this exciting live performance from Naples in 1965. This is one of the rare Italian Romantic operas to have a baritone hero, and Gianciacomo Guelfi, a singer with a huge voice, is heroic in the part. Turkish soprano Leyla Gencer, often compared for dramatic power to Maria Callas, has long been a favorite of vocal collectors as she never had a major recording contract so can only be heard in live performances.

1 out of 5 stars Impossible to Listen To.......2007-02-23

Do NOT buy this recording. The recording quality of this set is so bad that I threw it away after struggling through most of one CD. GALA opera CDs are "hit or miss", and this one is the worst. It is literally the worst recorded sound I have ever heard commercially released. The whole thing sounds like someone shouting down a pipe. It's a shame because the cast has some excellent singers, but you wouldn't know it from this recording. GALA should be ashamed of themselves for even releasing it.

1 out of 5 stars Poor recording. Look elsewhere........2006-10-18

This recording sounds like someone snuck a cheap cassette recorder into the theater, took his seat in the upper balcony, and recorded the performance while hiding the recorder under his coat. The orchestra sounds like it is off in the far distance, and the voices can barely be heard.

This set was so bad that I didn't even try to resell it. I just threw it in the trash. Don't waste your money on this badly recorded set.

          1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2005-02-18

It seems that the microphone was put in front of the mouth of a person that coughs all time. The "diva" is the coughing man; the principal voices and the chorus seem to be so far, that it's very difficult yo hear the music. I rate this item with one star just because I love Rossini and I respect Muti.

5 out of 5 stars Rossini's Final Masterpiece Beautifully Sung.......2006-02-11

          Source: Viva La Voce broadcast

Cast: Giorgio Zancanaro,Cheryl Studer Chris Merrit, Giorgio Surian, Franco De Grandis, Amelia Felle, Luigi Roni. Conductor- Ricardo Muti/Orchestra del Teatro A alla Scala

This beautiful recording is out of print and hard to find. This is only the highlights from the full-length recording which is out there somewhere. Conductor Muti's project of reviving the Italian version of Rossini's final masterpiece- William Tell- was a smash hit thanks to the talents of Giorgio Zancanaro in Cheryl Studer. Chris Merritt, a tenor, must have replaced an indisposed Nicolai Gedda, who could sing the tenor part (not William Tell who is a baritone) and one wishes he had sung for this recording. Gedda mastered the role like no one else. He could famously pull out all the stops and deliver the demanding vocal fireworks for the part, which calls for a lot of high C's. Zancanaro is a strong, beautiful baritone singer and is splendid in this recording. His singing technique is grandiose to say the least, and technically not suited to Rossini, but it copes with the music quite well and is a performance that has yet to be beaten, at least in the Italian version of this opera. Cheryl Studer is such a versatile artist. She is in almost every opera I've heard! Other than singing Wagner and Italian bel canto opera, she is evidently a gifted Rossini singer. The role of Matilde calls for a soaring coloratura voice with agility and flexibility, all of which Studer has in abundance. Muti conducts with supreme artistry.
