Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Commenting on "The Devil and Daniel Webster", Douglas Moore has said, "Mr. Benet and I have classified "The Devil and Daniel Webster" as a folk opera because it is legendary in its musical expression....we have tried to make an opera in which the unit of speech, song and instrumental music, will communicate the essence of the dramatic story, enhance but not distort."
The Devil and Daniel Webster (opera in one act), Music, Douglas S. Moore, The Festival Orchestra, Doris Young, Nigel Douglas, American 20th/21st Century Opera, Opera

"Elmer Bernstein conducts film scores of Bernard Herrmann".......2004-10-28
Milan Records presents Elmer Bernstein conducting The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with this digitally remastered "Bernard Herrmann Film Scores ", from "CITIZEN KANE" [1942], "THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER" [1942], "THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH" [1956], "PSYCHO" [1959], "THE WRONG MAN" [1957], "VERTIGO" [1958], "NORTH BY NORTHWEST" [1959], "THE BRIDE WORE BLACK" [1967], "FAHRENHEIT 451" [1966], "TAXI DRIVER" [1973]...and the final track is "BERNARD HERRMANN ON FILM MUSIC" [recorded early 1970s]...which clearly states why music is an additional character to any film, without it the film would be incomplete...during the silent film era, the piano player kept the audience tuned into what was happening, whether it was a love scene or danger lurking around every corner.
Herrmann completely mesmerizes us with his themes, blending variations with eloquent and subtle cues...depicting each character in the film, and fine tuned to the story-line ~ he was a genius and knew his craft well...relies heavily on strings, usually with lyrical solos for the winds...absolute in capturing the essence of each scene, musically letting the audience in through his score ~ the result is colors come shining through with wonderful arrangements...many of the classic film scores have become cult favorites among "film-score-buffs" like me and collectors alike.
Each film score is superb and very strong...the balance of the instruments and experimental touches of Bernard Herrmann are all just brilliant ~ working with directors like Welles, Dieterle, Hitchcock, Truffaut and Scorsese all were very conscious of classic film music and and Herrmann's cues really came through...each outing was nothing less than a bravo performance...those who ignored Herrmann during his career, really missed out...cause all the diehard collectors of film music knew he was a WINNER! ~ Bernard Herrmann [1911-1975].

Classic - Hold the Chills.......2006-06-25
This is a fine collection of mostly classical themes.
Some of them have nice creepy moments, but on the whole, it's just some solid music. Not something to buy if you want really "spooky" music, but worthwhile for some interesting listening.
Packed with creepy stuff.......2000-12-16
This is an awesome album. It starts off with thunder crashing, running footsteps, a gate creaking, the wind howling, a cat screeching, a door opening, a woman crying that she needs help....and then SCREAMING! And then straight into track 2, the overture to 'The Phantom of the Opera'. Wow! The rest of the cd also features 'creepy' music from various sources, such as Alfred Hitchcock films, like Psycho, various classic works like Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Night on Bald Mountain', and also some other creepy sound effects. A good album not only for Halloween but I dare you to listen to it during a dark night with a thunderstorm raging outside.
A real work-out for your system.............1999-12-11
I've owned the "Chiller" CD since it's release in '89. At the time, I was working for a local Audio/Video/Music dealer, and was looking for 'demo' CD's containing not necessarily heavy bass, but ones displaying incredible dynamic range, and sharp transient peaks. I already owned a copy of "Time Warp", also on Telarc, and was intrigued when I read about "Chiller. Needless to say, I was extremely pleased with this disc. Not only did I get a disc containing some great treatments of classics, but the re-make of the "Psycho" suite is wonderful (the shower sequence is very faithful to the original)! A word of warning.....the dynamic range of this disc is not to be underestimated.....I drove an older amplifier into thermal shutdown VERY quickly with track #1. I haven't tried it since I've upgraded my home system....hmmm....might have to scare the neighbors tonight (or at least rattle a few dental fillings)!
Great stuff!.......1999-10-09
This CD contains tons of great classic Halloween tunes. Even though the names might sound unfamiliar, you probably know most of the music on here through cultural osmosis. Heck, it's worth it just for "Funeral March of a Marionette" (the Alfred Hitchcock show theme.)

Customer Reviews:
A trip through drama, fantasy, and obsession!.......2002-08-21
When I first saw this album being sold in England, I still had not heard the music for Obsession yet, yet I asked for it anyway, because I loved the music to All That Money Can Buy, Citizen Kane, and The Magnificent Ambersons. Even though All That Money Can wasn't an actual re-recording of the original score, but a suite, it still was the same material, and it's the only recording you'll have of Bernard Herrmann conducting his first and only Oscar winning score. Welles Raises Kane is really just a compilation of music from Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons, with a few different arrangements. It was done wonderfully and had a hilarious sounding segment on the Saturday Night Band (track 3). Obsession is not just a movie with an obsessed Cliff Robertson, but also an obsessed Bernard Herrmann. I thought that I'd never see the film, because it wasn't being sold anymore, except new; no video store had it for rent either, so I bought it used, and I don't think I was anymore less obsessed than Herrmann and Robertson. The story was beautifully written by Brian de Palma and Paul Schrader (who was also doing Taxi Driver that year, Herrmann's last film), and I could not get over Herrmann's haunting, but beautiful Academy Award nominated score. After that, I kept fight to get this wonderful cd, and as much as I love the other suites, Obsession is the one I listen to most. Very much like Vertigo, but with a stronger feel to it, and Herrmann's second film with choral voices, the Thames Choir, which was conducted by Louis Halsey. A man who he's worked with before on his opera Wuthering Heights, when Herrmann used the Elizabethan Singers for the Christmas Scene, and which Louis Halsey conducted. Wonderfully performed by the London and National Philharmonic Orchestras, this is an album that should not be ignored, it should be part with any Herrmann collection. Also, it's the only way you'll have the Obsession soundtrack. A final note added, as much as I'm glad for Jerry Goldsmith to win his Oscar for The Omen, I kind of wish that Bernard could've won the Oscar that year for Obsession, since the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences really did ignore his music throughout his life, never-the-less, it was Jerry's turn too.

Customer Reviews:
Superior American opera.......2007-01-18
I have no agenda, unlike others who have posted and have caused this wonderful recording to appear "a loser". Nothing could be further from the truth. This superior piece of Americana has been beautifully recorded with performances to match. Don't let angry and stupid reviews get in the way of your experiencing this excellent recording. I would give it 6 stars if the Amazon site let me.
It's BA-A-A-ACK ! .......2005-11-12
I hasten to declare that I have not heard this CD. My comments are directed solely at the opera, not the performance. I intend in no way to impugn the talent or dedication of those associated with this production--only their execrable taste.
In 1928, Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943) published a history--or more properly a fable--of the US Civil War in the form of a book-length piece of doggerel called "John Brown's Body." Inexplicably, the book won the Pulitzer Prize in 1929. This made Benet a very big-deal American literary voice. Not long thereafter, he published a short story, "The Devil and Daniel Webster."
In the story, an American Faust named Jabez Stone (if memory serves me correctly) sells his soul to a certain Mr. Scratch for several years of earthly prosperity. The specified time comes to an end, as it must do in all proper Faust tales, and Mr. Scratch comes to collect his new and unwilling property. Stone, as all Fausts must, attempts to wriggle away from his fully deserved fate. In Benet's version, he manages to convince Senator Daniel Webster to act as his defense attorney in a trial for his soul. The jury consists of black-hearted and bloody-handed villains, but true-blue and authentic Americans to the last man. Webster goes into full Clarence Darrow-mode (at the time, a famous defender of the damned) and--whadayaknow!--he convinces those scoundrels, renegades and traitors to let good ol' Jabez of the hook, much to the distress of the put-upon Mr. Scratch.
In the late 1930s, Benet was approached by the pre-"Ballad of Baby Doe" Douglas Moore, who begged the great man to allow him to set "The Devil and Daniel Webster" to music. Eventually, permission was graciously given, but the mighty literary eminence sternly decreed that the lofty perfection of his prose must not be sullied by the music. More, he declared that Webster's speech to the jury was entirely off-limits. It must be delivered as dialogue, not set to music at all. (Imagine Lorenzo da Ponte telling Mozart what he could or could not set! Or even fiery Gilbert daring so to defy easy-going Sullivan.)
Now, if I had been Moore, I'd have told Benet where he could stuff his precious dialogue and turned briskly away to compose an opera based on "The Gold Bug," "Casey at the Bat," or "A Visit from St Nicholas", all fine and valuable pieces of true Americana. Ah me, Moore felt otherwise. In 1939, the Moore-Benet collaboration hit the boards, but with a great, honking hole at its center, the very place where the power of music should have been the force to turn the twisted minds and hardened hearts of the abominable jurymen.
Moore was a skillful, if not supremely gifted composer. In 1939, his chosen style might be described as folksy, desiccated, sub-verismo--not great but not bad, either. The opera won some dutiful praise but it never really came to life. The wound where its heart should have been was too great.
As a work of art, this is a true nuisance, a great lost opportunity. But for the puffed-up ego of the wordsmith and the excessive deference of the composer, it might have amounted to something.
It coulda been a contender!
