The Hyperion Schubert Edition 15 / Margaret Price, Graham Johnson

Editorial Reviews

Margaret Price's silvery soprano perfectly complements this collection of songs about the night, the seasons, and various astral bodies. The vast majority of the works included here have the words "moon" or "evening" in their titles, but such is the variety and range of Schubert's inspiration that there's never a hint of monotony. Excellent notes and recorded sound complete a very attractive package for a cool autumn evening. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Nocturnal Bliss.......2004-06-03

I write this review more to express my rating than to describe what has already been accurately described by both the editorial and the previous reviewer. I cannot resist saying, however, that Dame Price voice is excuisitely beautiful and she does carress every word with magical finesse, style and (again) beauty. The programme itself is a brilliant concept and works to perfection. Graham Johnson, as with Brigitte Fassbaender's programme on another CD in the series (another great protagonist), is an attentive pianist.

A superlative reading, beautifully recorded and VERY HIGHLY recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Dame Margaret Price is breathtaking!.......2000-01-28

Margaret Price has always been lauded for her performances of Schubert Lieder, and this CD is incredible in both performance and program. Not only can we marvel at the exquisite beauty of Price's voice throughout, but we can actually feel the emotion behind all these great songs through the way she sings. But it's more than just singing. Ms. Price lives these songs...she makes them her own. After listening to just the first track, "An die untergehende Sonne", you will never be able to imagine anyone else singing it so convincingly. The program, which consists of "night songs", is remarkably varied. One would expect a program of just serenade-like songs, but what one gets here are also lively, jaunting numbers and a good amount of intense drama. And in these latter types of songs, Price excels. The intensity of her performances simply amazes. The varied and meaningful colors in her tone, the diction sung with perfect intonation and clarity, and the heart-wrenching passion of her commitment to each scenario is nothing short of stunning. This CD beautifully characterizes Dame Margaret Price's consummate artistry, and it is wholly recommended to any lover of great Lieder singing.
