Mozart: Complete Symphonies [Box set]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This was a very smart idea. The early symphonies are all performed by Neville Marriner, while the later (and better) ones are the classic performances by Joseph Krips and the incomparable Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. Some of these appeared on budget CDs briefly, but never the entire set. So although a hybrid series, this is as fine a collection of Mozart symphonies as one is likely to get. Music lovers who know about these legendary Krips recordings will snap this up without delay, but it also makes a very safe recommendation for anyone wanting the complete numbered symphonies on regular instruments. -- David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:
The best period instrument Mozart symphony cycle around.......2005-11-24
Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert turn in the best period instrument Mozart Symphony cycle around. With 20-30 players, the English Concert sounds full and rich, and are so well recorded, one could mistake them for a modern instrument chamber orchestra augmented with more players for a bigger sound. The early symphonies employ fewer players, the symphonies from about No. 20 and following call for more players, in some cases trumpets, horns and timpani in addition to the usual strings, harpsichord, flutes, oboes, and bassoon.
Pinnock chooses perfect tempos for the English Concert: allegros are spritely, but not driven and there's never a sense that the musicians are having trouble keeping up at Pinnock's tempos. Andante movements sing with the cantabile quality Mozart is famous for, and are always musical and flowing: very beautiful.
I am not a big fan of period instrument Mozart. I have heard Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music (L'Oiseau Lyre) in Mozart Symphonies 34, 38, 39, and 41 and that's enough to give me a sense that Pinnock is superior - more confident, and better recorded - to Hogwood in this music. Haydn's symphonies seem to work better with period instruments than do Mozart's, but Pinnock and the English Concert have a special musical quality which MAKE Mozart work with a period orchestra. Incidentally, both Pinnock and Hogwood have recorded very fine Haydn Symphonies with their respective orchestras.
I have also read, in AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE (July/August 2005 issue) in a review of the Mozart Symphonies with Linden/Mozart Academy of Amsterdam, a period orchestra (Brilliant Classics set) that Pinnock's Mozart cycle is to be preferred. I have not heard Linden myself, but ARG's review states that with the exception of Symphonies 20, 39, 40, and 41, Pinnock "wins across the board." The reviewer cites sour tuning, below standard pitch, sloppy playing, not enough contrasts of dynamic range and pokey allegros, as liabilites which are especially annoying in Linden's cycle, and advises the reader to go with Pinnock if looking for a period cycle of Mozart symphonies.
Other options? Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (DG); Krips/Concertgebouw (for Symphonies 21-41, Philips); Hans Graf/Mozarteum Orchestra, Salzburg (Capriccio); and Nicholas Ward/Northern Chamber Orchestra, modern instrument chamber orchestra (for early symphonies, Naxos). But unless you really hate period instruments, you will like Pinnock, as I do, and as I stated earlier: I am not a fan of period instrument Mozart.
The best period orchestra Mozart symphonies around!.......2005-08-23
Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert perform Mozart's symphonies with great style, elan, and spirit, making this the best period orchestra Mozart Symphonies around. Pinnock deals alot in contrasts and atmosphere, setting a mood for each movement, within each symphony. The English Concert plays even Mozart's earliest symphonies-written when he was a pre-teen-as great music, and it works, very effectively. Allegros bristle with spirit, Andantes and Adagios emphasize cantabile (singing style) as all Mozart's music has a vocal/singing emphasis (in contrast to Haydn or Beethoven, who tend to build movements arount motives, or rhythmic patterns of notes; Mozart emphasizes melody moreso in many of his works).
I am not a fan of period instruments in music of Haydn, Mozart, and any composers after Bach and Handel, but this cycle is really fine. My favorite Mozart Symphonies have been Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (complete cycle, DG); 21-41 by Joseph Krips/Concertgebouw Orchestra (Philips, coupled with Marriner/Academy of St. Martin in the fields for 1-20); Bruno Walter/New York Philharmonic for Symphonies 25,28,29,35,36,38-41 (Sony); Otto Klemperer/Philharmonia for Symphonies 36,38-41 (EMI). But, Pinnock's accounts are spirited and the English Concert, at about 20-25 players, doesn't sound scrawny or ineffective at all. If you're used to the sonority of the Berlin Philharmonic or Philharmonia Orchestra, this will take some getting used to, but it is very good.
This could be called "period instrument Mozart for those who don't like period instruments." I have heard Christopher Hogwood/Academy of Ancient Music in Symphonies 34,38,39,41, and they are not as good as Pinnock's accounts. Hogwood's orchestra sounds small, puny compared with Pinnock's more robust group. I am not meaning to degrade Hogwood, as I have a number of fine recordings of his: Beethoven Symphonies 1,2;
Handel's MESSIAH; Haydn Symphonies 94, 96; Boyce Opus 6 Symphonies. But in Mozart Symphonies, I prefer Pinnock.
Pinnock's set is also well recorded, adding to it's high quality. You can't go wrong with these, unless you absolutely hate period instruments.
A Beautiful Time Capsule.......2005-04-08
In comparing this recording, with its use of original instruments, and my favorite recordings with modern instruments, I find I prefer this. It doesn't lose any power, but it gains by the imaginative process of listening to the music as Mozart would have heard it. The collection is also a wonderful way to listen to the progression of Mozart's music throughout his life. As you listen to the first two of the eleven discs, you'll be amazed at the symphonies he wrote when he was only nine years old!
Another BBB (basically bland Brit) recording.......2005-04-06
This is a short review because when you've heard one of these you've heard them all. They're all played in the same starched, stiff mannor, with brisk tempi, little feeling, no shaping of phrase, and no color. The Mozart symphonies--the latter ones, anyway--have their own style and merit different approaches (No. 31, the "Paris," is almost curtain-raiser music for an opera buffa, for example, while No. 39 is in some ways proto-Beethoven, harmonically sharing a good deal with the "Eroica," and No. 40 shows Mozart heading into a realm of a basically Romantic chromaticism that would have led to much fascinating music if he'd lived longer and written more in that style). Yet here all the works are played interchangably. These are performances that could have been generated on a computer.
The sound is excellent, but that's about all there is to recommend this set. Hogwood's traversal on period instruments has more personality, believe it or not. And to really show what can be done with works like these on HIP instruments, try Franz Bruggen's remarkable recordings of the Haydn symphonies on Philips. I can't recommend this set, and I got it for considerably less than the Amazon price, too.
Pinnock excellent, DG Archiv sound variable.......2005-02-18
I greatly admire Pinnock's style, directing skill and harpsichord playing, but I don't understand the variability of sound balance achieved on his many recordings by DG. Most are recorded in Henry Wood Hall and have the same "tonmeister" and producers. For example his recording of the Bach Violin Concertos is vibrant, full bodied and has a great "presence", whereas on the other end of the spectrum, the last disc of the symphonies, 40 and 41, is really anemic, with pratically no bass. I gave them a +12db bass boost to try and compensate for the lack of bass, but there was hardly any difference in the low end response. In order to listen to this disc, and to some extent the prior two as well, I have reverted to my volume expander used with vinyl records from the 70's.
My system has very clean and deep bass response and handles Telarc organ recordings with great effect, so I do not believe it is that. And, as I stated the violin concertos have a great presence, to the point where I can visualize the bass and cello players bowing their instruments. It may be do to different microphone placement for the larger ensemble of the latter symphonies, without compensating for the different acoustic.
When it comes to Archiv's 4D recordings of the English Concert, I do not like them at all. The choir from the Mozart Coronation Mass sounds like it is being piped down from outer space, detached and way to ethereal. The Telemann suites do not fare any better, thin and anemic. Don't think the extended dynamic range and lower threshold noise level helped in any way.
I should also add that I have about every recording of Pinnock and the English Concert, really the best "Original Instruments Group" out there. In my humble opinion, Pinnock should have a "Sir" in front of his name.

Krips and the Concertgebouw Orchestra are the reason to buy this set.......2005-12-02
If you're looking at this set and wondering if you should buy it, Josef Krips and the Concertgebouw Orchestra are the reason to purchase this set. Krips conducts Symphonies 21-41, or 6 discs worth: 50% of this set of Mozart Symphonies. The Concertgebouw Orchestra plays beautifully, as you would expect, and have the perfect sense of Mozart's style, served so well and warmly by Krips' conducting. Krips' Mozart deserves to stand with the other "greats" in the Mozart later symphonies:
Bohm/Berlin (DG); Klemperer/Philharmonia (EMI); Szell/Cleveland (Sony); Bruno Walter/Columbia (CBS) or New York Philharmonic (Sony "Bruno Walter Edition"); and Beecham/Royal Philharmonic (EMI: Symphony 41; Sony UK: Symphonies 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41) and London Philharmonic (Dutton). Tempos are never rushed, but Krips is sometimes faster than Bohm or Klemperer in some Allegro movements, but never to the detriment of Mozart's music. One prime example I recall is III of Symphony 26 in E flat Major: Krips is much faster than Bohm in this short movement, but it doesn't destroy the music.
Neville Marriner leads Symphonies 1-21, plus a number of other symphonies attributed to or by Mozart, but outside the regular numbering system or Kochel numbers, etc. Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields have excellent credentials as Mozart experts, and with good reason: they have made some great Mozart recordings on EMI and Philips. Here, however, Marriner and co. sound boring and routine in some of the earlier symphonies, and the harpsichord clatters away mercilessly; perhaps better phrasing and forward motion would have corrected this impression. But Marriner IS of value here for the Symphonies like 47, 52, etc. which are rarely, if ever recorded elsewhere. If you want to hear Marriner/ASMF in the later Mozart Symphonies, go for their EMI and Seraphim recordings, regularly available through Amazon.com.
This is a valuable set, and I'm glad to have it mostly for the Krips recordings.
Very well performed.......2005-03-17
Marriner and Krips both do fantastic jobs. Some may say this set is missing some pieces, and don't get me wrong, Mozart is one of my favorite composers, but frankly, these works are probably some of his early or posthumous symphonies, which are really not needed in the first place. The ones that are there more than suffice, and they are incredible. I usually go for period instrument performances, but I really think that the Mozart Symphonies sound so much better with modern instruments, which are used here. The sound quality is very good. Very highly recommended.
Mozart Complete Symphonies - Philips.......2004-10-12
As usual, the ASMF and Marriner shine through with just the right tempo and expression. Marriner will always be my conductor of choice for Mozart's symphonies, although Jeffrey Tate with the English Chamber Orchestra does rather well too. The problem I had with this set was with the latter half (what are considered Mozart's "late" symphonies). They are disappointing under Krips' hand because Krips' interpretation of Mozart's symphonies is draggy and lack a je ne sais quois that the other Mozartean conductors of our day possess. It would have been better if Krips had done the early symphonies and Marriner, the late, because Mozart was at his peak as a composer with his late symphonies.
Where's the Rest of Him?.......2003-04-06
If a work is to be called the "complete" anything, does it not behoove the artist to tell the truth? Anyone familiar with sonata allegro form knows a symphonic exposition is presented twice before entering development in the first movement. It's basic introduction to music. So how come my very favorite, Number 39, is abbreviated to only one presentation of the exposition? For nearly $... I think I deserve more no matter how good the cd sounds. If it sounds incomplete, then it is incomplete. I bought Beethoven's complete by Solti and the Chicago Symphony and despite the fact that those expositions are by tradition offered only once, Solti's integrity called him to present all 9 as written. I'm no scholar nor am I a stickler. I just know what things should sound like and anything less is unsatifactory.
You haven't fallen in love with His symphonies, yet..........2002-03-12
Every phrase ever so beautifully formed and sounded with the help of the group that has that wonderful heavenly tone that could have been made to play Mozart - the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (really only one of the few that deserve such a title), Josef Krips, a man who had devoted his career to the study of Mozart, deliver performances that closest match the achievement of the works themselves. Perhaps not known widely Josef Krips had a uncommon gift of forming and bringing out in his sensitive and loving way (savoring of Bruno Walter) the pictorial elements in the work, and having his roots in the stage, he was especially skilled in overlapping elements in Mozart's operatic work; of drama and humane feeling, and with those of his orchestral output; of philosophical resignation and a powerful otherworldly influence along perfect grace. You will be able to tell, he was a true Mozartean - one of the very few on record. And of his examination of the composer he wrote (included in the booklet of the as excellent Don Giovanni record on Decca): "Mozart is, of all composers, the most difficult to conduct, and I can tell you why: two bars and you are suddenly transported to heaven. It's very hard to keep your bearings when you are there."

Album Description
The White Box is Naxos' flagship boxed set series, dedicated to exploring complete areas of a composer's work. All releases in the White Box series are presented in durable and attractive packaging with the discs enclosed in individual sleeves. From the beginning, Naxos has sought to let these masterpieces speak for themselves and in designing these boxes, the music is presented with minimal fuss. Such minimalism does not apply to the generously sized booklets, which offer full essays on each work plus a biography of the composer and artists. The booklets also contain a specially created chronology for this series, which sets events in the composer's own life into a wider musical and overall historical context.

A great bargain box of Mozart Symphonies.......2005-09-01
Naxos' release of the complete Symphonies of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) is a great bargain box. The recordings of the earlier symphonies, 1-24,26,37 are by the Northern Chamber Orchestra (Manchester, England) conducted by Nicholas Ward and the later symphonies: 25, 27-41, are by the Bratislava, Slovakia orchestra Capella Istropolitana, conducted by Barry Wordsworth. Ward's recordings date from the early 1990s; Wordsworth's from the late 1980s. All are digital sound, and well recorded. The Northern Chamber Orchestra has about 25 players, but doesn't sound thin or scrawny - they use modern instruments, and Naxos does a great recording job. The Cappella Istropolitana is also well recorded, and sounds larger than the Northern Chamber orchestra: perhaps about 50 players?
Wordsworth's recordings suffer more from comparison with big name conductors of the past (and not so distant past) such as Beecham, Walter, Bohm, Szell, Klemperer, Kubelik, Krips, Kertesz, and Bernstein. Competition is fierce in Mozart Symphonies 35 and after, as almost all the great conductors have recorded them, rather like the Beethoven or Brahms Symphonies. But Wordsworth's accounts are respectable, if not always the best: 35 and 39 are very good, the others quite good. My only complaint is that in some movements Wordsworth could have repeated the exposition section, as I'm all ready to hear it again (some listeners will not agree). And some Allegro movements are a little pokey. The Capella Istropolitana's strings, I think viola section, is shaky in II of Symphony 34. But I am nit-picking: these are really quite good performances, and the price is right!
My favorite Mozart Symphonies are recordings of Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (DG), Krips/Concertgebouw (Philips, Symphonies 21-41, with Marriner/St. Martins for 1-20), Bruno Walter/New York Philharmonic (25,28,29,35,36,38-41: Sony), and Szell/Cleveland (35,39,40,41), and I'm glad to hear Naxos' production, too.
Mozart's Complete Symphonies (plus a few he didn't write).......2004-05-31
This box of 11 CDs contains all the known symphonies written by Mozart, except for the only recently (1983) discovered very early symphony in A Minor, the so-called 'Odense' Symphony, and for lagniappe includes a couple that were written by others but which had for most of two centuries been thought to be by Mozart; certainly without a guidebook I would not have known which were the ringers. The performances are divided between Nicholas Ward leading the Northern Chamber Orchestra (based in Manchester) in mostly early symphonies (up to No. 26, but also including No. 37 which was actually written by Michael Haydn, Joseph Haydn's younger brother), and Barry Wordsworth leading the Capella Istropolitana (based in Bratislava, Slovakia) in the later symphonies.
Foolishly I had over many years neglected Mozart's earlier works, thinking, as many do, that they were immature and not worth bothering with. It was only when I heard a performance by the American String Quartet of some of the early quartets (including the remarkably lovely Quartet in F, K. 168) I began to rethink my position. And I must say that this curiosity has been amply repaid by this super-budget box of all Mozart's symphonies. Just listen, for instance, to the very first symphony, K. 16, and in particular the lovely Andante movement, and you'll hear 'Mozartean' turns of phrase and harmonies; I would never suggest that this is 'immature' or 'schoolboy' music even in spite of the fact that Mozart wrote it when he was only eight! The other early symphonies deserve slow scrutiny in order to discover similar felicities. The 'late' symphonies - those are generally considered to begin with the marvelous No. 29 in A, K. 201 - are given absolutely competitive performances by Wordsworth and his Slovakian musicians. I particularly liked their fleet but solid performances of that miraculous set of three, Nos. 39, 40 and 41, which ended Mozart's symphonic career in a final burst of compositional genius. My own favorite of all the Mozart symphonies is No. 35, the 'Haffner,' K. 385, and it is given as good a performance as I've ever heard of it.
I have owned other recordings by both these orchestras and conductors and thought I knew what to expect. I was, however, notably surprised by how specially alert and alive these recordings are. They are crisply and sweetly played with a verve that sounds for all the world like they are live performances. Indeed, I learned that although they are not recordings of concert performances, they were recorded in several bursts of intense work by both orchestras and conductors and one can hear the slight edginess of that sort of situation, not in the sense of edgy tone, but in the sense of the players sitting on the edges of their chairs with all their senses engaged. In a word, these performances are superb, and now that I've made their acquaintance I can assert that many Mozart lovers would pay full price for them. Fortunately they don't have to.
The set comes in a sturdy white cardboard box with the eleven CDs in individual paper sleeves. The booklet (in English only) contains Keith Anderson's knowledgeable but rather brief notes on each symphony.
One further word: these are modern instrument performances. I am one of that frankly antediluvian sort who prefers classical and galant repertoire be played on modern instruments but with a certain amount of authentic performance practice; that's what we have here and I say 'Hurrah for that!' When you take into consideration the really quite remarkable price being asked for this set, I can't imagine why anyone would balk.
