Shostakovich is mostly known for his serious works, his symphonies and string quartets, however he wrote a large number of film, incidental, and ballet music. This CD compiles many of his waltzes and some other pieces from these. While this is mainly what could be considered "light" music, many of the pieces have wonderful melodies and coloful orchestrations.

Some of my favorite waltzes include the one from Return of Maxim, the one from Golden Hills, and the one from The First Echelon (aka Waltz #2 from the 2nd Jazz Suite). Beyond the waltzes there are some other pieces, including the famous Polka from The Age of Gold and Folk Festival (Spanish Dance) from The Gadfly.

The only caveat is that some of the pieces don't reference their original source (rather they are listed as being from various ballet suites, when they in fact come from The Limpid Stream and other sources), but this is a very minor complaint. The performance and sound is wonderful, and unless you are one who can't stand this sort of compilation, it gets my highest recommendation.

After years of my hearing and not thinking very much of Shastakovich's symphonies, this Delos delight came as a total surprise. Containing just under an hour of mostly waltzes mixed with some polkas, a galop, and even setting of "Tahiti Trot" (inspired by "Tea for Two" of all things), this concert gives us a rare chance to hear a good deal of music this composer wrote for films seldom if ever seen outside of Russia as well as some more familiar stuff from his ballets. Not one really great piece, nor not really boring one. Just a boxful of what Thomas Beecham used to call "Bonbons" from a very unexpected source. Lots of fun from Delos.

I have always been a lover of classical music, but had never been truly introduced to the waltz until my wonderful father sent me this CD. After one time through it...I was in love. The romance...the feeling...the images of days gone by. Ladies in long, flowing gowns, men in black tails and white gloves...swirling around a ballroom floor. It's all right there for you to hear. Just lovely. My personal favorite is Song of Vilja, composed by Lehar. I think this to be the most beautiful piece of music ever written. This collection is a must for any lover of the classics....but for waltz enthusiasts, it is Heaven !

I am a great fan of Andre Rieu and his Orchestra and this in possibly their best. I changd the CD's in the changer in my vehicle about once a week but this one usuallly occupies the honored number one spot for months at a time.

A wonderful find for any lover of Viennese music, particularly of the "Silver Era" of operetta. Great renditions of operetta fare by Strauss, Lehar, Kalman, Stolz and Benatzky. Also charming Viennese songs, such as "Die Engeln Kommen auf Urlaub Nach Wien," "Meine Mutterl war eine Weanerin," and other "heuriger" wine garden favorites. The whole thing is a delight!

5 out of 5 stars Warm and welcoming Shostakovich and Schoenberg.......2007-02-07

If you are not that familiar with the music of Shostakovich and Schoenberg -- as I was prior to this CD -- this is an excellent and friendly introduction. Both the Schoenberg and Shostakovich selections are among the composers' most accessible works.

Moreover, the Nash Ensemble has to be one of the finest chamber ensembles around. They play with exquisite command and finesse. And the Virgin engineers do a fine job of capturing their sound in a warm, ambient acoustic.

My first introduction to the Shostakovich Piano Quintet and Piano Trio was through a recording by the Borodin ensemble. Although their playing is beautiful and brought the music home to me, this recording by the Nash Ensemble is superior in part because the recorded sound is better and because the musicians seem to play with more vigor and commitment. The waltzes and the Piano trio round out the first disc with delightful and immediately appealing music.

The Schoenberg works are utterly remarkable. If you avoided Schoenberg because you were put off by his serial tonality, you don't need to avoid this CD. These works will convince you that Schoenberg was rooted in a romantic tradition prior to embarking on his serial tonal journey. The surprise jewel on this second disc was the Ode to Napoleon recited by Thomas Allen -- one can imagine it as a classical forerunner to rap music. I was particularly taken by how Schoenberg's harmonies could reach such moving climaxes in each of the works on this CD.

If you want to expose yourself to these composers to help develop an appreciation for their work, this is an excellent CD to obtain. I recommend it highly.

This song collection, focusing on Shostakovich's preference

for satirical texts, appears on disc with the composer's Suite

It can't escape notice that the second song in this stunning collection of Shostakovich's satirical songs is called "The Cockroach." It seems like a peculiarly Russian title, redolent of Gogol, poisonous irony, earthy realism, and disgust. Shostakovich's satire always carries an uncomfortable edge because it suggests as much self-hatred as contempt for his intended victims--all of them totally unknown and uninteresting to us, except in the generalized way that we are happy to despise Stalinism and Soviet pomposity.

Just when I thought I'd had enough of Shostakovich's dark humor, along comes Sergei Leiferkus, an absolutely riveting singer, surely the best of the post-Soviet crop. His timbre is a little gargly and wobbly, but his artistry is totally convincing. To support him Thomas Sanderling condcuts dramatically, and the Russian Phil. (a group I've never heard of) plays exuberantly; they are caught in excellent sonics by DG.

I dare say that every item here will be new to Western listeners, even those who already follow Shostakovich closely. There's a wide range of melody and orchestral color, which keeps interest high. Still, fifteen songs is a lot to take in at one go; the suite of eight waltzes from various Shostakovich film scores is altogether lighter fare, and several turn out to be quite delightful in their slick, circus-brass band way. In sum, one of the best tributes to the composer in his centennial year.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent performance of Waltzes.......2000-12-23

      In this CD performed by André Rieu, waltz music takes a very different path in sound and style. It is not as all the other walzes by Strauss that we have listened before, since it has the very special Rieu's magical touch. Even when the titles of the songs are in spanish, anyone can identify the waltzes with just the listening of the first bars. It is all wonderful. In these performances of Strauss Waltzes, the piano is arrenged, included and heard in those waltzes where it was usually absent. In the song "Strauss y Compañia", the music of Strauss is very well mixed with that of other composers; it is like a popurri of Strauss Waltzes very well mixed and played. Also, "Golondrinas de Austria", is an excellent example of the beautiful melody of the Strauss, not written by Johann but written by his brother Joseph, it is not less than any of Johann's music. All in all, this CD contains some of the best waltz music that one can listen to with the different and fabulous sound that André Rieu has to offer us.

          I bought this from my CD club as a freebie during a promotion. I was very impressed by Pahud in his recording of the Khachaturian and Ibert concertos and wanted to hear something else by him.

          This is like a lot of collections by big name soloists. It includes a lot of unrelated music done up for virtuoso effect. Some of it is not particularly French, either, including the leadoff piece, a waltz by Shostakovich.

          But everything is interesting and, to me, sometimes a bit bizarre. It was difficult for me to listen to an hour's worth of unrelated music for flute, piano, clarinet and other instrumental collections. The piercing tones of the flute, which were sometimes recorded very closely, were bothersome.

          Still the playing is excellent throughout this disk. If you have an interest in the performers, or if you like French music and/or the flute, you will probably enjoy this very much. It is similar to many such collections by James Galway (no Irish or popular music, however.)

          If you are like me, and your interest centers around European orchestral music, you may have some difficulty finding a niche for this in your collection. The recording is universally outstanding and audiophiles will enjoy that.
