Lots of Szell Brings A Re-evaluation.......2005-09-21

Kudos to Decca for bringing together in one convenient set George Szell's recordings that were made for the Decca & Philips labels from the early 1950s and to mid 1960s (minus those recordings where he acted in the role of accompanist, ie: those with pianist Curzon). These recordings are very well known and have been collector's items for many years, so to have them together in a mid-price box is self recommending.

The Philips recordings were issued a few years ago as a 2-CD set in their "Early Years" series while a few of the Decca recordings have already been released as singles in their Classic Sound series (both series saw very spotty distribution Stateside). I detect very little change in the sound quality in these new Decca Classic Sound versions, though the couplings from CD to CD are better programmed here than they were before (Philips had to cram alot of music on those 2CDs).

The most-recommendable recordings in the bunch are Szell's Mozart 34, Dvorak 8, Beethoven Egmont, Mendelssohn Midsummer's Night and Brahms 3. Here, the usual Szell trademarks are fully on display: tight rhythms, crisp articulation and finely graded dynamics. However, I was unexpectedly disappointed in two recordings long held to be top Szell & basic repertoire recommendations: the Beethoven 5 and Sibelius 2.

The Beethoven 5 has always been touted as more relaxed and in better sound than Szell's CBS 5th with Cleveland. But comparing this new Decca re-issue to Sony's recent "Original Jacket" issue of the Cleveland 5th, I didn't find that to be true at all. The Sony version now stands - to me, at least - as the better representation of Szell in this warhorse, both as an interpretation and in recorded sound. Indeed, the Concertgebouw recording suffers from an extremely lackluster and sloppy second movement that probably could have used a retake. Something just isn't right here - conductor and orchestra are not on the same page of the playbook...which is not what one expects in a recording by such a strong-willed technician as Szell. As an overall performance, this Concertgebouw recording is now easily surpassed by Szell's Sony effort, not to mention alternate versions by Kleiber, Karajan, Bernstein and others (but, again, you need to hear the Szell/Sony in the Original Jackets remastering, not the earlier Essential Classics version).

As for the Sibelius 2, we have a situation where poor intonation and hesitant execution in the orchestra knock this version off the pedestal of received opinion. And, with Szell's live Tokyo performance with Cleveland now widely available, his Concertgebouw version comes in direct competition with - Szell himself, and in a much better and much more cohesive recording. With the "if only he had recorded this with Cleveland" caveat removed, the choice is now clear - get the Cleveland version if you want Szell in Sibelius 2. That recording remains a top recommendation, though Ormandy, Maazel, Vanska and even Karajan have all brought their particular strengths to this piece as well, strengths that are much different than Szell's forte(s). There's plenty of room at the top when it comes to great recordings of great music.

Having lived with both the Beethoven and Sibelius for years, it's a bit disconcerting to have to make the above observations, but there you have it.

For the rest of the set, it is good to have Szell's interpretations of Tchaikovsky and Schubert on hand in such good sound. But truth be told, there are better versions out there of these works as well, the Tchaik 4 in particular (which in Szell's hands hangs fire in the least-expected places). The Baroque recordings included here are testament to a long-gone era when the standard Baroque works (worques?) were made acceptable to orchestral audiences by beefing them up to quasi-Wagnerian proportions. And even here, Szell is bettered by his contemporaries like Adrian Boult and Karl Richter in similar repertoire. A Baroque curate's egg if there ever was one.

Having said all of the above, I can still safely recommend this set to just about anyone interested in Szell or the repertoire on offer. Yes - work to work, there are better versions available, some from Szell himself. But *overall,* this set will provide plenty of pleasure and musical excitement to everyone save the anti-Szell wing of the classical music zealotry.

George Szell is best known from his Columbia recordings.......2005-08-31

George Szell (1897-1970) is best known from his recordings made in the 1950s and 60s for Columbia records, mostly with the Cleveland Orchestra, many of which are now on Sony Classical. But he also made a number of recordings during the same period for Decca and Philips in Europe, with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam; Vienna Philharmonic, and London Symphony, all of which are included in this box. If you think of Szell as a cold, calculating technician - and he could be in some of his Columbia recordings - he has precision here in spades, but also warm sound, perhaps partly from the remastering for this release.

Szell's Concertgebouw Beethoven Symphony 5 is MUCH BETTER than his Cleveland recording. The precision is there, but it also sings, and is warmer than the Cleveland recording (Sony, coupled with Symphony 2). Szell's Vienna EGMONT is one of the best recordings of the work, if not THE best recording of the stereo age, even 36 years after it was recorded. The Sibelius 2 (also with the Concertgebouw) is warm and fine in every way. The Concertgebouw played beautifully for him, and it shows.

The Mendelssohn MIDSUMMER NIGHT's DREAM, Schubert ROSAMUNDE, Mozart Symphony 34, Handel WATER MUSIC and ROYAL FIREWORKS MUSIC are all excellent, too. Some may have favorite performances, but I cannot imagine anything better than Szell's Concertgebouw Mozart 34: perhaps Bohm (DG) and Krips (Philips).
The 5th disc has two classic mono recordings of the early 1950s:
Dvorak's Symphony 8, and Brahms 3, both with the Concertgebouw. The sound is just fine: beautifully remastered, and Szell's performances very solid and musical.

As you can tell, I'm very happy with this, and would advise anyone with $30.00 spare change to pick it up at their first opportunity.

I can assure that one of the reason I love music is due to these recordings of Mr. Stokowsky. My father had the record of Scherezade and, though my father was an ignorant about cultivated music, he knew very well what to appreciate. We never argued when I played Beethoven's first symphony so loud, however, he always did when I played Rolling Stones so loud. I adore that he taught me to appreciate Rimsky-korsakov's music as well as Tchaikovsky's Capriccio Spagnolo so young. He was wise, on his way. I can't help to cry for him, listening to Borodin's Palatsovian dances, because, it is great music, and, having into account that I used to love it by Mr. Stokowsky's work, it doubles my crying and my remembrance. He loved the record so much. I love you, daddy.

When Stokowski began to make Phase 4 recordings for Decca in 1964, he was already 82, but he hadn't lost his energy or his tendency to shape music in outlandish ways. I mostly love him, but this box set duplicates recordings that can be found on the Cala label, which has been releasing everything Stokowski in the world, and on Decca single CDs if you go to the used market.

I mention this because the whole box set, Vol. 2 in the Original Masters series, continas some forgettable performances, in particular the rhythmically slack Beethoven Sym. 5 and 7, the over-highlighted Schubert 'Unfinished,' and a live Brahms First that seems manic and forced too much of the time. However, if you think of Stokowski having little to offer in the German classics, here is an exceptional Beethoven Ninth, one of the best things from his late career and wonderful in every way.

Decca knows that the crowd-pleasers are the gaudy, multi-miked Phase 4 versions of Scheherazade, as bombastic as you could imagine, and lots of Russian fare, including Stoki's signature synthesis from Boris Godunov. The 1812 Over., by the way, isn't over the top and yet needed to be. Finally, this German-Russian collection contains a thrilling disc of Wagner excerpts, much of it grossly over-miked, but at its core containing very impressive, vital interpretations.

In all, I'd select the Wagner, the Beethoven Ninth, and the legendary Scheherazade as the best things here. Buy them separately or take the plunge for this whole box, your choice.

More Sensational Stokowski.......2005-06-08

It took me a while to purchase this six-disc set in UNI's "Original Masters" series, but I finally did this past weekend. Classical music fans seem to either love or hate Leopold Stokowski (I, of course, love him), and unfortunately much of "Decca Recordings 1964-75, Volume 2" will be old news to serious devotees of the conductor. While I'm not familiar with the complete Decca back-catalog, at least three full discs worth of material have been previously available in the old "Weekend Classics" series -- Beethoven's 5th & 7th, Beethoven's 9th, and the Wagner selections. (I'm pretty sure the Rimsky-Korsakov material on disc five, and the Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky pieces on disc six have been issued prior too.) This is good news for those who came to collecting classical CDs late (like me) because while the Wagner is still available individually, the Beethovens have been fetching absurd prices in the Amazon Marketplace. The only material receiving its first international release is contained on disc 3 -- a Schubert "Unfinished" with the London Philharmonic from 1969 and a rousing live performance of the Brahms 1st with the London Symphony on the occasion of the conductor's 60th anniversary leading that body. The original instruments crowd will surely turn up their noses at these legendary performances, but me, I'll just sit back and listen to some more sensational sounding Stokowski.

A Greta Brahms 4th.......2007-05-25

The reviewer below has summed up the greatness of this recording rather well, but it bears restatement.
Reiner was retiring as music director of the Chicago Symphony after recovering from a massive heart attack, when he went to London to make this recording for Reader's Digest. He was supposed to have also recorded the Tchaikovsky 5th but ill health again intervened. We should count our blessings we have this.
Charles Gerhardt, the producer had worked with Toscanini and was one of the most celebrated men in his field. He would later himself conduct the Classic Film Score Series for RCA, which resuscitated the reputations of Korngold, Rosza, and Herrmann among others and led the way for film music entering the accepted concert repertoire.
Kenneth Wilkinson "Wilkie" was the engineer for the series, coming from Decca. If he ever made a technically so-so recording I've never heard of it. His work always came alive when played back.
The Barbirolli Sibelius 2nd was in the Reader's Digest anthology which I once owned, and so were discs by Kempe, Fistoulari, Dorati, Pretre, Munch, Krips, Rene Leibowitz, Malcolm Sargent, Adrian Boult, the great Jascha Horenstein, Oscar Danon and a few others I'll probably remember later. It was a very special set.
This disc and the Barbirolli came in for the most critical acclaim. Reiner claimed this symphony was his favorite musical 'calling card', and it sounds it here. Illness or the post-Beecham RPO seemd to humanize him. There was the precision you expected from Reiner, and also notable warmth that was occasionally lacking back in Chicago.
Interestingly, while the reputations of Karajan, Solti, and even Szell (great martinets of the baton) have faded with time, Reiner remains one of the most celebrated conductors of the Twentieth Century in every accounting.
Though the gold Chesky disc is not greatly different from the silver. I don't miss the Leibowitz Egmont overture tacked on to the later, good though it is. It's just great to have this wonderful account of Brahms 4th period.
Now that Chesky has let these recordings out of print, I hope someone will make the Reader's Digest recordings Gerhardt and Wilkinson made so special available again.
(It would be nice if they threw in the Leibowitz rendtion of Pictures at an Exhibition as well. It's been as scarce as Liberal Republicans since it was made, and this unique rendition is rather fun to hear. )

Have the LP of this, but..........2003-12-27

I agree with the previous four reviewers on the performance. I have collected every Brahms Fourth on LP that I could get my hands on and this one is by far the most wonderful.

Unfortunately, the sound of the LP is not good. It sounds very similar to a digital recording with the attendant harshness and grainy sound. I have been desperately been searching for the original RCA Gold Label pressing of this performance in order to compare.

I'm sure if you just listen to CDs you could appreciate the sound, but for the higher resolution you can get from high-end vinyl playback, this pressing is not up to "audiophile" standards in my opinion.

Admirable combination of beauty and power.......2003-09-06

Fritz Reiner once said this was about the best recording he ever made. One can hear why. This is a sturdy, no nonsense account of the Brahms Fourth, but it does not lack a certain attractive quality, especially in the second movement andante, one of the composer's most inspired creations. For one who is identified sometimes with a cool approach, Reiner shows, in this movement, a lovely sense of warmth. In the first movement, he proceeds more rapidly than Bruno Walter, thereby adhering more honestly to the composer's allegro non troppo indication. I'm not really criticizing Walter, since I see his approach as helping to sustain a rather autumnal presence. Reiner's firmer view projects strength, but it also conveys musicality. This sense of integrity is evident also in his presentation of the third and fourth movements where, occasionally, some other conductors are inclined to go "over the edge" by displaying excessive boisterousness or pushing things too far. Not Reiner. He maintains a splendid balance throughout, while providing both the requisite liveliness and feeling of forward momentum. There's virtually nothing to fault in this recording, which also demonstrates a pleasing ambience. This disc joins the list of my favorite Brahms Fourths which includes Walter, Klemperer, Weingartner and Abendroth.

Surprisingly warm Reiner performance!.......2001-07-31

Fritz Reiner, that tyrant of the conducting world, is usually known for his straight, business like manner of conducting. So here is a Brahms filled with warmth and emotion. What makes this performance so thrilling is that Reiner did not impose his Chicago Symphony sound on the Royal Philharmonic. The Royal Phil sounds warm and spacious. Chesky's remastering is outstanding. It sounds better than all of the modern digital recordings. This recording has a warmth and spaciousness not found in todays recordings. Reiner's brass is so strong and present. It's almost as if the engineers has placed microphones under the bells of the trombones! This recording was made in 1961, and shortly after this recording, Reiner suffered a heart attack and would pass in 1963. This recording serves as a great testimony to what great conductor Reiner was. Essential!!

Brahms not loved to death, but.......2001-04-13

played like you've never heard it before!

It sounds like a really young person on the podium, what with all the fire that the Royal Phil gives. But it's not all cinder and ashes: there are some surpassingly beautiful moments.

The tempi are quicker than in a lot of recordings--or at least they sound that way. If memory serves, Andre Previn's outing on Telarc with the same orchestra is a bit slower (and also a beautiful performance worthy of collection) and relaxed, as was Barbirolli in Vienna. In some ways, the performance recalls Mackerras's pioneering set on Telarc, tempo-wise.

I have Kleiber in this work too, with Vienna (although that's on Exclusive instead of the more common DG), and he is also fabulous. But my favorite is this recording. At least as of today!

The taughtness is energizing, and I find the observation of the Amazon reviewer to be quite true: The orchestra does indeed play like their lives counted on it. In fact, it sounds like they were terrified! This comes through in some of the string playing, which is beautiful, but sometimes lacking a little finesse in ensemble (yes, I know, this is Reiner conducting--imprecision is usually not the term one connotates with him!).
