Nobody conducted Leonard Bernstein's compositions better than Lenny himself. On this double-CD, we can hear the conductor-composer at the podium on four of his most spiritual works. Symphony No. 1 (Jeremiah) was written when Bernstein was just 24 years old, but it's a work rich with emotion and turmoil, especially in the gripping third movement, in which mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel adds some much-needed weight to the Copland-esque instrumental passages. Symphony No. 3 (Kaddish) was written 20 years after Jeremiah, and it shows: here, Bernstein goes out on a musical limb with a rich symphonic and choral lamentation to JFK. The Israel Philharmonic and soprano Montserrat Caballé give electrifying performances on this gripping work, which is indebted to Bernstein's Jewish roots; only speaker Michael Wager sounds unconvincing and slightly wooden. But the real gems are on disc two, with the gorgeous ballet Dybuk and the choral work Chichester Psalms, where Bernstein's vision of religious text, chorus, and orchestra (in this case, the Vienna Philharmonic) all come together for one magical moment.     The entire set is a great Bernstein expereince but the 3rd Symphony (Kaddish)dedicated to the recently assassinated JFK strikes not only an emotional cord but inspires contemplation. What would I say if I were to do my own Kaddish? Would I be upset with God? Would I dare ask God what happened to His faith in our covenant? I do not know. But this music certainly starts you thinking about it.

                  Rita and Rami Kleinstein are husband and wife who on occaision sing together. Primarily however each has their own career. Rami is an American - born composer as well as performer. His music has a lightness and rhythm which is captivating, and upbeat. Rita is in Israeli terms a superstar whose voice has a rare emotive power. Of Persian background she has a kind of edgy, Middle Eastern nervousness, a tension which powers her voice. But it also has a piercing upper- range beauty, and there is a kind of excitement in the way she sings. Her love - ballads are striking and deep.
                  Together they complement each other and have a delightfully warm and often playful sound.
