The Butterfly Lovers Concerto
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, scored for solo violin and Western orchestra, is one of the best known of all contemporary Chinese compositions. It has become indelibly linked with Takako Nishizaki, whose seventh recording of this hugely popular work features on this disc. Songs and Dances from the Silk Road, by the Slovak-born Peter Breiner, is based on traditional melodies to be heard in the West of China, from where the famous Silk Road takes its course through Central Asia to the Occident. Takako Nishizaki is one of the world's most recorded and appreciated violinists, especially beloved in China and other parts of Southeast Asia through her many popular recordings and personal appearances in concerts and in the media. She also lies at the very heart of Naxos' rich recorded offering of music for the violin.
The Butterfly Lovers Concerto, Music, Peter Breiner, Zhan-hao / Chen, Gang He, James Judd, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Takako Nishizaki, Chamber Music & Recitals, Classical, Classical Artists, Concerto, Orchestral & Symphonic, Violin Concerto

NOT the best Chinese music there is.......2004-04-24
'The Butterfly Lovers' violin concerto is NOT the best that Chinese music has to offer, despite being one of the most well-known works in the Chinese repertoire. This goes for any interpretation of this work by any conductor and orchestra, not just this one. The first and the last ten-minute sections of the music (the entire concerto is nearly thirty minutes long) are admittedly just exquisite, but the middle portion, which is supposed to depict the struggles of the heroine against her adversaries, is utterly ruined by the use of the wood clapper, an extremely crude Chinese instrument which should never have been admitted into the otherwise beautiful work. It's as if a large carbuncle were painted onto the nose of the Mona Lisa. The composers He Zhanhao and Chen Gang really should have known better. Much of Chinese music is actually genuinely beautiful, but there are also 'earsores' aplenty -- some of which have been unhappily incorporated into the concerto.
I wish to comment a little incidentally on the uncharitable characterization of Chinese music provided by one of the reviewers below, darragh o'donoghue, to the effect that native Chinese music sounds like 'a lunatic charging through a kitchen'. I really don't think such a comment is fair to Chinese music at all -- there is a great deal of authentic Chinese music that is quite as beautiful as anything by, say, Ralph Vaughan Williams. To make sweeping claims on the music of a cultural tradition on the basis of what one finds in a few films would be about as objective as, say, saying of Western music that it sounds like the screams of barbarians solely on the basis of listening to Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps. Or rap or heavy metal.
A comptent attempt, nothing more........2003-10-04
When the "Butterfly Lover Concerto" was first conceived, it was intended to distill the best of Western classical and traditional Chinese folk music into an well-paced and passionate narrative drama. To bring out its full color and texture, Chinese folk musical instruments were brought in. The concerto divides into "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai studying together", "saying goodbye", "Zhu resisting the arranged marriage"), "Liang and Zhu meeting again in Zhu's house, and finaly "Lovers transforming into butterflies". The violinist here is the voice of the young lovers. In neither the Naxos or Marco Polo version could Ms. Nishizaki convey much emotion through her interpretation. Too many details, when emphasized and refined, would have significantly elevated the interpretation, were sadly neglected. The Bratislava Orchestra in the Marco Polo CD did not provide enough support, sounding perfunctory and all too timid. In contrast, the Shanghai orchestra in the Naxos CD did a much better job in maintaining the dialogue with the soloist. As for other pieces played by Nishisaki, I feel that she was competent, but lacked character.
To this date, Ms. Yu Li Na, the first person ever to play the Butterfly concerto, remains its best interpreter. Technically superb, she never let it overshadow the most important elements in the concerto: love, loss, and devotion. And she made it sound SO easy. Her attention to the details was exquisite and gratifying: I feel like I can hear the lovers murmur, the wills clash and butterflies fluttering in the storm. It takes a lot of guts to display such vulnerability and intimacy in her interpretation.
In a recording from the late 50s (which I think is available on cassettes), Ms. Yu also recorded the pieces which Ms. Nishizaki played in the Naxos and Marco Polo CDs. She brought much more vitality and intimacy to her music. You don't just hear the music, you see vivid images and hear laughters and shouts of joy.
I do not usually write such long reviews. But the "Butterfly Lover Concerto" is very close to my heart. Tapes of her music are usually available in Chinese bookstore. I sincerely hope whoever is interested in modern Chinese music also takes the time to discover Ms. Yu.
Best Chinese music of all.......2003-02-03
This is the best Chinese music of all. Also the performer Takako Nishizaki is the top violin performer in Japan. She is also the best of all performers for "Butterfly Lovers". Highly recommended. If you have any thing connected to China or Chinese culture, this is one you must have and love.
Music to swoon dreamily to........2002-04-25
'The Butterfly Lovers' may be the most famous work in the Chinese classical canon, and its narrative may be derived from Chinese folklore, but there is very little Chinese about it. A conventional violin concerto from the softer Romantic spectrum (cf Bruch, Elgar), its broad melodies, spaces for virtuosic solo playing and orchestral development are overlaid with Chinese folk colour, in the same way a Hollywood film set in China might do. It is no more authentically Chinese than Massenet's 'Le Cid' is Spanish, or 'Madama Butterfly' is Japanese.
For the listener, this is a relief. Anyone who has seen 'Farewell My Concubine' will know that native Chinese music, to the uninitiated Western ear, sounds like a lunatic running amok in a kitchen, all clanging percussion and wailing stutters. 'Lovers' tells its love story in unabashed Western romantic colours that paint pictures and stir emotions - even its rhythmic passages are reassuringly familiar.
The other pieces on the CD follow the same pattern, all soupy, dreamy melancholy, all wonderfully touching, strongly evoking natural or communal worlds. Nishizaki is considered the leading interpreter of this music, but it is surely not because she is Asian, but because of her experience in the Romantic violin repertoire, from Beethoven to Brahms to Berg. What IS authentic about this recording is that she is accompanied by the orchestra and conduuctor who gave the piece's premiere in 1959.
Beautiful and what a bargain.......2001-06-11
It's based on a Chinese Romeo and Juliette story and musically is a blend of East and West. I have purchased probably a half a dozen of this CD and given them as gifts--my favorite is as a wedding gift. I have never done this with any other musical piece.

Customer Reviews:
An exceptional British Violinist !.......2007-03-09
This is my first CD by the British viloinist Vanessa-Mae and I found it to be outstanding. All three pieces were exceptional and I never tire of hearing them again. For the third track if you close your eyes you're at the 1997 Hong Kong celebration of it's return to China.
As I listened to the Violin Fantasy I was thinking of Arikawa Shizuka's 2006 Olympic gold medal winning figure skating performance - especially her Ina Bauer movements. I have heard various pieces from Happy Valley in other settings but the combination of them all was outstanding. I have heard segments of Butterfly Lovers but this is the first time I've heard it in it's entirety and magnificent it is.
I would also call people's attention to the written forward of the liner. It tells you a great deal about the determination and perseverance of Vanessa-Mae in the face of hostility if not down right racism. To face this as a young child starting out on her career could have been crushing and a tremendous loss to Great Britain and the music world as a whole. The person she encountered at the age of 12 seems typical of the British residing near a park in Shanghai that was supposedly marked no dogs or Chinese allowed. I am glad that she did not allow this encounter to deter her from realizing her dreams and bringing her outstanding performance to us.
I took this CD to work and play it on my computer as background music in my office. It is soothing and relaxing and I look forward to hearing it each day. I'll have to get another copy of the CD so I can play it at home on the days I'm not in the office.
This was a great introduction for me and I hope others will enjoy it as much as I do. It is going to be a popular holiday gift this year to friends and family who are classical music enthusiasts.
From Child Prodigy to Beautiful Swan .......2006-07-01
Simply put, Vanessa Mae is one great talent. She does not receive the attention she deserves because her music falls into the classical genre. Nonetheless, as an Ozzy, Queen, Zep, Doors, and Stones fan, I have to say that this young lady rocks solidly on the electric violin. Give her a listen now!
"Butterfly Lovers" not good as expected.......2005-05-07
I have heard of four versions of "Butterfly Lovers" violin concerto by Li-Na Yu with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Takako Nishizaki With New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Siqing Lu and at last this title performed by Vanessa-Mae. To my disappointment, Vanessa-Mae's performance is neither loyal to original folklore nor deeply constructed. Li-Na Yu's recording still deserves the authoritive status. Takako Nishizaki probably can take second place.
However, other works in this albums are better.
Classically simple and intimate.......2004-06-19
As you've read from the other reviews, there are only three compositions on this album. The quality, spiritedness, and passion in each of these pieces leaves the listener wanting more.
I loved the initial novelty of Vanessa-Mae when she first came out; she provided a sultriness and edge to The Violin Player through her own compositions and renditions of traditional classics. Sometimes, that novelty can wear off... for example, with Bond.
What I love about this album, and her previous Classical Album Part 1, is that Vanessa-Mae gets back to the basics and really shows us that she is indeed a classically trained artist at heart. She is able to take these traditional pieces and (to borrow a phrase from American Idol) truly make them her own. She is not just some manufactured phenomenon.
The inlay of the CD is are essays from Vanessa-Mae that explain to the reader her intent for doing this album: to get in touch or pay hommage to her self-admittedly neglected Chinese roots. The sincerity in the writing is very refreshing and honest.
I love all of the 3 pieces: Butterfly Lovers, Turandot, and Happy Valley. Each are different styles which VM pulls off extremely well. Both Butterfly Lovers and Turandot sing with emotion and intensity. Happy Valley builds an image of joy and excitedness that surrounded the HK-China Reunification. In each song, you are truly able to sense and feel VM's passion and emotion that just sings from her violin. I have heard a different version of Butterfly Lovers, and this one is definitely better. It has VM's unique touch to it.
Truly a worthwhile purchase, and finest album from VM to date. I give it 4-stars because I wish she included more content!
Listen to the harmony of the violin and Chinese exotic music.......2002-05-24
This CD consists of three Chinese related works.Vanessa Mae, a young Chinese violinist did a great job on the CD.
1.Butterfly Lovers is based on Chinese folklore. This work has unique and exotic melody which recall China. Vanessa Mae plays delicately and sweetly and expresses the feeling of young couple of this story very well.
2.Violine fantasy on Puccini's Turandot is based of Puccini's Original Trandot and composed for violin. This work is well condensed of famous parts of Opera version. Vanessa Mae plays not only artistically, like other classical music, but also exotically, like chinese music. "Turandot as a violin music" is also interesting.
3.Happy Valley is the composition for re-unified hong Kong with China. This music is played by orchestra, violin and chorus. Compared with other two, this one places a emphasis on joyful aspects rather than artistic aspects. We can imagine the situation that not only musicians, but also listeners enjoy this music and celebrate the re-unification.
As a whole, the works of this CD give a impressive for the Chinese unique and exotic melody. Vanessa Mae plays the merody, expressing Chineseness and artistic aspects. Needless to say, this is one of the best her works. You must listen to it.

Greatest Collection of Classical I have........2006-12-14
I don't care much for compilation CDs. Usually they are someone else's favorite set of songs from that genre or composer. I usually like the songs, but when I get into listening to the other songs in the genre or by the same composer I find songs that I'm more fond of.
This collection is different.
I try not to be too generous with my top ratings in iTunes for songs, I don't give out a four or five stars to just anything, but many of the songs from this collection make up a good chunk of my top rated songs. I just love this collection.
This is not a good digital recording.......1999-07-27
There is a 'record player' hum in the background when you try to listen to various tracks on these CDs. The compilation is wonderful. The Quality of the recording is very disappointing. The outside of the album cover reads DDD which I thought to mean clean and clear all digital recording. Don't be deceived by the cover.

Fantastic .......2006-08-06
This is a delicate, soothing, mastery of East meeting West. My favorite selection on this CD is "Spinning," which is so very beautiful. I think that anyone would do well to add this to their collection.
Butterfly Lovers Concerto.......2005-10-07
A lovely recoding...not as breathtaking as the live performances I've heard, but divine to be able to hear this piece at will...no ticket required

Customer Reviews:
Great for beginner classical music fan, or seasoned.......2004-02-25
I've had this CD set for about 10 years, and I have always found it to be one of my favorites. I like the mix of pieces, and would recommend it to anyone, classical lover, or not.
I agree that there are some pieces that could be added to fill out the loving theme, but I think that the compilers did a great job, leaving little else to desire.
Buy it, you will enjoy it.
