Arbos
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
This CD features some great performances by Pärt specialists of a variety of shorter works. The clamorous Arbos for brass makes a startling opening for those who expect abstracted reverence; the lament, An den Wassern, has a startling ending that builds in intensity and volume only to break off midphrase. The static Pari Intervallo for organ leads into De Profundis, with its sense of slow but unstoppable movement (every note the same length, every measure the same rhythm). Es Sang has an unexpectedly lilting tune for solo alto, punctuated by string exclamations; Summa is a straightforward Pärt-style setting of the Credo. Arbos is repeated (this is oddly satisfying), and the disc closes with a masterpiece, the unbearably sad Stabat Mater for three voices and three strings. --Matthew Westphal

After TABULA RASA, the next stop for fans of Part's "holy minimalism".......2007-06-22
This ECM disc is an important document of the work of Estonian composer Arvo Part, containing as it does a number of important early pieces from the composer's "tintinnabuli" phase. If the earlier TABULA RASA on the same label is the traditional entry point into this style, ARBOS is where one should head next. And as with all ECM discs, the performers are Part's hand-picked men, giving a definitive sheen to the recordings.
Those who have heard the TABULA RASA disc are familiar with "Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten" for bell and strings. That's a mensuration canon, where various instrumental parts play a descending scale in different speeds, but it is peaceful and contemplative. On this disc "Arbos" for 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, and percussion (1977) takes the same form, but with very different instrumentation, a faster tempo, and louder dynamics it obtains a very different sound. Those who think of Part only as a creator of calm moods will be surprised indeed by this piece which turns the basics of tintinnabuli writing towards a troubled, though fairly static, surface. The Staatsorchester Stuttgart conducted by Dennis Russell Davies gives a confident performance.
The other pieces here are performed by the Hilliard Ensemble. "Pari Intervallo" for organ (1976) does with that instrument what "Fur Alina" did with piano, display the sound of tinntinabuli in the simplest possible form. It's notable for being Part's calmest piece for organ; others are somewhat monsters.
The title of "An den Wassern zu Babel" for trombone and chamber orchestra (1986) refers to the well-known psalm, but instead of merely setting the text Part communicates the soul of the Israelites' lament though anguished vocalizations. The a capella "Summa" (1986), on the other hand, sets the Nicene Creed without any emotional edge whatsoever, letting the listener soberly listen to its theological truths, a good counter to, say, the Glagolitic Mass of Janacek.
"De Profundis" for male chorus, percussion & organ (1980) sets Psalm 130. While the chorus and percussion range everywhere through the seven-minute length of the piece, the organ maintains a slow ostinato much like in "Pari Intervallo".
Though Part usually sets Biblical or liturgical texts, "Es sang vor langen Jahren" for counter-tenor or alto with violin & viola (1984) is a setting of a poem by Clemens Brentano talking of a human lover and a nightingale. The music is fairly standard Part, though. Perhaps a little too standard, for I have a hard time enjoying this piece, which doesn't do much to stand out.
"Stabat Mater" (1987) is at 25 minutes the longest piece on the disc, and one of Part's greatest achievements. A setting of the well-known hymn, it consists of alternating sections focusing either on chorus or the violin, here performed by the great Gidon Kremer. The text telling of the Theotokos sorrowfully gazing at Christ on the Cross is, as one can expect, set solemnly indeed, but surprising are the joyful dance-like cadences led by the violin that break in.
While most of the music here is mainstream tintinnabuli, "An den Wassern zu Babel" (1976) is unusual, coming after Part's creative silence but not squaring with his new style. It displays the composer's interest in medieval music, and is closer to his Symphony No. 3 of several years previously than to "Fur Alina" written the same year and the tintinnabuli pieces that have followed.
One regrets that ECM places "Arbos" here twice--the label is infamous for rarely putting together enough material to nicely fill a disc. That and the presence of the frankly dull "Es sang for langen Jahren" causes me to subtract a star. Nonetheless, those who have heard TABULA RASA and want to head deeper into Part's singular soundworld are highly encouraged to check out this disc which, as a fellow reviewer noted, is strangely neglected.
An excellent recording of sacred music.......2007-03-22
This was the first Arvo Pärt recording I ever heard. I think that was around 1993? I heard the Stabat Mater on a long drive from Melbourne to Ballarat, where I was performing in a midday concert of Renaissance and Baroque music as a part of an Arts festival held in that great country city.
I was alone in the car, listening to ABC Classic FM, as always, and I heard all of the Statbat Mater. I was captivated by this poignant, sublime and beautiful music. The three soloists, soprano, countertenor and tenor, sing the music with great style and beauty. The melodic lines seem to be weightless and float through each other in a very graceful way. The work is accompanied by a small group of string instruments.
I bought the recording when I got back to Melbourne and it has been a favourite of mine ever since. I also bought the Hilliard Ensemble's recording of the Pärt St. John Passion, commonly known as the Passio.
Lovers of the music of John Tavener and Henryk Gorecki, who haven't heard any of Pärt's music will be in for a very pleasant surprise.
Pärt on song, yet somehow neglected.......2006-06-09
This disc, one of many ECM recordings of the music of Arvo Pärt, has often seemed to be rather neglected compared to the higher profile Tabula Rasa or Alina (just compare the number of reader reviews of those discs to this one). Yet it's a disc that contains one of the composer's finest works (Stabat Mater) and a collection of shorter pieces that show him to great advantage.
The brass-and-percussion fanfare Arbos is a brief, rapid series of descending scalic melodies overlaid in a canonic structure similar to that of Pärt's justly famous Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten (the sound of bells is also prominent in both works). Though much more active on the surface--and louder--than the more famous work, Arbos has the same static overall feel. It is succeeded by An den Wassern zu Babel, a setting for organ and four voices of the Waters of Babylon passage from Psalm 137. Probably the most stylistically complex work on this disc (dating from 1976, it forms a transitional work between the Third Symphony and Pärt's mature minimalism), it is unusually dissonant for the composer, and bears the influence of Sibelus and the liturgical Stravinsky as well as Pärt's love of early music. Though dating from the same year, the organ elegy Pari Intervallo is a much simpler work, slowly rocking between consonances on its serene path.
The next three works all date from the early maturity of Pärt's minimalist style. The gently ritualistic De Profundis layers triadic harmonies in the upper voices over the organ and bass voice, Es sang von langen Jahren restricts development mostly to the alto range (alto singing with the accompaniment of violin and viola), and the four-voice Summa is perhaps one of the most characteristic examples of Pärt's tintinnabular harmonies and slow-moving minimalism.
After a second performance of Arbos, the disc closes with the main focus of the disc, the Stabat Mater for three voices and string trio. This work, written for the 50th anniversary of Alban Berg's death (like another late 20th century masterpiece, Alfred Schnittke's string trio), extends the procedures of the previous works over 25 minutes--adding passages of great dramatic intensity to contrast the more minimalist sections.
Though I am far from an uncritical admirer of Pärt's work, I think this disc is an excellent selection of his music. If ultimately I have returned to the Stabat Mater much more often than the shorter works which precede it, this is as much as tribute to its qualities as to any failings on the part of the other works on the disc.
An icy wind of delicious sadness .......2004-08-17
Arvo Part creates a world where bleakness becomes almost an indulgence, and upon the first hearing of Stabat Mater you'll feel an icy wind of delicious sadness blow over your eager and expectant frown. The solo organ piece Pari Intervallo (which can also be found on the purely organ album Trivium), is a study in restrained and sterile beauty, meaning that the piece (and most of the tintinnabuli pieces) doesn't crash and bellow and forcefully announce its intent, but whispers it in cold hintings. As for myself, I will not hint: buy this album now.
Some gems.......2002-02-10
All of this music was new to me before listening to this disc. I assume the performances are definitive, so the issue is, how attractive is the music itself? To me the winner on this CD is track 4, De Profundis, almost 7 minutes of austere beauty for organ, small choir and remarkably effective percussion (bell and gong). Track 6, the Summa (Credo) is nice, but the music seems to be content to create a somewhat mystical mood, and does not reflect the text (like many mass Credos do). The major work on the disc is track 8, the Stabat Mater, a very austere piece. It has not won me over yet.

Minneapolis Symphony Shines Again.......2005-11-11
This box set of recordings by the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (known today as the Minnesota Orchestra) is a dream come true for anyone who grew up hearing this magnificent group either live or on LP. Listeners cannot help but be impressed by their remarkable clarity, rhythmic vitality, and artful precision (dare I call it the "Minneapolis Sound"?)- especially when you consider that these recordings were made in the 50s and 60s on the stage of Northrup Auditorium at the University of Minnesota.
Antal Dorati had a keen ear for orchestral color, and this collection is a lasting testament to his instincts. Anyone who reveres the old recordings by such conductors as Ormandy, Bernstein, Reiner, Szell, et al., are highly encouraged to check out this collection. The hauntingly exotic "Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee" by Gunther Schuller (commissioned by the Orchestra) is an all-too-rare gem that deserves to be heard - a modern-day "Pictures at an Exhibition".
Dorati carried his concepts of color over to his recordings with the London Symphony Orchestra, as the Stravinsky and Prokofiev selections will attest.
I encourage audiophiles to discover one of those "other" orchestras from "back then". I think it will be a "sound" investmment.
Dorati's MLP Gems Are Back!.......2005-10-03
Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon know of my great love for the Mercury Living Presence series. Equally great is my disgust that so many of these brilliant recordings have been deleted in the last few years! Thankfully, some of these legendary performances are resurfacing, and while the single disc SACD Hybrid titles are unfortunately listed at full-price, it is wonderful to see the various multi-disc sets basically being sold at budget line. With this 5CD reissue, some of Antal Dorati's legendary MLP recordings are restored to the catalog, as all of the original single issue CDs of these titles had all gone out-of-print over the last few years. To illustrate how prized these recordings are by collectors, if you wanted to buy these five titles just a few months ago in the Amazon Marketplace it would have cost you four times the price of this new set! Buying this collection for Dorati's accounts of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Petrouchka alone is worthwhile, as they are two of those works greatest performances. Of course getting memorable recordings of Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel, Don Juan, Death & Transfiguration and the conductor's own Suite from Der Rosenkavalier; Prokofiev's 5th Symphony and Suites from Scythian and Love for Three Oranges; Albeniz' Iberia Suite along with Falla, Moussorgsky and Smetana excerpts; and Gershwin's American in Paris, Copland's Rodeo Dances, and some wild Schuller and Bloch compositions (whew!) is just more to get excited about. Overall, it makes for quite an attractive package -- glorious golden age stereo recordings returned to the catalog at a very reasonable price. Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!

Inconsistent.......2002-08-20
If browsing through the catalogue, you might get the impression that this recording of all pieces from Iberia is the one to go for already because it's complete. But what you basically get is works from 2 transcribers, the one being a very good orchestrator, the other one unfortunately not. You can easily tell from the majority of recordings that Arbos is the skillful one. The Surinach pieces are almost exclusively based on bright colors and do not have a very varied thickness of orchestration as well (mostly only 2 instruments/groups play). It sounds as if older Strawinsky had done it. At least after the 2nd piece you will be getting pretty tired of it. Lopez-Cobos rather cautious way with them does not help either. But what a difference the Arbos transcriptions are ! He is really a masterly orchestrator in the Ravel style and you could not think of these pieces being done much better. Even Lopez-Cobos warms up a lot with them.
Conclusion: Buy any set with the Arbos Suite alone; that is the one to go for. The present recording for it alone is not bad too, but don't expect the highest Telarc standard. The recording in 2 channel is marginally too bright, probably having to do with the Surround encoding.
Sinewy Spanish Music........2002-04-26
This collection of Albeniz's complete Iberia was originally written for the piano. The orchestrations are courtesy of Enrique Fernandez Arbos and Carlos Surinach. And what a wonderful job they did too. Iberia might be best described as the Spanish equivalent of Copland's Americana. They are full of flourishes and motives that spell out Spain as clear as Hoe-Down sells beef. The twelve pieces together form an intricate travelogue across landscapes, colors, temperatures and moods....Lopez-Cobos conducts with an afternoon laziness that permeates the relaxed atmosphere of the work. The Cincinnati Symphony is tight and the sound quality is perfect, almost tropical. This is a great disc to unwind and be carried out of yourself.
Impressive Impressionism.......2001-06-06
There are few recordings of Isaac Albeniz's complete Iberia scored for orchestra, especially one with a full & rich sound as well as a stunningly poignant interpretation by Jesus Lopez Cobos.
Albeniz, in his youth, after running away from home several times, was exposed to a great number of cultural and eventually musical influences. His travels took him around Spain, his homeland, as well as South America, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and even San Francisco. After settling down back in Spain, he took up friends and colleagues such as Faure, Dukas, Debussy, and Chausson, all leading composers and performers of the time, as well as bold influences on where music was going at that time.
Meanwhile, Albeniz, taking in all of these influences, composes some wonderfully rich music including a series of four books of music for piano, all tied together with a common theme, called Iberia: a musically romantic/impressionistic description of the beautiful lands and exciting events of his homeland. Each book contains three separate pieces of music, each a musical portrait of Spain, and each one exhibiting a spanish dance of some kind.
Traditionally, recordings of Iberia are fast and brash showstoppers, as recorded by Batiz on ASV, and it really misses the heart and the depth of Impressionism that Albeniz was trying to display. Instead, Cobos and the Cincinnati Symphony slow the tempos down for a majesterial and autthentic look at Spain. His tempos allow freedom to experience the sumptuous and often exotic rhythms and harmonies of the Spanish culture with out barreling right through them. In listening to this recording, Iberia becomes even more impressionistic than Debussy or Ravel and is quite a treat.
This is a real treat for the ears with Telarc's fine Digital sound, true excitement and passionate musicality in a fabulous recording of Iberia. In addition, you get TWO CD's, 82 minutes for the PRICE OF ONE!! Get this terrific buy.
For lovers of Spanish-themed music.......2000-09-14
For those who enjoy Spanish rhythms, there are a few must-have works. Ironically, some of these are the work of non-Spaniards: Carmen by Bizet, Capriccio Espangol by Rimsky-Korsakov, Bolero by Ravel (true, he was of Basque parentage, but a French citizen) and Espana by Chabrier. Then there are key works by Spaniards: Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo, The Three-Cornered Hat and Nights in the Gardens of Spain by de Falla, and, of course, Iberia.
Albeniz (1860-1909) wrote primarily for the piano. After his death, the popularity of Iberia grew after it was orchestrated. The version of Iberia that you hear in this set actually comes from the hands of two different orchestrators who, working independently, each transcribed several of the 12 vignettes in the original work. Happily, it all hangs together rather well. For their part, Lopez-Cobos and the Cincinnati Symphony do a solid job, with energy and feeling. Just note that, while this is a 2 CD set, the total playing time is only 82 minutes.

Customer Reviews:
Hesperion XX and others.......2007-03-28
This is a truly inspirational disc that features several different artists. I came across this disc years ago because of my interest in time period music performed by Jordi Savall and the lovely voice of Monteserrat Figueras in the group Hesperion XX. Both are featured on this disc extensively. Listening to this music is almost like a religious experience, it elevates your senses beyond the mundane for a richly rewarding experience; it is an auditory time warp. Essentially this is a compilation of time period music with compositions mostly from the 1500's. Besides the fabulous work by Hesperion XX the disc also includes some interesting work by Hopkinson Smith on Vihuela while Figueras sings in her lovely soprano voice. There are also some nice orchestra pieces most notably by Issac Ibeniz on "Iberia, El Puerto" which is a lush theme that would sit well in a movie about Spain's Golden Age, Manuel de Falla's beautiful compostion of "El Sombrero De Tres Picos" as performed by Joven Orchestra Nacional de Espana and Roberto Gerhard's "Don Quijote Albada Danza" as performed by the Orchestra Sinfonica de Tenerife. Also of note is the work of Francisco Guerau and the magical baroque guitar of Hopkinson Smith as performed on "Treze diferencias de Canario." Listening to this music reminds one of the grandeur of Spains's past in the Age of Discovery. This is classical album for people like me, who really don't know that much about classical music but realizes good music when he hears it. Recommended for people who like to listen to time period music and the interpretations of Hesperion XX.
This is the best classical music.......2001-02-05
I did'nt really like classical music till i bought España - Anthology of Spanish Music CD. I really, really love this CD. If your an artist and sometimes lack inspiration, I recommend this CD! It will get you in the mood to paint!
Great collection.......2000-11-04
Two complaints: no liner notes so any potential educational value is lost (I have a number of reference books around the house and some of these composers don't show up anywhere in them) and there is at least one extremely jarring organ work that blasts out of nowhere. A more listener friendly compilation would've sequenced the disc differently or left it out alltogether. That said, this is a wonderful collection of music that I have (mostly) never heard before. I'm glad Naive Astree saw fit to put a lot of obscure and out-of-print recordings together to form this audio introduction to an underappreciated canon.
Highlights include:
Track 8 - Jordi Savall (gamba), Ton Koopman (harpsichord), and Rolf Lislevand (lute) turn in a brief but jaunty chamber performance of Ortiz. Left me wanting more.
Track 11 - Hesperion XX give a haunting vocal performance of Morales' Pie Jesu Domine. I'm not one to ususally appreciate this sort of music (so consider me uninformed) but I found this truly beautiful.
Track 15 - features Hopkinson Smith on the baroque guitar performing a fascinating Guerau work. Descending arpeggios like gentle, trickling waterfalls. Smith is a stunning performer. I wish he was better known in the U.S.
Track 22 - from Haydn's original orchestral version of "The Seven Last Words Of Christ On The Cross," this is the one tempestuous movement from a work of mostly subdued music. Deep, powerful string sound from Savall's Le Concert Des Nations. Very well recorded.
While I'd like to know more about the works and the composers behind them there is so much here to be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level that I can't whine too much. If you have any interest, by all means pick up this bargain. You will be introduced to a number of great performers and works.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful music; astonishing recording.......2004-07-29
Great pieces of (mostly modern but nevertheless extremely accessible) classical music, wonderfully performed by the DWS and Fennell, and moreover, fabulously recorded and produced by Professor Johnson for Reference Recordings. Dynamic range, detail, and presence of the highest degree; as a consequence, my inner geek always chooses Trittico when it comes to checking out new hi-fi gizmos. Thoroughly recommended: turn it up to 11.
Awesome.......2003-01-28
Okay, as we all know, the DWS is awesome. Well, this recording has just raised the bar for me. Their recording of 'Trittico' is great. Its energetic, and fun. I played this piece last year in wind ensemble, and I know how difficult it is. It is very technical and has a lot of dynamic changes that should be executed precisely. If you like the Dallas Wind Symphony and like Nelhybel's works, then get this cd. You wont regret it.
Holy Cow!.......2000-11-18
Absolutely amazing playing on this CD. I can't get enough of this recording. Trittico is incredible. If you play loudly, you'll scare the pants off your neighbor. I've heard many great recordings for wind ensemble. This is one of my favorites. I've purchased this for many of my friends.
Great recording.......2000-01-30
Absolutely wonderful ensemble playing by an outstanding group and conductor. I can't listen to this disc enough, especially Trittico which according to my resources, was recorded in 1 take. Make sure you have a good sound system to get the full power and depth
