This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

This CD along with the others in the series is very good. So far we have collected about ten different ones. They are thorough and interesting. I homeschool and it has been a great additon to our teaching materials and tools. The narrarated history format interspersed with the composer's music is key to keeping the interest of the children. A must-have for introducing classical music with historical background to your kids and at a great price on Amazon!

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Is it a two-CD set with a particularly thick booklet, or a 562-page book with a compilation album attached? Either way, the unpretentious text by Keith Anderson offers an introduction to the lives and works of dozens of composers, together with recommended recordings from the Naxos and Marco Polo catalogs. Anderson includes a useful 59-page glossary of musical terms and an extensive listing of classical pieces used in films. The odd thing about the 36 extracts and complete pieces on the CDs is that they do not form an A-to-Z at all. Rather, they are arranged chronologically, from 1,000-year-old Gregorian chant to the opening movement of contemporary composer Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Between these two points is the early music of Palestrina and Byrd; the Baroque glories of Vivaldi and Bach; the 19th-century Romantic masters, from Beethoven to Tchaikovsky; and such 20th-century greats as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. Opera, song, and chamber music are barely represented, but only so much can fit into 151 minutes. Essentially a deluxe sampler of the vast Naxos catalogue, the discs offer a good introduction to some of the most famous and melodic music ever composed, while the book will be very useful to newcomers to the potentially confusing world of classical music. --Gary S. It's only natural we sometimes hit the high seas....make that Cs. This is one box set about which we sing praises. This set features more than two hours of the finest music from across the centuries by such composers as Schubert, Chopin, Mozart, Handel, Stravinsky and Glass. Naxos is a fabulous label -- you will not get samples of the best classical music through the ages at no better price. These tracks are as good as any of the over-priced major orchestras and in some cases better. This is a great starter set for a beginner or anyone who just wants to "taste" the classics. If you prefer Opera I would suggest the A to Z of Opera -- most of the tracks on A to Z Classical are orchestral. I was so impressed with this collection that I purchased the Discover the Classics Vol's 1-3 which will give you a more detailed look at the great classics. Take a look at the Naxos web site at NAXOSUSA.COM -- what you will see will blow your mind -- there are literally thousands of pieces that you could listen too!

At this price, how can one complain?.......2001-09-30

This is pretty much a CD version of a mini-Naxos and Marco Polo catalog. All the pieces and extracts are ordered chronologically on the 2 CDs and are of very acceptable quality, but don't expect excellence in every track. Personally, I was particularly disappointed with one of my favourite Pachelbel pieces. The Naxos Canon & Gigue lacks all the emotion of my favourite versions.

Still, any possible weaker performances are of little importance after you get your hands on the fat booklet with over 500 pages. The booklet offers a short intro about the great composers, a glossary of musical terms, a list of works used in films and dozens of illustrations of several composers.

Overall, at this price, this is a must-have pack for any beginner, and might be useful for the occasion "quick check" of the work of many composers. Do not expect many detail, nor references to all the works of some composers; I often got frustrated with the lack of detail in some cases, but in general, the booklet is very effective for a quick reference.
You will need more titles that offer more complete information, and you won't truly learn to love classical music just by reading it, but it is small and compact.

It really puzzles me why Naxos did not include a full index of composers, a serious omission. To find a particular composer you will have to look for it yourself in over 500 pages. Also, the separation of the text is not so good, making the search even a bit slower. The lack of the index is truly annoying and I am sure it will be corrected in future editions.

Even with a few weaker pieces and the lack of the index, at this price, there isn't much to argue about. This is truly a bargain that you should not miss. I would also recommend the A-Z of Opera, which offers a bigger booklet with over 700 pages, focusing on opera works and mentioning several composers that are absent from the A-Z of Classical. That other booklet has a very complete index, and much clearer text layout and separation, that's the way both booklets should have been designed.

Pieces too lengthy and ambient for a 'best of'........2003-11-17

'Greatest Hits' compilations are purposeful for those who don't want 'the whole piece'.This cd has too many long and ambient versions to be suitable for beginners to Brahms.Alot of his outstanding moments are 'blended in', rather than 'stood out'.So his melodic element is missed on some selections.But there are stand-outs.This Hungarian Dance n.5 is the most extravagent version i've heard.The tempo-changes are clever, and the orchestra packs a gypsy punch.A couple of the chamber works are great (tho u can find similar to those versions on many brahms' best of's).I find the melody of 'lullaby' is a bit lost in how very slowly it's done.Most 'Brahms' Greatest Hits' do focus more heavily on his orchestral pieces.This one also does, so I feel theres too few of his great chamber (trio/4tet/5tet) themes.

What can you say about George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra? No other conductor and orchestra has ever turned in performances of such discipline and transparency of sound--not Karajan and Berlin, not Solti and Chicago--no one! A powerful, tense Brahms First in the Toscanini style--but get the new remastering.......2006-08-04

Only Toscaninni led the Brahms First with more tension and drive, but the closest approximation is this classic Szell performance, which has been widely admired for over four decades. The budget issue pictured above is from 1991, in indifferent sound. As of August, 2006, there's a new DSD version in Sony's Great Performances series. And great performance it surely is. Szell's condcuting, as always, is disciplined and devoid of rubato or sentimental softness. The secret when the reins are held this tight is to propel the music forward as if in one breath, never letting the stainless steel thread sanp.

It's an unconventional way to approach Brahms but a bracing one. Fortunately, Szell doesn't lapse into rigid time-beating: this reading is alive inside, full of dramatic events in every movement. The Cleveland Orch. plays with great power and transpaency, and the refurbished sonics are twice as good as they ever were on Epic lPs when this recording first appeared. Of a piece is Szell's highly controlled reading of the Haydn Vairations. Curiously, in both this version and the new reissue, Sony has tacked on five Hungarian Dances by Ormandy, which don't sound like they even come from the same planet as Szell's Brahms but make nice listening.

"A bit of musicality, please!!!!".......2006-03-30

This recording of Brahm's 1st Symphony is musical garbage. George Szell was well known and critized for his precision. When dealing with classical greats like Mozart and Haydn, George Szell is one of the first conductors I seek after. I recommend his recordings of Mozart's 39th, 40th, and 41st. But!!! George Szell's abilities as a Romantic Period conductor (Brahms!) are lacking in the highest degree. Listening to this recording is like having to look at van Gogh's "Starry Night" painted with nothing but straight lines. As for BOXED SETs of the Brahm's Symphonies, Otto Klemperer's recording comes with my highest recommendations. Otto Klemperer KNEW the work of Brahms like few else. He even chided himself for writing pieces that sounded more like Brahms than like Klemperer. His recording of the Brahms Symphonies is available on EMI Classic's 'Great Recordings of the Century' label.

Classic Szell, Excellent Ormandy.......2005-10-15

This is, simply put, classic George Szell. In fact, this performance of the Brahms 1st takes its place near the top of the heap. It is a great performance and an excellent addition to any collection, especially at bargain price. If you're looking for the a bit more overt emotion, try Bruno Walter or Otto Klemperer- they turn in ectsatic and soulful readings. Szell's take has a quicker, drier, and more immediate feel to it, but he totally makes it work: in my opinion that goes for just about everything he performed (there was a reason he is known for his precision). The Ormandy performances of the Hungarian Dances are equally rewarding, played with shining flourish. Classic.

Brahms grandioso.......2004-12-15

Szell es un director notable y sus versiones para las sinfonias de Brahms son geniales (la cuarta es una de las mejores que he escuchado), este conductor es pulcro y refinado, bastante explosivo y potente (su obertura carnaval de Dvorak es de lo mas impresionante), y se dice un dictador de la batuta, en ensayos extenuantes.
Pero en esta Nº1 Szell excedio el ensayo y se quedo algo fria, por cierto es una notable version sobre muchas otras pero carece de vigor y excede en la sutileza y la sublimidad.
La segunda obra la hermosa Variaciones sobre un tema de Haydn, se plantea distinta y nota una presentacion recia, sutil y solemne, y por cierto un toque de alegria verdaderamente encantador.
La orquesta de Cleveland es soberbia y se esmera para sonar simplemente impecable.
Se añaden y como relleno 5 danzas hungaras, suenan muy bien, Ormandy es un director soberbio que logra interpretaciones inmejorables, la Orquesta de Filadelfia es definitivamente perfecta.

Brahms made weak by Szell.......2004-05-08

No one doubts that Szell has contributed to the music industry any number of recordings of classical masterpieces. But his intepretation of them makes you wonder what makes these pieces so great in the first place. I grew to like Brahms because of his first symphony when I heard it performed by the Kansas City Symphony years ago. Then I went out to find a recording of it. The one I selected was Szell and the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. This was not the same work.

Szell took the opening way too fast and the tympani was held back in reserve when it should have been out in the forefront. The brass section was weak as well, especially in the fourth movement with the three solo trombones which is reprised at the end by the whole orchestra. And it was taken too fast. No susbstance, no fire. And this for a work, which the composer admitted was Beethoven's tenth? Beethoven's fire was lacking.

3.5 stars -- a good starter set if the cost is not an issue.......2007-04-10

This import box represents Bernard Haitink's best Brahms orchestral output, recorded from 1970-80 during his heyday with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The remastering hasn't changed the sound much from the days these were released on silent surface vinyl recordings; the only difference I can hear is a bit more on the bottom. The upper range is identical to the vinyl pressings from that bygone era.

What has changed since the original release is Haitink's approach to Brahms. He later recorded most of the symphonies with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and has, in recent years, recorded them again with the London Symphony Orchestra on its Live label with some available in the super audio format. These recordings are more mature, slower, stodgier and less well-conceived, in my opinion, than his work in this set.

Perhaps along similar lines, these performances eschew the posturing and philosophizing conductors have put forthi in Brahms scores since the days of Furtwangler. Haitink is by contrast eminently straightforward, as he was in virtually all repetory in his salad days in Amsterdam.

My favorites in this set are the same as they were during the days these were out on vinyl -- the sunny Symphony No. 2, which exposes the best in Haitink's personality as well as the euphonius sounds of the Concertgebouw brass. The disk of the two Serenades is another personal favorite, especially that earlier Serenade in D major with its 15-minute adagio. The mating of Symphonies 2 & 3 on a single CD is another of the high points of the set, which you have to buy in order to get this recording.

The less successful Symphonies Nos. 1 and 4, which require a bit more brooding, drama and understandinig than Haitink offers here to be fully accomplished, are available new on single disks for as little at $5-$6. This set offers a number of makeweights to fill out disks -- the Haydn variations and three Hungarian dances with Symphony 4; the Tragic and Academic Festival overtures accompany Symphony No. 1 -- that are all good without being masterful.

What most works against this set is the relatively high import cost and the fact that it takes four CDs to deliver the symphonies. When you consider that Karajan's remastered set from the same period is available on two disks for about $12 and you can buy Bruno Walter's beloved Brahms symphonies, accompanied by more substantial add-ons than here, on three disks for around $15, it places this set at a great disadvantage. You really have to be sold on Haitink to choose this over these and other historic recordings.

The great advantage, of course, is the addition of the two Serenades, a real jewel in this compendium, and the handsome packaging that includes a 34-page booklet in three languages with adequate notes and a bio on the conductor. In addition, this is still Haitink's best attempt at recording Brahms major orchestral works and is several notches better than his later recordings.

A good starter set, then, if cost is not an issue. More experienced collectors probably already have several versions of everything herein and may want to consider whether this meets any unmet need based on the conductor's literal style and the glorious playing and sound of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Magnificent, highly energized Brahms--Karajan's only rival from the Seventies.......2006-02-23

Haitink was fairly new leading the Concertgebouw when he recored this Brahms cycle from 1970-73, yet the two are in remarkable sympathy. He asks for vibrant, energized playing, and they deliver beyond all expectation. These performances are frequently hair-raising; for sheer excitement they rival Toscanini and Karajan, withuot the former's tightness or the latter's grandiosity (great as both are).

Haitink's Brahms manages to be powerful and genial at the same time, combining Bruno Walter's tenderness with dazzling virtuosity. A reviewer can kill a recording with praise, but I defy anyone not to find these readings spellbinding and deeply moving. It's like hearing all four symphonies for the first time (the same goes for the incidental overtures and the two serenades, which were recorded later in 1976 and 1980).

If you have only heard the dull Brahms performances that Haitink later delivered in Boston and London, you will be astonished at these early ones. Philips provides excellent analog sound with lots of impact, miked very close to give us a conductor's perspective. I can only say that I regret overlooking this Brahms cycle for so long and now must place it at the very top of the list.

Outstanding Brahms Fourth in a Crowded Field!.......2007-03-17

Bernard Haitink's 1972 recording of Brahms' Fourth Symphony with the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam stands out above the crowd for two key reasons: it is the most exciting rendition of this work that I have ever heard and it features virtuosic and polished orchestral playing from what is arguably the greatest orchestra in the world. Additionally, the sound quality is so good--clarity, ambience, orchestral detail, and lack of hiss--that you will be sure it is a top-notch digital recording even though it is not.

Haitink maintains a consistent tension throughout the work, never letting go. The first movement is given great forward momentum, the second is rhythmically taut (as opposed to lackluster, too often the case in this movement), the third bursts out with limitless energy, and the last sizzles with the drama and darkness befitting this work. Even the recent highly-praised account by Kent Nagano with the German SO of Berlin, as good as it is, is not in the same league as this Haitink recording. Besides, the Nagano CD costs about three times as much as this one! To top it off, Haitink delivers a beautiful account of the Haydn Variations that is lyrical and melodic. The orchestral playing is once again as good as it gets. Every section of the orchestra does its part magnificently. As a bonus, we are given the (only) three Hungarian Dances which Brahms himself orchestrated, played with great flair and with a real sense of the Bohemian and dance-like qualities of the music.

In sum, the performances on this CD are must-haves for Brahms fans. Probably even some who were not previously will be won over to this composer by virtue of these performances. With the most exciting Brahms Fourth I know of, outstanding fillers, and excellent sound quality, this CD would be a no-brainer at full price. At budget price, it is a steal.

Brahms From Amsterdam.......2006-03-19

One of the great Brahms cycles recorded during the last half century was the one done between 1970 and 1980 for Philips by the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam and its great music director from 1964 to 1987, Bernard Haitink. Part of the proof of this can be seen on this remastered recording by the Universal Music Group, of which Philips is a part, of works from that cycle--the Fourth Symphony (recorded in June 1972); the Haydn Variations (recorded in June 1973); and the 1st, 3rd, and 10th Hungarian Dances (all three dances recorded in October 1980).

The world-class sound of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the concert hall for which it is named shine in this recording. The Fourth Symphony, arguably one of Brahms' most dramatic pieces, is given a finely crafted performance; while the Haydn Variations, the work that placed Brahms on the orchestral map in 1868, are given a very steady rendering under Haitink's skillful direction. The Hungarian Dances, meanwhile, give the orchestra and the conductor the means to stretch out musically, and the finished result overall justifies both Haitink's and the Concertgebouw Orchestra's place in the classical music pantheon. None of the pieces is delivered in a heavy-handed fashion, but the drama of them definitely comes through all the same.

More wonderful Brahms from an energized young Haitink.......2006-02-23

Bernard Haitink can be a cautious, unimaginative condcutor, more so as he aged. But this Brahms Fourth from 1972 is sweeping, energetic, and full of lyricism. It stands out for excellent analog sound and the gorgeous sonority of the Concergenouw, also. There is such depth of tone to go with Haitnik's depth of feeling that I was carried away--as I have been by all of his early Brahms from the Seventies. If anything, this installment is actually the least extraordinary; the First, Second, and Third are especially magnificent. All told, this CD goes to the top of my list for a bargain Brahms Fourth and equals Carlos Kleiber as best of all in modern sound.

This is the finest performance of the complete Hungarian Dances. Antal Dorati, a Hungarian himself and a specialist in dance music, handles each of these jewels with just the right combination of rhythmic control and schmaltz. Brahms orchestrated only a few of them; the remainder were done by friends (Dvorák included) or commissioned by various music publishers to fill out the complete set. In this respect, they are less substantial than Dvorák's two sets of Slavonic Dances, which they in turn inspired. If you know only No. 5, or perhaps No. 1, then you owe it to yourself to hear this delightful collection. --David Hurwitz

Surprisingly ordinary in every way.......2007-05-22

"Legendary" recordings often have a self-sustaining reputation, and that seems to be the case here. Dorati was a second-tier conductor who had his heyday with Mercury Living Presence, thanks to their advanced stereo sonics in the late Fifties and early Sixties. He was definitely at his strongest in ballet (which David Hurwitz calls "dance music"), but even though we get springy rhythms here, the recorded sound is thin and lacks body, while Dorati's readings are basically zippy run-throughs. There's a lot more to Brahms's Hungarian Dances than meets the ear on this CD. I can see why critics find Karajan too polished and Abbado tepid, but Kubelik, for one, gets more out of these dances in his classic DG set. Also consider Ivan Fischer on Philips, a reading with more elan than Dorati and in much better sound.

A real winner.......2002-06-16

In listening to this CD, I am amazed how crystal clear and dazzling the sound is, in spite of the fact that some of these recorings date from as far back as 1957 (the others are from 1960 and 1965). Kudos to recording engineer C. R. Fine. Dorati is obviously enjoying himself immensely in this music. In particular, he milks the Roumanian Rhapsody #2 for all it's worth. A must-have disc.

But I don't know what it is, and I own several of the Hungarian Dances. Dorati had a special affinity for the Hungarian Dances which was noted throughout his career, and it shows. The London Symphony is able to move from classically elegant to extremely folksy in the course of two measures, and the use of rubato throughout all of the dances is extraordinary (I can't imagine how one could follow a conductor so well.)

The Enescu 2nd Rhapsody is an extra treat -- one usually only hears the 1st.

The early 1960s "Living Presence" sound is not as atmospheric as one often hears these days, but conveys the immediacy of the music extremely well.

And all of this at a reasonable price, too!

Orchestrally excellent, excitingly up-tempo performances.......2000-09-18

This conductor gives one the sense, after listening to many of his recordings, that he has that special ability to energize a score. I bought the Mercury Golden Imports LP of these performances knowing I was in for a thrilling ride and I wasn't disappointed. It seemed like ages before the CD finally appeared and it really is one to treasure. Dorati knew that if one were to play this music it should be played for all it is worth. A really fun CD that proves one doesn't have to pay full price to get the best.
