Duparc: Chansons

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
In a relatively short career as a composer, curtailed by illness, Henri Duparc left a small group of songs that have since proved a major part of French song repertoire. The songs for tenor and piano recorded on this disc are notable for their poetic atmosphere, emotional intensity and exquisite technique. Highlights include L’invitation au voyage, set to words by Baudelaire and perhaps Duparc’s best known song, the deeply felt Elégie, the dramatic Le manoir de Rosemonde, with its haunted search, and the harmonically adventurous Chanson triste.

In many respects, Lily Pons was the Galli-Curci of her generation: a winning combination of good looks, charm, an appealing and non-confrontational timbre, and easy facility in the stratosphere. Those who learned the "Mad Scene" from Lucia di Lammermoor or the "Bell Song" from Lakmé via the original 78s back in the 40s will be bowled over by the vivid detail and lack of background noise in these stunning Sony restorations. First-time listeners will marvel at her effortless passagework and high notes (she often transposed her arias up on records); but may be put off by a slight thinness in the middle register (not evident in her Odeon recordings from the late 20s), sketchy intonation at times, and expedient aspirating in downward scales. Although these selections encompass a gamut of stylistic and emotional contrasts, you'd scarcely know it from the singer's pleasant but characterless interpretations, which tickle the ear without quite racking the brain. --Jed Distler

This could have been recorded yesterday, the sound quality is excellent and without blemish. By far the best recordings of Pons I have, and I would like to have others. She reminds me of Jo, separation of notes, clear, real trills, a range to rival Sumac, flexibility to perfection, and always that today neglected once standard fare of the coloratura, the requisite leap to the top note at the end of an aria. And a pretty sound. I love this album.

5 out of 5 stars French Songs Transcribed for Cello; Result is Magical.......2000-08-14

Occasionally a CD appears that is pure magic. This is one of them. Mischa Maisky and Daria Hovora form an ideal team: each performs on an exquisite instrument, and the recording engineer has captured everything, balance and all. In my opinion, transcribing French songs from voice to cello is a "natural"--the cello, so much like the human voice, captures the intimacy and atmosphere beautifully.

Both performers are natural story tellers, and Maisky, with an almost uniquely seductive vibrato, unhurriedly describes the French romantic soul. If a phrase is to be caressed, he caresses it. It if needs to soar, he gives it exactly what it needs. And the pianissimos! His tone sometimes just seems to come out of nowhere, and the endings often promise never to end.

Being a cellist myself, I have to say that this masterpiece both inspires and teaches. It has been said that great art leaves one changed. This CD does that, and it deserves a place in every classical music collection.

The word "fabulous" seems vulgar when applied to the Spanish diva whose delicately shaded voice encompassed music from the middle ages to the present. This four-disc compilation emphasizes her song repertoire, to which she brought warmth, intelligence, linguistic integrity and irresistible sincerity. Her dignity makes listeners want to come to her, and she rewards them with an intimate, personal experience, especially in this small-scale repertoire by Ravel, Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, lots of Spanish composers and German masters such as Schubert and Brahms. --David Patrick Stearns

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome musicality.......2006-07-26

This 4-CD set is a tribute to the concert career of the great Victoria de Los Angeles. The first 3 CDs show her totally at home in the art song of France and of her native Spain. In the French art songs, her silvery, creamy tone, her legendary legato and her perfect French diction make for wonderful and unforgettable performances. These include a sensual Scheherazade, magnificient singing in the Duparc songs and a phenomenal Poeme de L'amour et de la mer of Chausson (try to keep your eyes dry by the end of La mort de l'amour). In the Chausson, while de Los Angeles does not opt for the intensely Wagnerian approach, her sensitive singing more than does justice to the poetry and the feelings of the character. The Spanish songs showcase de Los Angeles at her most natural, flamboyant and attractive singing. The tunes are catchy, full of bouncy rhythms and De Los Angeles's fabulous voice never ceases to amaze. The 4th CD shows the wonderful chemistry between de Los angeles and the great Gerald Moore. While she does not erase memories of Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf in the Schubert selections, the Brahms songs are excellent and her Faure songs here are earth shaking in their elegance and refinement. The Italian and the famous Handel aria helps to prove De Los Angeles's reputation as an excellent bel canto singer. Her duets with Fischer-Dieskau are absolutely memorable and gorgeous.
The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. A must-have for any collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous? Yes!!!.......1999-09-13

The album is a marvelous sampling of this great singer's artistry. Her performances of the French and Spanish composers are something special. The De Falla "Seven Popular Folksongs" are powerful, passionate; the last song, "Jota," raised the hair on the back of my neck.

I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.

As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.

5 out of 5 stars A great singer is fading away.......2005-12-08

At about the same time that recording companies were profitably supporting a "rivalry" between Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi, they were stirring up a similarly profitable competition between Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gérard Souzay. Imagine it, once there was a time in which money could be made from singing lieder!

Souzay, was born as Gérard Marcel Tisserand in 1918. He attended the Paris Conservatoire from 1940 to1945. In 1944, while still a student, he made his professional debut and his first two recordings. He did a limited amount of operatic work, even essaying the role of Don Giovanni, but his true field of operation was song. His opera career is represented on CD by memorable performances of "Manon" (with Beverly Sills) and "Pèlleas et Mèlisaunde," but his recorded songs from 1944 to 1987 number about 750 in at least fifteen different languages. He died in 2004.

I first became aware of Souzay more than forty years ago when a singer-friend suggested I try him when I got weary of Fischer-Dieskau. At the time I wondered how anyone could tire of the great German baritone. Not very long after that, of course, I found that I could bear the sound of the excellent but ubiquitous and damnably too-familiar sound of DF-D no longer. Gérard Souzay was an instant curative. To this day, it is Souzay's voice I hear in my mind when I think of the lieder of Schumann and Schubert. In French art song, Souzay was simply without rival.

I find to my dismay that the memory of this great French performer is fading. Amazon still lists 45 of his titles on CD, but only 22 of them are still in print (or whatever the proper term should be for a recording.) As I write this, only 13 of the 45 titles have attracted Amazon reviews and, worse, only seven of his solo CDs have been reviewed. This is more than dismaying; it's downright ominous. The memory of a wonderful talent seems well on its way to oblivion, to the sad diminishment of us all.

In January 2000, an unnamed Amazon reviewer wrote this of Souzay, "In these performances he surpassed Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in a number of respects -- sheer style, beauty and range of tone, naturalness, depth of expression". Yeah.

I found this CD by attending a Community Concert by Saarinen and DuBois. It was one of those evenings where the synergy between the performers and the audience was electric. The CD is a very good representation of what I heard in the concert. It was taped in 1998 in Toronto, where the artists are based. The CD contains some beautiful and unusual songs which I had never heard, as well as many favorites. Gloria Saarinen studied with Alfred Cortot and Guido Agosti, and DuBois studied with Peter Pears, and their musicality reflects it. This is a class act.

Highlights include L'invitation au voyage, set to words by Baudelaire and perhaps Duparc's best known song, the deeply felt Elégie, the dramatic Le manoir de Rosemonde, with its haunted search, and the harmonically adventurous Chanson triste.

5 out of 5 stars Superb singing and interpretation. Wonderful accompaniment.......1998-10-29

Nan Merriman not only has the voice but the appropriate style in these French and Spanish songs. No wonder she was a favorite of Toscannini. The playing of accompanist Gerald Moore is refined and displays why he was so great at his art. Testament has done a great job with the audio. Any lover of fine singing and the lied should have this CD in their collection.

4 out of 5 stars Sensitive accounts of intimate French songs.......2007-04-25

In an age of complete editions and other forms of elaborate programming, it is a delight to sit back and enjoy this somewhat random selection of beautiful songs, mostly familiar with a couple of rareties thrown in.

Dawson's voice is big and mature-sounding, with a burnished tone and exceptional support. What's striking is how she uses these gifts: More than linguistic nuance, it is her vocal strengths that lend these performances their interpretive finesse. Her dynamic control, her supple instrument and plush sound give her great expressive power. I marvel at how much a sustained pianissimo, instead of a feeble drop-off, can add to a song's effectiveness. It's a subtle distinction, but she relies more on technique (portamento, rubato) than on getting inside the song texts.

I don't mean to say that she is interpretively weak, or indulges in producing a merely beautiful sound. Indeed, these are readings of sensitivity and insight. But it's not quite how the French approach the mélodie. She is more in line with Jessye Norman and Susan Graham than Ameling or Gens. While her French diction isn't wholly idiomatic, it is always astute and she masters even the peculiar prosody of Fauré's "Mandoline."

It is somewhat surprising that half the songs on the disk are by Poulenc, when Chausson and Duparc would be more natural fits. Nonetheless, Dawson is quite at home with all six composers in the program: the three already mentioned plus Faure, Chabrier, and Hahn. On a few songs, she and her accompanist tend toward slowish tempi, but her secure voice and the duo's rhythmic subtlety make it work. Hahn's "A Chloris" would be impossibly lugubrious without Dawson's admirable breath control to expand the phrasing. With Poulenc's "Nous voulons une petite soeur" she opts to tell a story rather than deliver a patter-song, and the results are just as delightful as other performances that are more overtly comic. On the hand, Poulenc's "Fancy" is inexplicably wan. That cavil aside, most of the songs are splendidly done, from the rapture of "Après un rêve" and the heartbreak of "Le temps des lilas" to the schmaltz of "Les chemins de l'amour" and the seductiveness of "Violon."
