Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 6-8

Editorial Reviews
From International Record Review - subscribe now
As the informative insert notes point out, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, although having performed under distinguished conductors, prefer to play without someone on the podium, deriving whatever direction they require from their leader's chair. This is how the ensemble (23 members supported by but one double-bass) is featured here. And as their title implies, they are a period-instrument group. Typical in this regard is an astringent, vibrato-free string tone, biting brass and piquant winds. Pitch, of course, is lowered, although to my ears it sounds a tad higher than the A=430 usually favoured by such groups.Surprisingly, this small group sometimes generates a more aptly imposing effect than larger modern ones have produced in this repertoire. The onset of dawn in the beginning of No. 6, for example, emerges with greater eruptive force than in the account led by Adam Fischer with a slightly larger group of instruments. Indeed, owing to fairly close miking and the realistic presence it produces, impact is full and, where necessary, even weighty. Although none of these works encompasses top-drawer Haydn, each has features that anticipate later mastery: sharply etched motifs imaginatively developed as well as unexpected modulations and pointed chromatic writing. And the many passages for solo violin serve as a reminder that Haydn had an orchestra leader (and first violinist in a quartet), Luigi Tomasini, whose virtuosity was respected throughout Europe. In all three works – from the comparative intimacy of some movements to the tempestuous ethos of the finale of No. 8 and the witty part-exchanges so typical of Haydn – the Freiburg group is up to the music's demands. Particularly impressive are the attractive colour and virtuosity of the horns in No. 8. All repeats (of developments and recapitulations as well as those of expositions) are observed. In short, for anyone interested in period-instrument accounts of these works, this release is recommended. Mortimer H. Frank

5 out of 5 stars Worth acquiring at any price.......2007-02-23

Some say Haydn's ingenuity is even greater than that of Mozart's or Beethoven's. When listening to this brilliantly played set, I find myself becoming a convert of the belief. Haydn experimented with a variety of musical tools in these works. Surprising twists and turns are abundant. You will hear chamber serenade, harpsichord run, or violin solo in the most unexpected spots. Instruments are sometimes played in very unconventional ways resulting in exotic sounds - similar to what Berlioz and Mahler did later. Structure is toyed with in many symphonies, especially in the early ones.

In Austro-Hungrarian Orchestra, Adam Fischer finds an all-in chef's toolkit needed to cook these delightful ingredients. The woodwinds not only sing but also coo and meow. Strings melt your heart to a puddle with their exquisite pianissimo. Horns are expressive yet stylish. The whole orchestra knows how to knock themselves out when the music calls for it. The overall timbre is unlike any other orchestra I've ever heard, period or conventional. It's bright, edgy and folksy at the same time. It sounds like a virtuosic chamber ensemble rather than an orchestra except in the big symphonies. I believe the closest thing to their sound is Vienna Philharmonic playing Johann Strauss waltzes. Throw in a hint of gypsy flavor then it would be even closer.

Because this is a massive 33-CD set, there are inevitably a few imperfections. In a handful of spots the strings are not perfectly together. Adding to this, some of the violins have very distinctive tones which don't blend well with others when the music gets energetic. As to the engineering, some of the symphonies recorded early in the cycle are captured with too much reverberation, especially some London symphonies which sound soft-edged. But let me assure you the vast majority of the 100 plus symphonies have been recorded with crystal-clear brilliance.

One may find more sophisticated and smooth playing in some conventional performances (Colin Davis and Jochum) or crisper articulations in some period recordings (Bruggen and Pinnock). But Fischer and his hand-picked orchestra deliver more character and expressiveness than in any Haydn performances I've ever heard. Harnoncourt comes close but Fischer's set has more smiles. And his orchestra has the devilish ability to accommodate any mood Haydn's score throws at them - whether it's charm, wit, panache, or pathos. Their playing in slow movements is simply inimitable.

This set will be the source of joy for many Haydn lovers whether they are beginners just opening up the treasure chest or seasoned collectors with many other Haydn CDs. According to others' opinions, it compares favorably to Dorati's box, the only other complete set which I have not heard.

One final point - I wrote the review without the consideration of the price. In other words, this set is worth acquiring at any price.

4 out of 5 stars It started in school... .......2006-02-26

One of my students found this recording because we were playing No. 20 in our orchestra class, and she wanted to hear it. Turns out to be quite a well-played and cleanly recorded cd, but to get to No. 20 one must also buy Nos. 1-19. It appears that this is one of a five-volume set of box sets comprising all of Papa Haydn's symphonic output. It's enjoyable, but I would have been happier if buying Nos. 15-20 had been an option.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection.......2000-03-29

This is the first volume in an 8 volume collection. You will have to wait until 10/2000 and 10/2001 for volumes 5 and 2 respectively. But it will be worth it! These discs are recent recordings and are full digital. The performances are very well done. I started my collection of Haydn symphonies here and will definitely finish out the set.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Damn Good.......2004-07-06

I received as a gift the box set of all four Hooked On Classics CD's. As an avid fan of classical music, I was quite shocked to hear DRUMS in the background! I didn't really know what the Hooked On Classics series was, so I didn't know what to expect. As such, I eventually got used to the percussion, and found that I liked the fourth CD the best of all of them. The drums are more tolerable, and the recording quality is much improved over the other volumes. The playing is superb; on par with any legitimate recording made by any professional orchestra. The selections are diverse, and the arrangements are refreshing. HOC 4 was my link to many of the full-length versions of the excerpts featured, and I especially like the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th tracks (the 8th track is simply an extended version of the 1st, which makes it a much better rendition). The harpsichord playing in the 7th track is outstanding, as are the arrangements for this track. The climax will give you chills. All in all, an excellent album. I give it four stars only because as a die-hard purist, I don't suppose Bach and Vivaldi and Scarlatti would be too happy if they were to hear percussion along with their music. It would be interesting to see what the tracks would sound like without this.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, specially the adagio........2004-01-28

I love this CD in particular, because it introduced me to various greatest hits of baroque. I used it to practice my music as a teenager. I recommed this to you, specially if you have kids, because the drum sounds, make it easier to listen to the new generations. I loved the Pachelbel, and the adagio part is Super Excellent.

2 out of 5 stars It's No Louis Clark & the Royal Philharmonic... But it's ok.......2003-12-07

Back in 81 when I got the original Hooked on Classics record as a gift (which I still have), I discovered the beauty and power of classical music in a different way. Now, classical music makes up 1/3 of my music library because of that compilation of classics (thanks to Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic).

So would I say this volume 4 has the same effect? I'd answer no, but I did like tracks 2 & 7.

2 out of 5 stars No So Great.......2003-10-29

Once again another pathetic attempt at recreating what Louis Clark did with the original Hooked on the Classics. He succeeded by getting many of us hooked to the classics...something this album probably can't and won't do.

5 out of 5 stars More Wonderful Wand.......2005-05-06

While I'm not currently buying Testament titles at the same rate I was a few years back, I simply could not pass up this one featuring the legendary conductor Gunter Wand. (The fact that I found it for $5 in a Boston used CD store might have contributed slightly to my decision.) This CD features Wand performing Schubert's 6th and 8th Symphonies (in stereo from 1962 and 1958 respectively) and Haydn's Piano Concerto in D (with Heinz Schroter in mono from 1956) with his beloved Gurzenich Orchestra of Cologne. Those familiar with my other Wand Testament reviews on Amazon, or those who know Wand's bio, will already know this, but popularity found Wand late in life. One of the reasons may be traced back to a career decision made in the early 1950s. Wand was given the opportunity by Walter Legge to join the great roster of conductors at EMI and make a few recordings, or record a larger body of work with the French subscription music club, Club Francaise du Disque. Wand, always one to put the music first, chose the latter, and as a result we have this beautiful archive of recordings, beginning to be lovingly reissued by Testament. And it is a "testament" to that company's dedication to classical music today that allows us to hear all these gems of the past -- thank you!
