Idil Biret made the world premiere recording of this unwieldy, tremendously difficult transcription in 1979. This digital remake reveals that her playing is more colorful and thoughtful, but more labored in detail. Until Todd Crow's staggering performance (long overdue for issue) comes out, Leslie Howard's on Hyperion is recommended by default. --Jed Distler

Classic Scary Music.......2007-01-10
If you're looking for classic haunted castle type scary music, this is a good CD.
Used this in a haunted maze in our basement, and it helped freak the kids out fairly well.
Classical and great.......2006-11-28
A must-have for your Halloween music collection. Different and strong, the music will definitely get you in the Halloween mood. I played it on my stereo while answering the door to trick-or-treaters. It made me feel "oh-so-spooky" and festive.

An excellent compilation of the darker side of classical music, although I would have preferred a different rendition of Toccata and Fugue in D (New York Philharmonic perhaps), it's still quite good.
But how could the series producer leave off Ravel's Pavane For a Dead Princess? It's preferable to Symphonie Fantastique - March to The Scaffold, plus Berlioz already makes an appearance with Dream of a Witches' Sabbath. If there was room, Verdi's Requiem would have been a nice addition too.
So I have to go with 4 stars only.
The Perfect Halloween-Themed Classical Album.......2005-10-17
What better way to celebrate Halloween than by throwing a party and popping this recording on the stereo. This is classical music with a Halloween theme. Conductors Eugene Ormandy and George Pretre (whom I would have never believed did this kind of stuff) conducts classical music with a dark and Gothic twist. The cover is attrative- a cartoon drawing of the Phantom of the Opera playing on his organ. The first track is Bach's Toccata and Fugue for organ in D minor. It is genuinely considered a Halloween piece, and has been associated with such films as Dracula. The malevolent sound of the Toccata (the opening chords) are especially memorable. Danse Macabre was Saint Saen's ode to Halloween and it is a devilish waltz for violin. Gounod's Funeral March of a Marionette became famous for the theme to Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky was used in Disney's Fantasia, in the last segment and is very frightening and brisk. Lisz's Mephisto Waltzes are piano pieces that evoke a wild frenzy but I find nothing dark about it. It is difficult music to play however. The music of Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique utilizes many horror themes. In the Romantic Era, Gothic lore spread and such figures as Mary Shelley and Bram Stroker would write novels of Gothic horror -Frankenstein and Dracula. In the Symphony Fantastique, a young man falls in love with an elusive woman. He imagines she is unfaithful to him and then has a disturbing dream in which she is a witch in a coven. Then he is marched to a scaffold and beheaded. The music is very compelling and dark. All the music here is great to listen to on Halloween and the conductors and orchestra play them well. A must have.
Spooky Classical Music That Is Great For Halloween Or Anytime Of The Year!.......2005-10-16
I love Classical music, it is one of my favorite styles of music and I also like Halloween and scary movies, etc, I bought this CD because I heard, In The Hall of the Mountain King, Night on Bald Mountain, Dance Macabre and Funeral March of a Marionette and I liked them. Dance Macabre was used in a season 4 episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer called Hush. Also Funeral March of a Marionette was used as the theme for Alfred Hitchock Presents. All of these pieces are great and I also liked Tocata & Fuge in D minor. This CD with it's spooky sounding classical music is great for playing on Halloween but can really be listened to anytime and not just on Halloween and I highly recommend it!

I own multiple recordings of most of the works on Georg Solti's Thunder & Lightning, but I always hold this collection as my reference. Not only with his beloved Chicago Symphony Orchestra, but several other world class ensembles, the Maestro shows his monumental interperative talents to make old warhorses sound as if we've never heard them before. He could inspire an orchestra to "open the heavens or open a flower" with his baton. His presence is missed, but his work is forever.

If you wish to relax using this CD set after work, you are buying the wrong album. But, if you MUST drive between one and six in the morning, this set, by repeating all just once, can keep you awake on the road, however boring it is. Trust me, TRUST SOLTI!

Solti shows here why he is one of the best interpreters of classical music. while conducting Wagner is his best work, here he shows that he can interpret well just about any composer. also, in this 2-disc set, there is a nice wide range of music, so for those who are just getting into classical music, this is a good place to start.

This collection is great fun. I can't imagine a better way to drive home from work on a Fri afternoon than listening to Solti's "Thunder and Lightning" LOUD on an excellent car stereo. Order and ENJOY!!:)

A wonderful collection of Solti's intensity and drive in this music. He is at his best here and how nice to hear a variety of orchestras. Good "sampler" for future purchases.

Perfect for Halloween!.......2007-01-04
We enjoyed broadcasting the tunes thru our mp3 player on Halloween night. THe trick or treaters and their parents really enjoyed the music
What, you call this scary music?.......2005-07-07
I'm familiar with most of the pieces found in this CD, and I can say I don't think they are frightening at all. They're great and highly enjoyable in their own right (the 'Danse Macabre' by Camille Saint-Saens is lovely dance music), but if one's intention is to bring together a collection of pieces of truly scary classical music, then this anthology hasn't done the job.
Here's a list of what I would consider TRULY TERRIFYING works of classical music:
~Ralph Vaughan Williams' 4th & 6th symphonies (especially the 2nd movement of each of them)
~Igor Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring'
~Gyorgy Ligeti's 'Atmospheres' and 'Lux Aeterna' (used in the film '2001')
~Almost anything by Bela Bartok (but especially his 'The Miraculous Mandarin')
If you want to be truly frightened, go for the said pieces!
Music Is Very Good, However................2004-08-14
The music on this CD is all very good, but as I play it, I don't really feel that "Bump in the Night" sensation throughout. Since it appears to be marketed for fun Halloween gatherings, I cannot honestly say that it will jumpstart the mood for the average party-goer. While "Funeral March For a Marionette" is extremely creepy and sets the mood (for those of you baby-boomers who don't recognize the title---this was the theme music to the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV series), other tunes kind of pull the plug on the momentum. Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" might ring Seasonal for classical music buffs, but I think your everyday Joe will picture helicopters soaring over Vietnam and the cry "I love the smell of napalm in the morning!"
FOUR STARS if you just want a nice sampling of bold classical music, and TWO STARS if you want it to go "Bump!" in the Night.
Good Classical type Halloween music anthology.......2004-07-14
While this CD might cover most of the standard "creepy classics", there are a few more it could have covered, but frankly, the only song on the whole thing I didn't care for was Ives "Halloween". Some people may think that completely discordant music is great, but I do NOT! Otherwise, everything else was a great selection, and very entertaining. Definitely worth having, esp. if you like classical music.
Good for Halloween Gatherings.......2003-09-25
If you're looking for a fun CD with spooky sounding music that reminds you of old Disney cartoons...I think that this CD was meant to be fun, NOT for the classical conisseur. It would be a nice CD for a Halloween gathering, or something similar, as background music.

Great music, great price........2000-08-08
If you like classical music, you should definitely get this set. Four CD's for no more than $14, and what good CD's they are!
It includes perennial favorites like "Pomp and Circumstance" and "The Barber of Seville," also a particularly beautiful rendition of the "Dance of the Red Flute." Of course, with a whole four discs, you'll find plenty of your own songs from this work to cherish.

Excellent historical recordings from the AGE of Living Stereo-the way recordings should have been done-the quality behind these reecordings, and the teamwork that was involved with these as well.. John Phieffer well deserved the credit due in his efforts in turning around RCA-VICTOR to an audiophile quality production.
A GREAT introduction to a legendary recording technology!.......1999-03-24
The time was right in the early 1950's when RCA tasked the mild-mannered newcomer, Jack Pfeiffer, to not only bridge the gap between corporate management and its roster of sometimes outrageously ill-tempered classical superstars, but also to develop a commercially-viable recording technology that would send a resounding shock wave throughout the industry. Working on information gained from previous stereo experiments of the 30's and 40's, Pfeiffer knew that he had to make stereo technology not only a practical medium returning optimum results in the studio, but also to get that technology transmitted from the studio to the long-playing record player in the home. This album provides wonderfully-recorded samples from the early 1950's and a booklet relating the search for attaining that goal. Interesting annecdotes abound about Reiner, Stokowski, Horowitz, and others, with many providing a chuckle. This album is a good investment to accompany whatever number of purchases you make of the RCA Living Stereo CD series.

Striking and richly played.......2006-09-07
Leslie Howard's 5th Volume in his "Complete Music for Solo Piano" enterprise is certainly one of the best recordings in the series. Some of these have never been recorded and most of them are hardly played at all. I must praise Mr. Howard enthusiastically for bringing such neglected but superior works to our ears.
Liszt's piano transcription of Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre" is a superlative effort, demonstrating not just Saint-Saens compositional genius, but Liszt's transcribing abilities of the highest degree. This piece played on piano evokes the same images from the orchestral symphonic poem: dancing skeletons, cold winds, and an almost impish atmosphere like something from a Mephisto Waltz. I actually prefer Arnaldo Cohen's superbly chilling interpretation on the Naxos label, but Howard is no slacker either.
Chopin's Op. 74, the seventeen polish songs are not well known at all. Liszt's "Six Chants Polonais" are therefore a blessing. I'm glad Liszt transcribed them to perhaps popularize them as individual piano pieces without voice. All of these are delightful pieces, typical of Chopin's lyricism. They sound remarkable on piano and I feel they translate even better through Liszt's fingers; I listened to the actual original songs and for some reason I always miss Liszt's transcriptions. For those unfamiliar with these, "The Maiden's Wish," "Spring," "My Joys" and of course the phenomenal "Homeward" are the musical rubies here. Howard plays with the perfect combination of refined touch, graceful tempo, and the flare of Chopin's fury when needed. Just listen to the "Homeward" piece: short and tempestuous, but it speaks volumes with Liszt's transcription and under Howard's fingers.
Half of this disc consists of Berlioz transcriptions and they were my main reason for buying this. I also think they out-class the Saint-Saens and Chopin transcriptions preceeding them. The "L'Idee Fixe" is a heart-wrenching repose of serenity, a piece actually *composed* by Liszt based off of Berlioz' 'Symphonie Fantastique.' The rest of the works featured on this disc are transcriptions of the highest caliber. Take the Overture from "Les Francs-Juges." What an incredible and colossal work of tremendous music. Under Liszt's pianistic achievement, you can some of the richest harmonies and sounds from the piano. Strap yourself in for an engrossing and heaven-storming 13 minutes. Following this is the Beethoven-like "Marche des Pelerins" from Berlioz' 'Harold en Italie.' Liszt's sensible transcription is a splendid showcase of the dynamics and tension that can be suspended in the midst of a relatively quiet piece. The entire work floats with a mysterious tranquillity and is certainly original music from Berlioz. "Valse des Sylphes" from the 'La Damnation de Faust' is an exquisite transcription with a more calm and nocturnal inspiration.
However, the subsequent and final transcription is an epic and grand finale to the wonderful CD. Music of the sublime, the dramatic, and the most pleasing harmonies can be found here. At times it whirls and speaks like the triumphant heroism and undeniable tension found in Beethoven's music. The first 4 or so minutes engage in the most beautiful music I've heard from Berlioz. Obviously Liszt does the music justice on the piano. Progressing into new worlds, the work clashes and drives itself through some rich harmonies and incredible virtuosic displays. At 16 minutes, the piece packs a punch (how's that alliteration?). Berlioz is truly a genius and a master with melodic music material (wow I'm on a roll). And I'm once again in awe at Liszt's astounding abilities. The way he transfers the orchestral effects, the layers of sound and the tones of the instruments to piano is mystifying and ultimately amazing. Also, I think his promotion of such music through his transcriptions is clear testament to how much he understood and could distinguish the masterpieces of his time.
Bottom line: With 59 or more recordings in Leslie Howard's Hyperion series of Liszt's music, this is surely ranking in the top 10. Berlioz' unbelievably original and captivating music is only enhanced and enthroned to a higher status with Liszt's outstanding transcriptions. Additionally, you also get a great interpretation (with so few out there) of the Chopin and Saint-Saens transcription(s). Highly Recommended!
Berlioz-Liszt and Howard: We couldn't wish for more.......2003-02-24
This fifth volume of 95-CD traversal featuring the complete piano music of Liszt finds Howard at his very best. A truly spectacular album, rightly awarded (1991) with the most prestigious Liszt Academy Grand Prix and a superb triumph for Howard's magisterial, incomparable pianism. What else: just go out and buy it !

The well known Franz Liszt's iron hammer style of playing has been for many listeners a virtue by itself; while for others has been the most powerful argument to demonstarte the majuscule difference between Chopin's poetry and the music considered as exhibition vehicle for the galleries.
But, between these two opposite tendencies, Liszt knew to harmonize and maintain the powerful expression at least in what cocerns with the whole Beethoven's cycle of Symphonies and the enigmatic Berlioz 's Symphonie Fantastique.
To preserve the spirit of the work is just by iotself a superb achievement, because among the annals of the musical story this enraptured composition and the way it was composed, not only nourished but flamed still more the febrile romantic spirit of the second half of the XIX Century.
Leslie Howard made the most towering and brilliant performance until this date of this notable and original Op.
His demoniac technique was under the service of the composer without excess of pyrotechcnics, theatrical grimaces or easy concessions.

"Transcription Fantastique"!.......1999-12-31
One of the defining masterworks of the symphony orchestra has to be Hector Berlioz' "Synphonie Fantastique" -- its sheer size, larger-than-life range of colorations and effects, and overwhelming emotions make it a work that could only have been written for a modern orchestra. Or maybe .... ? Enter Franz Liszt, the creator of the piano recital, the man described only half-facetiously by Tchaikovsky as the "Wizard of Weimar" ... and perhaps the only person who could transcribe and do justice to Berlioz' monumental work. Using his ten fingers, his uninhibited virtuosity and his uncanny ability to replicate the sound of an entire orchestra on a piano keyboard, Liszt more than does justice to his friend Berlioz in his amazing transcription of the "Symphonie Fantastique." For his part, Leslie Howard, in perhaps the most spectacular recording of his monumental 94-CD series of Liszt's complete piano compositions, gives an electrifying rendition of this work. Listeners, relax and enjoy ... and pianists, eat your hearts out!

Liszt's transcription of his buddy Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique is the reason to buy this CD. The rest ain't too shabby, either. Howard's performance is up to his usual high standards.
