Tchaikovsky: Manfred Symphony; The Tempest

Editorial Reviews

Easily the poorest major recording of this work currently available, Mikhail Pletnev's Manfred is shallow, lacking in tension and drama, and played with mechanical precision by a well-drilled, but otherwise undistinguished orchestra. The recording balances the brass and percussion far to the rear, further reducing the impact of what ought to be, by any measure, a shattering experience. A major disappointment by a fine pianist who is failing to make it as a conductor. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars This is it. Really!.......2007-05-18

Everything said by the reviewers below is true.

This is the greatest, most magnificent rendition of these pieces, ever. And I've heard dozens of interpretations on record, from Bernstein on down (or on up).

Nothing but color, excitement, electricity, philosophical wisdom, perfect musical judgment, and delicious playing is heard for about 4 hours on these 3 discs. Gorgeous. When the "1812" ended (the last track on the last disc), I felt tears coming into my eyes - a reaction more to the culmination of the whole set than to the roaring cannons. By the way, the explosions are vivid in this old warhorse.

Pletnev puts Muti to shame in the Manfred - and gives Jansons a cruel run for his money, and is better recorded than Jansons, to boot.

I love this profoundly. If you're looking for these pieces, this is the one. Really.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest achievements in the Tchaikovsky discography--Not to be missed.......2006-11-19

This is an inexpensive issue of phenomenal interpretations, electric when necessary, always on target.

Mikhail Pletnev began his career as a pianist, but when the USSR finally collapsed he took up conducting, piecing together his own orchestra of virtuoso players from the shambles. He made these recordings for Deutsche Grammaphon over a four year period; Manfred and the Tempest in 1993, the rest during two months in 1996. (I wonder what I was doing during those days.) The recorded sound is excellent--perhaps a little recessed here and there in Marche slave, but it is nothing to quibble over. The DG engineers do Pletnev proud, giving him the big Tchaikovsky sound without being terribly bombastic. And while we are on the topic of the bombastic...

Fatum is and excellent, neglected work. Many complain of its awkward form and bombastic nature, but I find little trace of this. Perhaps it is my love of Tchaikovsky's music in general that renders this music so delightful to me--perhaps it is Pletnev. He also does well in the other three little known works, namely The Voyevoda, The Festival Overture on the Danish National Anthem, and The Overture in F major (inaccurately described as Op. 67 on the case, that number belongs to Hamlet). Give these works time and they shall become nearly as much of a joy to listen to as Romeo and Juliet. The middle section of The Voyevoda is taken at a deliciously slow pace, allowing Tchaikovsky's beautiful writing to sing out in full. No complaints about the other two either.

Now to discuss the more popular works, many of which are still unjustly neglected. The Tempest comes to mind. It is my favorite piece of any sort that I have come across, period. Romeo and Juliet is sited in the Penguin Guide as one of the best in existence. The same guide states that the present recordings of Francesca da Rimini and Hamlet are very much in the same league as Stokowski's famous account. The introduction of Capriccio italien may be on the slow side, but Pletnev makes up for it with plenty of verve later on. 1812 Overture is also pleasantly executed.

Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony is simply not played enough. But here it is, coupled with a near complete program of Tchaikovsky Symphonic Poems at bargain price. The interpretation is nothing to scoff at either ("one of his finest Tchaikovsky records." Penguin Guide). I have heard complaints about the rubato, but do not see anything wrong with a few small tempo changes--and they are small. This account is among the best, about as excellent as Jansons' fabulous recording.

The packaging is good, the notes sparse, but if you want to know more about these works, the internet is more than willing to oblige.

Overall, this is indeed the best, a must for any admirer of the music or the performers (I am an admirer of both). If you desire but a single disc collection, Berstein's mid-price Sony recording is quite good, if you don't mind an analogue recording. Dorati's Double Decca is also fine, if a little lacking when compared to Berstein or Pletnev. I own another recording of all but two of the works in this trio set, and I prefer Pletnev in most every case. In other words, Pletnev is the way to go.

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Bargain.......2006-05-09

Here is the place to get your Tchaikovsky program-music fix. It's all here, from the well-known and well-loved to the obscure and rightly-so. Into that latter category falls "Fatum," one of the Russian's most fatuous and bombastic compositions but still worth a listen for the colors this master orchestrator can draw from the instruments. And DG's recording captures the all-important low end of the orchestral spectrum, including bass drum, thrillingly! Similarly, the "Manfred Symphony," though not as well known as it should be, is a marvelous piece of orchestration, from the delicate shimmer of the waterfall and its attendant Alpine fairy, which Tchaikovsky paints in what amounts to a scherzo, to the wild bacchanal of the finale, rounded out with one of his most beautifully serene passages. Riccardo Muti's white-hot reading of this work on EMI is my favorite, but Pletnev is not far behind, and he is accorded slightly finer sound.

Among the well-known and well-loved compositions, there are "Romeo and Juliet" and "Francesca da Rimini," both given bold and dramatic readings here. In "Francesca da Rimini," I find Pletnev's tendency to luxuriate over certain passages hinders the flow of the music; this seems a common failure among pianists turned conductor, such as Daniel Barenboim and Christoph Eschenbach. But the conclusion of the work is wildly exciting in Pletnev's reading, as is the battle music in "Romeo," and in this work Pletnev is refreshingly straightforward in his approach.

If you don't know "The Voyevoda," Pletnev's reading should make you an instant admirer. This odd, demonically driven piece is Tchaikovsky's last tone poem; note the use of the celesta, a brand-new instrument that Tchaikovsky introduced to the music world in his "Nutcracker" around the same time, 1890-91. "The Voyevoda" is another tragic love tale like "Romeo" and "Francesca," but it has a focus and singleness of purpose that are rare among Tchaikovsky's tone poems. "Hamlet," for instance, is one of those pieces that seem to ramble a bit--like "Fatum"--but Pletnev does as much as he can with it.

In those great old chestnuts "Marche Slav" and the "1812 Overture," Pletnev and his forces really deliver. True, these pieces almost play themselves, but the performances here sound especially idiomatic, full of Russian melancholy at the opening, Russian fire at the close.

The only omission I can think of is Tchaikovsky's early "The Storm," not to be confused with "The Tempest," which DG does include in this box set. If you want "The Storm," there is a nice recording from Naxos with Antoni Wit; it includes a sympathetic if slightly understated performance of the Fifth Symphony. But "The Tempest" is a more striking work, with a very dramatic opening and some thrilling tone painting in the pages that portray the eponymous tempest. Pletnev and his orchestra do it to a T. As with the "Manfred Symphony" and "The Voyevoda," I believe this is underrated Tchaikovsky and am glad Pletnev does it such justice.

DG provides big, sumptuous sound in all these works, really underscoring the drama inherent in Pletnev's readings. In fact, these are some of the best sounding discs I've heard of Tchaikovsky's music. So for lovers of Tchaikovsky's music and for sound buffs alike, this is indeed a great bargain.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Collection.......2004-11-06

The 3 CDs in this set are available separately from Deutsche Gramophone but the set is such a good buy that if you don't have any of the Pletnev/Russian National Orchestra series buy this set.

The performances come from 1994, 1997 and 1998. Each CD is generously filled (total timing: 237 minutes) with the third topping at 80:40. This is a fairly comprehensive survey of Tchaikovsky's shorter orchestral works. An exception is The Storm op. 76 (a work dating to 1864 but not performed and published until after the composer's death) but the omission is made up for with the obscure Overture in F major and the Festive Overture on the Danish National Anthem. The collection includes excellent performances of such staples as Romeo and Juliet, Francesca da Rimini, Marche slav, the 1812 Overture, Hamlet and Capriccio Italien.

Among the less familiar works there is an excellent recording of The Tempest and the works published following the death of Tchaikovsky: Fate op. 77 and Voyewoda op. 78. Fate has an interesting history. It was written in 1869, to no specific program, when Tchaikovsky was writing music under the tutelage of Milly Balakirev. The work was performed only twice, and when Balakirev made a critical comment Tchaikovsky withdrew the work and destroyed the score. Fate was assembled after his death and published.

The Manfred Symphony is also seldom performed and recorded and receives a great performance here. Mr. Pletnev takes a fast tempo at times. I think the conclusion of the first movement would have a more dramatic character if, like Andrew Litton and the Bournemouth, would have given more space to the music. Despite this small complaint, the symphony is beautifully played and the recording is nicely balanced, as are the other works.

This set is an excellent value, and even if you have some of the music recorded here you will want to have these superb performances. There is a booklet accompanying the set but it is only a brief survey of Tchaikovsky's music, as one would expect from a reduced price set.

4 out of 5 stars Unusually elegant and restrained Tchaikovsky.......2007-05-20

I imagine Keith Olbermann of MSNBC would refer to the Amazon reviewer as "well-known comedian David Hurwitz," whose broadside against Pletnev's Manfred Symphony prepared me for something special. And it is. First of all, contrary to Mr. Hurwitz, DG's engineering is demonstration quality, and the Russian Naitonal Orch. play with great skill and commitment.

As for Pletnev's interpretation, his style with Tchaikovsky is well known by now: elegant, unsentimental, perfectly voiced, but a trifle too studied and restrained. That mostly holds good here. This is one of the least bombastic Manfred Sym. readings to be heard. Tchaikovsky himself was doubtful about the work, and it's refreshing to hear it taken seriously with such meticulous respect for detail. However, a visceral reading this is not, so the listener should be prepared.

The Tempest, a 20-min. tone poem (or fantasy-overture to use the composer's peculiar term), needs all the help it can get, and I wish Pletnev hadn't been quite so understated with it, although the lyrical themes are beautifully phrased. Once again, however, the spectacular sonics from DG give the music great impact in the storm sections.

5 out of 5 stars Obra difícil de encontrar.......2007-05-13

4 out of 5 stars Another Fantasy-Overture from Tchaikovsky.......2006-02-12

Why Tchaikovsky's 'Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture' is so much more popular and often performed than the equally exciting and more mature 'The Tempest Fantasy-Overture' is a question anyone who has the opportunity of hearing the latter work will ask. Perhaps audiences are more receptive to the well-known story of the star-crossed lovers than they are to the mysteries and magic of Prospero's island. Whatever the reason this wonderful work for large orchestra composed in 1873 (Romeo and Juliet was composed in 1869) is full of all of the best of Tchaikovsky's brilliant orchestration and passionate love themes.

Concentrating on the sea as the main motif, moodily evoked through tremulous lower string rumbling against the massed brass choirs, Tchaikovsky weaves this recurring thread through the work, alluding to the main characters (Prospero, Ariel, Caliban) and then gives full throated passion to the love theme that marks Ferdinand and Miranda. It is gorgeous writing and Mikhail Pletnev leads his Russian National Orchestra through the complexities without losing sight of the underlying passion so much a part of Tchaikovsky's writing.

Accompanying 'The Tempest' is a performance of the Manfred Symphony which is quite good: this listener has never felt that this work was one of Tchaikovsky's finest, so enthusiasm is hard to garner. Pletnev knows the work, feels the work (it is also a piece written for piano 4 hands which may explain the pianist Pletnev's affinity!).

At a recent evening with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Tchaikovsky's 'The Tempest Fantasy Overture' opened a concert conducted by British pianist/composer/conductor Thomas Adès. In one of the more intelligent and inspired programming concepts, the Tchaikovsky was followed by the US premiere of Adès' Violin Concerto (a miraculous work) and after intermission the second part of the evening opened with Sibelius' Suite No. 2 from 'The Tempest' which then was followed by Thomas Adès own reduction of excerpts from his 2004 opera 'The Tempest'. It was an evening of wild magic and seaworthy music, one that demonstrates how thoughtful programming can illuminate each work. By the way, watch closely for a recording of the Adès' Tempest as it is one of the most successfully composed operas in years! Recommended. Grady Harp, February 06

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound overall.......2005-01-19

What's wrong with D. Hurwitz? Just listen to very end of 1st movement and you not only get good loud cymbal crash, but even the gong is quite clear in a HUGE tutti. The brass (particularly the high horns) come through brilliantly -- LOTS of drama! So a superb over-the-top ending to 1st movement.

Horns are consistenly clear throughout. Excellent presence: strings close and woodwind really clear (great in 2nd movement).

Overall, I find it an EXCELLENT recording.

Did DH review the wrong disc???

5 out of 5 stars Full-Blooded Performances.......2004-11-02

Pletnev's version of the Manfred Symphony has been heavily criticized by several reviewers. Having heard a few recordings of this work I think that Pletnev's is a refreshing reading of the music. The inner movements could not be played more beautifully than the Russian National Symphony. The outer movements are well performed and do not lack drama and lyricism. My only complaint is that Mr. Pletnev takes the final bars of the first movement faster than I have heard and this lessens the tension of the music. I prefer Andrew Litton and the Bournmouth for their slower tempo at this point, which heightens the drama of the music. Mr. Pletnev's version has far better clarity than the Litton version (on Virgin). Altogether, Pletnev's version of Manfred is excellent and well-judged. The Tempest is also an excellent account of this dificult piece with excellent tempos and superb playing. I recommend this recording without hesitation.

I strongly disagree with the comments by the Amazon reviewer who is very disparaging of Mr. Pletnev's abilities as a conductor. I have had the privilege of attending concerts given by the Russian National and can vouch for their excellence, which is largely due to Mkhail Pletnev. The catalogue is full of marvelous recordings by this conductor and orchestra. Recordings like Sergei Prokofiev's Cinderella have set a standard that few orchestras can match.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at a tortured genius.......2002-08-21

Naxos continues to do a wonderful job with its "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, one of Chopin and then two more, Liszt and Beethoven. he latter are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, and a discography. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.

Now we have two more entries in this amazing series, again written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann: "Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky" (8.558036-39) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 5 min. and "Johann Sebastian Bach" (8.558051-54) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 34 minutes. (Please see my comments on the Bach set on its webpage.)

Was there ever a sadder composer than Tchaikovsky? Siepmann practically introduces us to the child in his cradle and covers his 53 or so years of torment over his music, his sexuality, his impossibly hopeless marriage his strange relationship with Mme von Meck, and above all his music.

To make the recording more vivid, the producers have assigned professional actors the roles of the composer himself (Malcolm Sinclair), the women in his life (Karen Archer and Teresa Gallagher) and the men (Stephen Thorne and David Timson). There are many music examples (drawn, of course, from Naxos recordings), some of them considerably longer than necessary. For example, the "Sugar Plum Fairy" is heard at length to represent all of the "Nutcracker" score when several shorter samplings would have served the purpose better. But this has been true for the entire series, and perhaps the producers will rethink this aspect.

5 out of 5 stars A Rave for Definitive Tchaikovsky Performances by Toscanini.......1998-09-17

The 1,000 word limit imposed here for reviews easily could be surpassed if this essential item in the Toscanini broadcast canon were truly analyzed. For this release contains readings which are in almost every way superior in concentration, dramatic sweep, and coherence to the commercially- released recording sessions by Toscanini.

MANFRED SYMPHONY: Though the 1949 commercial taping on RCA / BMG Toscanini Collection CD has fantastic, crisp, and powerful (though compressed) sound, and this 1940 aircheck has little energy above the region of 5 kHz, nevertheless this earlier of Toscanini's several NBC productions of the piece is the more powerful and sustained of the two available readings. It must be noted that the conductor considerably cuts the score, and makes changes that are at odds with his "purist" reputation; yet they are not nearly as noticeable as the prunings and re-orchestrations of, say, Stokowski. This recording preserves a truly emotionally overwhelming experience!

PATHETIQUE SYMPHONY: Though I have a fondness for the slow, grave, and valedictory performance from 1954 (with its embarrassing first-movement ensemble lapse), this 1941 live performance, recorded in the rich ambience of Carnegie Hall, is finer in every way, benefitting from its greater drive and intensity, and a total lack of any trace of bathos. The commercial 1947 78- rpm performance is much more inhibited than this reading.

TEMPEST: This rarely played Tchaikovsky tone poem was done by the NBC Symphony under Stokowski in 1943 in a performance which exhibited MUCH more color and emotion; perhaps Toscanini played it the following season for some specific reason to point up the differences between his approach and Stokowski's (who was on the "outs" at NBC due to his adventuresome repertoire choices, including Schoenberg!) The Toscanini reading, though exciting when encountered on its own, must be admitted to be inferior to the (unreleased) Stokowski broadcast. Here, under the Italian Maestro, some of the repetitious bombast is more evident than as interpreted by Stokowski. The sound is quite good for the period.

PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1: This is a fascinating alternative to the two commercially- issued "approved" recordings from 1941 and 1943. Here in this 1941 broadcast, Horowitz catches fire and plays with more spontaneity than in his commercial 78 with Toscanini: it is a hair- raising experience!

VOYEVODA: This piece is the overture to an early Tchaikovsky opera, his Opus 3, and NOT the late tone poem also called "The Voyevoda", op. 78. The overture has been rarely recorded (there IS a version available on Vox Box CD) so this Toscanini performance is really quite rare: the conductor is not said to have cared for many of the composer's works, though he continually advocated the Sixth Symphony, Nutcracker, and First Piano Concerto. Why did the Maestro play this early, fustian piece? One cannot fathom the reason. The 1941 Carnegie Hall live performance is at the very least, powerful and strongly projected. It is amusing to note that the competitive issue on Relief CD has provided the documentation NOT for the correct overture, op. 3, but for the op. 78 tone poem: the annotator for the CD apparently never heard the recording, or did not know too much about Tchaikovsky's works! This is a specialty item for the "Compleat Toscanini Collector" rather than a more universally desirable item.

As usual, Music & Arts provides extensive and valuable documentation. We have encouraged them to stick with TRUE single channel mono for their Toscanini issues, and here they have done so, offering honest, "in house" original RCA sound. Do not miss this release; be sure to get it and NOT a cheezy ripoff bootleg with faked audio reproduction.
