Violins, harpsichords, basso continuo, what can I say.
Vivaldi ROCKS ! ! ! !
Excellent selection of his music and as usual flawlessly performed by the english consort.

4 out of 5 stars A Little More Vivaldi Please.......2003-12-28

This budget-priced, slim paper-sleeved box set of various Vivaldi Concertos on the DG/Archiv label is quite excellent. Trevor Pinnock, directing from the harpsichord and organ, leads the English Concert (an all-star cast including Roy Goodman and Simon Standage, both of whom have graduated to the podium in recent years) in digital recordings from the late 80s. Since the track information is not abundantly clear above, allow me to mention that the first two discs of this set feature various Concertos, discs 3 & 4 contain the complete "L'estro amonico" op. 3, and CD5 six Flute Concertos op. 10. While I have never been a big fan of period-instrument recordings, there is nothing I can complain about here. The performances are warm, spirited, and thoroughly engaging, and certainly not academic. In fact, my only complaint is that there is not more to listen to. I popped this set in my 5-disc changer over the Holidays, and was disappointed to find it end so soon, being that four of the five CDs log in at the mid-50 minute mark and one only at a whopping 45:08. By my calculations, there is easily room for an additional two hours of material here! Alas, it is the only problem with an otherwise stellar set.

5 out of 5 stars The Value Far Exceeds the Cost.......2005-06-28

Not only does this 2-CD set present a great set of pieces by Mozart, but the renditions given are among the best anywhere. Much good has been said about the performances of the clarinet and horn concertos, and rightly so. I must, however, being a flute player, comment on William Bennett's wonderful G Major concerto: you would be hard-pressed to find a more songful and intense recording. The bassoon concerto is the best I've heard, as is the oboe concerto. The horn concertos, though thoroughly enjoyable, are bested by James Sommerville. I would also recommend you compare the clarinet concerto here with Bohm's on DG, which is transcendent.

5 out of 5 stars Value Packed Concerto Set.......2002-01-19

Outstanding value from this two-CD set. Highlighting this solid recording is a marvelous clarinet performance by de Peyer backed solidly by the London Symphony and what could be the best of the horn renderings of Mozart's Concertos by Tuckwell again with the London Symphony. The balance and mood here by their interpretation is excellent, with the strength and toning by de Peyer and Tuckwell superb.

These are ably supplemented by very able renditions of the oboe and bassoon concertos respectively by Mack and McGill with the Cleveland Orchestra.

One will not go astray by having this set in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Set of Concertos.......2001-03-19

This is a marvelous set of mozart's wind concertos. De Peyer is an incredible musician who executes the clarinet concerto with sheer brilliance. Elegant and refined, this is the only recording of this concerto you'll ever need. The flute and bassoon concertos are remarkable as well. John Mack is a wonderful player who shapes the most beautiful phrases in the oboe concerto, and puts a touch of elegance on every note he plays. Tuckwell is a notoriously excellent musician, and his interpretation of the horn concertos are certainly 1st-rate, with an accompaniment to match. These CD's are certainly an asset to any Mozart-lover.

5 out of 5 stars Fine performances with superb accompaniments........2000-09-07

Both Barry Tuckwell on horn and Gervais de Peyer on clarinet are fine soloists who play their respective concertos beautifully. However, it is the suberb accompaniments by Peter Maag -- an extremely gifted Mozart conductor -- which provide the polish which makes this a 5-star set.

5 out of 5 stars Great de Peyers and Tuckwell performances.......2000-04-04

The clarinet concerto played by de Peyer is undoubtedly the best recorded performance of this great concerto. The sound is absolutely beautiful and the interpretation is retrained but elegant to the extreme. The orchestra under Maag played precisely and stylishly. In spite of the age of this recording, the sonic quality is very fine. Tuckwell's performance is as fantastic as one would expect from the all time greatest horn player.

Another installment in Philips's Set Your Life to Music series (which has included Mozart for Your Mind, Baroque at Bathtime, and Rachmaninoff for Romance, among others), Vivaldi for Valentines is loosely built around the aura of romance that Venice continues to evoke. Vivaldi captured it for all time in his music, inspired by the often melancholy beauty of his native city, one that has been known through the ages as La Serenissima. Along with such ultrafamiliar pieces as the "Winter" largo movement from The Four Seasons (in which the violin sighs a rapturous melody against sounds imitating a crackling, cozy fire) and the Largo of the Guitar Concerto in D--Vivaldi's slow movements, with all their gentle dreaminess, being given the limelight in this compilation--are many gems you've likely not heard before. The list of performers and approaches is too expansive even to mention but predominantly features performances by I Musici. It's hard to believe that Vivaldi's music, having sunk into oblivion, resurfaced again only a few decades ago. This is a pleasant compilation that makes a perfect entrée if you'd like to learn more about classical music--and Vivaldi in particular--than The Four Season. And, as for setting a romantic mood, this will give your mojo all the help it needs. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars More of Vivaldi's great music........2001-08-24

When it comes to Vivaldi's works, the majority of people usually tend to associate him solely with composing the Four Seasons. However, this particular cd will introduce classical music lovers to other music that he composed for various stringed instruments, including the violin and cello. It does include a section from Winter of the Four Seasons, but the rest is other music that some may not be too familiar with. For a low price, you'll be getting a great selection of music.

5 out of 5 stars Just great!.......2000-07-10

I don't really know a lot about classical music even though I listen to a lot of it. All I can say is that every piece on this collection evokes a tremendous amount of peace and happy emotion. I listen to it in my office, and that in combination with my new fountain.... better than Prozac. My favorite piece is "Concerto for Guitar in D major: Largo" (sample #2 above). Highly recommend!

Almost everyone knows Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". If you love that gorgeous piece of music, than I say your next purchase should be this! It is a gorgeous collecton of string quartets along with flutes and very impressive classical guitar. I put it on whenever I need to be taken away from this world, or when I need some artistic inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Double Reed showcase--Strauss, Mozart, Weber.......2006-03-20

This CD from Sony combines some of the finest recordings of these pieces I have ever heard. These pieces are all at the top of the repertoire for their respective instruments and played by the world's best performers.

The two Mozart concertos here both receive fine interpretations by the Philadelphia Orchestra with Eugene Ormandy conducting his principal musicians, oboist John deLancie and Bernard Garfield. If the orchestra at times sounds a bit heavy, and the tempi a touch slow--because we are now accustomed to hearing these pieces by chamber orchestras and period instruments ensembles--this will be made up for by the exuberant and precise execution of one of the best orchestra-conductor relationships ever. deLancie, carrying the torch from his predecessor Marcel Tabuteau, proves that he was certainly one of the leaders in a generation of great oboists which include John Mack, Ray Still, Harold Gomberg. deLancie's phrasing is beautiful, his sound warm, and gives an all-around artful performance, especially in the delightful closing rondo movement. Garfield also shines in Mozart, with a beautiful rich bassoon tone that is always singing, both in the low and high registers of his instrument. Garfield and the Philadelphia Orchestra also do a wonderful job with Weber's Hugarian Rondo. Garfiled gives great character to some of the variations, always with great technique. It is hard to say enough praises about these two stellar soloists caught in classic recordings from the early 1960s.

But there is more... The author of the liner notes writes that Strauss' concerto is a "liquid, constantly developing essay into the very nature of the oboe itself, as well as the orchestra which surrounded it... they play 'into' one another, the oboe dovetailing here and there into the orchestral texture, which itself emerges and submerges according to the musical demands of the journey. It is as if throughout all of his previous orchestral writing... Strauss had been preparing to write this work, polishing his knowledge of and challenging each instrument to its maximum capacity." I don't think there is a better description of this piece, and that is exactly the way the performers do it. Neil Black hands over a spectacular version of this devilishly difficult Strauss Oboe Concerto backed by the English Chamber Orchestra and Daniel Barenboim. Black's playing is so smooth and beautiful that you will not notice the taxing long phrasing and awkward breathing patterns required of the oboist. Barenboim is no doubt intimately familiar with Strauss' large orchestra and operatic works from his conducting career, and he leads one of the world's finest chamber orchestras in an intimate and colorful orchestra accompaniment. With Barenboim's genius baton, the orchestra interacts intimately with the soloist the way Strauss intended, and the recording balance is perfect. In my opinion, the over all soloist-orchestral execution in this recording of the Strauss Concerto is only matched by Ray Still's recording, whose recording on Virgin is also available at a great price.

While I know that there are other great recordings of these pieces (I am a double reed player) this album is really a special treat--so much great double reed playing on one CD! With 74 minutes of music at $6.98, this CD is also a tough deal to beat. It should definitely be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars LEGENDARY PERFORMANCES.......2002-07-09

These recordings are some of the finest examples of double reed performance bar none. You have recordings by some of Americas greatest double reed performers and one of the truest examples of the "Philadelphia" school of wind playing. The significance in this is that the American School of oboe performance comes from the Philadelphia school through Marcel Tabuteau, who was John de Lancie's teacher. When you hear de Lancie's unsurpassed and flawless artistry, you hear Tabuteau. Bernard Garfield is a true living ledgend and in my opinion there is no better recording of the Mozart Concerto or the Hungarian Rondo than his. His sound is pure, sweet, and without equal. His level of music making is such that you begin to forget that it is a bassoon that is singing to you and that it is something else all together transcending that. I would strongly urge all oboists, bassoonists, and lovers of fine music making, to purchase this CD. These recordings stand the test of time.

3 out of 5 stars Decent but disappointing.......2001-08-17

John de Lancie's playing has varied a lot over time, and his sound was constantly evolving over his career. This recording early in his career with the Philadelphia Orchestra of the Mozart Oboe Concerto is fairly poor. His tone is nasal and weak and his performance gives very little life to this sparkling concerto. Phrasing and dynamics are practically nonexistent. His tempos are also too slow in the 1st and 3rd mvmts. I prefer Lothar Koch's version with the Berlin Phil over this one.
Neil Black's recording of the Strauss Concerto is better, but has some obvious problems. His tempo and phrasing seem agitated at times, and he seems unsure in the high range and difficult passages. However, this is probably the most difficult piece in the oboe repetoire, and Black pulls together a decent performance. If you want to hear how this piece was meant to sound, I recommend the Alex Klein recording with CSO. The Bassoon pieces are both well done by Garfield. Overall decent, but disappointing. There are much better recordings out there, especially for the Mozart oboe concerto. Nonetheless, I have yet to find a fully satisfying recording of the Mozart. Two stars for de Lancie's performance and three for the rest.

5 out of 5 stars The Red Priest how he should be played.......2000-12-03

I was given this CD many years ago, and to this day it has remained my favourite. Vivaldi's beautiful simplistic melodies in the largo movements and awe-inspiring scalar variations make his music a delight to listen to. Simon Standage's energetic performance of the famous allegro from spring, and the beautifully ornamented largo from the same concerto are a terrific opening. His amazing precision while playing the extremely difficult tempo impestuoso dell'estade (presto from summer), and the charming third movement from autumn are all played as I have never heard before. Perhaps the best of all is the largo from winter, which is played so beautifully, with amazing accuracy on the trills, and few ornaments to keep it sweetly simplistic are all true signs of genius.

The flute concerto is a great choice to contrast the preceeding trumpet concerto's strength with the delicacy of a bird - a bullfinch if you please. Not to confuse delicacy with weakness, however. This piece is strong in its own right, within the arpeggios in the first movement and the mournful calling in the second are very powerful, but fightly and bird-like. The tone quality of the flautist, and the composer's own ability to mimic nature with a musical instrument make this piece a pleasure to listen to.

The mandolin and lute concerti are beautiful as well, and they show Vivaldi's versatility on all instruments perfectly. They sound as if they are written by a guitarist, not a violin virtuoso. Listening to this you feel as if you were being serenaded by a Venetian gondelier. The largos are soothing and relaxing, and the allegros are bright and energetic.

This recording does the Red Priest the full justice he deserves. His tremendous talent comes through, and complimented by the talent of the performers make this CD a worthy addition to anyone's collection, and I would highly reccomend you buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid selection, great performances.......2000-05-29

An excellent CD. Under the baton of Trevor Pinnock, the English Concert gives the best performance of the Four Seasons that I have ever heard...so alive and vibrant, the violins really "sing"! You only get part of this stunning Four Seasons and the opening of the Gloria(great singing and perfect tempo), but all of the other selections are the complete work. And what a glorious selection it is. I love the two guitar concertos(the Lute Concerto is played on guitar here). This CD really brings together one of the leading period instruments ensembles to perform Vivaldi(The English Concert) and one of the leading modern instruments ensembles(Academy of St. Martin in the Fields), so that you get both perspectives on this music. The "Bullfinch" Flute Concerto(played on "transverse" flute here) is particularly charming. A magnificent album. Go Mad About Vivaldi!

    1 out of 5 stars Atrocious!.......2007-07-17

Kudos to anybody with the hutzpah to attempt recording all of the Vivaldi bassoon concerti. As a bassoonist myself, it bothers me to no end how we tend to limit our repertoire to the Mozart concerto, the von Weber concerto, and maybe four out of the thirty-eight Vivaldi concerti.

But you need a whole lot more than hutzpah to make a recording that's worth listening to. Daniel Smith's tone is fat, buzzy, honky, and blatty, and he always sounds flat. The number of technical flaws is diabolical. The style isn't even close to appropriate. Perfection is one thing; Daniel Smith has yet to achieve basic professional competence on his instrument. I was a better bassoonist in my third year of playing. Shame on Daniel Smith for perpetuating the stereotype of the clumsy belching bedpost, and shame on the ignorant public for holding bassoonists to such a low standard.

Fortunately, this is no longer the only recording of all thirty-eight Vivaldi bassoon concerti. A Hunagarian named Tamas Bencoks has produced a fine, five-disc series on the Naxos label. His tone is a bit thick for my tastes, but his performances are elegant and clean.

If you've already purchased Daniel Smith's collection, then my advice is to pick a random CD from one of these fine bassoonists and purge his deplorable playing from your minds: Dag Jensen, Klaus Thunemann, Milan Turkovic, Knut Sönstevold, Kim Walker, Barrick Stees, Frank Morelli, Sigyn Birkeland, Christopher Millard, Masahito Tanaka, Bernard Garfield.

    1 out of 5 stars Popsicle sticks........2006-12-10

I read in the program notes that this in the only CD set of the complete Vivaldi Bassoon Concertos. Too bad. I am happy the I bought this box set at a closeout sale and did not pay full price.
What an ugly tone. It sounds like he made his bassoon reed out of popsicle sticks. Yech!!!
I am an amateur bassoonist, I play on synthetic reeds, and I swear that I can get a better sound out of the instrument than Mr. Smith does.

1/19/2007: I am modifying my comments slightly because the performances with the English Chamber Orchestra (ECO) do not sound as bad as the performances with the Zagreb Soloist. I can listen to the performances with the ECO without the desire to poke a pencil in my eardrums. Still one star.

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?.......2006-03-23

Daniel Smith exhibits a standard of bassoon playing that is currently surpassed by a rather large number of high school bassoonists; that he has the financial ability to continue making recordings in no way indicates that he should do so. His intonation is, as another reviewer aptly put it, wretched; his technique is sufficiently poor to completely distract from whatever rare musical idea he may exhibit. A great number of the diminuendi, crescendi, and other dynamic contrasts are clearly digitally added. Rhythm is sloppy and often distorted according to the technical difficulty of the passage. His sound is, in a word, unfortunate. Fortunately, the accompaniment is, in general, well-played.

If you enjoy the Vivaldi bassoon concertos, please check out Thunemann's excellent recording of them; other fine bassoonists far more worthy of the additional income include, in no particular order, Richard Ranti, David McGill, Dag Jensen, Kristin Wolfe Jensen, Arthur Weisberg, Bernard Garfield, Judith LeClair, Nadina Mackie Jackson and the entire Caliban Bassoon Quartet, Frank Morelli, Barrick Stees, Leonard Sharrow, Sol Schoenbach, George Sakakeeny, Christopher Millard, Pascal Gallois, Paolo Carlini, Milan Turkovic, Masahito Tanaka, Paul Hanson and Michael Rabinowitz for the jazz-inclined, Laurent Lefevre, Stephane Levesque, William Ludwig, Valeri Popov, Kathleen Reynolds, Christopher Weait, Knut Sonstevold, and Robert Williams.

    5 out of 5 stars Marvellous!.......2005-05-29

Daniel Smith plays a modern bassoon with the English Chamber Orchestra led by Philip Ledger or the Zagreb Soloists led by Tonko Ninic, in a monumental recording of all thirty-seven bassoon concertos by Antonio Vivaldi (1675-1741).

"This is a marvellous series... Highly recommended" (Fanfare).

    1 out of 5 stars Hideous.......2005-01-15

Don't you dare buy this CD- unless you are looking for an example of what a bassoon should never sound like. Tone is just disgusting and articulations are mud throughout the entire collection. Seeing a picture of Smith, and now hearing some of his music, Harry Potter's Gilderoy Lockhart comes to my mind.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good music for an unlikely instrument.......2002-05-01

Here's a disc that isn't likely to jump out at you and say "I need to be bought." Concerti for bassoon are rather rare, especially if you throw out Vivaldi's efforts in the genre. Mozart and Weber's early efforts are about all that bassonist have to work with. The lowest of the woodwinds just isn't the [] of soloists imaginable. (In fact, it's hard to think of a less [] regular instrument!!)

That all said, this disc makes a good case for a reappraisal of the bassoon's solo possibilities, particularly given the colorful and soulful playing of Graham Savage. Not everything here is profound, but all four concerti are quality music.

Pride of place goes to Eric Fogg's D Major concerto of 1931. This is incredibly beautiful which digs a lot deeper than one would expect. Fogg eschews the idea of the basson as either a grumpy curmudgeon or a silly clown. Instead, he lets the instrument sing, particularly in the lamenting slow movement. This is a piece all bassoonists should know.

The second best piece here is Peter Hope's Concertino, written in 2000. It opens mysteriously with a melody very reminiscent of the score from "Lord of the Rings." In fact, this piece is redolent in memorable themes, from the bluesy slow movement to the bouncy finale. Hope keeps threatening to veer into Holywood kitsch or popular music, but he never quite slips into banality. Instead, he produces a piece that is a lot of fun.

The Addison and Butterworth pieces are somewhat less engaging but are certainly listenable and pleasant. In fact, there isn't a single harsh sound on this disk even though everything is clearly of the 20th century.

Also missing is much of the Vaughan Williams pastorale school that one might expect to find in this type of music. This is a bonus because 75+ minutes of pastorale musings could make one run to turn off the player.

Instead, I found this a quite charming and attractive disc. If the bassoon intrigues you as a soloist, give this mid-priced disc a try. I think you'll find that the grumpy curmudgeon of the orchestra is a more engaging solist than you might think.
