Copland: Music for the Theater; Concerto for Piano & Orchestra
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This important Copland collection includes at least two indispensable items. Copland was an incomparable player of his own music, and his performance of the Piano Concerto has more bounce and jazz in it than any other I've heard. And Connotations, one of Copland's late, adventurous works, is still very seldom heard. Just because it doesn't sound like Appalachian Spring doesn't mean it isn't great Copland. Music for the Theatre is another under-appreciated work. Of course, Bernstein's conducting in all this music is completely sympathetic. The version of El Sálon México is Leonard Bernstein's brash 1951 mono recording, never on CD before. --Leslie Gerber

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20
If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.
The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.
I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

Musical hybrids are always a dicey venture, running the risk of the whole's being less than the sum of the parts. Discussing the incorporation of jazz in classical music (or vice versa) can involve a quagmire of definitions. Instead, it is best to judge the works individually on their musical merits. All those represented here succeed to a greater or lesser degree. This disc opens with Gershwin's Manhattan anthem, Rhapsody in Blue, among the first to mix the two genres and yet to be bettered for seamlessness. Conductor Bernstein's love and understanding of the jazz idiom imbues works by Milhaud (La Création du monde) and Copland ("Burlesque" from Music for the Theatre [sic]) with the requisite swing to make their jazz influences ring true. But it is composer Bernstein (Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs for Solo Clarinet and Jazz Ensemble, West Side Story) who blends the two genres into a brew that is less noble experiment and more ecstatic experience. Recommended. --Michael RossCustomer Reviews:
