Album Description
This CD was recorded entirely in England by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Henry Wood Hall, London and the Watford Coliseum, Watford, England. The Engineer was Tony Faulkner and the Producer was Paul Francis Witt. Great efforts were taken to make sure this CD is of only the finest recording and performance quality. THE STATUE: Two lovers lives are split by the rage of a Sorceress. He turned to stone and she left to grieve. This is the premise of Charles Fernandez' ballet, "THE STATUE". having influences from Francaix to Prokofiev, you will make the journey with them to find out whether these soulmates can find a way to be reunited.
Soulmate Found - For anyone who has found a love they thought they'd lost forever.
Soldiers Farewell - A tribute to all who have died in service to our country
Processional and Recessional - All you could ask out of an English Processional and Recessional.
Amazing Grace (Sermon, Pre-Hymn and Hymn) - You should find this southern/jazz version of Amazing Grace for Bassoon and Strings an enjoyable diversion, and unlike anything you've heard.

Even their harshest critics can't accuse Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops of not trying to have fun. On The Latin Album, they tackle a repertoire that includes big-band favorites and compositions from Piazzolla, Perez Prado, and Aaron Copland (in the form of El Salon México). These are mostly dance tunes, filled with crashing percussion, Latin rhythms, and familiar melodies. To their credit, the Boston Pops get this fiesta right about half the time--opening with Alberto Ginastera's "Malambo," they set a furious, rollicking mood that's heavy on the percussion. They shine on Jacob Gade's "Jalousie" (an early hit for Lockhart predecessor Arthur Fiedler) and on the more atmospheric "Mi Cambio" by César Villalobos. Unfortunately, their arrangement of Piazzolla's "Oblivion" is about as subtle as the music found in soap operas (and about as exciting) and "Perfidia" is a disappointment, "smooth" but hardly sultry. Still, the Pops know how to play their brassy, rhythmic showpieces, and the recorded sound here is excellent. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Good background music, but a little tame for latin.......2002-08-19
I expected a little more action. I tend to think of mariachi and I got village pan pipes.
Don't Bother!.......2002-04-15
I bought this CD at a stoop sale for one dollar, and then sold it at a stoop sale for a dollar or two. I am very glad that I did not pay full price (or even half price) for it. I did not think it was a bad CD, but a bland CD. Every track on it I have heard performed better elsewhere. They are like Muzak versions of great Latin works.
A mood-lifter!.......2001-03-29
Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops, and the guest artists have a hit in this one! I can almost forget the snow outside when I listen to it. I loved "Jalousie!" And Mariachi Cobre stands out on "Granada" and "Son de la Negra." Five star tracks, both of them, with Steve Carrillo's great vocal work on "Granada" and the spirited interchange between the Pops and Mariachi Cobre's brass sections in "Son de la Negra." Purists may object to the combination of Latin music and an orchestra, but I think it's a treat!
A great CD from the Pops.......2001-02-07
The Boston Pops due a great job on this CD. I really like Batuque. If you are looking for a great CD that will really make you dance this is the one.
I agree with the music fan from Mexico.......2001-01-03
Where's the authentic Mariachi CDs? Let's have some of the real stuff! Anyone know where I can find some? LibbyBuckland@email.msn.com

Customer Reviews:
SIMPLY CHARMING.......2003-12-22
It's difficult not to wax enthusiastic about the melodic and magical works of contemporary composer, Charles Fernandez, on his first CD outing for Trone Music. Joining the ranks of modernists whose music still rebounds with undeniable and gratifying lyricism, Fernandez stands easily and persuasively.
Most impressive is the nearly thirty-six minute balletic dance suite, "The Statue," commissioned by The Bakersfield Musica da Camera (California), obviously for The Bakersfield Civic Dance Company, and performed in 1996. It is here expanded by the composer, delightfully so, from chamber ensemble to full orchestra and with added musical selections that round out the composition. Rich in texture, elegiac nuance and wit, the work has an instantaneous and enduring romantic appeal. Furthering the programmatic efforts of such composers as Stenhammar (Serenade, Op. 31), Finzi (Suite from "Love's Labours Lost"), Prokofiev ("A Winter Campfire") and Stravinsky ("The Fairy's Kiss"), Fernandez holds his own more than adequately with music that continues already familiar and popular precedents. This, in itself, speaks remarkably well of the composer's originality and invention.
The other orchestral works on this disc are no less impressive.
Particularly beautiful is the ballad, "Soulmate Found," sung meltingly by tenor Philip Ball. "A Soldier's Farewell," too, in light of the awesome events of September 11, 2001 and the ongoing madness of war, terrorism and untimely death, draws from an emotional palette that seems nearly endless nowadays. Upbeat, however, and paying homage to Eric Coates (e.g. "London Suites"), is the triptych Fernandez calls "Windsor Pageantry," most notable for its third movement stylish reworking of "Amazing Grace for Jazz Bassoon and Strings," with the composer as soloist--- and CD producer, Paul Witt, conducting!
Throughout, the Royal Philharmonic, under Fernandez's direction, acquits itself with honors. The sound is warm, vibrant, detailed. If this music is any indication of potential, it is also less than likely that this multi-faceted artist will ever disappoint.
