    This excellent compilation of famous operatic pre-WW2 recordings start with a blast - Luisa Tetrazzini oompah-pah her way through Bellini with cartoonish abandon and her impact is such that nothing that comes afterwards can compare to her genius.Sure,they are all excellent in their way,after all we are talking about Caruso,Ponselle and Tauber here but its Tetrazzini I always return to and this CD inspired me to search for her own "Prima Voce" CD.Special mention: Richard Tauber who had a golden touch with everything and Marian Anderson who stand out.Excellent introduction.

    This is a worthy addition to the collections of music from opera from the early part of the 20th century. Names that are famous come to life as one listens to their music; one comes to see differences in technique from the earlier part of the 20th century to today. This includes some of the greatest names in opera from the time period, such as Enrico Caruso, Beniamino Gigli, Amelita Galli-Curci, and so on. Let's consider a sampling. . . .

    The redoubtable Luisa Tetrazzini sings "Ah! Non giunge" from Bellini's "La Sonnambula." We experience a different coloratura technique from that of the past 50 years; in itself, this makes this version interesting. The singer takes this song at a nice pace. Tetrazzini shows nice agility; her higher notes are cleanly hit in the first "go through." In the repeat, there is greater ornamentation. She uses higher notes as opposed to more trills and other florid techniques characteristic of the more recent past. There are some nice high notes toward the finale. She displays an attractive voice and good technique, although the c lose is a bit wild and wooly.

    John McCormack sings "Il mio Tesoro" from "Il Trovatore." He shows a rich voice, although a bit wooden to me. The song is competently sung, but not much characterization comes through (compare with Stracciari's manic "Largo al factotum").

    Amelita Galli-Curci, the well regarded coloratura soprano sings "Son vergin vezzosa," a piece well rendered by the likes of Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sills and Sumi Jo. Again, different technique from what we are used to, but nicely sung. She demonstrates a smooth and agile voice. The ornamentation is well done (if not as we are accustomed to). She hits some high notes, although the last one seems a bit thin. All in all, a nice version.

    And then there is Riccardo Stracciari, singing the wonderful "Largo al factotum" from "Il Barbiere de Siviglia." He sings with great enthusiasm and creates a character with just his voice (mirabile dictu!). He begins at a quick pace and goes from there. His voice is attractive, with a nice lower tone. He seems to enjoy singing this; he also shows nice breath control. After his repeating "Figaro" many times, he then accelerates the pace of the music, putting the music into high gear. He hits the notes well, remains musical, and generates great energy. A terrific version (he's in the same league with Tito Gobbi, whom I think did a stellar job on this work).

    Others? Gigli, Caruso, Marian Anderson, Tito Schipa, Richard Tauber, Lawrence Tibbett, Rosa Ponselle, and so on. This would be a very nice addition to the musical library of anyone who is interested in the voices from an earlier era. Despite the more primitive technology, the voices ring out and leave one with a sense of what once was in the world of opera.

    While noone will rave about the sound quality of these recordings, they are none the less important documents regarding the transition of operatic style from the 19th to the 20th centuries. Most pieces are at a quicker tempo or edited due to recording restrictions of the time, however, these imperfections vanish when one hears the stunning diction and speed of Stracciari's "Largo" from Barbiere, or the halting dignity of Ponselle's "Casta Diva" foreshadowing Callas and Sutherland. Ernestine Schumann-Heink's glorious "Brindisi" and Marian Anderson's supple English version of "mon couer ouvre a ta voix" from Samson are beautiful examples of 19th century technique and vocalism captured by 20th century technology. Not to be missed!

      This C.D. compliments my collection nicelly, where it has a song I already have, it is by a different artist, orchestra or conductor. It is a very well researched and thought out C.D. I would recomend it to anyone who already loves Opera, and to anyone who is new to Opera. It has a wonderfull variety and is very high quality. Volume II of this series is equally worthwhile I might add, I bought them both on a whim, and have not been sorry.

                One would feel from all the releases of late of old performers from the dawn of recording that there were few interesting singers of today to listen to. Well, we have many wonderful singers today, and some of them even far better musicians than many in the past. However, what strikes me, especially about compilations like this, is the incredible variety of singers there were. Each and every one of them has a very unique and personal stamp on what they sing. Unlike today, where every singer sounds the same, and interprets the music the same, and basically seems so lacking in any personality, these singers all had personality, not just vocal skill. Chaliapin's interpretation of the closing and death scene from Massenet's Don Quichotte is incredible. The singers was known as a wonderful singer and an incredible actor. One sees why that reputation was well earned.

                I found it refreshing to hear Korngold's "Gluck das mir verblieb" from Die Tote Stadt sung in the duet form it occurs in the opera. We usually are only treated to it as a solo with the tenor part taken up by a soprano (as Leontyne Price recorded it). The piece is extremely beautiful even performed as a soprano solo, but return it to its duet form, and well, we are truly given a wonderful opportunity to experience what the composer felt and was trying to share. Our singers here were Lotte Lehmann and Richard Tauber, both excellent in the German wing of opera. AND, I must add, Lehmann doesn't fudge on her higher notes as she often did in performance.

                Of course, I was really blown away with the Parsifal duet with Flagstad and Melchior. Now that is wonderful Wagner I doubt we will ever hear in this century, especially now we have such a durth of large voices, and those large ones we do have are not well suited to the German wing of opera.

                What struck me also was the non-operatic numbers, and there were a few of them. Kathleen Ferrier sings Mahler sublimely, even though that particular piece is not very interesting to me personally. Jennie Tourel is wondrous in the Mussorgsky serenade. And of course, we have Maggie Teyte. Though she sang opera, and well, she was really noted for her wonderful concerts of French music, particularly Debussy, who often accompanied her himself. Sadly, Debussy doesn't accompany her here. Still, the renditions are priceless, and no matter what all the "modern conductors and musicalogists" of today think, she learned what she learned and how to do it from the composers themselves. I would take her performances of this music as the "final say of what should be" before I would trust any more intellectual study of the music.

                This set of CD's is well worth its price (even if it were many times more costly), and the music is wondrous. I had never heard of the opera "Chopin" or of the composer Orefice. It was incredibly beautiful. Is it great music like written by the superstars of composition? Probably not, but it is well worth the effort to perform, and Pia Tassinari is breathtaking.

                There are truly gems in this collection that are worth adding to any collection of music. The transfers are also extremely good resulting in very excellent sound quality.

                5 out of 5 stars 'Great Singers' from Naxos at Lower than Usual Price.......2003-09-29

                This self-recommending 2-CD collection of 'greatest hits' gathered from Naxos's estimable 'Great Singers' series sells for less than one would expect even from a budget label like Naxos. It's a bargain that one shouldn't resist.

                It contains single selections from singers ranging over the first half of the 20th century from Caruso ('Una furtiva lagrima,' 1902) to Tebaldi ('Mi chiamano Mimì,' 1951). Included are Melba, Björling (a fabulous 'Nessun dorma'), Ponselle, Ferrier, Tauber, Gigli, Flagstad ('Liebestod,' and with Melchior the second act duet from 'Parsifal'), Elisabeth Schumann, Lotte Lehmann, Erna Berger, Tourel, Svanholm ('Prize Song'), Chaliapin and much more. All the transfers are expertly done, sound levels have been matched, and the arrangement of selections makes for more than two hours of always interesting listening.

                The only non-'hit' here is the intriguing aria from Orefice's 'Chopin' sung by Pia Tassinari. She also sings, with her husband Ferruccio Tagliavini, the second act duet from 'Werther.' On his own Tagliavini sings 'M'Appari' from Flotow's 'Martha.' Another treasurable duet is Licia Albanese and Giuseppe di Stefano singing 'O soave fanciulla' from 'Bohème.' We get Flagstad's predecessor at the Met, Frida Leider, in a striking 'Abscheulicher, wo eilst du hin?' from 'Fidelio.' (I have to add that the three horns in the 'Fidelio' aria recording are stunningly good.)

                One of the few non-opera selections, and a real high point, is the inimitable Maggie Teyte singing Debussy's 'Chansons de Bilitis,' all three of them. Yes!

                Most striking of all, for me, was the pre-war Ezio Pinzo singing the 'Confutatis' from Verdi's 'Requiem,' from the famous 1939 recording featuring Caniglia, Stignani, Gigli and Pinza, and conducted by Tullio Serafin. I hadn't heard it in years and was again excited beyond measure by the ring and masculinity of his glorious basso.

                But I do go on.

                I would suggest that you might give this sampler a try so that you can see if you want to buy any of the 'Great Singers' CDs devoted to each of these singers alone.
