Album Description

Pop Levi completely explodes the already-tired consensus of rock music, with equal parts psychedelia and glam, as he carries you on a wave of jagged guitar riffs, rumbling drums, fuzzed up bass and his unique vocals. Call it astral projection if you like, but Pop Levi is going to be a star.

5 out of 5 stars Baby caught us flirtiing...........2007-06-14

Pop Levi is an amazing artist and absolutely incredible live. If you listen to nothing else, do yourself a favor and listen to the songs 'Flirting' and 'Sugar Assault Me'. Then after you are properly infatuated, by the cd.

3 out of 5 stars Good if you're in the mood..........2007-05-22

Pop Levi has me betwixt and between. Some days I love this album. On others, I can't stand it.

This is at times almost bubblegum pop, done very well. There are elements of T-Rex, but also hints of techno. The tracks vary widely in sound and feel, and there does seem to be plenty of evidence to suggest Pop Levi is very inventive. From experience, this is a good party record. If you're in the mood for melody, harmony and meaningful lyrics though, go elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-03-14

Amidst so much tired and rehashed "music" filling current CD shelves, it's refreshing to hear something different. Not only that -- you'll get something different out of this album every time you listen to it.

Unlike the "spotlight" reviewer, I appreciate the variety and suprises. The cohesive factor throughout is coolness.

3 out of 5 stars His future looks bright, but the present can be dull........2007-02-28

There's always one that you just don't understand. An album that receives near-unanimous praise, but you can't really understand where it's all coming from. Pop Levi has been around for a while, making brief appearances with several other artists, the most notable of which is probably Ladytron. "The Return to Form Black Magick Party," however, is the artist's first solo album and first opportunity to gain fans of his own. He tries, but oftentimes the album feels more like he's trying too hard to impress. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's just utterly confusing. One thing's for sure, in the 40 plus minutes of Pop Levi's debut there's probably something for everyone, just not enough of it.

The album actually starts off on a high note with the driving distortion and piercing vocals of "Sugar Assault Me Now." Despite a few deliberately missed notes, the song is energetic, fun, and admittedly pretty catchy. Here, as he does throughout the album, Levi stacks layers upon layers of vocals and guitars to make the songs sound fuller and more complete. It works quite well. This great song is followed by the album's first single and arguably strongest song, "Blue Honey." The song is plagued by a repetitive bass line, but is saved by the artist's vocal performance in the chorus ("It's the way you squeeze me, baby"). It sounds like the better moments of classic rock, often stepping into Led Zepplin territory, without fully sounding like a rip-off.

"(A Style Called) Cryin' Chic" has a steady groove to it, but not much else to offer. The lyrics here are repetitive to the point of being annoying. Essentially, Levi takes one line, repeats it four times, and then does the same thing with about a dozen other lines. The actual 2-bar guitar riff doesn't ever change throughout the song, which just adds to the repetitiveness of it. "Pick Me Up Uppercut" is probably my favorite song on the album, despite it being the most obnoxious song since Aqua's "Barbie Girl." It has a very unique appeal to it, and sounds like a mix between glam rock and The Go-Gos.

The album goes off the deep-end from here, never really recapturing the energy or appeal that it began with. "Dollar Bill Rock" is a futile attempt at classic rock n roll, though one could definitely assume that it would be a better song live than it is here. "Flirting" lends the help of a xylophone to give it a more friendly feel, but like so many other songs on the album, it suffers from being incredibly repetitive. To be honest, "From the Day That You Were Born" is the album's only real notable track throughout it's second half. Levi plays acoustic guitar and sings, but not much else is happening. On an album that is full of layers and layers of vocals, guitars, and other noise, the song serves as a peaceful and welcomed break. It ends the album on a positive note, which is always appreciated.

If "The Return to Form Black Magick Party" is the best that Pop Levi has to offer, his career will either be short-lived or elongated on a wave of hype. Fortunately for the artist, however, the album seems to really be the tip of the iceberg for Levi. Though it's really hit or miss, it's high points are good enough to get even the most skeptical listener excited for what this artist has yet to do. That's enough of a reason to give it a listen in my book. Pop Levi is a name you might want to remember, even if this album isn't your thing.

Recommended for fans of classic rock and anyone who wants to hear what the future of indie rock could very well sound like.

4 out of 5 stars Gong - 'Magick Brother' (Spalax / Charly).......2004-09-23

Nice reissue of the lp that REALLY would technically BE the very first Gong lp,as for 'Magick Brothers' was originally released in 1969.However,some have claimed that 'Camembert Electrique' was Gong's very first album, but it came out in 1971,I believe. It appears that 'Magick Brother' was recorded by pretty much a duo made up of Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth. This CD may be more primitive and a tad more folk than other Gong releases, but it's still top rate.Just some really good cosmic rock,as one might label it.All ten tracks sound great, but I was specially fond of the stellar "Mystic Sister:Magick Brother","Glad To Sad To Say",the poetic "Chainstore Chant:Pretty Miss" and "Princess Dreaming"(THIS tune may've actually influenced the band Brainticket,to a degree).A must have for ALL Gong fans.

That's one thing that amazes me about this band, the tracks seem so catchy that when you sing along to it in your head you kinda wonder how the hell they made it that catchy and also how they made completely mind-bogglingly complex music so catchy. It just doesn't add up really but then.....Gong aren't a normal band by any stretch of the imagination. Just one look at the track names should tell you that much. It's amazing that they can branch out in all different manners of music eg jazz, rock, pop etc. and still tie it within the same song. A real touch of class that. Crafty gits they are, and well worth the money you spend on this.

        Album Description

Reissue featuring two solo LPs by this British Invasion r&b great who headed the band The Graham Bond Organization, the group Jack Bruce & Ginger Baker played in before forming Cream with Eric Clapton. Both 1971's Holy Magick' & 1974's 'We Put Our Magick On You' were originally released on Mercury. As the album titles suggest, the lyrical themes on the records revolve around Bond's fascination with the occult, and the western practice of magick in specific. 1999 release. Standard jewel case.

3 out of 5 stars The lyrics ruin it, but the music is excellent!.......2003-05-19

This is unquestionably some of the coolest and most original music that I've ever heard in my life. (So original, in fact, that I can't think of anything comparable - except to say that it's jazz-fusion-rock with a heavy emphasis on the jazz element...steps beyond The Graham Bond Organization.) At times this music is breathtaking. As for the lyrics, though, as one can tell from the song titles, yes, they're rather occult/new age-oriented...and...well...one often wishes that these were instrumental albums!

I do have to agree with the one reviewer and say that "Moving Towards the Light" and "Time to Die" are incredible works!

1 out of 5 stars spooky? maybe. goofy? definitely.......2001-06-29

being the upstanding man of integrity that i am, it would be blasphemous for me to hold someone's beliefs against them. however, when those beliefs lead to tripe like this from more-famous-for-whom-he-played-with-oh-and-by-the-way-he's-EEEEVVVIIIILLLLL graham bond, it behooves me to speak up. this is as far from bond's better-than-perfunctory early blues work as california is from london. its occultic mumbo-jumbo mixed with healthy doses of hippie jazz and throw-it-at-the-wall, maybe-it'll-stick nonsense. i wanted to be spooked out by this. instead i wasted a good chunk o change. its not even silly enough to laugh at. DISAPPOINTMENT...

5 out of 5 stars Still Mighty After All of These Years.......2000-10-09

Graham Bond was one of the most influential artists of the 60s and early 70s. His untimely death in 1974 ended what would have been the path of a legend.

This recording demonstrates his devotion to Magick and to his father Aleister Crowley. This is REAL new age music. It is powerful. I highly recommend this recording to any who practice Thelemic Magick.

Bond was the very best at what he did. Thanks to this recent reissue he will now live forever.

4 out of 5 stars The Return Of the Wizard!.......2000-01-12

Graham Bond died in May of 1974 and it seemed the world of music forgot about one of the most interesting and legendary artists to come out of the early 60's music scene. Graham was multi-talented, mastering the alto sax, piano and the organ. His vocals and phrasing are truely one of a kind. Graham experimented with various forms of R & B but these particular albums are totally spiritual and mystical. Check out "The Magician" , "Moving Towards the Light" and "Time to Die". Some of the most moving pieces of music I've ever heard. Graham was experimeting with a form of new age music long before anyone had ever even tried to. If only "Love is the Law", another one of Graham's albums could be released then I can finally have a chance to blend all these great works together and be very happy.

I have been listen to this for a few years now and find all of the songs very good. However I do wish that I could find more music by Teisan. I find that his for his very hypnotic. Every time I hear him it's like I being transported to another time and place.

        5 out of 5 stars Bewitchment.......2003-08-22

This entire CD puts me into an almost trance like state. Haunted is enticing, eerie, and... haunting. Ophelia is my favorite though, unbelievably beautiful, a touch of sadness and longing come through, bringing the listener into another world. Carnival ride brings a different twist, dragging you into a slightly crazed and exciting world... I wish they had kept the name Coven13 though, Seven13 just doesn't have the same ring to it.

5 out of 5 stars A CD that moved my Body & Mind!!.......2001-01-22

A voice that could lead the pack of all the new top acts out today! And music that will lift your spirit to new heights in your daily life! I recomend turning down the lights and putting this cd in your player and sharing a bottle of wine with that special someone in your life tonight!!!

        5 out of 5 stars Refreshing!.......2001-01-19

Original lyrics! Original tunes! The male vocalist has a wonderfully rich voice, but the keyboardist is a true master. The lyrics are touching at times, thought provoking at other times. Thoroughly delighted with this CD and looking forward to seeing another one produced soon.

4 out of 5 stars Coven 13, with or without the "witch" hype - it's good music.......2001-01-17

I found Book of Shadows to be an interesting blend of many things. For the pagan, there are themes woven within the lyrics to satisfy. For the non-pagan there is great musical arrangement and thought provoking lyrics. The range of style in the music found on this CD proves the talents of those involved with creating it. One of the things I appreciate most is that the songs in both music and lyrics provoke thought. I have read recent negative reviews by "pagans" admonishing Coven 13 for not being "direct" enough with their "paganism". I have to disagree. I think by being less direct, they open the door to people who are also not pagan. Therefore not limiting themselves or their audience. I have to disagree with another couple of recent reviews (that really sound more like personal "sour grapes" than reveiws) that praise the singer and mock the musician. This CD, although far from perfect is well put together, the composer is obviously highly learned in her art and the singer is obviously talented as well. I'd recommend this CD to anyone who likes something new and doesn't mind having thought provoked while listening to great music.

5 out of 5 stars Young Wakeman and Steve Howe Are Mystical !.......2006-10-21

Oliver Wakeman the son of Rick Wakeman, has inherited his father's dexterous keyboard virtuosity. This instrumental CD is replete with sounds simulating orchestras and it invokes ancient England. Steve Howe's wonderful guitar sounds and input incredibly enhance the quality of this CD. If you like Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe's guitar work with Yes, you will certainly like this classic rock and mystical sounding CD.

        Album Description

Sisyphus Records, a division of the Danford Entertainment Group, distributed by OarFin Records, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Artist biography: Originally known as Gina's Alchemy, Alchemy VII is a 7-piece rock group that combines musical influences of Rush, Heart, Yes, Led Zeppelin, and others with lyrics that speak of empowerment, the magic of life and responsibility for ourselves and the planet. The vocals are driven by Gina Citoli, a lifelong rock singer whose upbeat and honest personality shine through her powerful voice. The drums and percussion are provided by Carl Wergyn, also a lifelong performer, whose innate love of rhythm is expressed in every performance. Guitars are provided by Steve Lundberg, a longtime veteran of bar band experiences with the chops to prove it. Sue Birch is the bassist and graphic artist, supplying a true gift of talent to both the foundation and exterior essence of the group. These four core members of Alchemy VII spent the last half of the 1990s performing and writing together before releasing their debut CD. James Walsh (of Gypsy) provided keyboards and background vocals along with three other accomplished background vocalists: Sarah Montgomery, Mary Grantham, and Bobby Jones (also of Gypsy). At this time, the group is preparing to release a 7 song EP in April of 2001, followed by numerous dates at outdoor festivals. In the meantime, their website is generating quite a bit of recognition in Great Britain, The Netherlands, and Australia, with radio stations in these countries broadcasting the music from The Magick Vol. 1. MP3 is also good to the group - they have several songs on the MP3 rock charts, with the title track reaching the top 5 of the MP3 progressive chart.

Much of the neo-Pagan music I've listened to has been either Enya-like, basically Celtic sounding, or dark and spooky. This album has, fortunately, none of these characteristics. The lead vocalist has an extremely strong voice, and behind her is a throughly enjoyable rock sound. Their sound reminds me of the Indigo Girls. As a warning: the beginnings of many of the songs start off melodic and then turn to more driving and energetic -- the clips here seem to mostly start at the driving part, so you miss the build-up on some of the songs. The only downside to this particular version of the album is that it doesn't contain their song, "Dancer", which is one of my personal favorites.

Another plus is that the album has a good mix of music types. The songs sound different and have different themes. "Eyes of a Child" and "Thousand Years of Peace", and "Celebration" for example, have themes that probably appeal to most spiritual people, but aren't particularly Pagan in nature. "Earth Song" is softer and more "New Agey sounding" for some of the track, and "The Moon Tune" is has sorta zany lyrics (it's the one I like least on the CD).

The music does have a Wiccan focus (for example, there are references to "drawing down the moon"), but I think the music would be enjoyable for other flavors of neo-Pagans, too. For example, while there are references to magic, the lyrics are encompassing enough to be interpreted in a variety of ways - as the magic of experiencing the divine, for example. Many of the lyrics include themes that are earth-centric and speak about the beauty and relevence of older Pagan religions.

        Overall, highly recommended.
