Barry on Broadway.......2006-09-01

What a great idea--Barry on Broadway. Who-da-thunk-it? This is another great album from the master of versatility. Obviously, a little different than a standard Manilow album, there are 18 tracks of Broadway musical tunes in all. All beautifully done and dated from 1904 "Give My Regards to Broadway" (Little Johnny Jones) to 1991 "But the World Goes Round" (And the World Goes Round). The 18 tracks were selected by Barry after researching hundreds of Broadway show songs.

"Where or When" by Richard Rogers and from Babes in Arms was always one of my favorites, as is "Dancing in the Dark." "Look to the Rainbow," from Finian's Rainbow is a beautiful duet between Barry and Barbara Cook.

The only song I didn't like was "You Can Have the TV," a song about a couple splitting up and so, they are splitting up their stuff. Too depressing for me (you take this--I'll take that). Come on, Barry. You're too upbeat for that song! Still, the song is done well; it's just depressing.

One of my favorite Manilow songs is also here. "If We Only Have Love", from the 1968 Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. I have this song on another Manilow album and did not realize it was from a musical. (If we only have love, we could stop all the bad stuff and make the world a better place.) So true. I wish everyone felt this way and just tried a little harder to find the love, instead of the anger.(--Oh well, dream on.)

Anyway, "Dancing in the Dark" is so beautiful. It makes me wish I could go ballroom dancing right now, and just dance off on a cloud into the stars. What a fantastic song!

"I'll Be Seeing You" might be from the 1938 musical "Right This Way," but I will ALWAYS remember it as Liberace's theme song, and I betcha Barry remembers too. My brother and I (God rest his soul) were GLUED to the TV in the 50s(?) watching this extraordinarily talented master showman perform. When I heard this song, it brought back the memories of the glitzy band jackets, the white piano, and the candelabra. But, more than anything, the show always ended with "I'll Be Seeing You," and, to the best of my recollection, it sounded just like Barry does the song. When I heard this song, it brought a few tears to my eye. (Yeah, I know..."whimp"!). I suspect Liberace is looking down saying, "Thanks, Barry, for remembering me."

There are many other songs, as you can see from the list above, such as "All I Need is the Girl", from Gypsy. A very enjoyable album that I almost didn't buy, but I'm so glad I did!

This cd is unbelievable! I can't stop playing it! I hope he'll do another one with other "showstoppers" on it. This one is a must have.

great concept for Barry.......2003-04-27

Prior to buying this cd, I really wasn't much into showtunes. I love Barry Manilow and think he is a great singer and has great taste in songs. HIs version of where or when is the best by far that I have ever heard! The arrangement is beautiful. It doesn't get better than that. Another standout song is "look to the rainbow", a beautiful duet, probably Barry Manilow's best duet by far. "I'll be seeing you", "old friends", "the kid inside", "Never met a man I didn't like", and "bring him home" are all great songs, which are the kinds of songs we've come to and love by Barry Manilow. Thanks Barry for making old songs fresh and new.

What Really "Shows".......2002-11-05

is that Mr Manilow had a really great time making "Showstoppers"! He couldn't possibly laugh the way he does in "Once in Love With Amy" if he wasn't having the best time ever. I'm having a great time too, learning all the words and singing along. I do have favorites and those include "All I I Need is the Girl, and "Real Live Girl", but I've found new favorites in "Look to the Rainbow, and But the World Goes 'Round", and I thank Barry for giving me these new songs to love. As an added bonus, I work with singers and if I start a song someone around here will sing along with me. This is so joyful it's like champagne bubbles in your blood!
My only wish would be that Barry would make "Showstoppers II" and put in something from "The Music Man", but I suppose he still has a few hundred favorites of his own that could go in it...sigh. No matter how much we get, we still want MORE! (But isn't that that the way you're supposed to leave 'em????)

Few would risk making guarantees when it comes to a hodgepodge of a disc like Showstoppers, but one thing is for sure: it's bound to become the only CD in your collection you bought knowing full well you would have to hold your nose through certain tracks. That, of course, is the fun of the American Idol franchise: You may love Carrie Underwood's rootin'-tootin' version of Martina McBride's "Independence Day" but loathe Anthony Federov's syrup-soaked rendition of the '80s chestnut "Everytime You Go Away"; you may swoon over Bo Bice's Grass Roots-style vocal on the Gavin DeGraw hit "I Don't Want to Be" but find yourself making the gag-me gesture when Mikalah Gordon steps up to the mike for a Streisand-aping take on "God Bless the Child." Call it a lowbrow musical twist on the famous theatrical formula "You will laugh! You will cry!", but instead of laughing and crying you will love and hate (then again, laughter and tears could enter into the equation after a close listen to Constantine Maroulis's "My Funny Valentine"). The final cut, an ensemble number, puts this amateurs' jumble into perspective: given the right producer, anybody can sing, even those Simon Cowell would sooner see at a cut-rate karaoke bar. --Tammy La Gorce

Good Group.......2007-03-28

I remember this group being a good group. This was a good CD and most of the songs were good. The stand out songs were "Independence Day", Part Time Lover, Total Eclipse of the heart" by Carrie Underwood, Nikko Smith and Jessica Sierra respectively. "Best of my Love" was weak considering that Vonzell Solomom was one of the better singers this season. Constatine's arrangement of My Funny Valentine was hidious especially if you've heard Stevie Wonder's version and Chaka Khan's version.

By Far the best-sounding group song from any season, When You Tell Me That You Love Me, is enough reason for me to give this album a good review. You also have Carrie Underwood in her element, and the 2 runners-up Bo Bice and Vonzell Solomon are very good as well. Nadia, Jessica and Scott are also good. I really wish that they would have done away with Mikalah and Lindsey, but oh well. Not too terrible. :)

A Good Album From (Mostly) Good Artists.......2006-07-06

I liked AI season four. Here's my grade for each one of the tracks.
Carrie Underwood "Independence Day" This is Carrie at her best. She was the first country singer to win "American Idol" and this track shows why. A
Bo Bice "I Don't Wanna Be" Bo had a really great voice. He was actually my favorite in the competition. But this wasn't a good song choice. I much prefered his versions of "Vehicle" or "Whipping Post". Still, Bo does great on this one too. A-
Vonzell Solomon "Best of my Love" Vonzell had a lot of charisma, but I was not crazy about her voice. But she does surprisingly well here. I guess she sounds good recorded. A
Anwar Robinson "A House is Not a Home" Anwar had a great voice and proves on this track that he should have stayed longer. A
Nadia Turner "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" Nadia's blusey voice nails this one. I really hated the arrangement, though. B+
Nikko Smith "Part Time Lover" Nikko does great on a hard song. What more can I say? A+
Constantine Maroulis "My Funny Valentine" Agian, I hated the annoying arrangement, but loved the vocals. B
Jessica Sierra "Total Eclipse of the Heart" Jessica does beautifly on this rock classsic. A+
Anthony Fedorov "Everytime You Go Away" Anthony is somewhat weak on lower notes, but he covers it well. B
Scott Savol "Agianst All Odds" Very monotone, mediocre vocals. Scott just isn't that good. Still, he tries, and for that he doesn't fail, but instead gets a D.
Lindsey Cardinale "Knock on Wood" Lindsey does okay. The arrangement is great. C
Mikaylah Gordon "God Bless the Child" Mikaylah has a nice voice, but the arrangement is just stupid. B-
"Everytime You Say You Love Me" This was pretty ok. C

a good cd.......2006-07-02

My favorites are Jessica Sierra, Nikko Smith, Vonzell Solomon, and Carrie Underwood. They were really good on this CD. The good ones are Anthony Federov, Bo Bice, Constantine Maroulis, Lindsay Cardinale, and Anwar Robinson. They were good but not great on this CD. The ones who weren`t so good were Scott Savol, Nadia Turner, and Mikaylah Gordan. They were bad on this CD. Overall this is one of my favorite Idol CDs.

MightyREAL is a 15 volume CD compilation series that explores a very wild, yet musically elusive period in nightclubbing history: 1980 - 1988. A much more disco-oriented volume in this 80s series--including a 1970s classic.......2007-03-15

While this volume of the 80s dance mix series does not have as many big name arists as the other volumes so far, there is one standout track that makes this a must for collectibles. Ironically, it's NOT from the 80s! Instead, it's 1978's mega-gay club hit "Love is in the Air" by John Paul Young, in it's COMPLETE, ORIGINAL 12" mix.

Other tracks are a blend of 70s disco (McCoo & Davis, The Raes), NRG (Harlow, Rainey), and a couple of new wave synth dance (blancmange, hit list). So far, this is the most disco-flavored volume in the series...even many of the songs from the 80s sound like they missed the boat on the disco era. Personally, I would have preferred "A Little Love (keeps the doctor away)" by The Raes over the track included. It's just such a great track whose 12" version has not appeared on CD. And I also would rather this series stick to the NRG/new wave/synth pop sounds of the 80s instead of featuring so many 80s songs that would have sounded dated even in the 80s.

Do Turn Around!.......2006-02-28

This was a no-brainer purchase. When I saw "Don't Turn Around" by The Raes listed with its song length, I snatched this CD up. "Can We Try Again" is another song I'd given up on ever hearing again, but here it is. This CD has some well-known songs ("Souvenirs" is readily available on CD) and some not so known. "Take Off" is new to me. It features a bombastic show-tune sound not uncommon in gay dance music of the early 80's. Blancmange is a litle out of left-field in this collection, but still welcome. Great songs, excellent sound quality, full-length versions, and best of all, UNMIXED!! This is joyous music, with lyrics, harmony and emotion.

This is an excellent opera collection.......2006-05-04

If you want to get a complete opera, this CD isn't for you, but it is an excellent compilation of different opera arias from various composers, most of which are Italian. Some highlights are "Vient, Diletto" and "Ah Mes Amis".
