The product description says it all: "[the album will] appeal to a sophisticated lifestyle-oriented consumer". But will it appeal to a tango lover? Hmmm.

Unfortunately the better tracks here are the least adventurous, which should tell you something. "Libertango" is completely in the style of the Gotan Project's first album (which is no bad thing). But from here on its mostly downhill. "Vuelvo al sur" is given a very simple repetitive drum-bass treatment with no variation of beat.

What drew me to this album was seeing that track 3, "Homage to Chet Baker", was based on the wonderful tune "Alone Together". Unfortunately it's just a mess - the wonderful melody has no chance. Listen to Jo Stafford to hear this tune done properly.

Track 5, "The Gaucho's Pain" is indeed that, a painful reworking of Piazzolla's "Oblivion"

In summary: a commercial attempt to cash in on the tango nuevo mini-boom, with little of originality - sorry

I bought this CD just for Libertango and found myself with quite a few nice surprises. The touch-up of almost lounge-like effect gives the music a layer of fullness than the traditional tango. Unlike the many comtemporary tango mixes that lack a distinct tune, the pieces in this album excel by revolving around a few memorable passionate main themes. The vocal parts are sexy and sad. Recommended songs #1,2,4,6,8.

Just came back form Buenos Aires, its a city vibrant with contemporary jazz, first class musicians and a good display of argentinian jazz I brought along.

I almost missed Bajo Cero for I looked in the jazz section and it was classified as Tango.. if you are familar with Piazzolla then this should come as a refreshingly pure addition.. if you are not, then this is refreshingly good introduction.. not to miss

Pablo Ziegler, a protege of one of Argentina's greatest composers, Astor Piazzolla, produced with Quique Sinesi guitar and Walter Castro bandoneon a beautiful CD. It features Ziegler's own compositions as well as music by Piazzolla and others. The tunes and playing often soulful are spirited and passionate in the true style and sensitivity that musicians from that country usually produce. And unlike many of the Piazzolla recordings, the bandoneon when played by the composer, is not allowed to dominate the sound, producing a much more intimate effect resembling a chamber music trio. Buy this CD if you enjoy the best that Argentina can produce.

The Rough Guide To Tango Nuevo showcases the diverse fragmentation of styles that tango has been experiencing since the death of Astor Piazzolla, the last greatest innovator. New artists are revolutionising tango from within, forging an urban folk style for their own times and lives. `Nuevo' (or `New') tango moves through dark-hued dub tango, tango electronica, tango with a sassy salsa twist, and even grungy tango for the rock generation. Today, contemporary tango, though still firmly rooted in the mordant, melancholy soul of the urban Argentinean, adds newly imported sounds and ideas into the mix, and the results are as stirring as they were a century ago.

          Of all the Piazzolla album I have, this is possibly the best recorded one. The instruments literally jump at your face. Audiophiles might consider this album on the bright side, but it works really well for this live concert album. The players were all excellent, as usual. The violin, in particular, sends a shiver down your spine. Yo-Yo Ma once said that no one can listen to Piazzolla without weeping. There's no better example than this album.

          Also, Piazzolla's little speech at the end of disc 1 is a nice touch, and brought me even closer to his music. All in all, if you're a Piazzolla fan, get this.
