5 out of 5 stars The Martinu concerto as it was meant to be.......2005-06-29

This disc fills a useful space in the catalogue, containing as it does the complete music for harpsichord by Bohuslav Martinu, plus as a filler one of the underappreciated masterpieces of the 20th Century, the harpsichord concerto of Manuel de Falla.

The Martinu concerto dates from the mid-1930s, and is a fine example of his neo-classical period. It is in the usual three movements, with two bouncy and rhythmically vivacious outer movements surrounding a touching slow movement. The well-judged instrumentation provides some particularly interesting touches--piano as part of the chamber orchestra accompaniment sounding alongside the soloistic harpsichord, for example.

Most previous recordings of this work have not followed Martinu's original intentions, and have used a full chamber orchestra instead of the nine instruments given in the score, with the result that the harpsichord is often drowned out by the orchestral sound. Not here--the solo instrument sounds out loud and clear, and the accompanying ensemble is very well articulated too. This, combined with the fine (and extremely idiomatic) playing from Monica Knoblochova and an ad hoc ensemble of some of her regular collaborators, makes this recording an easy recommendation in this work.

Just as fine is the performance of Martinu's delightful Promenades, four short pieces for violin, flute and harpsichord. These are amongst the most ingratiating of the composer's shorter works, melodically, rhythmically and colouristically inventive, and the performance here simply sparkles.

The solo harpsichord pieces are slightly less successful. The Two Pieces are studies for the concerto. Entertaining they may be, but they are also slight and unlikely to command repeat attention. More meaty is the 1958 harpsichord sonata. This eight-minute work (in three movements without a break) packs a lot of material into its short duration, but even a good performance like this can't quite hide the monochrome colours and the dutiful rather than inspired nature of the work. The two impromptus from 1959 are amongst the last works Martinu completed. They are short and well-constructed but again rather minor Martinu.

If the disc sags just a little with the solo pieces, it ends with a tour de force. Falla's harpsichord concerto will astonish anyone who thinks of him entirely as the author of Nights in the Gardens of Spain. This fascinating 15-minute work for harpsichord and five instruments is in a completely different world, one that might remind some listeners of Stravinsky and late Debussy, but which is distinctly its composer's own. Its mixture of austerity, rhythmic flexibility, quirky melodies and colourful instrumentation make for a wonderful and thought-provoking piece--and one really unlike anything else in the harpsichord repertoire.

With fine performances throughout and a well-written booklet (even if it perhaps has too many pictures of Ms Knoblochova in it), this disc is easy to recommend to anyone interested in the repertoire.

4 out of 5 stars French-Influenced Piano Miniatures.......2007-03-27

If I hadn't read the CD label, I might have thought on hearing the music here that it was by a member of Les Six or one of their followers. These are French-influenced pieces that are, like much music by Les Six, influenced strongly by early American jazz. Martinu was not a pianist but he wrote a lot of piano music and it appears that it was all expertly done, at least from the evidence of this second volume of what appears to be a project to record all of Martinu's piano music. Martinu: Complete Piano Music, Vol. 1

Four sets of 'Puppet Music', comprising fourteen miniatures totaling about thirty minutes of music, contain pieces with titles like 'Pierrot's Serenade', 'Harlequin', 'The Shy Puppet', and 'Shimmy', the latter influenced by a dance craze from American that had reached Paris in the 1920s. Of course, Martinu was living in Paris for much of his early adulthood and even after many years residence in the US (after 1940) he continued to miss Parisian life. This is obvious in the latest pieces played here -- 'The Fifth Day of the Fifth Moon' and 'Les bouquinistes du Quai Malaquais[. The first of these was dedicated to the Chinese-born wife of Martinu's great friend, fellow composer Alexander Tcherepnin. The second commemorates happy days Martinu had haunting used book stalls in Paris in the 1920s, although the piece itself was written in nostalgic recollection from his vantage point of New York in the 1940s.

'Film en miniature' containing six pieces none over two minutes, has a scherzo that sounds a lot like Poulenc's 'Toccata'. It also contains a sexy 'Tango' and a cheeky 'Valse.' The CD also contains two of Martinu's 'garden suites': 'Spring in the Garden' (which describes children's games remembered from Martinu's Czech childhood) and 'Butterflies and Birds of Paradise', inspired by Czech artist Max Svabinský's collection of butterflies and birds. Debussy's influence is obvious in these works.

These are probably not deathless works, but they are charming, lightly scored and entirely tonal. They are occasionally virtuosic but mostly high-quality salon music. They are played gorgeously by talented Czech-Swiss pianist Giorgio Koukl in lifelike sound.

4 out of 5 stars Martinu's Rarely Played Piano Music, Vol. 1.......2007-02-02

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) is not particularly known for his piano music, but on the evidence of the pieces presented here, in Volume 1 of what I can presume will be a series of releases comprising all his piano works, they are not negligible. The works on this CD are all miniatures, none lasting longer than three minutes. (There is an error in the booklet; it indicates that one of the movements from Eight Preludes, No. 7 in the series, lasts eleven minutes, but that is a typo; it lasts 1:10). They are early works mostly from the 1920s, none coming after his move to the US in 1941. It is evident that even as early at 1920, when Martinu still lived in his native village in Czechoslovakia, his distinctive voice had begun to emerge. His influences include American jazz, Stravinsky, his Parisian teacher Albert Roussel, and Debussy. There are times when his writing reminds one of the cheeky Poulenc; of course after his move to Paris in 1923 he was immersed in the music of Les Six. Martinu was not a pianist per se, having started out as a violinist, but the music is pianistic and expertly written.

The works presented here include Eight Preludes, H. 181 (H. stands for Harry Halbreich, the noted French musicologist who cataloged Martinu's works); Fenêtre sur le jardin, H. 270; Fables, H. 138; Trois esquisses, H. 160; Le Noël, H. 167; Esquisses de danses, H. 220; and Foxtrot, H. 126. There is a good deal of influence in these early pieces from American ragtime and jazz. Foxtrot, one of several such-named pieces Martinu wrote, is the earliest work here and sounds, much of the time, as if it could have been written by Joplin. Fenêtre sur jardin (Window on a Garden) was written in 1938, the last work he wrote before he got a telephone call from Rudolf Firkusny warning him of the imminent invasion of France by the Nazis; shortly after he and his wife left for Portugal and eventually came to the USA. Trois esquisses (Three Sketches) are titled Blues, Tango and Charleston and sound for all the world like music Debussy might have written had he visited New Orleans and New York.

Le Noël, written in 1921, couldn't be more different than Trois esquisses, written the same year. It is influenced by the lean and tart harmonies of Les Six. It exudes Gallic charm. Fables, written in Paris in 1923 but given Czech titles, is a collection of five character pieces characterizing the farm, a rabbit, monkeys, a chicken and an angry bear. This is definitely a Bohemian farm; there are rhythms and melodies that trace their origins to Czech folk music. Esquisses de danses, a five piece collection from 1932, is the work here most influenced by Roussel although one would probably never actually confuse it with that Parisian master's works. It has some of Roussel's harmonic asperity coupled with lively rhythms.

Giorgio Koukl is a Swiss pianist born in Czechoslovakia in 1953, trained in Switzerland and Italy. Among his teachers were Nikita Magalov, Jacques Fèvrier and Rudolf Firkusny. His playing is marked by rhythmic élan and clear delineation of harmonic processes while not sacrificing warmth. Just listen to the whirling Allegro vivo from Esquisses de danses and you'll see that he is a true virtuoso who brings out the arching melodies while nonetheless dancing furiously. I believe a second volume of this series is already out but I have not heard it yet; I intend to.

The theremin may be one of the oddest instruments ever invented: the electronic device's high-pitched sound resembles no other--and you never even touch it to play it. It's become familiar from that novel Beach Boys solo on "Good Vibrations" and the occasional sci-fi score sound bite, but it's seldom thought of as the serious instrument its inventor Leon Theremin wanted it to be. This recording, like the must-have Clara Rockmore disc, The Art of the Theremin, attempts to change that. Lydia Kavina might very well be the best thereminist playing today; she's the inventor's last protégée (as well as being the granddaughter of his cousin) and her range on the instrument is unparalleled. Here, she tackles the body of work made specifically for the instrument from the likes of Joseph Schillinger, Bohuslav Martinu, Percy Grainger, Isidor Achron, and a handful of contemporary composers. Grainger's "Free Music #1" for four theremins eerily defies the bounds of written composition (Kavina plays all four theremin roles); Kavina's own Suite is an impressive showpiece of the instrument's range; and Vladimir Komarov's tape-and-theremin piece "Voice of Theremin" is built entirely of passages from the instrument and the voice of Theremin himself, all processed through a computer with stunning results. Martinu's Fantasia for Theremin, Oboe, Piano, and Strings is the disc's real charm: a 14-minute composition with plenty of oboe-theremin interplay and lovely string passages from the Portland String Quartet. For the classical fan who has everything, this disc may be the perfect gift. --Jason Verlinde

Album Description

As her hands dance around the instrument's antennas, Lydia Kavina proves the theremin is no mere producer of Hollywood sound effects. Russian theremin virtuoso Kavina presents the first release EVER dedicated solely to original compositions for the instrument - spanning the "golden age" of the theremin from its invention in the 1920s to contemporary works. One of the first attempts to unite music and scientific technology in the 20th century, the theremin is considered to be the ancestor of modern electronic musical instruments. Its evolution from scientific curiosity (discussed in scientific journals and manufactured by RCA) to virtuoso classical instrument (played by Clara Rockmore in Carnegie Hall) to "instrument of the future" (according to Cage, Varse, Grainger and others) to Hollywood sound effect (played in soundtracks to Spellbound, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Lost Weekend, etc.) to rock-and-roll instrument (used by The Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Phish, Portishead and others) has been well documented. This disc is full of discoveries, including Martinu's Fantasia, and Percy Grainger's graphically notated Free Music #1 (1935) for 4 theremins, along with other "period" works by Schillinger (known for his writings on music and as a guru to composers from Gershwin to Earle Brown) and Isidor Achron (the accompanist to Heifetz). Modern works are represented by Kavina herself, Brazilian Jorge Antunes (with electronic tape) and Russian Vladimir Komarov, whose work also incorporates the inventor's voice and a rendition of Glinka's infamous The Lark, which Theremin had performed for Lenin to demonstrate the instrument. Lydia Kavina is the world's leading thereminist today. The granddaughter of Leon Theremin's first cousin, she was the inventor's last protŽgŽe. She began studying the instrument with him at the age of nine, and was concertizing by age fourteen. Since then, Kavina has given over 500 performances. She has also appeared in Howard Shore's soundtracks to eXistenZ and the Oscar-winning movie Ed Wood, and has performed in the Tom Waits/Robert Wilson collaborations Alice and The Black Rider. Kavina now serves on the lecture staff of The Glinka Museum and is affiliated with the Theremin Center, both in Moscow.

3 out of 5 stars good (but not great) vibrations..........2005-11-20

ah yes, the theremin... that weird sound in "Good Vibrations"... and much, much more: here we have a collection of "serious" compositions for this enigmatic electronic instrument dating from 1929-1996, performed by the (of course) mysteriously beautiful Lydia Kavina (described as "today's leading thereminist"... though many would argue that Geoff Brady is equally deserving of that title and just as mysteriously beautiful.) These pieces are presented chronologically and are all for theremin accompanied by other instruments (piano, string quartet & oboe, magnetic tape, or other theremins... no "solos" for some reason...)

The music is either pleasantly ethereal, engagingly eerie, maddeningly tedious, or just plain ridiculous (the more recent theremin+tape works often sound exactly like one of those "Halloween Sound Effects" albums.) Basically, the shorter the better is the general rule here... keep it under three minutes or you're in trouble (this will help with radio play too...) The real appeal is hearing the pieces you never knew existed for this instrument by Martinu and especially Percy Grainger (is there another composer more underrated than Percy Grainger? You just gotta love Percy Grainger!) The bonus is a couple of nice enough (short) things from other obscure 1930s composers (Schillinger, Wilckens, & Achron -- sounds like a law firm...) The problem is the more recent material, which is all totally disposable and/or annoying as hell (but I guess it fills up the CD.)

Basically, while this disc is essential for theremin-o-philes (yes, they are everywhere) and interesting enough for the curious, at the end of the day you will have to admit that nothing here can ever measure up to the greatness of "Good Vibrations."

5 out of 5 stars The theremin continues!.......2004-05-19

The music world is not exactly teeming with theremin virtuosi. Quite simply, the theremin is one of the most difficult of all electronic instruments to master. Imagine an instrument which is played in thin air. The thereminist has no contact with a keyboard or a fingerboard. This instrument is played by moving one's hands close to or away from two antennae. One antenna controls pitch. The other controls volume. It is a terribly unforgiving instrument. It demands that the player be able to remain perfectly still, apart from his or her hands. Slight movements of the body can and will affect pitch.

Lydia Kavina is a master of the theremin. Very few have ever mastered it on her level. She was taught by the inventor of the theremin himself, the late Leon Theremin (Lev Termen). Since the death of Clara Rockmore, it is good to see someone continuing on in promoting this most magical and difficult of instruments.

This recording offers many treats for the listener. Chief among them is the Martinu Fantasy. For those who admire Martinu's work, this CD offers a recording of a rarely heard work of Martinu's.

2 out of 5 stars Too weird.......2003-02-25

Despite Ms.Kavina's obvious mastery of the theremin I found the bulk of the cd to be too contemporary, abstract, and just plain weird for my taste. Call it avant garde if you will. None of the pieces left any memorable impression upon me and for much of the cd the music just sounds improvised and played more like musical gymnastics than melodic tunes. Not that that is a necessity in music by any means, but that style personally turns me off and to blunt just bores me. I wasn't even able to sit through the entire cd in one sitting. I also find the tone of Kavina's theremin to be too pure and sterile, more like a synthesizer than the "classic" theremin tone, a drastic contrast to the richness and warmth of Clara Rockmore's RCA instrument. If you're looking for a cd to start your collecion of theremin music I whole heartedly recommend passing one this one and getting the Clara Rockmore, or even the Samuel Hoffman cds, first and perhaps return to this one should you desire a little more theremin variety.

3 out of 5 stars Sensitive and expressionistic.......2002-12-11

Unlike Clara Rockmore's "The Art of the Theramin", this is an album written exclusively for the theramin instrument.

The theramin has great dynamic and soprano range. In some of the pieces, the theramin is set against a human soprano. To exhillarating effect.

The theramin presages the Moog synthesizer.

If you had ONE theramin album, it would not be this one.

Choose the Clara Rockmore version, instead.

5 out of 5 stars Theremin as an instrument, not a curiosity.......2002-04-30

This is a great album. I particularly like Lydia Kavina's original compositions, where the Theremin is clearly the ideal instrument.

Kavina's use of the Theremin is much more effective than Clara Rockmore's. While Rockmore's recordings show skill and ability, I cannot imagine anyone saying "yes, the Theremin is the ideal instrument" for the music on Rockmore's album. Speaking as an electronic musician who loves to explore the frontiers of music, I feel that under Rockmore the Theremin's appeal was more for its curiosity than for its appropriateness to the music.

With Lydia Kavina we have a different situation entirely. The music is ideal for the Theremin, and many of the compositions (particularly Kavina's) have real emotional power. I cannot imagine these pieces played with any other instrument (besides a synthesizer programmed to sound like a theremin).

Lydia Kavina is exploring a new musical space, appropriate to the Theremin. This album gives a fine sampling of that space, hopefully hinting at more to come.

Martinu, a truly underated, underappreciated, and underperformed composer whose genius probably won't come to light for another 50 years. These cello compositions are passionate as well as comical demonstrating compositional forms ranging from Theme and Variations to whatever came out of the composer's mind that day. The perfomers, truly masters of their instruments and interpretation. I highly recommend this recording, and furthermore all the recordings you can get your hands on by this amazing Czech master.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant achievement by a vastly under-rated pianist........1999-08-18

Eleonora Bekova brings all her experience in chamber and song recital work to produce a brilliant recording of these masterworks by Martinu. The Fantaisie et Toccata is demanding of technique and musical vision yet Bekova handles the dissonances and rapid musical developments to produce a reading which is a triumph of eloquence and cohesion. The eight preludes run the gamut of emotional intent yet Bekova handles the jazzy numbers one and two with as much innate sense of ragtime as she measures the dark depths of number five. The Sonata is handled with lyrical virtuosity (why isn't this piece in the mainstream piano repertoire?) and the three miniatures with which Bekova finishes this disk are utterly beautiful. Wow, what a pianist! Its no surprise that Martha Argerich says she is fantastic.

      5 out of 5 stars Lovely music.......2005-04-23

Wow! I really fell in love with this catching pieces... They are full of joy, emotional feelings and the sound of the piano is wonderful, indeed. Including Suk's Love Song, Janacek's Leaf, and Dvorak's Old castle, this CD have become my favourite...

      5 out of 5 stars Charming collection.......2005-04-14

This is a collections of less known, but beautiful pieces of Czech piano classics. If you are interested in Czech music or if you like piano miniatures you'll love it. However, this is magnificient performance with deep understanding of musical speech of Dvorak, Janacek, Fibich, Dussek and others... Antonin Kubalek at his artistic peak shows to everyody, that he is the leader in Czech piano interpretation.

      5 out of 5 stars Martinu's Concerto for Violin & Piano.......2000-08-04

Just happened to catch this piece on KDFC while driving home; and I had two immediate reactions: First, it had a beautiful melody; and second, it would make a wonderful music bed for a PBS Masterpiece Theater performance. I immediately ordered this CD and am hopeful that the rest is nearly as good as the Concerto for Violin & Piano.
