Customer Reviews:
Chopin a very unique pianist.......2007-07-21
Fryderyk Chopin was a concert pianist who created his own compositions. They are as sad as they are beautiful. This record allows the melancholy of the composer and pianist to really show. It is well recorded and seems to attempt to portray the artist music with it full intensity.
Chopin's Harmonies.......2007-07-12
I found this cd to be a great listening tool when working on Chopin's Preludes. The pianist is very sensitive to the Romantic musical style, allowing for a sense of understanding of some of the most difficult harmonies of the 19th century. Highly recommended!
Relaxation.......2007-07-12
This beautiful music was purchased for relaxation and it is perfect for that. I play it while reading or getting ready for sleep.
Bravo!.......2007-01-15
Sheer poetry. Barto slows down the slow preludes, much to their advantage, finding in them more beauty and meaning than you previously thought was there. Listening to them is like watching a rose open in slow motion. But to make this succeed as a cycle, and to maintain overall scale, he has to pull back on some of the faster pieces, to their minor disadvantage. A real winner!
Magnificent.......2006-12-05
I was unfamiliar with Tzimon Barto until introduced to his work by a new Amazon friend. I'm very grateful, indeed.
These Chopin preludes and nocturnes, to which I listened as a young woman on Vladimir Horowitz LPs, are extremely well executed here, with the additional advantage that the CD is available at an unbelievably low cost.
If you love Chopin, specifically, or classical compositions for piano in general, I can't recommend this recording highly enough.

Customer Reviews:
masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
My experience of this CD.......2007-04-04
My hats off to this CD collection! It was worth it!!! Chopin is a true genius for the piano, on this collection.
Beautiful!.......2006-08-18
This is a beautifully played collection of Chopin's work. It was a birthday gift,
and I listen to bits of it every day. I have yet to find a favorite
CD, as each is so lovely. It is well worth the price.
Well worth the money. Wonderful! Wonderful!.......2006-06-10
I am not a classical music expert but I am an expert when it comes to a great product. I have listened to the works of rubenstein and Horowitz, but nothing is comparable to this great collection of polands favorite son. The nocturnes are dreamy and romantic. The other pieces though not as mesmerizing have plenty of depth and feeling. This is a collection that you will listen to over and over again. Although this music is great anytime, it's especially meaningful during a light rainfall. Go ahead and make this investment. It's only $100.00. For the next 100 days save a dollar and you will have it paid for. I promise you won't be sorry. Excellent! Excellent!
Best investment to make.......2006-05-21
In my opinion, this is the apex of classical music. You will not find a better CD for Chopin or any piano recordings. There may be plenty of comparable CDs, but nothing can claim to surpass this.
Although some pieces are not as good as those by other artists, Ashkenazy's interpretations of Chopin are the best I've ever heard. Add in his amazing technical performance and you've got some sublime music.
Listening to these pieces have immensely helped my own Chopin reportoire. I don't play to mimic Ashkenazy, but I use his insights and apply my own style over that and end up with something exponentially better than what I could produce on my own.
The price is something you have to seriously consider. A hundred bucks. Yeah, that's a lot of money, but that's 48 cents per song. And you'll listen to these songs dozens of times, at least, I guarantee. Plus it's a great deal... if you were to get all the Ashkenazy-Chopin CDs available on Amazon, overlapping pieces as little as possible, you'd pay $30 more and still not have everything.
This is an investment for life and will definitely remain one of my favorite CD sets for decades. Decades. A hundred bucks for decades of amazing music. This stuff is larger than today, larger than life.. music this good is something you can't afford to pass up because of temporary financial difficulties.
A great pianist interpreting the most inspired composer ever !.......2005-09-15
Lets imagine that Chopin himself has recorded his own compositions in a perfectly clear CD. I am sure that some classical music reviewers would say "This is not the way Chopin is meant to be played". These classical music "pundits" are very intolerant.
Interpretation and emotion feeling is also a matter of taste, so that the only one who can give a final answer is Franois (Frederic).
Ashkenazy is gifted with a phenomenal technique, a great pianist. So that this collection is for sure 5 stars. Enjoy it.
Ah, if you like to see piano technique in action, listen to Georgy Cziffra's interpretation of Etude op. 10 no. 4. (Search the album in my reviews.)

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Customer Reviews:
One of Pollini's greatest early recordings.......2006-03-18
Pollini took time off after his spectacular early success to mature as a musician, and when he returned to concertizing around the time he made this classic recording of the 24 Preludes (1975), he had achieved a combinaiton of fire and ice, intelligence and passion, that has propelled his career ever since. These are eminently aristocratic readings, yet under the controlled surface one hears tantalizing hints of anger, melancholy, and ecstasy--Pollini's secret is to hold the entire Romantic arsenal at his command and then hide it from sight (making him the anti-Horowitz).
DG's sound is a bit wooden and boxy, which deprives us of the sensual quality of the piano. That's the only flaw to be found in this utterly mesmerizing recital. As other reviewers have pointed out, what sets this set of Preludes apart is that Pollini turns these miniatures into a single work that holds one's fascination from first to last.
The standard.......2005-09-22
I bought this recording in vinyl in the early 80s and am still astounded by Pollini's ability to make each prelude individual but still part of a complete opus. I later have bought recordings of this work by Argerich, Perahia, Lortie, Kissin, Ashkenazy, Alexeev, and Pires. All bring special qualities to this incredible work that stands as one of the peaks of piano compostition, but I have found no other recording that matches Pollini's intellectual control, his passion, or comprehensive technique. As a student of these works, I believe that this recording is the benchmark, a truly sublime reading of one of Chopin's most diverse and important works.
Chopin: 24 Preludes, Opus. 28.......2005-08-13
this is an excellent recording, I believe in l975, of Pollini.
Wonderful.......2005-03-17
Pollini is without a doubt one of the best pianists of the 20th century. Every performance on this CD is exemplary. You can really sense Pollini's emotions bursting out in the fifteenth and sixteenth preludes. Sound quality is very good. Highly recommended.
An underappreciated classic.......2004-03-24
Pollini's famous recordings of Chopin's 1st concerto and etudes are justly acclaimed, but this choice album is begging for reissue in the "Originals" series. Pollini masterfully plays these microcosmic works as a cycle with trademark technical assurance and in a warmer tone than the etudes album--there is no lack of delicacy in the F-sharp major and F major preludes, for instance. Riveting from the opening C major prelude to the cataclysmic D minor conclusion (a favorite encore of his), this remains my preferred version of this opus despite more-or-less competitive alternatives by Cortot, Argerich, Pogorelich, Moravec, Freire, Kissin, Sokolov, Arrau, Perahia, Rubinstein, and Ashkenazy.

Little attention to detail and nuance.......2007-04-01
I don't know why Argerich is so adored. Playing everything fast and loud doesn't constitute a great performance. I know the Chopin Preludes inside and out, and although Argerich has a nice intuition and a sense of passion, she pays little attention to the details and nuances that are so superb in Chopin. It seems that she was so eager to display technical mastery that the poetic sensibilities of the music are lost.
Absolutly wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-09
Is she agressive? Is she passionate? Is she out of this world? Yes, she is!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's what makes her different and unique!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder what are some customers trying to say when they say "Martha Argerich does not sound like Chopin". Of course she doesn't sound like Chopin, because she is creative, and most important, SHE IS NOOOT CHOPIN, SHE IS MARTHA ARGERICH.
The Preludes as a Lightning Bolt.......2005-04-17
Every pianist knows the Chopin Preludes, which stand even among his rich output as a cycle of unusually outstanding beauty, variety and mastery of chromaticism. They are played badly by so many novices, and indifferently by so many aspirants, that it is easy to make them sound stale. But Argerich's version has stood aside from all of that hubbub. It has been controversial since the beginning, with her most ardent admirers balanced by some equally militant detractors.
Is Argerich really defiling Chopin, as so many might suggest? I don't think so. Actually, I think that she succeeds brilliantly in making these pieces seem like just what they were in their time - groundbreaking.
Chopin experienced the thrill of treading into unknown waters, exploring obscure and uncharted parts of the human psyche, and bringing it all up to the surface with the utmost concision. I cannot imagine how proud Chopin must have felt to have produced such a creation from his own pen. And it is extreme music - extremely rich, extremely stark, extremely happy, extremely sad, extremely advanced, extremely conservative. To Chopin's contemporaries, they seemed to come from nowhere, like a bolt of lightning. A soundscape as blindingly intense as the F-sharp minor Prelude still seems more like the music of another planet (to borrow a comment from Arrau about Debussy). Is it not appropriate, then, for Argerich to play them with the appropriate extremes of volume, of tempo, of warmth and coolness?
Yes, I'm biased. Yes, there are some wrong notes in the B-flat minor Prelude (which certainly don't detract from the seemingly infinite power displayed) and there a few other places where newer editions, the Jan Ekier in particular, have made Chopin's intentions more clear. But the combination of burning, passionate music and burning, passionate pianist is unmatched. When it stops thrilling me, then I'll know I'm dead.
Lixo total.......2004-12-15
Imagine um Chopin onde só o virtuosismo e a "destruição" do teclado é a constante. Im agine um Chopin agressivo e desprovido quase totalmente de rubatos.Francamente, acho que Argerich não tinha a intenção de tocar Chopin.
Sound quality and performance.......2004-09-24
Other reviews here more or less sum up this performance. It is emotive and 'fiery' in its interpretation. It is really a personal matter whether you prefer this or a more laid back approach. The recording has some low level hiss.

Amazon.com essential recording
Chopin may have distrusted romanticism, yet no other romantic composer has worn as well. His music both stings and sings with harmonic adventurousness, together with an uncanny instinct for the geography of the keyboard. The Op. 28 Préludes exemplify Chopin's genius for telegraphing big ideas into snug spaces, while his Études provide an index to his pianistic idiom. Pollini fares best in the Préludes, where his aristocratic pacing and cool control allow the music's mood swings to speak for themselves. The Études glitter with icy accuracy, but the Polonaises lack Rubinstein's rhythmic snap and generosity of spirit. Still, Pollini's unruffled pianism remains the envy of every conservatory student and competition aspirant. DG's analog sonics are fully competitive. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Impecable!.......2005-11-09
Pollini's interpretation and execution of the 24 etudes is superb, as are his polanaises. His preludes however, no.19 especially, I feel, have a touch of delicacy which it could do without. Where marked 'vivace' it is played closer to 'presto'. Apart from this however it is a first class performance, and fully worthy of the 5 stars I have given it.

Superb Playing.......2005-08-24
While sometimes a little faster than generally performed (as my teacher put it "because he can!") Pollini exeplifies near flawless technique with wonderful interpretation of Chopin. The only complaint I personally have, is that the playing seems a bit technical, and not as much emotion is put into the actual peices. Though Etudes are not generally known for their musicality, Pollini, I feel, could still be afford a little more push/pull in some of the selections.
Pollini does bring a new freshness to the set of preludes. Overplayed and sometimes butchered by the amateur pianist, Pollini peroforms these preludes masterfully and brings them to a level that I've rarely heard.
Other than my minor complaint, I feel that for any student or teacher willing to complete, add or update their library this is a great choice. Pollini delivers a crystal clear performance, worthy of any listener. Easily one of my favorite recordings in my collection!
Really extraordinary performance of the Preludes and Etudes!.......2005-02-25
It takes a very great artist to be able to play pieces which have been overperformed and overtaught, and bring something fresh to the table. Pollini does just that, especially in his performances of the Preludes and Etudes.
I would love to take a poll of the pianists and piano teachers here to see how many times they have taught the Chopin Preludes. From my own experience, I've taught these pieces so many times that I find myself dreading teaching #4 (e minor), #6 (b minor), #7 (A Major) or #20 (c minor) -- and I think we forget that these pieces are actual music and NOT "teaching pieces".
Pollini succeeds in taking these over-played pieces and transforming them back into "music". It's really nothing short of amazing. As I listened, I began noticing secondary melodies I'd never heard, particularly in #5 (D Major), #13 (F-Sharp Major), and #14 (e-flat minor). The F-Sharp Major Prelude is particularly gorgeous -- almost heart-rendingly so in the middle section. The g-sharp minor Prelude has exactly the right sense of fire and drive to bring this piece across; the A-Flat Major, E-Flat Major and F Major Preludes are nothing short of ravishing.
I bought this CD collection on suggestion of a friend of mine (also a pianist) who has experienced the same kind of burn-out I have with Chopin pieces which are over-taught and over-played, and/or over-interpreted to the point where the pieces become parodies of themselves. (I never heard so much bad, truly affected Chopin playing as I did at the school where I initially trained as a pianist!).
Pollini's Chopin is a real breath of fresh air -- restrained, elegantly timed rubatos; enough pedal to effect tonal coloring without the overpedalling so common in so many Chopin performances; a sense of drama in the playing combined with an edge of restraint so the pieces are never "over-played"; and he has an uncanny ability to convey a strong sense of structure to these pieces.
I can say quite honestly that the performances of the Preludes and Etudes on this CD have the force of a revelation. The proof of this is that after hearing the CD (many times), I have decided to learn all 24 Preludes (plus the C-Sharp Minor Prelude, op. 45) and play them all in a recital.
The Polonaises aren't quite as spellbinding as the Preludes and as riveting as the Etudes; but the Preludes and Etudes make this a compelling collection. I strongly and enthusiastically recommend this CD compilation!
About the Etudes.......2001-02-14
This album may be the best Chopin package on the market, especially given the bargain price. That said, an out-of-print CD featuring a young Vladimir Ashkenazy, recorded in Moscow in 1959/60, would be an even better choice (with respect to the Etudes) should it ever again become available. In that legendary recording, Ashkenazy's technique - especially in Op. 25, No. 6 - sends chills down the spine, and he infuses more life into the music than does Pollini. The Ashkenazy of that vintage should not be confused with his older ghost, currently available on the London/Decca label.
What Pollini offers here are whistle-clean performances of (some of) Chopin's major solo works. Pollini's approach, if somewhat clinical, is refreshing for its lack of affectation or excess. He does not belabor the music as many other Chopin performers are inclined to do, and he plays with solid technique throughout.
This Music Doesn't Need A Title.......2001-02-09
I really like this CD because (1) I am a big Chopin fan, and (2) I know these pieces well. Chopin's good point is his romanticism. The tracks on this CD are full of his deep, pasionate feeling for his native Poland, even though he was half French and lived outside Poland in such places as Majorca. He was the archetype of the romantic exile, and did his best to live up to this image by writing appropriately evocative music.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2006-05-03
Ohlsson is so technically gifted. Yet, he keeps himself under control with his really beautiful rendition of these most gentle of Chopin's work. He doesn't fool around with tempos either, as so many other pianists (Pollini et. al.) tend to do with Chopin to bring out the emotion. Ohlsson realizes that the work of Chopin is inherently emotional enough as it is, and needs no help. He just plays in a straighforward workman-like manner. As they say: "Play Mozart like Chopin, and Chopin like Mozart". That's what he does, and the effect is mesmerizing.
Having said that he plays in a straightforward manner ... what's with that little flourish in the 15th Prelude? I don't know that it's written that way, but it sounds good nevertheless.
A great record -- beautiful performances of dreamy compositions. You can't go wrong with this one.

Customer Reviews:
Try Ivo Pogerlich to Catch the Spirit of the Preludes.......2006-04-25
Kissin sounds as if he is in a rush.
Incidentally, this haste is not necessarily related to speed per se.
Pogorelich plays each Prelude at about the same nominal time, but he brings out a depth and lyricism lacking in this recording which may say more about Kissin's inner torment than about the message of the pieces.
Comparing the two is as if we were to juxtapose a mature master with an impatiant child.
See for instance the stark disparity in nuance in comparing Preludes no. 8, 16, 24 and of course 4 played by Pogorelich and Kissin respectively.
It goes without saying that Evgeny Kissin is a true prodigy and virtuoso who has brought us much joy (and for this we must be grateful), but here he misses the message.
Ivo Pogorelich and Claudio Arrau have captured the soul of Chopin in its tragic, true beauty. They have surrendered themselves to it in utter, complete devotion.

Great Artist, Great Performance.......2006-02-20
Kissin is clearly one of the best pianists, perhaps the very best, to come along in recent years. He deserves the sobriquet, "the new Horowitz" although he is unique in his own right. His facility with the preludes is inspiring. However, I like a piano that has a mellower sound than the one on this recording. In some instances this one seemed a little too brilliant or lacking in overtones so as to detract a bit from the enjoyment of listening to this wonderful artist. Regardless, I'm happy to own this recording.
Turning the Chopin 2nd Sonata into the "Appassionata".......2005-11-08
In their different ways, both Pollini and Kissin play Chopin's big works, like the Second Sonata, as if they were Beethoven. On this CD Kissin enlarges the frame of the sonata to fit the Appassionata--and I excitedly went along. Carpers should remember that Horowitz distorted Chopin far more than Kissin ever could. RCA's inside-the-lid piano sound is unrealistic but adds to the thrill. Passage work like this can be heard only once in a lifetime. Five stars.
But the Preludes are another story. The world was once entirely on Kissin's side. Ten years ago he was considered an insightful, sympathetic Chopin interpreter who had a marvelous sense of touch to go with his world-dominating technique. (The evidence of his instinctive gifts is there from a Tokyo recital on Sony, made when Kissin was fifteen.) I don't hear that inspired interpreter in these Preludes, which despite dazzling moments are ham-handed and coarse. No more than anyone else do I know the reason for this change. We will have to hope that this adored artist steps back from the precipice of showmanship and begins to play with his heart once again. Three stars.
Exciting pianism........2005-01-20
This third Kissen Chopin recital to be issued certainly provides some exciting pianism. It is hard to imagine how ten fingers can be coordinated to produce the rippling effects in Prelude 3, the whirlwinds in Prelude 8, the headlong galloping in Prelude 16, and the terrifying swirl of sound in the Sonatas's finale. It is also hard to imagine how much one would need to pay in order to sit in such close proximity to the piano as it is recorded here. Never have I heard the three repeated notes at the bottom end of the keyboard sound as powerful as they do at the close of Prelude 24.
Chopin offers much more than opportunities for technical display, however, and few of these additional components are evident here. The tears below the surface of Prelude 4 are disregarded, the cantilena of Prelude 6 is more mechanical than vocal, and the Sonata's Scherzo is rushed rather than refined. Most successful is the Sonata's "Funeral March" - something I thought I never wanted to hear again. Perhaps the enforced slow tempo allows Chopin's voice to come through.
The engineers have captured the tension and excitement of Kissen's performances, but I am not sure that he has captured the essential refinement and eminently patrician qualities that typify Chopin's music.

Great!
I have never heard such "Finale.Presto" from his "Funeral Sonata"!! It's hallucinatory voyage through what is unknown for human beings. Amazing use of pedal and surpriseing tecnique, creating spectral, nightmare-like vision of the "after death". Amazing, really amazing! Kissin (and Chopin above all) express the inexpressible.
