Prokofiev: Cinderella; "Classical" Symphony
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Cinderella is the second of Prokofiev's three great ballets, falling between Romeo and Juliet and The Stone Flower. It's a more acerbic, sharply pointed score than the lushly Romantic Romeo, and it's many numbers are correspondingly shorter. There's also a lot less repetition, making the complete ballet a more highly varied listening experience. Some of the scenes are literally fantastic, not least the famous "clock" sequence, when midnight strikes at the Prince's ball to what sounds like bombs detonating. Otherwise the music ranges from Cinderella's own soulful, lyrical themes to the biting parody that characterizes her two ugly stepsisters. André Previn's performance is very enjoyable. --David Hurwitz

Face it, anyone who can play Horowitz's fabled transcriptions or Cziffra's madcap interlocking octaves Flight of the Bumblebee will get attention. What is most impressive, though, is that Arcadi Volodos replicates the notes, but not the performances. His tempos and voicings are completely different, and just as valid, if not quite as coruscating as the originals. In other words, Volodos makes this repertoire his own, as well as the other selections on this well-recorded debut outing. --Jed Distler

Volodos.......2007-06-08
The piano transcriptions are fantastic.
Volodos proves that he's a real genious and one of the best in the world today.
Warning: Saddening waste of technical gifts .......2007-02-06
I do not want to take away the pleasure of the many reviewers who have found this item a thrilling enjoyment. Only I want to issue a warning to all lovers of the art of the piano: Do not buy this album in the hope of hearing a worthy successor to such past Russian titans as Richter and Gilels! Volodos is easily their master in terms of blistering dexterity, power of attack and distinct arpeggios. Yet, in all other respects he is dwarfed by comparison. His playing, all in all, is egocentric, crude in terms of its conventionality of expression and bereft of the humour that might have made his incredibly overloaded arrangements truly delightful. Now, they are at most decent circus acts, leaving one to wonder how one man with only two hands can plays this fast and how that very same man can take such a hamfisted approach to his slap-stick repertoire.
With an orchestra Volodos most often plays as if he cannot hear the other musicians through the noise he is making. On his own he fares slightly better. Still, he seems to be more in the service of technical boasting than musical expression. To take two examples:
1. His "Bumblebee" clocks in at a mindboggling 1.36 sharp. That's about all that recommends it. In musical terms, the performance is absurd: This witty piece is meant to portray an amiably buzzing furball, NOT an angry wasp on steroids.
2. Many performers have been tempted to beef up Mozart's somewhat monotone K331 "Turkish March". Volodos' paraphrase goes over the top with nifty counterpoint coupled with all sorts of tricks from the virtuoso shelf. This could have been a true delight if the performer had only loosened up a little and offered the occasional comic relief that such an encore so obviosuly calls for. Here Volodos simply seems oblivious to the inherent potential for musical expression. On a repeated listening the performance tires by its utter conventionality of phrasing.
Praised be the day when Volodos opens up his ears to the music he is performing. Then we might hope for new reference recordings of various works in the superdifficult division. Until then we may only grieve that such supernatural technique is going to waste in sideshow idleness. If you crave for a contemporary Russian virtuoso, try out Nikolai Lugansky, even if his somewhat austere taste in the romantic repertoire might deter some fans of Horowitz et al. Lugansky is in supernatural technical command if the keyboard, yet never leaves you in doubt that you are listening to a true musician.
superlatives fail.......2006-10-22
Volodos is simply one of the greatest pianists I have ever heard. The transcriptions on this CD are well worth your investment. I was fortunate to hear Volodos at Lincoln Center play the finger-bending Prokofiev 2nd piano concerto. I am a professionally trained pianist, and I have simply never heard a performance to equal it. I was convinced two or more people were playing. The emotional power was overwhelming. I wish he would record it. And the complete Transcendantal Etudes.
Mind-shatteringly superb.......2006-08-08
Volodos strikes us with some incredible works here, friends. These are quite simply some of the most perfectly executed works upon the piano I have heard, and this is no light affair considering the depression-inducing difficulty of some of these behemoths of the piano (Horowitz transcription of the Hungarian Rhapsody sounds like it requires a virtuoso of the highest order to play well.) We're dealing with a pianistic genius who I'm sure will continue to astound us in the future. And what, he began studying at the age of sixteen!? I want him to record all the Transcendental Etudes, but who knows if that will ever occur. Check out his Rachmaninoff concerto as well, it's about as close to perfect as it gets.
Unbelievable.
S-P-E-C-T-A-C-U-L-A-R.......2006-03-05
Ladies and Gentlemen, what we have here is quite possibly the greatest piano virtuoso alive today. While the musicality and emotion the artist puts in his work are exeptional, but not without precedence, his virtuosity, technique and rapidity of execution are quite simply...GOD-GIVEN. Period. End of statement.

Delightful Disney Music.......2007-03-28
These Disney tunes done in the style of classic composers are so much fun. Children and adults alike will enjoy these songs over and over.
Uncle Walt would be quite honored!.......2006-12-20
For many a baby boomer, Walt Disney meant animation. But, besides that, music played an important part in the telling of the story. So interested in music was the animator that he fashioned one of his greatest triumphs ("Fantasia") on the works of the great masters.
Well, Donald Frasier and a bevy of musicians have compiled a wonderful collection of interpretations of familiar Disney tunes, many from Walt's time, along with a few latter day compositions.
Every selection is a winner, destined to make the listener reflect and recall the films from which they came. And if one is familiar with composer whose musical style is "copied" here, the album is a treasure.
Fabulous CD.......2006-10-04
Being a classical music connoisseur, I often listen to my local public classical radio station to hear the works of the great composers of old and of today. One day the station played "Colors of the Wind" and announced it was from this CD. I fell in love with it. I am a huge Disney fan who has over 350 Disney songs on my iPod. Pretty much the only music I listen to is either classical or Disney. And having them combined makes this CD euphoria for the ears.
Each song is in the style of a different classical composer, and usually in the style of one of their more specific songs. One with a trained ear will hear chords and melodies in almost perfect similitude of the original.
I can listen to this CD over and over and never get bored. How could you be bored when you're hearing all of your favorite old Disney songs in a new exciting way?
sleeping to Disney.......2006-07-30
I am really pleased that there is a classical music cd that has only Disney classics so that I can play them for my infant daughter while she sleeps. We are big Disney fans and it's fun to play these instead of the regular classical music. They sound just like the original songs. I would have given 5 stars but I wish they would have had all instrumental music, one of the songs has a choir singing, but it still sound good.
this is a treasure.......2003-05-11
Disney music is always uplifting. Classical music is beautiful. Combine the two - and you get THIS! "Colors of the Wind" is glorious, followed by the enchanting title track. "Beauty and the Beast" is true to the romance of the original. "The Second Star to the Right" is magical. Everything is awesome - and flawless. I initially bought this because I love The Main Street Electrical Parade music, and that is definiely a highlight here - but so are ALL the other songs! This is GOOD STUFF! It is so excellent that it can be a very beneficial introduction to classical music - for kids AND adults.

Back to when I believed in fairy tales...........2002-09-30
If you could, just for a moment, return to the days when fairy godmothers were real, when you really could turn four white mice into four white horses - then just buy this CD for a few smiles, a lot of memories, and the original Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes. This CD took me way back to when magic was there, and now it makes me wonder, everytime I listen to it, if maybe the magic isn't still there? Maybe I should just call on my fairy godmother..... A true heirloom of a CD.
The Glass Slipper Fits!.......2001-04-21
This is an excellent compilation of songs that express the longings, fears and exuberance of the Cinderella story. Rather than just relying of the romantic side of the myth, producer Bruce Kimmel adds depth to the story by including songs from The Slipper and The Rose and Sondheim's Into the Woods as well as the Disney and Roger & Hammerstein Cinderella versions.
When Susan Egan plans her strategy in "Promise Him Anything" and Pamela Winslow expresses her fear in "On the Steps of the Palace," the listener becomes aware of Cinderella's human side. Likewise, when Christa Moore shares her fantasy world "In My Own Corner" and Christina Noll expresses her thrill of her dream coming true in "Impossible/Suddenly It Happens," the listener is reminded of the powerful message of Cinderella's theme: dreams DO come true.
Fortunately, the compilation does not exclude humor as well. "The Stepsister's Lament" by Farah Alvin and Alet Oury is hilariously poignant; the lyrics "Why would a fellow want a girl like her? A frail and frocky beauty!" could be the alltime wallflowers' lament. And Jonathan Freeman's "What Has Love Got to Do with Getting Married?" is a droll piece of practical cynicism to his Prince son. (The song reminds me of the film Moonstruck. When Olympia DuKakis asks her daughter Cher, "Do you love him?" When Cher answered affirmatively, her mother muttered, "That's bad.")
Also, the musical bridges add to the suspense of the Cinderella story. "Midnight", "The Ball," and "If The Shoe Fits" from Prokofiev's ballet are beautifully orchestrated and remind the listener that the Cinderella myth is adaptable for many forms of entertainment.
I was a little disappointed that "So This is Love" and "The Work Song" was not included, but I guess I'm partial to the Disney version. The 1950 cartoon was my first introduction to Cinderella, and to my delight, my nephew enjoyed it as well thirty years later.
Nevertheless, this CD shows the timeless appeal of the Cinderella myth. Its beauty, humor and suspense is contained here in this magnificent collection.
Magical collection fit for a princess!.......1999-04-13
I was thrilled to come across this collection. One of my favorite movies, The Slipper and the Rose, had been out of print for many years. This CD includes 4 of the songs from that movie and though not by the original artists, just as good. The songs range from the whimsical to the romantic to a few comic gems, all from various stage and film Cinderella scores. "Tell Him Anything" from the Slipper and the Rose, a powerful song filled with longing and despair is sung movingly by Susan Egan, a nice change of pace from the cheerier, more sparkling numbers.
The score from Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is so charming and catchy it's fun to hear it again by new artists. The performers, all apparently Broadway singers (?), are all beautifully performed with exuberance and style. The orchestration is lush and appropriate to the material.
Fabuloso!!!! A must have!!!!.......1998-08-11
This is an AWESOME cd. It has songs from the original Rodgers and Hammerstein version, the Disney version, and Into the Woods. This is a faboulos collection of songs. Definetly buy it. NOW!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
For all its faults it's still better than..........2007-01-19
At this time there is 1 previous review of the CD and 6 reviews of the DVD (also EmpireMusic). The review of the CD seems to be about the music and not the performance. For those who already know and love the music, I recommend you get this CD. The conductor identified on the DVD credits is Victor Fedotov conducting the Bolshoi Theatre SO in a live performance from 1985. This is probably correct. The ballet is cut to 34 scenes (from 50 in total). The cuts appear to be the Bolshoi's decision. I believe that the 'complete' Cinderella (which is unlikely to be performed anywhere, anytime) is too long and too repetitive and (sometimes) too dull. Unlike Romeo et Juliette, it is easy to find scenes to cut in Cinderella. My complaint is not the cuts here but that Empire could not manage 79 minutes on 1 CD. More importantly, the sound (PCM here, Dolby on DVD--apparently from the same tapes) has warp and woof problems (those raised in the digital era will not know what this means) and the level of the right channel is noticeably higher than the left (especially if listening on headphones). Now why do I take the time for these complaints? Because this is the best you can do for Cinderella at this time. For all of those who think Romeo is the great ballet and Cinderella is a weak sister, you need to hear these Russians play it. Take the 'midnight' scene where Previn's English horns seem totally virginal and then listen to Fedotov. OK, so Pletnev is Russian, right? He should know how it's done; and everyone says the sound (with DG's 12 or 13 microphones) is world-class. Pletnev does know how it should sound, and he certainly loves Cinderella. But that does not change the fact that (in the words of one reviewer) his Cinderella is 'charmless and cold'. That's what it is. So, until Naxos see fit to let Yablonski or Mogrelia record this....
Cinderella, a disappointment.......2007-01-10
Hoping to be able to find some danceable music for my students, I found that Cinderella does not have easily transferable music. It works well for the original choreography but I did not find the music enjoyable or danceable.

Customer Reviews:
This collection focuses more on Prokofiev's ballet works.......2001-08-12
I found it quite interesting that the two main CD collections featuring the assorted works of Sergei Prokofiev have so little overlap. Outside of key works like the March from "The Love for Three Oranges" and excerpts from his Classical Symphony in D Major, the two collections go in opposite directions. This particular collection emphasizes "Romeo and Juliet" and "Cinderella," while completely ignoring "Peter and the Wolf." What I like most about this one is that it has an excerpt from Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto, which is the one the Amy Irving character plays in "The Competition." Consequently, this is one of the few times when you do not really have to choose between two competing "hits" collections, you can simply pick them both up. The "Best of Prokofiev" might be the one I would recommend picking up second, but it will still be a worthwhile addition to your classical music collection.

A Beauty.......2006-01-05
While an appearance of both Argerich and Pletnev in the ten pianist "piano extravaganza", in which Lang -the I have no clue what I'm doing clown on the 88- Lang lived up to its expectation, did not set my expectations very high for a duo disc, this recording showed the danger of preconceived notions.
This is a truly great recording. Probably the best piano duo recording since the end of the Kontarsky Duo in the early 1980's.
Both the Prokoviev and the Ravel are superbly idiomatic and deserve a simple 10 out of 10. The duo playing is exemplary and this Mother Goose dwarfs earlier versions of Argerich in various duo combinations. The instruments are impeccable and so is the recording.
In all, a beautiful cd. I hope that more will follow from this eminent duo.
Argerich and Pletnev Play Prokofiev and Ravel: Splendid Results!.......2005-09-13
That Martha Argerich and Mikail Pletnev are two of our finest pianists today goes without saying. When they play together, the result is magic. Few pianists can perform works for two pianos or one piano four hands with the kind of graceful aplomb and energy as these two - and make it sound like an afternoon soirée in their studio!
Mikhail Pletnev created this two piano transcription of movements from Prokofiev's ballet "Cinderella" and wisely elected to reference Prokofiev's own keyboard transcription as well as the orchestral score. The resulting work, dedicated to his friend Martha Argerich, is a witty, dreamy, multicolored pianistic synopsis of the ballet. Pletnev and Argerich perform with their usual panache and the keyboard has never sounded so rich!
In addition to this important Prokofiev two piano transcription the two artists join in Ravel's keyboard version of ' Ma mère l'oye' and they move into the world of Ravel with the same respect as for the Prokofiev. There are nuances here that at times are covered by Ravel's own brilliant orchestration and spending time with this delightful score is sure to enhance the listener's respect for the concert hall orchestral 'Ma mère l'oye'. Recommended without reservation. Grady Harp, September 05
Astounding!.......2005-06-26
I don't like throwing around words like "astounding", so when I say it, I mean it. The arrangement of the Cinderalla Suite, the performances and the recording all contribute to making this a most remarkable cd. You will not hear greater virtuosity anywhere.
Mesmerizing Virtuosity.......2005-02-06
This is ravishingly beautiful and fascinating. Pletnev wrote this 2 Piano version of the Prokofiev Cinderella Ballet for Argerich and dedicated it to her. I cannot stop listening to it. Don't deprive yourself of this.

Brilliant Recording and Amazing Music!!!.......2007-06-27
Prokofiev is very well known for his Romeo and Juliet ballet, however, IMO his Cinderella ballet featured on this 2-CD set is EVEN BETTER!!!
As some other reviewers noted, this is relatively dark music --- not outright dissonant for the most part, but consists of mainly minor-key music and atonal sections with the occasional major-key section thrown in when the story calls for it. Prokofiev wrote this ballet right after finishing Romeo and Juliet, and IMO he improved a great deal from his first ballet. The themes and leitmotifs are catchier, the dark music is more refined, and the overall cohesiveness of the story-put-to-music is maintained better---it is very easy to imagine the story in your mind as you listen to the music.
I absolutely love it --- on the first listen, there so many great surprises (especially the infamous Clock melody --- that melody has been stuck in my head for weeks and has prevented me from falling asleep quickly on several occasions!) The ballet is chock full of catchy, mysterious, wonderful themes and counter-melodies, and brilliant playful sections and dark waltzes --- to top it all off, this orchestral recording in particular captures the essence of the story's mood perfectly.
Glazunov's Seasons is also a magnificent "filler" addition to this 2-CD set --- I've heard a # of reviewers mention CDs that they would like to be stranded with on a desert island. This one certainly has jumped very quickly to the top of my list --- I can't stop listening to it.
I highly encourage you to pick this up and discover the magic of Prokofiev's lesser-known ballet. Fans of Stravinsky's Firebird ballet are particularly encouraged.
Beautiful Dark Music.......2004-06-06
If you liked Danny Elfman soundtracks for "Batman" and "Edward Scissorhands, you'll love this. This music is really dark, particularly the "Great Waltz", which could easily fit in an Addam's family dance sequence. Even darker than "Danse macabre" from Saint-Saens.
Those of you that prefer lighter, "fun" classical music, better search for Mozart. Just like Pink Floyd's dark, long pieces, this music is for those who have reached a higher level of consciousness. If you haven't, first buy Betty Edward's book "Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain". Kidding!. Now, seriously, This is no music for a party. This is for those who prefer to be alone.
Excellent recording.......2000-12-03
Excellent recording. Along with the Previn/LSO version on EMI, this is one of two great recordings of "Cinderella." However, the "filler" here is more gratifying than the one provided on Previn disks (Prokofiev's Classical Symphony). Nonetheless, both recordings are excellent. No need to go to other more expensive yet less satisfying versions.
Great Music!.......2000-10-16
The music Prokofiev wrote for this ballet is great! It's so interesting and great to listen too. And also, there are the Seasons by Glazunov. I think they are better than Vivaldi's Seasons. This cd is a great value and great to listen too.
Wonderful.......2000-06-14
This is an unbelievably wonderful recording of Prokofiev's ballet `Cinderella.' It is far better than Andre Previn's recording with the London Symphony. The Cleveland Orchestra plays with unparalleled precision and flexibility providing Ashkenazy with the ideal vehicle for presenting his excellent interpretation. The recording quality is fabulous. In addition, Glazunov's `The Seasons' provides an interesting filler for the end of the second CD.

Just amazing.......2001-08-08
This album I got at Disneyland Paris. I saw it and just knew that I had to have it. It's classic disney tunes in the style of the great composers. And it really do remind of them. As a lover of classic music and disney music, this couldn't be a better album.
A Disney Classic!.......2000-03-09
This cd is a great introduction for little ones into the world of classical music. My children ages 6 and 4 have "worn out" their first copy of this lively cd. If you enjoy disney music, this is a must for your children's music library.

Let's go to the ball and have a nice nap.......2006-07-16
In the Sixties when I first heard Stokowski's riveting suite from Prokofiev's Cinderella, I was eager to hear the whole ballet. The first complete version that emerged here was this one from Previn and the London Sym., who were then in their Seventies honeymoon phase.
But I was disappointed--there's too much careful conducting, not enough mystery and drama, and little magic. The LSO plays beautifully, and EMI's recording, if not exactly dynamic, is fine. Later I acquired the version from Ashkenazy on Decca, which is both more exciting and better recorded. Since then we've had a so-so reading from Pletnev on DG, but after forty years, I'm still waiting for the complete set that recaptures the whimsy and enchantment of Stokowski's excepts (you can still find them and hear for yourself.)

Customer Reviews:
Amazing Symphony, Great Performance.......2006-05-26
I prefer to see this piece in the following arc: 2,3,6. 1 is a fascinating experiment, and a great piece, 4 and 5 are from the Prokofiev's melancholic side, where the caustic, orgiastic interludes are absent. 6 is a kind of last glance into that abyss, this time sounding a bit more like a controlled explosion: the crescendo of the first movement is a final fix for those who rank Prokofiev with the greatest oracles of lyrical chaos.
The other thing that no one else mentions here are the waltzes. They are fantastic, amazing, and of all the suites in the Jarvi cycle, these three are the best. A great disc, but get the whole set (although the boxed cycle does not have the extras (waltzes and suites, and the fantastic collection of oddball pieces on the Dreams disc).
Indulgent, Dark, and Satisfying.......2005-12-22
This is the first Prokofiev Symphony I ever fell in love with. My twin brother bought this recording when we were still in high school. It is a wonder of strong dark brassy chords, long indulgent melodic lines that seem to wrap around themselves and powerful atmospheric writing. The playing by the RSNO is absolutely beautiful. It is no wonder that this recording was a Gramophone award winner.
Symphony No. 6 is amongst Prokofiev's finest works and is vastly underrated. I recommend this recording without reservation.
Prokofiev's Greatest.......2005-12-17
The Sixth is simply head, shoulders and torso above any of the others, and why it has been so neglected is inexplicable.
Great performance. Great recording.
Not to be missed.
You should know this piece.......2004-12-12
The symphony is greatly overshadowed by the first and fifth. It shouldn't be. It's an outstanding work that showcases Prokofiev's brilliant bipolar composition style (lyrical and romantic to angular and grotesque)while really having something important to say. Jaarvi does a great job here. He gets the Russians.
