Bax: Symphony No. 6; Festival Overture

Editorial Reviews

The two works an this disc bracket Arnold Bax's long career. Festival Overture is a 1912 composition, full of student brio and slapdash energy; yet nowhere in the 15-minute piece is a nod given to the composers of Elgar's era. Bax's music was always aimed at the 20th century. The merits of Bax's Sixth Symphony (1935) come in his skillful weaving of divergent themes that unite in a wonderful--and wonderfully complex--final movement. Bax's symphonies have often been called "extended" tone poems. But so what? Their complexity and shifting textures still cohere and still delight. --Paul Cook

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful stuff........2005-05-31

Chandos has been loyal to Bax's cause. 2 symphony cycles have been recorded. This one, from the 1980's, still sounds superb. Bax' symphonies can be rhapsodic and somewhat amorphous, but the music conveys northern vistas and landscapes that one always wants to revisit. Worthwhile.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat Confusing Symphony.......2002-01-13

No problem with the performace or the recording. It's just that the symphony does not seem to work. It never seems to find its rhythm like the Bax No. 3 and No. 4. The movements all seem like separate pieces. I could not figure out what the composer was doing. I would avoid this one unless you really like Bax.
