Daniel Hope

Editorial Reviews

Daniel Hope and Simon Mulligan are outstanding young talents whose earlier Nimbus recording of Shostakovitch's violin sonata earned well-deserved plaudits. Here, they turn to a pair of 20th-century English works with equal success. The Elgar, written in the wake of World War I's devastation, has a bold Allegro first movement and an expansive final movement flanking an expressive "Romance." It's top-drawer Elgar, and as played by these vibrant musicians, there's not a whiff of the Edwardian pomposity some associate with this composer. Hope's slashing attacks, wide dynamics, and intensity are matched by Mulligan's sensitive pianism. The Walton Sonata, another fascinating work, is played with wonderful spontaneity. It's a work of strong contrasts, and Hope sustains Walton's deeply felt slow sections with concentration, while giving the faster sections the zip and panache they need. Finzi's Elegy, largely pastoral in mood, makes for a nice interlude between the two big works. --Dan Davis

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-31

If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

3 out of 5 stars It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

4 out of 5 stars Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-10-23

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

4 out of 5 stars just a warning..........2005-10-14

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

Technically a very clean album. It has a good selection of tunes, particularly for the history buff, however some of the polished choral pieces sound funny when you think that most of them are essentially folk tunes that should be sung with a somewhat less practiced air. Overall, worth the purchase for historical value and good production.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music from the Birth of Our Nation.......2002-02-02

A great collection of music from 18th century America.

If you enjoy fifes and drums, choral compositions, patriotic songs, and uplifting music from the birth of America, please get this CD.

A perfect selection for a patriotic American to play, especially on the 4th of July.

5 out of 5 stars Protest Songs of the 1770s.......2002-01-24

The music that was composed and performed during the American Revolution is presented on this 1 hour CD. Since I was a child, I've enjoyed hearing the drum and fife corps on the Fourth of July and during the Presidential inaugurations, and this CD has several good drum and fife marches. Other selections are 18th century protest songs about taxation ("A taxing we will go...} and British tyranny. There are also some good harpsichord numbers contained on this CD. The musicians are excellent and the sound is clear. I don't know how many common people got to hear music like this during the Revolution, but at least this CD gives the 21st Century listener the opportunity enjoy the "popular" music of 200 years ago. Classical music lovers will enjoy this CD too.

4 out of 5 stars Important work of musical heritage.......1999-02-25

I fell in love with this CD from the first track. The music of the American Fife Ensamble is stirring, I felt positivly rebelious. The satarical songs based on the tunes "British Grenadires" and "Hearts of Oak" are like the paintings of W. Hogarth set to music. You should have more than a cursory knowledge of the 18th century though, to fully enjoy this CD

5 out of 5 stars A good source of enjoyment and education.......1999-02-23

We will never know exactly how these songs sounded when the citizens of Boston were darting black looks to the British regulars on the streets, but I would wager quite a bit that these renditions come pretty close. Of course the "American" accents are an anachronism; but most listeners might be puzzled to hear British accents used for these anti-British songs (with one exception, composed by a British regular!)I have already used selections from this CD to a groups of 3rd and 5th graders and they loved it. So teachers, take note, but be sure they have the words in front of them. A very valuable educational tool that also happens to be a very enjoyable program to hear for its own sake. And as with most New World releases, the annotations alone are worth the price of the product.

Daniel Hope is an excellent violinist, very much in tune with today's tastes and fashions, as reflected in his remarkably swift rise to prominence. His technical mastery lets him exploit all the resources of his instrument; his adventurousness leads him to explore the music of many lands. However, the multifarious colors of his tonal palette threaten to overwhelm the music and become an end in themselves; to prove his stylistic versatility, he resorts to excess and exaggeration. Yet on this recording, which features works influenced by folk-music and inviting an improvisatory approach, his playing is strangely unspontaneous, planned, and unimaginative. The program is flanked by two ragas by Ravi Shankar, accompanied by Indian instruments, carefully reconstructed from recordings of Yehudi Menuhin, for whom they were written and with whom Hope was closely associated. They sound beautiful and thoroughly authentic. Recorded here for the first time is a recently discovered sonata by Schnittke, written when he was 20 and studying at the Moscow Conservatory. Tonal, harmonically and structurally conventional but not really derivative, it is full of strong contrasts and abrupt shifts of dynamics, mood and character, which the players bring out very convincingly. For the rest of the program, Hope's fine pianist plays a luthéal, described as an attachment to the piano capable of producing exotic sounds resembling harmonics, lute, cymbalon, harp and flute; it is claimed that Ravel originally wrote the accompaniment to his Tzigane for it. Indeed, on this recording it recreates the orchestral colors much better than the piano. Unfortunately, Hope attacks his part with unbridled ferocity rather than gypsy abandon. Bartók's Romanian Dances are equally excessive: either slow and sentimental or rough and scratchy, and de Falla's Suite populair espagnole lacks grace and charm. Hope recently joined the Beaux Arts Trio, becoming its youngest member ever; his first recording with the group, of works by Mendelssohn and Dvorak, has just been released. --Edith Eisler

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the Tzigane.......2006-08-03

When I was writing an essay about "Tzigane" in my blog, I met this CD. This is the first time I ever heard the original version of Tzigane. I bought it immediately.

Although this is a violinist Daniel Hope's album, the main character here seems to be luthéal, a piano-like instrument that sounds reminds you, if you are a lover of gypsy music, a cimbalom. He plays Fella and Bartók also with the instrument.
"Tzigane" by Ravel has been my favorite piece, my most favorite piece of Ravel. And after listening the Hope's playing, I found that the piece is definitely written to accompany with the luethéal, neither a piano nor an orchestra I always felt the later part of "Tzigane", after accompanying with the piano, that sounds are not like I expected. But here I listened to the original version, that made a sense at all.

Other thing that surprise me is a suite by Falla. I never got interested in Falla pieces but "Suite populaire espagnole" attracted me. Especially the second piece "Nana", I thought it is written by a contemporary composer.

Romanian Folk Dances by Bartók here was not surprise but a fine performance. Hope plays them as if he is a gypsy violinist not a classic concert violinist. In my impression, Bart&243k's pieces were not as effective by using luthéal as Ravel and Falla.

He plays also a violin sonata of Shunittke, strangely the sonata sounds the closest to Classical Music in the album. I don't get well why he puts the sonata in the album. It could be a British joke? Famous contemporary composer's piece sounds more classical than several decades ago pieces, the sonata was written in 1955 though.

The album starts and ends with Shankar, Famous Indian sitar player and composer, who wrote some pieces for Menuhin, Hope's teacher, it would be rather his predecessor than just a teacher. Hope dedicates the album to Rave Shankar.

I think Hope has a good sense of ensemble, he is not a so-called star player, not like "listen-to-MY-playing!!, me, me, me!!" And he wrote commentary about the composers by himself that is not usual, at least I saw the commentary by the player of the album the first time. When I visited in London I was impressed by great organized information in museums. The commentaries are somehow different from ordinary classic music albums and I saw there are deep understanding and admiration to history of music and composers who dedicated their lives to music.

One disappointment of the album is the title, "East Meets West". As I am an Asian and live in a far east country, Japan I imagine East means Asia. He picks Indian music but most of pieces were created by European, two of them, Ravel and Falla, are even from Western Europe. So in my sense, is this East?? Probably East means here rather Roma, Gypsy, or Tzigane who are supposed to originally come from India, than east area.

Anyway I wish Mr. Daniel Hope considers to make a album "Far East Meets West" someday. I tell you, Mr. Daniel Hope, there are many great composers in Asia too.

    Album Description

The Shostakovich release pays tribute to the 100th anniversary of Shostakovich's birth and is a natural follow-up to Hope's Berg/Britten Concertos CD. Shostakovich was a 20th-Century Russian composer who wrote primarily in this romantic idiom and was heavily influenced by Mahler. Daniel Hope celebrates the works of this great contemporary composer with the accompaniment of the BBC Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars The new standard for Shostakovich violin concertos.......2006-04-05

Daniel Hope and Maxim Shostakovich are on the same page with both concertos and make beautiful music together.

Interpretations are uptempo, vigorous and cutting. There is nothing soft or rounded about these performances.

If you're looking for some of the soul of Shostakovich, especially in the second concerto, look no further.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-05

This is a really good representation of 20th century hymn tunes sung by a typical British Choir made up of boy sopranos, male altos and the usual number of tenors and basses. The choir sings very well using good diction and appropriate interpretation. The arrangements are varied, different groups of voices singing parts of a hymn usually alternating and eventually the full choir joins in; nothing unusual in the arrangements themselves. There is a nice variety of hymns, some more interesting than others. I will comment on a few of them as follows:
The opening hymn:'Christ, triumphant, ever reigning' is a good opener in that it is quick and begins with the boy sopranos and immediately gets your attention. John Barnard's majestic 'Guiting Power' tune sweeps the words up in a wide-ranging,flowing melody that creates from them a fine hymn.
'I, the Lord of sea and sky(Here I am, Lord) is a truly striking hymn! The words of this song begin with a proclamation in the verses; this is answered in the refrain by the singer's commitment to service. This is reflected in the tune. The melody for the verses has a vigorous movement to proclaim the work of God in creation, His continuing love for that creation, and His call for service. Both the words and music are by the American Jesuit musician Daniel L. Schutte, who has served both on college campuses and in parish ministry.
'All My Hope On God Is Founded' the tune of which is written by Herbert Howells and is called 'Michael'in memory of his son who died in childhood. It is a lovely melody and the words suit it very well.
The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was the music editor of the 'English Hymnal'. The most widely used of his own tunes was the 'Monk's Gate' which he created from a folk tune. It is subtly contrived, as the rhythm of the alleluias shows. 'Sine nomine' simply means without a name. The resulting hymn is 'For All the Saints'.

The Wells Cathedral Choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer accompanied by Rupert Gough on the organ have produced an excellent disc.

I bought this collection because I saw the song, Here I Am, Lord written by Daniel Schutte. I grew up singing this song and many other pieces from the St. Louis Jesuits and this continues to be one that has deep meaning for me. In addition, the other pieces in this collection are very enjoyable to listen to, not only for worship but for time of reflection.

4 out of 5 stars God is an Englishman.......2000-06-05

After the Anglican Communion, particularly the American branch, has completed its transformation from a church to a political-social club, at least it will be remembered for two things: the beautiful and influential language of its Book of Common Prayer (1662) and its wonderful music. The English Hymn, volume 1, is a promising start to another English music series by Hyperion. This series complements Hyperion's English Anthems series, its Psalms at St. Paul's (many volumes of Anglican chant), and its two-CD collection of "Mags and Nuncs" (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord and My Spirit Hath Rejoiced). Volume 1, "Christ Triumphant," features hymns written in the 20th century. The styles of the hymns range from confident, pre-Great War, "God is an Englishman" roof-raisers to insipid, happy-clappy jingles, which inadvertently, I assume, parallel the decline of the church. The Wells Cathedral Choir sings with gusto and, typical of Hyperion, the sound quality is excellent. My only disappointment came when the CD ended - is this all there is to the 20th century? I hope Hyperion plans to include more than one volume on the 20th century in this series. If you enjoy this type of music, you will be satisfied with this CD. If you have CDs from the other series listed above, the English Hymn, vol. 1, and a programmable, carousel-CD player, now you can click your heels and transport yourself to Evensong at King's College, Cambridge, or St. Paul's, London!

      5 out of 5 stars Romantic Masterpieces.......2006-10-31

I got to know John Foulds music through the second CD that was recorded by the CBSO and Sakari Oramo, which led me to get the first. John Foulds was an accomplished and remarkable man whose music - it surprises me - has been unjustly forgotten. The earliest work on this disc, from 1909, is the fourth music-poem Apotheosis, an elegy for orchestra and violin dedicated to the memory of Joseph Joachim. Cast in a single movement, the music is divided into five stanzas and contains allusions to the violin concertos of Beethoven and Brahms. The music begins with a funeral march that is heard again later in the work.

The fifth Music-Poem Mirage was completed in 1910 and is scored for a large orchestra and has six sections which were given titles indicating the philosophical program of the music such as "Immutable Nature" and "Man's ever-ambition." Oddly, the music was rehearsed by the Halle Orchestra but never was played during Fold's lifetime. The music is passionately Romantic with illusions to Wagner and Richard Strauss. A work that aimed at a wider audience was the Lyra Celtica (Celtic Lyre) - a concerto for voice and orchestra. It is an unfinished work with two complete movements with a third partially completed. It is a beautiful and mysterious piece but will not be to everyone's taste as the wordless voice is a work of this length (16:11) can become monotonous.

The Three Mantras come from an abandoned Sandskrit opera called Avatara which was written during the 1920s. The Three Mantras are all of the music that survives from the opera and represents the preludes to each of the three acts and represent the action that will take place. The Mantras work well as concert works with Mantra I a highly energetic toccata representing the theme of activity followed by a movement representing bliss; a peaceful movement that includes a chorus of wordless women's voices. Mantra III, representing Will, returns to the shattering energy of the first movement. The movement contains Foulds' most complex and explosive music.

The music is beautifully recorded and performed. If you like the music of Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler and do not know John Foulds you will probably be pleasantly surprised.

      2 out of 5 stars Awful racket.......2006-09-17

Couldn't bear listening to much on this disc, and I felt like stopping the CD near the beginning of Mantra #3 (which is track #3 out of 15 tracks), but forced myself to listen to the end. What I hear 90% of the time is tawdry and uninspired. A previous reviewer is, in my view, correct about the chanting (in Mantra #2): It seems to go on and on and completely fails to move this listener. The same can be said of the concerto for soprano and orchestra; one yearns for Gliere's greater mastery in his handling of this medium.

The music improves with the last two items. The Apotheosis, essentally a violin concerto, has some nice moments. And the Mirage, a symphonic poem, aims high, in the manner of Bantock or Bax, but ultimately fails to maintain any consistency of worthy musical ideas, or inspiration. Again, ultimately disappointing.

As mentioned by several previous reviewers, the appearance of experimental compositional techniques in several of these works is certainly admirable, but needs to be couched in music that inspires. Unfortunately, most of the time this doesn't. After this first hearing, it now doesn't surprise me here at least that Foulds' music has not taken hold with either public or performers. In my view, it doesn't stand comparison to British contemporaries such as Cyril Scott, York Bowen, Bax, Bantock, and even Sorabji, where the music at least moves the listener. I love discovering the music of composers unknown to me, but I'm sad to say that Foulds is not one I will be adding to my CD acquistion library.

I had read all of the previous reviews here, and was struck by the wide divergence of opinion, either hating it or loving it, no middle ground. I was hoping to be optimistic, wanting to add another neglected master composer to my already large CD library. But I have to say, I hated the Mantras and the concerto for voice, and found the last two items second rate musically but at least pleasant to listen to.

My advice: Don't waste your money on this CD.

Buy up all the Bax Chandos CDs instead, plus the Cyril Scott Dutton and Chandos CDs, and (when it comes out in 2007) the Bantock "Omar Khayyam" on Chandos together with the other Bantock CDs on the Hyperion, Chandos and Dutton labels.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the other reviews.......2006-09-07

Finding fault with this music because it fails to accurately incarnate the devices of an exotic musical culture completely misses the point. If this is musical kitsch, then so is The Dance of the Seven Veils and Mahler's employment of Chinese pentatonic scales in Das Lied Von Der Erde, not to mention such distant antecedents as the Alla Turca movement from the Mozart A Major variation sonata. In each case, the music should be judged for what it is and not as a failed attempt at ethnomusicological reconstruction.

Secondly, how could anyone compare this with contemporary New Age music when it obviously eschews the repetitive harmonic devices of trance music and demonstrates a modulatory dynamism typical of turn-of-the-century composers? And finally, if you're going to hold a Victorian composer responsible for 1980s soundtracks, then why not pillory Mahler for having given birth to Max Steiner?

I first heard Foulds' music 20 years ago on a Pearl recording of the Quartetto Intimo by the Endellion Quartet, and I was enthralled by the sheer technical finish of the music and the composer's investigation of such esoteric devices as quarter-tones in an enriched diatonic context. His is an original voice, although it is an eclectic originality that doesn't hit you over the head with the sheer invention of a Janacek or Stravinsky.

Nevertheless, anyone who enjoys British music of the 20's and 30's will probably find something to admire here. Foulds may not "sound" exotic in the Three Mantras but his use of microtones, Eastern scales, polyrhythms and even metrical modulation (in the first Mantra)is in fact quite forward-looking. Certainly there is nothing in Vaughan Williams, Walton or Bax that resembles it. The other pieces are just as beautifully scored, but not as inventive in their musical content. The Apotheosis comes right out of the world of the Dvorak romances. The Lyra Keltica (NOT the Keltic Lament) seems to invoke the vocalise passages in the VW Pastoral Symphony and ends in an absolutely rapt coda in which the vocalist stretches her wordless cantilena around whole tones, microtones and quarter-tones (Susan Bickley does it effortlessly). "Mirage" is the most derivatively Straussian, but certainly is beautifully scored and contains many inspired passages of woodwind writing.

Although there are passing references to Strauss and Scriabin, the cooler flames of Elgar, Bax, Bridge and Howells are much in evidence. I also hear Pingoud, Raitio and Merikanto in some of Foulds' orchestral textures, and it is probably no coincidence that a Finnish conductor, Sakari Oramo, has produced the best recordings to date of Foulds' music--with apologies to the old Barry Wordsworth LPO performances on Lyrita.

      Demonstration-class sound and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Relatively Unknown British Composer: Some Thoughtful Insights.......2006-05-27

John Foulds is not a name that leaps to the top of lists of even the more inquisitive surveyors of British music, but taking the time to listen carefully to his compositions as excerpted on this well-recorded CD gives notice of another influence on the now ubiquitous groups of composers devoted to the influence of Eastern music on Western compositions. Britten did it with his gamelan-inspired works (even including his final 'Death in Venice') while other composers still living (Arvo Part, Tan Dun, Unsuk Chin, Philip Glass, Andres Hillborg etc) continue to mine the sounds and techniques of reproduction on old instruments and melodies. Foulds, while not a great composer, did do is part in influencing the trend in his time.

Of the works here recorded the 'Three Mantras' from 'Avatara' (his abandoned Sanskrit opera) show a gift for orchestration that rivals Strauss. His 'Lyra Celtica, concerto for voice & orchestra is well performed Susan Bickley in an extended wordless vocalise. His 'Apotheosis (Elegy), for violin & orchestra is likewise performed with great dignity by the gifted violinist Daniel Hope. And the collection concludes with the huge 'music poem' Mirage, for orchestra. For a composer who died in 1939 his music is quite progressive and deserves more exposure.

Sakari Oramo conducts the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in a committed fashion, obviously with deep respect for a composer who is all but unknown today. This is a far more interesting CD than is being credited, and for those who are eager to know more about 20th century composers who have been neglected, this is a fine selection to try. Grady Harp, May 06

1 out of 5 stars Have to concur........2006-05-26

Hey, don't bring Madame Blavatsky into this! I got through the many hundred pages of Isis Unveiled easier than I sat through this CD.

Yes, this is music that only a certain brand of painfully unaware and matter-of-fact Brit could come up with ( the kind who, during philosophical arguments, refuse to concede that that rock they see in front of them is anything other than a good old solid rock to be kicked with the toe into your scrunched continental visage, sir! ) A lot of the music sounds like inchoate strivings toward what would eventually become the Superman theme. There's a vocalise piece here, wordless female ha-haaaahing, that makes me want to listen to something similar but in better taste, like ABBA's Voulez-Vous.

There's nothing wrong with Foulds having gone to India and striving to express Vedantic wisdom in his music. I will stand proudly next to my collection of Bantock albums and those are mostly a well-fed bourgeois' reveries of ancient Greece. The problem is that ( a ) There is nothing remotely exotic about any of Foulds music and ( b ) It sounds like Christmas music to be piped over tinny speakers at Harrod's while kiddies wait in line to have their satchels signed by a Dumbledorn lookalike.

Absolute nastiness and one of the worst CDs in the collection that threatens to shoulder me out of house and home. If it weren't for the absence of Andrea Bocelli on the cover, I'd think that this were a crossover attempt. My kudos to Foulds though for basically inventing 80's film music back in 1920.
