Even if you go to lots of chamber music concerts, you'll seldom hear these pieces, which are as neglected as most of Dvorák's wonderful output. The String Quartet, Dvorák's ninth, may ramble a bit, but it's so lovely as to disarm any critical reservations, at least on my part. The unusual Terzetto, for two violins and viola, gets played mostly at home chamber music sessions when the cellist hasn't shown up yet. It's relatively terse for Dvorák, but still expansive and beautiful. The set of Dvorák's Quartets by the Prague Quartet (Deutsche Grammophon 429 193-2) has been the standard for decades, but I find these performances better played and recorded, as well as less expensive.--Leslie Gerber

I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Lesser known Dvorák chamber music, beautifully played.......2007-06-19

Dvorák's "American" Quartet in F major, Op. 96, dominates the mainstream chamber music repertory to such an extent that, at least in the U.S., most of the composer's other works for strings are neglected. This Naxos disc pairs two; they not only are united by their relative unfamiliarity but also by their strong points, which are the inner movements of both. The Quartet in D minor's second movement is an amiable Polka, while the Terzetto's third movement is a lilting Furiant, utilizing the distinctive hemiola patterns of the dance, with a lyrical Trio. The slow movements of both works are likewise Dvorák at his loveliest. If the pieces come off unfavorably compared to the composer's better-known chamber music it is in their outer movements; the first Allegro of the Quartet is rambling and not as melodious as one expects from Dvorák, while the "Introduzione" of the Terzetto is too lightweight even for its relatively short length. The dull variation finale of the latter is likewise something of a letdown. Nevertheless, the best moments make this a recording well worth hearing, especially since the Vlach Quartet plays with near flawless unanimity of style and pitch. This is another one of Naxos' many bargain gems that showcase unfamiliar corners of the repertory.

The Terzetto is for an interesting combination of instruments: 2 violins and 1 viola and is a very accessible work for the listener.

More Lovely Playing by the Vlach Quartet.......2000-08-08

The Vlach Quartet of Prague has recorded a number of wonderful performances of Dvorák's music for string quartet on the Naxos label. They seem to have the measure of the music and the performances are superb. As well, the quality of the recordings, done in the Martinek Studio in Prague, is excellent.

The present recording includes not only a quartet but a trio. The quartet, no. 9, Op. 34, was composed in 1877 and revised two years later. The first movement, Allegro, is lovely and sensuous, which could be said of most of Dvorák's chamber music. The second movement, equally well played, has a lilting rhythm which is quite infectious. The third movment, an Adagio, is hauntingly beautiful. The final Poco Allegro sometimes has a kind of semi-fugal quality not usual in Dvorák. It is hard to characterize the Vlach Quartets playing here, because one feels they are simply playing the music as the composer wanted; but in fact, this takes enormous skill and art.

The Terzetto in C Major, Op. 74, does not use the cello, but is scored for two violins and a viola. It was originally composed with an amateur violinist in mind, but proved to difficult for him. The first movement starts out slowly but soon speeds up. It is not the most profound music, but is inventive and quite lovely. The Larghetto is another very beautiful Dvorák slow movement, played with great skill. The scherzo has some infectious rhythms, including some plucked strings, alternated with slower passages which allow the players to demonstrate their precision and flawless intonation. The final movment, Tema con variazione: Poco adagio-Molto allegro, is again very lovely. It allows the players to show off a little of their virtuousity. This is quite a fun performance.

The Lindsay quartet have recently announced their impending retirement. It does not seem long at all since I was attending their concerts with interest and enthusiasm when they were one of the leading new ensembles, I am familiar with several of their records, so it was a slight shock to discover that my own collection included nothing by them. This disc makes a good start to rectifying that lack. None of the three works played here is staple fare for concert-goers or radio listeners, all are the kind of Dvorak that I prefer, the performance and recording are excellent throughout and I have no other records of this music.

The main work here is the third and final string quintet, with Patrick Ireland, formerly of the great Allegri quartet and father of the Lindsays' own Robin Ireland, taking the second viola part. Its opus-number is one higher than that of the slightly over-familiar `American' quartet, which obviously dates it among Dvorak's American compositions too, and in my opinion it is one of the best of them. The trick with Dvorak is to get him to combine his best workmanship and his finest inspiration in the same piece - he tends to treat them as alternatives. One danger-point is prolixity and long-windedness in the slow movement, but this time it is a set of variations. The form imposes its own discipline on the composer, and the performers rightly understand `larghetto' to be more like andante than adagio. The finale is possibly a little lightweight, but it is effervescent and thoroughly enjoyable, particularly when played with the gusto and rhythmic grip shown here.

I particularly like the other two works for taking us back to the true roots of chamber music - music for informal gatherings. The 5 Bagatelles for the intriguing combination of 2 violins, cello and harmonium are the earlier, and Robin Ireland takes the harmonium part just as Dvorak, a viola player himself, seems to have done. I am still getting used to the odd sound, but enjoying the process, and whatever Dvorak may have lacked it wasn't easy charm, or melodic gift, or an acute ear for instrumental tone. The last work is a 4-movement Terzetto, for the three upper instruments of the standard string quartet. This restricts the bass to a lowest note of (if I recall rightly) C in the bass clef. The composer has far too much good sense to be guilty of lengthiness in a case such as this, and he and the Lindsays between them combine to provide an interesting and unusual 20 minutes of civilised and beautiful sound.

It all comes to well over an hour's worth of music, and if it sounds less that is for the very best of reasons.

Surprisingly beautiful.......2000-11-08

Truly amazed that Dvorak, whose symphonies are outside of my range of appreciation (should I be ashamed of that? I don't know . . . ), wrote such lovely, evocative chamber music. I've listened to this set of 4 CDs repeatedly, with growing delight at the beauty of the music but also at the harmonious interplay between all the instruments -- but then the Lindsays are a fantastic quartet. I have heard no one better, live or recorded. They were my reason for purchasing this set, and their performance is astounding. The quartets and quintets here are marvellously melodious, with nothing strong or heavy-handed, so I found myself constantly questioning "Are you sure this is Dvorak?" While anything performed by the Lindsays is fabulous, I have to say that this collection really shows to advantage their precision and rendering skills and their wonderful coordination, so that the quartets especially are beautifully executed. A really fine CD, great for any collector who likes or loves string quartets.

The Prazak is reputed to be the best string quartet in the Czech Republic, and after listening to this performance of the "American" quartet, it's easy to see why. We've all heard this beloved warhorse 100 times either live or in recordings, but never *ever* have I heard a performance like this one. Pick your favorite quartet's performance of the "American." Emerson? Guarneri? Tokyo? Orion? Prazak's is in a completely different league. The conventional wisdom about Russian music is that only Russians can *really* play it the way it was meant to be played. Maybe the same is true of Czech music, though Dvorak's universal appeal would suggest otherwise. Nonetheless the Prazak's performance has a depth of soul like I've never heard before. From the opening announcement of the theme of the first movement on the viola, you know you're in for something completely different--earthy and crisp, it sets the tone for everything that follows. The slow movement is filled with a pathos that moves you to tears; the scherzo is sharp, witty and even a bit naughty; the finale is breathtaking in its joy, yet the middle chorale recalls some of the pathos of the lento, before launching into the exalting coda. No matter how many recordings you have of the "American" this one's a must. A stunner.
