The Grand Tour
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This is a compilation of superb concerti--six in all--taken from four of remarkable violinist Andrew Manze's previously released CDs. The "Tempesta di mare" of Vivaldi is chock-full of picturesque sounds of nature familiar from the composer's Four Seasons; his Sinfonia for strings, though without a violin soloist, is a veritable festival of strings textures. The two Handel Concerti Grossi remain perfect examples of the genre, with a full string section offering fun-filled, energetic, and beautiful accounts of this music, and the Bach concerto for two violins (one of the few he wrote for violins and not harpsichords) brings out the virtuoso in each player. The Geminiani, based on a sonata by the composer's teacher, Corelli, is a study in darkness and light, mellowness and drama. All the performances are glorious. Those who have not become familiar with the playing of Manze, the finest Baroque violinist in the world, should buy this CD immediately; a desire for his others will certainly follow. --Robert Levine

Luciano Pavrotti: The Best (Farewell Tour).......2007-06-27
Wonderful Pavarotti sings the best of the best. His voice never ceases to amaze me. Listening pleasure at it's finest.
Luciano Pavorotti.......2007-02-17
All the songs are wonderful, can never become tired of listening to his songs. Excellent.
Luciano is the best!.......2007-01-20
I can't speak more highly of this collection of Pavrotti's songs. I keep this two CD pack in my car so I can enjoy it on my way to and from work. Even after I have arrived, I find myself sitting in my car waiting for a song to end. Walking out on a song seems sacriligious. While I grew up listening to Caruso and Lanza, there is no question that Pavrotti is the Master! Although, I do have to admit Pavrotti has the greater advantage of modern recording technology to better present his talent than Caruso and Lanza had. However, Lanza definitely didn't have the power that Pavrotti has. With Caruso, we will never know... I highly recommend this collection of Pavrotti's, if you are a Pavrotti fan. If you aren't, buy it anyway and become one:)

That great voice demands Spartan settings, but like Warm Your Heart (1991) this is so mellow it ripens and rots. High points: an exquisitely massaged "These Foolish Things" and a "Song of Bernadette" duet with Linda Ronstadt. --Jeff Bateman

My Man's Favorite Neville CD.......2007-03-21
My husband owned and played this Aaron Neville compilation for years. He loaned his CD to a friend and it was subsequently lost by his friend during a move. I searched for the CD for months and finally found it on Amazon. This is my husbands favorite!!

My wife loves this cd.......2006-03-10
I bought this cd for my wife .. she says this is the very best of Arron Neville ... must be because this is the 2nd one of these she has wanted .. she worn the other one out..
Grand........2004-07-19
This is a surprise for an ex-con. Aaron has all the marks of a bad boy (including the one on his forehead) but when he opens his mouth, a heavenly sound comes out. "Don't Take Away My Heaven" is easily the best song on the album. It is truly heartwarming to hear a former criminal croon out the song-prayer of "The Lord's Prayer". "The Bells" is very pretty, and so is "I Owe You One", and "My Brother, My Brother". Classic Aaron. Bottom Line: INSPIRING, UPLIFTING, BEAUTIFUL.

Grand Funk Live: On Tour 1971 is a trip in the way-back machine to the very beginnings of arena rock, and it functions best if you keep that in mind. On Tour 1971 captures these prosaic rockers at the height of their powers, when they matched the record set by the Beatles by becoming the second rock band to sell out New York's Shea Stadium. Their artless, hard-charging playing and unfaltering energy--especially essential during those extended drum solos on "Inside Looking Out" and "T.N.U.C. "--capture the spirit of a generation in transition by shrugging off the baroque, meandering psychedelia and socially conscious trappings of '60s music and stripping it down to its bare, unvarnished, and unpretentious surfaces. Grand Funk Railroad were considered by fans to be a breath of fresh air--much like the Ramones would be later in the decade. But not everyone was a fan. After manager Terry Knight paid $100,000 for a huge billboard in Times Square in 1970 to promote their album Closer to Home, the backlash from critics and DJs caught fire, even before the band got off the ground. But GFR's popularity rose on the backs of fans. This mighty power trio toured the country relentlessly, bringing their artless brand of hard, blues-based rock to the masses time and time again. These 11 songs represent the band's swing through Chicago, Detroit, and finally Shea Stadium during a week in 1971, and they showcase the band in all their sweaty glory. Mark Farner tears into a song with the ferocity of a starved beast, his voice like Jack Bruce on steroids. Don Brewer, who began life as a jazz drummer, abandons all his high-brow leanings and thrashes out erratic, heart-topping beats, while former Question Mark and the Mysterians bassist Mel Schacher lays down a mighty foundation with his throbbing bass. This is head-banging at its finest, 15 years before the term was coined. While rather lacking in imagination, Grand Funk Railroad make up for it in sheer power. A raucous trip back in time, with the exception of their rather lackluster cover of the Stones' "Gimme Shelter." --Jaan Uhelszki
Album Description
All previously unreleased live tracks recorded in 1971 from Chicago, Detroit & their sold-out appearance at Shea Stadium. 24-Bit digitally remastered. 11 tracks. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Raw, Untamed Energy.......2007-07-23
These guys play like each one drank an entire pot of coffee prior to coming on stage. Totally high-energy, fast-paced, non-stop heavy rock. They don't even pause to breathe. Unbelievable. They don't make 'em like this anymore. I actually grew up on hardcore and punk--I was too young to be a Grand Funk fan in their day. But these guys are the real deal.
Brought me closer to home.......2007-03-20
I forgot how great Grand Funk are until I bought this CD on an impulse. GF was my first live concert (and that means I have a soft spot for this Trio). This live recording sure showcases the bands talents well. I'll wager the music will bring back a flood of memories and emotions if its been awhile since you listened to them. Extremely period sounding record. Its hard to explain. Coupled with the "old fashionend" stage remarks made by Mark Farner (I imagine) sure bring me back. "..Working all day to make a nickel bag." When was the last time you heard that phrase--man? A very out-a-sight recording. A time capsule.
Wait a Minute Guys.......2007-02-02
It may have to do with memory , sequence , songs , details in the recording , etc ... but this has nothing to do with Their Live Album of the same time and space , which is just Fantastic ... The sound is just okey , the ... it`s not the same ... Just gave it away and ordered the Real Thing ... Not worth It ...
Take Me Back..........2006-10-19
I was in the Navy in 1969 and was training in the D.C. area. Late in the year "Time Machine" was getting alot of air play. I loved it! I was dating this pretty young girl working as one of many government administration assistants in Washington. This was pre-computer so there were lots of admin workers. She was very nice, proper, old fashioned and I liked her alot. I liked her so much that I bought her "On Time", GFR's first album. She really liked the gift and we listened to it while we made out on her couch. I eventually got mixed up with some another girl, not quite so prim and proper, if you know what I mean. (winky-dink) I never saw Miss Admin again. All I can say is that I really missed listening to that album. Everything GFR is 5-stars!
BRUTAL.......2006-08-28
By 1971, Grand Funk Railroad already had five LP's under their belts. In retrospect, it turns out to be the ideal point in time for compiling a live GFR album. 'Footstompin Music', which would emerge as a #29 hit several months after the music from this disc was recorded, was being previewed on the tour. While the liner notes quote lead vocalist and guitarist Mark Farner claiming, in 2002, "The song stays the same", none of these songs will ever again be played with the verve, sincerity, and energy they possessed as newborns in 1971. And to give you some idea of where the band was at in that epochal year, four of them are from an appearance at Shea Stadium (with Peter Frampton, Steve Marriot, and their Humble Pie co-horts doing the opening honors), and five from the Funk's backyard of Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan. As such, we're spared some of the band's more commercial numbers ('Some Kind of Wonderful', 'Walk Like a Man' and 'Loco Motion', which charted well in 1973 and 1974), and indulged in their primitive hard-rock beginnings. The only loss would seem to be a rendition of the band's only #1 national hit, 'We're An American Band', which premiered in 1973.
'Live - The 1971 Tour' presents a wicked cross-section of sonic obliteration that was Grand Funk Railroad's forte. Even songs such as 'I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home' (a #22 hit in 1970) and their cover of The Rolling Stones' 'Gimme Shelter', which feature some more subtle moments in their studio incarnations, are given heavy-handed treatments here. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, and indeed in a place like Shea Stadium it may be a necessity, but by the time 'T.N.U.C.' (with it's laborious Don Brewer drum solo) and the cover of The Animals 'Inside Looking Out' roll around, you may find yourself signaling Shea's umpire for a time out. Even the catchy chorus of the encore, 'Into the Sun' can't temper the mega-decibel onslaught.
Nearly every number on the disc features some appealing aspect, defeating the notion that GFR lacked diversity. 'Paranoid' opens with a dark, forboding texture, and plies us with a wicked wah-pedal lead from Farner. 'Hooked On Love' is actually a suite containing three distinct segments, a mid-tempo jaunt serving as the intro, a barreling up-tempo bridge, and the nearly falsetto "hooked on love!" vocal coda. 'T.N.U.C.' (a mysterious acronym to this day) is a take-no-prisoners rockfest, featuring testosterone-laden lyrics such as, "I know what you're tryin' to do... ain't gonna happen...". 'Get It Together' is mostly instrumental excepting the engaging "got to get it together" mantra as the coda. The opener, 'Are You Ready?', is predictably every bit as fast and furious, and BRUTAL as the remainder of the disc.
The album opens with the familiar Richard Strauss composition that serves as the opening theme for the Stanley Kubrick masterpiece, '2001: A Space Odyssey'. The music conjures up images that are both primitive and futuristic... a perfect analogy to the blend of music served up by GFR. Like other three-man-band's of the era, such as Cream and West, Bruce and Laing, the emphasis was on the power of rock, and the recording technology of the era is just barely capable of containing the wattage being generated here. However, with the entire tour being recorded, you can bet an abundance of quality recordings served as the pool these gems were gleened from. The recording (glorious in full 24-bit digital remastering) comes nicely packaged with a twelve page booklet detailing GFR's career and these particular tracks, and numerous period photographs and other artifacts. Best of all, since the disc has been picked up by BMG Direct Marketing, the price has been driven down to the $6 bare minimum. You can't ask for much more from a musical typhoon, whose echos are still surely reverberating somewhere.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

back to back classics.......2006-05-26
This 21 song treat of good country music is delivered to us by George Jones...and the two albums contained on this CD have long been out of print and are consistently hailed as two of his all-time best. The first album we hear is THE GRAND TOUR from 1974. This was at the time of his marriage to Tammy and it's many ups and downs. Arguably geared to exploit the fascination the fans had with his personal life, "The Grand Tour" shot to #1 as many felt the song was about Tammy Wynette since there was a period where she and George separated...and the line "oh she left me without mercy..." near the end of the song help fuel the soap opera on vinyl. The remaining 10 songs on THE GRAND TOUR are all wonderful! "Once You've Had the Best" was actually the first single...released in late 1973 and hitting the Top-10. That song was written by Johnny PayCheck. Several of the highlights are "The Weatherman"; "She Told Me So"; "Borrowed Angel"; "Pass Me By" {which he re-recorded in 2005} and track #11, "Our Private Life". That song is a growling, intense rant about the public and media and the intrusion of a celebrities personal life and how celebrities are held to a higher standard even though they're human and have weaknesses and vulnerabilities like everyone else. Since every song on THE GRAND TOUR is great, you could be easily happy with just this album alone...BUT, we have 10 more tracks from 1976's ALONE AGAIN album included here. There was only one hit single, 1976's Top-5 hit "Her Name Is..." but the album as a whole was so country, when compared to the countrypolitan sounds of his previous two albums, MEMORIES OF US and THE BATTLE, in late 1975-early 1976. ALONE AGAIN was marketed as an album to exploit the George-Tammy divorce aftermath...the album cover shows George sitting alone in a diner. From the start of the album, "A Drunk Can't Be A Man", it sets the tone for the whole album. The bouncy "Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me" i feel was recorded because of the way George perhaps felt about his life at the time. On this album you are also treated to two obscure yet famous album tracks among the Jones fan base: "Stand On My Own Two Knees" and "Right Now I'd Come Back and Melt In Her Arms". These two albums are classics...i know that term is over-rated now-a-days but in this case, the classic label fits these two albums!!
wonderful cd.......2005-06-01
I have been looking for the album, The Grand Tour for years and was finally able to obtain it. George has made many great albums over the years and this combination of two of his 70's albums is possibly the best that I have ever heard in my life! Once again, Jones is the master of country music and after listening to this album, it just goes to show that he is the greatest singer EVER!!!!!
Two brilliant seventies albums.......2005-02-21
George's career (and his life) has had its ups and downs but he has recorded a lot of great country music along the way. This pairing of two seventies albums (Grand tour, Alone again), recorded at around the time of his marriage break-up with Tammy Wynette, provides some of that great music. Despite his personal problems, these albums have their lighter moments although some songs clearly reflect George's problems.
The big country hits here were The grand tour (in which George sings about the memories of Tammy to be found in his house, though he doesn't mention Tammy by name) and Her name is (an amusing song about a secret relationship). Among the many other great songs here are covers of Pass me by (first recorded by Johnny Rodriguez but since covered by several other top country singers), Borrowed angel (Mel Street) and Once you've had the best (Johnny Paycheck).
There are many other excellent tracks here. If you enjoy George's music, you'll love this twofer.
A Double Shot Of Jones, No Chaser..........2004-12-30
This album is the answer to any purist's prayer - two George Jones' albums on one disc, both records out of print. THE GRAND TOUR, released in 1974, and ALONE AGAIN, released after Jones' divorce from Tammy Wynette in 1976, include some fantastic performances and this Canadian release proves that you can never have too much of a good thing.
First we have THE GRAND TOUR, which includes the hit title track which went to number one on the country charts. Co-written by Tammy's future husband George Richey, the song features George pulling out all the stops with his classic vocal delivery. "Once You've Had The Best," written by George's buddy Johnny Paycheck, was also a hit, revealing the singer's tender side and remains a live favorite today. Other highlights include "Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through)," "Who Will I Be Loving Now," and "Borrowed Angel," a tune written by Mel Street. Of special interest is "Our Private Life," a song credited to Jones and Wynette, where the President and the First Lady seem to be taking aim at the media gossip that hovered around the daily soap opera that was their married life at the time.
By 1976 Jones and Wynette had divorced and ALONE AGAIN marks the beginning of George's long free-fall to the bottom, although his singing remained stellar. The opening track, "A Drunk Can't Be A Man," was written by George and his friend Earl "Peanut" Montgomery and is a cold heart-felt hard slab of country soul. The novelty hit "Her Name Is" is a veiled nod to Tammy, as could be "Right Now I'd Come Back And Melt In Her Arms" (Jones admits in his autobiography that he didn't give a damn about exploiting his personal life to sell a few records). Another great cut is "Stand On My Own Two Knees," a song about picking up the pieces and moving on, something he knew all about at the time.
THE GRAND TOUR and ALONE AGAIN both feature some filler material (such as "The Weatherman" and "Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me") but, as is always the case with this man, they also feature songs that will alter your conception of what a singer is capable of. It's a shame that all of Jones' albums with Epic from the seventies are not reissued, but this is a good start.

LONG OUT-OF-PRINT JERRY HERMAN MUSICAL AVAILABLE FROM FRYNSWORTH ALLEY.......2006-10-16
According to Wikipedia, "[Jerry] Herman is the only composer/lyricist in history to have three musicals run more than 1500 performances on Broadway: HELLO, DOLLY! (2,844), MAME (1,508), and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES (1,761)." He's also written a few shows that haven't done so well: MILK AND HONEY (543), BEN FRANKLIN IN PARIS (215), DEAR WORLD (132), MACK & MABEL (66). And then there's this curious musical from 1979 which lasted for just 61 performances.
Originally released by Columbia, the original Broadway cast recording eventually sank into oblivion and became something of a cult recording. Although it was remastered in 2002 by Fynsworth Alley, it appears to have fallen off the radar, which is a shame since it contains some of Jerry Herman's best writing, earning Mr. Herman his third Tony nomination for best original score. Even though the score adheres closely to the "Jerry Herman Broadway Musical" formula, it contains three lovely ballads and a number of equally fine up-tempo songs, more-than-serviceable orchestral and choral arrangements (Philip J. Lang & Donald Pippin), and heartfelt performances by the show's principals Joel Grey, Ron Holgate (both Tony nominees), and Florence Lacey, winner of the 1978 Theatre World Award (Irene Malloy in the HELLO, DOLLY! revival).
Based upon the play "Jacobowsky and the Colonel" by S. N. Behrman, which is in turn based upon the original play of the same name by Franz Werfel, THE GRAND TOUR takes place in France in 1940, and is about "a little Jewish man running away from the Nazis." Even though he has been driven out of Poland, Berlin, Vienna and, now, Paris, surviving is what Jacobowsky does best as he explains in "I'll Be Here Tomorrow," the song that has become Jerry Herman's personal credo. He commandeers a car, but the only candidate for driver is Colonel Tadeusz Boleslav Stjerbinsky, a self-centered, anti-Semitic nobleman from Jacobowsky's village in Poland. First stop is to pick up the Colonel's lady love and the subject of the lovely ballad "Marrianne." Their escape has many detours and, naturally, Jacobowsky and Marriane fall in love, and the Colonel's dislike for Jacobowsky develops into respect ("I Think, I Think") and friendship ("You I Like"). Book writers Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble have added a few locales and modes of transportation not found in the original play, weakening the narrative but allowing for the inclusion of some fine ensemble numbers like "We're Almost There" (with its reference to one of Catherine the Great's fabled lovers), "One Extraordinary Thing," and "Wedding Conversation/Mazel Tov." Ms. Lacey lends her rich soprano to "I Belong Here," and she and Mr. Holgate share a charming duet ("More and More/Less and Less"). Mr. Grey gets to sing some of Jerry Herman's finest lyrics when he envisions what his life with Marianne might be ("Mrs. S.L. Jacobowsky"). My only complaint is that Mr. Grey's accent is much the same as the one he employed in CABARET.
Even though THE GRAND TOUR missed the mark on Broadway (blame the book writers for that), the music deserves to survive. Thanks to Fynsworth Alley, it will - if you go to their web site and order it.
Recommended.

F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.!.......2006-02-02
I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.
At LAST the complete series ORIGINAL soundtrack, the wait is over!.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Excellent Overview of the Life of Mozart.......2006-12-21
"Life & Works" is an excellent telling of the life of Mozart that primarily uses his letters, the letters of his family and friends, and his excerpts of his music. It is a rich combination that avoids many of the cliches of other biographical pieces (such as not ending with the Requiem)and gives a freshness and vibrancy to his life. The narrator was charming and quite entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed "Life & Works" and recommend it to Mozart lovers and those new to his work!
