    All the concertos contained on these four CDs are directed by women: Monica Huggett, Elizabeth Wallfisch, Alison Bury, Catherine Mackintosh. Having found the time to sit down and listen to the whole set really carefully, what I heard pleased me, on the whole, very much indeed, with only the fourth Brandenburg Concerto seeming a little "weak-kneed". The Brandenburg Concertos here cannot, perhaps, quite compete with Trevor Pinnock's legendary recording for Deutsche Grammophon Archiv, but the female directors have all obviously taken a good deal of trouble over the individual concerti and I was able to hear a good deal of detail, some of which I had not noticed on other recordings (and I own six or seven "Brandenburgs"). The playing is really excellent, the soloists are all quite remarkable for their competence and skill. Just listen to Catherine Mackintosh on the violino piccolo in the first Brandenburg Concerto, for example, or to the oboe, trumpet and harpsichord solos in some of the other concertos - this is all wonderful stuff!

    The additional two CDs in the box contain Bach's Violin Concertos, the Triple Concerto BWV 144 and four reconstructed violin concertos (one with an additional oboe solo part), all played and directed from the violin by female Australian period-instrument specialist Elizabeth Wallfisch. I must say that here, too, I enjoyed the performances very much, although in the end I felt that BWV 1044 was rather weaker than on competing recordings by La Stravaganza Hamburg/Siegbert Rampe (Virgin Veritas) or by Le Concert francais/Pierre Hantai (Naive-Astrée). Of course, the reconstructed concertos are speculative, but it is quite fascinating to hear them in these versions instead of the much better-known harpsichord versions.

    The documentation corresponds to the price and is kept to an absolute minimum.

          This compilation of Bach's Violin Concertos has been in the CBS (now Sony) catalog since 1983. The recordings themselves are older. The "Double Concerto," from a live concert conducted by Zubin Mehta, attains considerable eloquence in the slow movement and has plenty of energy, although the orchestra is oversized for its task and isn't transparent enough. In the First Violin Concerto, Isaac Stern unwisely divides his attention between playing and conducting. His playing sounds routine, as though his mind weren't completely on it (as it isn't), and the orchestra's playing is pedestrian. The Second Concerto benefits from the alert leadership of Schneider and Stern's more sharply focused playing. In all, these are good mainstream Bach performances, although not as stylish as period-instrument versions of the same works. The price is reasonable, but the program is only LP length. --Leslie Gerber

          I bought a copy of this on tape as a child back in 1986, and since have never really stopped listening to it. I ended up buying the CD after wearing out the tape!

          Certainly, you can hear the coughing and various ambient noises of the crowd, and there are a couple of scratchy notes here and there in the recording, but I've yet to hear a more emotional and impassioned interpretation of these pieces.

          This CD is a classic and should be a part of any Bach enthusiast's collection!

          This recording should be your first choice, it is full of life and authority. I personally believe it sets the standard. -> I was let down after listening to the Philips recording of Arthur Grumiaux. His interpretation is sometimes rushed, sometimes late, sometimes too meek.

          Isaac Stern and Itzhak Perlman's interpretation of Bach's Violin Concerto for two violins exemplifies the passion and energy that makes this concerto one of my favorites. The recording was made in 1967 a time when these virtuosos were at opposite ends of their respective primes. Stern the veteran gracefully lays down a soothing melodic underscore, as Itzhak Perlman the relative newcomer, harmonizes masterfully with some dazzling and incredibly moving pieces that would never be caught in the confines of a studio. While some may find it unsettling to hear coughing in the background, I find it absolutely refreshing to have an experience captured live, giving the impression you were actually there with all the perfections and imperfections that are present during an event such as this. As far as the quality of the CD there is no hissing on my CD, in fact it is quite clear. If you needed to start a collection in classical music this CD is a must have!!!

          I love the music of this CD but the quality of the recording is bad. For one, I cannot play this CD in my car because it makes a lot of "scratchy" sounds. I admit, this might be something with my player, but I have no other CD's that reproduce this behavior. Another thing that irritated me is that because this recording is live, you can hear lots of coughing at various times throughout. I am now on a quest for another recording.
