Bach: The Organ Works [Box set]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
When it comes to organ music there's Bach, and there's everyone else. The actual amount of organ music that he composed is in dispute for a couple of reasons. On issue is attribution: much of the music exists only in copies from Bach's pupils and family members, and so the question of authorship may be in doubt. The other issue is which instrument Bach actually intended some of the keyboard music to be played on. Although scholars agonize over this problem, the fact is that Bach's music usually sounds fine played even on kazoos--it's almost indestructible--so the organ suits it in any case. This collection is one of the most comprehensive available, and it's excellently played and recorded. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars organ works by bach.......2007-01-10

excellent. unforgettable works by one of the masters, the grand organs have their own place in time mostly heard in church surroundings. this brings it home.cigar, brandy, toccata and fugue d minor, heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Hurford plays very musically.......2006-11-24

Peter Hurford is a wonderul musician.. his interpretations of this music are musical.. (esp. with the St. Anne Fugue where each of the three variations are connected with beatiful transitions..)
A wonderful recording.. in an era where everything has to be perfect,
it's nice to hear an artist take some risk and give us their own
personal, unique, and original interpretations.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-07-27

When you buy a CD like this, the one thing you expect of the artist is to nail the intro to Toccata and Fugue In D Minor, Bach's great masterwork and the lead piece on the CD. Unfortunately, the organist plays the intro robotically, truncating notes and overextending pauses. He rushes some passages so badly in the intro that one cannot distinguish the melodic line. Toccata and Fugue In D Minor is so musically advanced that it sounds modern even today, but you miss that with this recording.

5 out of 5 stars This album belongs amongst the first four or five in every Bach collection........2006-07-27

What to say about these extraordinary works?

First of all, that this is a double-album full of titanic masterworks, intelligently and skillfully performed. These discs belong amongst the first four or five albums in every Bach collection. The famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor is here, together with another, lesser-known but equally awe-inspiring "Dorian" Toccata and Fugue in D minor. There are quite a few other familiar war-horses---the Prelude and Fugue in A minor, the St. Anne Prelude and Fugue, and the Tocatta, Adagio, and Fugue in C (which I first encountered in a piano transcription performed by Evgeny Kissin, on his album with the Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition... well worth hearing next to the original organ writing here), among others---and some more obscure pieces as well to keep us out of "greatest hits" territory (almost always a drawback in recital albums). Like the Mozart piano concerti and the Beethoven symphonies, Bach's compositions for organ are amongst the towering summits of Western music; there is nothing else like them.

Since I'm playing critic here, I suppose I ought to offer at least a bit of actual criticism, rather than only effusive praise. While many would beg to differ, three composers (whose careers, interestingly, were almost exactly chronologically contiguous) are, by a long-standing historical consensus, recognized to occupy the highest tier of artistic achievement in "common practice," tonal music: Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Of those three masters, Mozart alone is recognized as having achieved a perfect or near-perfect balance between subject and object, style and substance: Bach tipped the balance just a bit in favor of objectivity and substance, and Beethoven in favor of subjectivity and style. And so, just as I find that Beethoven's music does not hold up quite as well as Mozart's to repeated listenings because his stylistic and emotive devices are less effective once you've heard them before, so that they no longer take you by surprise, so too do I find that Bach's music, especially in the long contrapuntal sections, is not always as worthwhile for listening as it is for theoretical analysis... it is perhaps not quite as valuable in practice as it is in theory, in other words. The organ pieces on these discs are sublime masterpieces, but if they do fall short of absolute perfection it is for being somewhat dry and academic.

In addition, the different organs Herford plays here so often produce, as good organs will, such a staggering, chest-rumbling roar that you have trouble discerning the pitches in these compositions. It's a similar problem to listening to harpsichord music, where at times you hear just a lot of clanging and can't tell what note or chord is being played. It's not a big problem on these recordings, but it is a little distracting at times.

Nevertheless, it's said that what makes a work of art a masterpiece is not its being perfect or flawless, but rather that its virtues are so meaningful and effective that they compensate for the piece's flaws and imperfections. In fact, in sublime pieces such as these, it's precisely that imbalance, or aesthetic asymmetry, you might say, that makes the music dynamic and exciting: it creates an inner tension, a sort of yearning or striving that, in the hands of the greatest of masters (of which Bach is uncontestably one), makes for a transcendent artistic statement and an invaluable testament to the human experience.

In short, buy this album and listen to it often!

4 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment in this Bach recording............2006-05-29

Peter Hurford is perhaps one of the foremost organists of his time. He has not only studied music but law as well, giving a scholarly twist on his education. I have always been pleased by his interpretations of Bach. They are no-nonsense, with strict tempos, clean, accurate passages, and registrations which are very lush and vibrant. For the new fan of Bach, there is no better place to start, as this set contains all of the "big" organ pieces for which Bach became legendary, as well as a few well-known chorale preludes. For those who wish to explore Bach's organ contributions in more detail, buy Hurford's complete Bach recordings (Although I believe it is out of print or very hard to obtain, as I have not yet found one). If this is the case, buy Marie-Claire Alain's version on Erato. No two organists understand Bach better.

2 out of 5 stars poor sound quality.......2004-09-29

a great selection of baroque favorites, but the sound quality, especially on the pachelbel canon, not great at all. for that reason, i cannot recommend getting it. what do you expect for five dollars, right !>? i would suggest spending a little more money and getting something that you can't bear to part with, for continued listening enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB.......2004-02-19

An introduction to the best baroque music by famous composers.
Great sound on this CD. There are over 10 CD's in this Farorites collection, and this by far is one of the best ones.

If you like the classical sounds of music, then you will like this. Check out the samples on this page that they provide, that's the best way to review.

5 out of 5 stars In this case: I'm baroque.......2004-02-07

I'm not usually a classical listener kind of gal. The only reason I stumbled onto this cd is because my favorite tune from a movie is on it. Sarabande is also played on the movie Persuasion (author: Jane Austen). I wanted to have that tune. Followed the links and landed on the Baroque cd. Ordered it. Sarabande is my favorite, followed by Canon, four seasons: spring, etc. I love this cd! It feels happy and light. For me, as a writer and an animator, it adds extra emotional impact when creating as well as influencing my imagination more. I recommend this cd when people want to feel like spring.

5 out of 5 stars Come to laugh and stay to cry.......2003-11-26

Circumspect at first about buying any CD with a "best of" title, this one really exceeds expectations. Also bought the Vivaldi disc in this series which is likewise exceptional. With the caveat that "Ombra mai fu" is repeated in various of the "25 favorites" collections, I recommend these recordings wholeheartedly, especially in terms of cost per track.

"Canon" is the flagship piece on this CD, a lush arrangement that will move a strong man to tears. Almost as powerful are Bach's "Air on the G String" and of course, Handel's "Ombra mai fu". The disc ends on an up note with "Trumpet Voluntaire".

At this price, you can send "Baroque favorites" to every Classical music lover you know. I would recommend sending this CD even to people who don't like Classical...you might just change their minds.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Beautiful Music.......2000-07-08

The Baroque period (1600-1750) was one of the most important in the history of music because many of our modern musical forms come from this time. The baroque style is diverse, including such elements as contrast and a deep emotionalism. Although orchestras perform the songs, many individual instruments are highlighted. The baroque composers especially loved strings, the trumpet, and the oboe. The songs range from the vibrant and the lively to the slow and the sad. I have found this CD is excellent as background music for studying, reading, or driving in rush hour traffic, mainly because the music is calming and relaxing. Baroque masters such as Bach and Handel are still popular today and their songs are loved by many. Fans of popular music will recognize a few of the songs on this CD. "Air on the G String" (Bach) was used by Procol Harum in their song "A Whiter Shade of Pale." "Canon," one of the most popular baroque songs today, is often performed at weddings and has been incorporated into pop songs by artists such as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Vitamin C, and Rod McKuen.

This CD is considered an introduction to baroque music. It includes some of the most famous composers and their best songs. For example, Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi each have three songs on this disc. The liner notes are sparse, but a brief history of baroque music is included. Because of the inexpensive price and the huge amount of music (25 songs, 74 minutes of music), I highly recommend this for anyone who already loves the baroque style or wants an excellent introduction to this beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars "Blasted" away.......2006-09-27

I am by no standards an expert on music, let alone organ music. I just purchased this CD because I love the sound of the organ, and wanted an album from a mix of artists before I started branching out to single composers. I would also consider myself an audiophile, only listening to high quality music with my portable headphone amplifier and Sennheiser HD-555's. Let me tell you, the quality is perfect, and the music is incredible! Such a full sound, it's *almost* as good as sitting in audience, only lacking the full body experience of organ music. I would recommend this to anybody looking to get a foot into the world of organ music.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-06-07

I happen to love organ music, even that tacky Saint-Saens
Third Symphony (with which this CD ends and just the third movement).

I grew up with E. Power Biggs, Virgil Fox, et al. and had never heard of Michael Murray (okay, it's been a while). I bought this delightful CD when it first appeared and before Amazon had been invented.

Upon hearing that most famous work with which Murray begins, I confess I was just this side of hysterical -- I was laughing with pure happiness. Murray's take on is it wonderfully over-the-top in the best possible sense. I have a son-in-law who is a musician and, indeed, does play the organ (i.e., if any of them have had pipes, I don't know, but I'm here to tell you, I don't want to hear ANY but pipe organs -- okay, I'm old).

At any rate, to hear this Toccata and Fugue played with such (carefully studied) abandon so tickled me, I called Brian (the son-in-law) and demanded that he listen while I put it on my stereo.

Now I'm going to send it to my son Bruce upon learning last night that he LOVES organ music. Who knew? He's 54 years old, for goodness' sake and never mentioned that little item before.

4 out of 5 stars For those who like BIG organ works.......2005-09-04

This CD concentrates on the big, showy organ pieces that organists love to play. As an organist myself, I find that such numbers are usually more fun to play than to hear. Fortunately, this CD is very listenable, and makes the case for both playing and listening to these works. I'd buy it again; maybe more telling, I'm looking for some of the music, so I can go play it!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Majestic Power!.......2003-07-20

Corey is right - this is an outstanding organ CD, one of the best I've heard. Murray plays some of the largest and most powerful organs on Earth, and uses the reed stops more than the usual organist to produce great effects and a wall of sound that are majestic in the extreme. The selections are all great virtuoso showpieces, and track #6 by Messiaen (Dieu parmi nous from La Nativite') is especially demonstrative of the great contrasts available in a large organ. The horizontal trumpets in this piece are predominant and very bright, contrasting with the snarling bass of the pedal organ.

A word of caution - this CD requires a capable stereo (think subwoofer) to sound its best. Trust me - if you listen to this CD on a good stereo and if you like organ music, you'll sit there with a big grin on your face and tears in your eyes as you listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Performance by Murray.......2001-11-09

This is by far one of the best organ CD's I have ever listened to. The variety is very good overall. From the state trumpets at St. John's to the mighty organ of First Congregational Church, Murray provides nice registration on all of the organs sampled. The Finale from Saint-Saens No. 3 is awesome with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy,s direction. Murray provides his own notes on the organs and the pieces in the booklet that is included. This is some fine organ music!!

Alison Balsom's Bach is a spirited romp through various works of the master arranged for trumpet solo and a changing cast of colleagues. Orchestral works are done in a chamber reduction, with the trumpet taking the solo violin part; solo works, like two movements from Bach's Cello Suite No. 2, are played in arrangements for trumpet. Transpositions abound, the net result being vaguely familiar music sounding fresh and different. In general, Balsom is most effective in faster, more outgoing movements and pieces where her bright tone, technical mastery, and sprightly tempos carry the day. The Italian-based works, Bach's Italian Variations, and his own arrangements from Vivaldi and Marcello fit this pattern, and so does the Trio Sonata arrangement from an organ work, where Balsom's trumpet interacts with violin and basso continuo to strike sparks. Least effective are the arrangements of movements from Bach's unaccompanied violin and cello masterpieces, in part because the inherent brightness of her trumpet is at odds with the warmth and nuances of a stringed instrument. The Badinerie from Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 2, whose melody and its association with the flute are indelibly imprinted on music lovers, comes off as a spectacular accomplishment on Balsom's far more unwieldy instrument. Excellent playing by the assisting musicians helps make this foray into a modernized version of Bach's music an enjoyable experience. --Dan Davis

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Boring.......2007-01-19

Ms. Balsom plays with exquisite technique throughout this disc. But her approach is so gentle that it seems to lack guts. The music sounds lifeless - devoid of personality and energy. I agree with the above reviewer who explains that she makes no real artistic statement.

5 out of 5 stars Great new sound.......2007-01-14

Alison brings a feminine touch to the trumpet tone as I have never heard. Her transcriptions are well picked and flawlessly executed. I would highly recommend this cd to any instrumentalist.

4 out of 5 stars great find.......2006-10-12

4 out of 5 stars a magnificent player, but not yet artistically mature.......2006-09-08

Balsom delivers an attractive disc here, with her impressive technical skill and a sophisticated seriousness of purpose in her programming, but there's something important missing from this album. Balsom plays with magnificent virtuosity, but she presents no message, no artistic voice, no aesthetic philosophy, no unique understanding of or approach to these works of J.S. Bach. I think she's overly preoccupied with proving herself. There's a Carnival of Venice sort of character to this disc: bars and bars of sixteenth notes flow effortlessly from her trumpet, and then bars and bars more, but for all that you get no sense of a distinct musical personality. (Her tone is very French as well: focused and bright. You can hear that she's been taking Håkan Hardenberger pills. Personally I'm not fond of this sort of trumpet sound, but I understand that it's a matter of taste.)

I have an album of Bach oboe concerti, played by Heinz Hollinger, that's similar to Balsom's effort here: flawlessly even, rapid-fire delivery of difficult lines is emphasized. But what Hollinger communicates that Balsom doesn't is a certain idiosyncrasy, a sense that only Hollinger could play those pieces quite like that, even if another oboist were to match his tempos. Even Wynton Marsalis -- who was often criticized for being mechanical and stylistically daft in his classical recordings of the '80s -- evinced an amiable flair and attitude that Balsom here lacks.

Listen, for example, to the slow, lyrical movements: the sarabande from the D minor cello suite, say. This is the sort of music through which an instrumentalist of consummate artistry -- a Milstein, or a Fournier -- could explore his own aesthetic vision while at same time revealing to us the sublime depth and breadth of Bach's artistry. With Balsom, though, there's no insight... it's all very pretty and she really means it, but you can't say much more about her reading. Not having hundreds and hundreds of notes to keep track of in this movement, she seems a bit unsure of exactly where to direct her energies.

Even so, I think that a musician must be of immense skill to merit this sort of criticism at all. Lesser players delight for being very good; Balsom here disappoints just a bit because her playing hints at true greatness but isn't quite there. Balsom is a magnificent player lacking a distinct voice, and if she develops one she will become one of the most important instrumentalists on the scene.

I can,t stop listening to this player.

5 out of 5 stars Superb match of music, artist, and instrument.......2006-02-24

On March 2, 1972, a spacecraft called Pioneer 10 was launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. On the grounds that the craft might at some point, at some time, come under the notice of intelligent beings on another world, a plaque was attached to the craft, etched with some figures and whatnot. The figures were designed to "represent the type of creature that created Pioneer." It struck me at the time that if we wanted to tell others not only what type of creature we are, but what we are supremely capable of, that we should include a recording of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, and, more specifically, this recording of that marvelous expression of the human mind and spirit.

E. Power Biggs was known not only for his mastery of the pipe organ, but also for his careful matching of a particular composition to an organ best suited to its performance. We can hope that Sony will at some point release a CD of Biggs' performance of the Toccata from Widor's fifth organ symphony on the organ of the Episcopal Church of St. George in New York City with its 32 -foot ranks. The thundering pedal notes in the concluding part of the work have never had better justice done to them.

All the tracks on this CD were recorded on the Flentrop organ in the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard University, from about 1961 to 1972. Again, Biggs seems to have chosen his instrument wisely, as the pieces he plays here feel so absolutely right on that organ. Yes, there is some tape hiss, and I think I detected a little bit of tape "wow" at one point. But if you will listen beyond those things, concentrate on the music in itself, I think you cannot fail to be both impressed and moved, even if you have heard the pieces played by many other artists in many other venues. Technique and artistry alike are both superb and unique in this recording of these monuments of Bach's genius.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, commanding; dynamite recording quality.......2005-10-28

This CD is a 2002 re-issue of the Sony Essentials CD from 1991. That disc is also still available from Amazon. Just type in "E. Power Biggs" on the search line to make sure you get to the appropriate page. Several customer reviews are available there. You will see it listed as "Bach: Toccata & Fugue; Passacaglia & Fugue; Pastorale; Prelude & Fugue". I can really only add my voice to the other reviewers, some of whom are far more eloquent than I. Suffice it to say that E.Power Biggs is the best. The famous Toccata & Fugue in D Minor is so perfectly performed here by Mr. Biggs. Of course, all the other compositions are equally well-performed. These recordings date from 1961, 1965, and 1972, according to the last page of the liner notes. There is some tape hiss present; however, it only appears during very quiet passages, and there are precious few of those, so I don't really consider it a problem. Take my word that the recordings on this disc are absolutely excellent. I have some vinyl discs from Columbia Masterworks featuring Mr. Biggs, and this disc reminds me of those top-quality recordings. It may be that these CD recordings come from original Columbia Masterworks as well. What matters in the end here is twofold: the works of Bach and the performances of Mr. Biggs. I would also suggest that anyone who wants to pursue E. Power Biggs' recordings of Bach to browse through his other recordings here on Amazon in order to complete their collection. In the meantime, I can guarantee that this disc at this low price is one wonderful buy.

4 out of 5 stars Vibrant sound and Performance, some questionable interpretetations.......2006-05-29

This particular michael murray recording makes up for the lack of recordings of the magnificent organ in St. John Divine. It is perhaps one of the greatest and largest American organs, notably the very powerful state trumpet stop located underneath one of the rose windows (This is one of the few stops of its kind in existence). The Agincourt Hynm really shows off what this stop is capable of. There is some good variety in this recording, although sometimes I felt that the State Trumpet was used in excess (it became annoying at points, simply because it was so powerful and overused). The biggest downfall of this recording is the interpretation of the Widor Symphony VI Finale. I felt the tempo was extremely too slow, and due to this, was lacking the excitment of this wonderful piece (For a more exciting, no holds-barred recording of the Widor 6th, check out David M. Patrick's recording). Overall, this recording is very powerful and really shows off what this famous, yet, not so very often recorded organ can do.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best ever.......1999-11-08

This disc has on it one of America's foremost organists playing one of the largest organs ever constructed. The result is a mix of good music well played with some rather irritating bits. Firstly, the Dunstable and the Purcell (actually by Jeremiah Clarke) make use of the incredible State Trumpet stop; whilst this makes for an excellent first track, in which it appears briefly at the start and end in a sort of fanfare motif, the use of this stop in the Trumpet Tune becomes ear-splitting and tiresome. Murray also has an apparent predilection for slower speeds (though in the main there is nothing wrong with that). Perhaps the most annoying thing is the second Vierne track (the Prelude in D major)- the sleeve notes make a clear point that "any music can be played on this organ", but whether as a result of the recording equipment or the gigantic acoustic or the instrument, it is as if this track was recorded through thick cotton wool from a distant room in the Cathedral. However, even with all these points, this is an interesting programme rendered with genuine sensitivity on a challenging instrument. Worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......1999-06-27

I bought this CD several years ago, and I never get tired of listening to it. Michael Murray gives his usual brilliant rendition of some of the world's greatest organ music in a setting with vibrant accoustics as St. John the Divine is one of the largest churches in the US. This should be required listening for any organ enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars The "Other" Works Stand Out.......2001-09-11

This CD has many wonderful organ pieces. In fact, _every_ piece is an ocean of musical genius. And though I agree with the preceding reviewer--viz., that the recording is wanting in a few respects--I find the organ's recorded tonality to be "good," overall. However, for someone who has never heard a lot of the organ, the first few listenings may be trying. (Most people, in my experience, find that a little organ goes a long way; a CD spotlighting the organ may be a too much of a singular thing for those people.) And for those who simply do not care for the organ (descriptions such as "funeral music" come to mind), you will probably not find any new fascination with the instrument on this CD.

But this CD does offer a dynamic range of Bach's organ music: "Nun Komme Der Heiden Heiland" is especially sober (as they are between "the" Toccata and Fugue and Bach's Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, the solemnity of both chorales is compounded), while Bach's concerto after Vivaldi is especially lively; and a careful listen to Bach's fugues is always a rewarding endeavor. Lionel Rogg interprets certain pieces in a manner with which I do not always agree (i.e., the toccatas); but the slight variations from orthodoxy have merit, for the listener may hear Bach's music in a new--and possibly enlightening--way.

4 out of 5 stars Good budget disc.......2000-12-31

Decent performance at a very low price. Bass quantity and performance isn't quite like my Verany and Telarc discs, but still enjoyable. I'm impressed with the diversity, a couple of chorales, fugues, and a Bach/Vivaldi concerto. However, I'd skip this one if price isn't a consideration and get a higher quality disc with similar selections.

5 out of 5 stars Bach with a nice difference.......2007-02-16

Bach, hmmmm, one of the desert island composers for me. I own three complete organ works (yeah I need a life). This is one of the better. The recording quality is faultless. And for a laugh, listen to the wonderfull reeds of the pedal department jumping from left to right (speaker) in BWV 550 ... Prelude and Fugue in G Major ... I just love stereo when the mics are right in the middle of the organ and you hear the pipes singing from left to right!! Another wonderful surprise was Ritchie's use of the 32' reed stop in the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

I can almost hear the purists intake of breath, tsk tsk's and see their rolling eyes. However, Bach did travel around central Germany and I read in Grove's Dictionary his comment about the wonderful 32' stop at Leipzig.

The collection of American organs on this set was also an eye opener for me (not being from America) and only knowing about the monster organs like St. John the Devine (NY) or the Wannamaker. It's good to know that there are some beautifully voiced and balanced smaller organs to be found.

5 out of 5 stars No Need to Look Further.......2007-01-04

All the superlative reviews of this set are correct. The sound engineering is superb. The performances range from the sublime to the magisterial, as one would expect with Bach's organ works. If you order direct from Raven Records, you can pick up this set for about $50. They delivered it promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed!! I've never purchased a box set of CDs that gave you more for your money.

The following comments have been published by major music publications:

"Impossible to recommend highly enough!" reviews The American Organist

"This is Bach as Bach intended his music to be heard,"
writes John Holland, The Diapason

"You couldn't ask for a more concise showcase of the last 20 years of 'historically informed' American organ building,"
writes Jonathan Ambrosino, Choir & Organ, December 2006

"[Bach would] empathise with Ritchie's incisive yet never finicky articulation, be it . . . lyrically flowing or . . . multi-stop climaxes. . . . Ritchie's linear clarity and effortless execution of the difficult pedal writing is world class. . . . engineering is consistently excellent," reviews Jed Distler in the Gramophone, November 2006

". . .an ideal combination of music, performance, instruments, recording . . ."
Arthur Lawrence, The American Organist

". . . a reference-level collection, it should be in any serious library, and should be reached for frequently. . . Everything about this production exhibits the highest quality. When the need is to hear Bach played to perfection, this set should be at hand. Impossible to recommend highly enough!"
Paul Aldridge, The American Organist, November 2006

"These performances are ripe with a depth of scholarship, musicality, and knowledge . . ."
Haig Mardirosian, The American Organist

5 out of 5 stars Old Friends, Rejuvenated.......2007-04-02

I have known these recordings since they were first issued on LP in the 1960's, and I am more than delighted that they have been reissued on CDs with even cleaner and fuller sonics. I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviews that have thus far appeared here on Amazon and can add only one or two additional comments:

Karl Richter's Bach performances, although they represented a departure from the over-romanticized treatments of Baroque music that had prevailed up to his time, were not the kind of trailblazing return-to-authenticity projects of Trevor Pinnock, Christopher Hogwood, and others, whose early-music-performance practices continue to be the standard today. Thus, in the matter of tempos, Richter may sound a little slow to some modern ears; however, he generally goes at a faster clip than his contemporary, E. Power Biggs, and his predecessor Albert Schweitzer, but not as fast as Anthony Newman and others who have followed in more recent years. His tempos and style are perfect for my taste, however: almost sassy compared with Biggs, yet much more tasteful than Fox (not that I am immune to enjoying the latter's excesses), and less frenetic than Newman.

The recording quality is excellent and works in concert with some nicely pungent reeds in the organ to produce results of sparkling clarity.

As a side note, I found it interesting that two of the three CDs contain over 81 minutes of music; I had thought 80 was the absolute limit (other than for MP3 discs).

    5 out of 5 stars Music for a Winter's Day.......2007-02-27

Between 1964 and 1980 Karl Richter (1926 --1981) made extensive recordings of Bach's organ music. These recordings have recently been reissued by Deutsche Grammophon in a 3-CD set as part of its "Legendary Recordings" series. This set is a joy for those who love the organ. It includes four hours of Bach's greatest music for the instrument, beautifully played. It was the ideal companion for me during this past snow and icebound weekend in Washington D.C.

Richter, of course, was best-known as a conductor of early music, but this set also shows him as a master of the organ. He made most of these recordings between 1964 and 1969 performing on a modern organ at the Jaegersborg Church near Copenhagen. The final three works in the collection date from 1978 and were recorded on a historic Silbermann organ at the Freiburg Cathedral. This instrument has a warmer sound than the modern instrument at Jaegersborg Church.

This set captures Bach's organ music in all its variety, including its icy grandeur and its moments of meditative reflection. Bach's organ music is learned, inspiring, and emotional. Written for church performances, it reaches towards the transcendent, regardless of the listener's creed. The set includes a cross-section of the major works and styles in Bach's output for the instrument. For most listeners, some selections will be familiar while, for all but those listeners with broad familiarity with Bach's organ works, some will be new.

The set opens with an arresting performance of the familiar Toccata and Fugue in d-minor, BWV 565 which some scholars do not attribute to Bach. The other work in this collection with widespread recognition, is the Schubler chorale arrangement of "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme," which Ricther takes in a meditative, slow tempo. Richter also performs several additional preludes including: "Kommst du nun, Jesus, von Himmel herunter", BWV 650 and a later prelude from a set of 18, "Schmucke dich, o liebe Seele", BWV 654, which also receives a deeply introspective interpretation. Of the final works Richter recorded, two are late chorales, "O Gott, dur frommer Gott", BWV 767 and "Sei gregusset, Jesu guting", BWV 768.

The flowing c minor Passacaglia and Fugue, BWV 582 was one of the highlights of this CD. This is passionate, lyrical and seeking music with an opening movement written in the same style as Pachbel's familiar Canon. The large-scaled Toccata and Fugue in F major, BWV receives a compelling performance, as does the G minor Fantasie and Fugue, BWV 552. Other two-movement works include the prelude and Fugues in D major, BWV 532, a-minor, BWV 543, E flat major, BWV 552, e minor, BWV 548 and B minor, BWV 544.

In addition to these grand works, the set also includes three of Bach's trio sonatas for organ, BWV 525, 526, and 529. These works are each in three movements with fast outer movements surrounding a reflective slow movement. These works tend to be less austure than Bach's other compositions for the organ and suggest, in places, the galant, graceful style of musical composition that would soon replace Bach's baroque.

Richter plays this music with discipline and romantic feeling. He makes full and effective use of the tonal qualities of his instruments, and his playing is beautifully recorded. The liner notes, unfortunately, are sparse and not particularly informative. I am grateful for a winter weekend which left me housebound to draw inspiration from this glorious music. Lovers of Bach's organ music will want to return many times to Richter's performances.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF BACH + THE BEST OF KARL RICHTER.......2005-08-15

Here we have the best organ works of J S BACH played by the well
    known director KARL RICHTER.
He includes one Prelude and FUgue on each key form the original
ones written for organ. So we can say we have here a Well Tempered
    Organ by JS BACH.
I recommed it to all that want to listen the best of his organ
works without having to buy a complete set.As I said there are
Preludes and Fugues in all keys from c to b,Trio Sonatas,Choral
Preludes from Orgelbuechlein,Schuebler and the Leipzig 18 sets,
Choral Variations or Partitas and free pieces like the Canzona.
The negative here is the booklet for different reasons:
Mistakes on the organ building dates.
No list of stops (ALL the original LPs included the list of stops
    on the back cover).
The order of tracks in the cd is a complete non sense:instead of
following the order of the originals LPs,or the order of the
original taping during several years (the LPs were not recorded
at the same time)the tracks come with an unexplained order, they
not even watch for a combination:like including something between
the trio sonatas, they put one after the other.
The booklet indicates at the end pictures of the artist by Werner
Neumeister, and there are no pictures at all in the booklet.
It does not have any notes on the compositions included.
Now we know that the DGG company has made other CDs with Richter
including very complete booklets like that Passions, etc that have
70 or 80 pages, why then come with a set of cd with such a booklet
Karl Richter made several trips from his Munich area to Denmark
for these recordings trying to give a unified sample of J S Bach
organ works.Just think that there are plenty of other organs in
Germany to play and record, but he made as I said several trips to
Copenhagen area to record these masterpieces of the organ.
My favorite one is the Prelude and Fugue in e minor called the
Wedge. The reason is the constant changing colors in the prelude
and the virtuosity of the fuge, with its own colors making this
piece a unique color masterpiece. Here Richter goes over all using
a small instrument. All interested in the list of stops, can visit
the organ builder website:Marcussen and look for the Jaegesborg
organ, and will understand the reason why Karl Richter traveled
overseas for several years, to sample the best organ works JSBach
    ever composed for the organ.
I strongly recommed these CDs as the BEST OF BACH BY KARL RICHTER
