On this 4CD EMI Import, the great cellist Pierre Fournier performs a variety of orchestral and chamber recordings, recorded primarily in mono from the 1940s and early 50s. There are three orchestral works -- Haydn's 2nd Concerto (Kubelik/Philharmonia, 1951), Schumann's Concerto (Sargent/Philharmonia, 1956 in stereo), and Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations (Bigot/Lamoureux, 1941). Disc two, and half of disc three, contain Beethoven Cello Sonatas with the great Artur Schnabel, while the fourth disc features a variety of pieces, from Bach and Boccherini to Debussy and Ravel, with pianist Gerald Moore. I'm withholding a fifth star because the collection contains mostly historical recordings, though it certainly captures one of history's greatest cellists in his prime. With that being said, "Les Introuvables de Pierre Fournier" is a must buy for cello entusiasts.

      If this is your type of thing, you can't go wrong with this CD. The two Czech players acquit themselves exceptionally well, their playing is stylish and warm, and the modern DDD recording is full, warm and more than adequate in any regard. The Russian cello-piano literature isn't familiar territory to most classical music fans and it isn't familiar to me, either. I bought this for the Borodin, which I have enjoyed on other recordings. The large piece seems to be the Profofiev, which was written for Rostropovich. I am not a great fan of Prokofiev, finding his spiky and repetitve style often at odds with my own sensibilities. This piece has a great level of invention and keeps the listener involved throughout. The more familiar Borodin and Stravinsky are also done well. So here's a vote for some unfamiliar music you may want to add to your library if your only exposure in this genre is the Beethoven cello-piano sontatas.

      Alban Gerhardt and Steven Osborne perform brilliantly in works I have heard played well by others, but never as well, and they offer some less familiar works that are so valuable as to be worth the price of the disc by themselves. The Shostakovich cello sonata in d minor is available in a number of fine performances, but none surpasses this one for cohesion and lyrical beauty, not even Shostakovich's own performance with Daniil Shafran.

      On the disc, the Schnittke Sonata No. 1 is preceded by two cello solos--"Madrigal in Memoriam Oleg Kagan," and "Klingende Buchstaben," neither of which I had heard before, but both are characteristically knotty and powerful works. The Sonata has also been recorded before (quite nicely by Maria Kliegel, among others), but Gerhardt's account of it is more passionate, even shocking.

      The disc ends with eight short pieces by Shostakovich, arranged for cello and piano by several colleagues, based on passages from his ballet and film scores. (The whole work is "Eleven Pieces for Cello and Piano," but this recording omits three of them.) These pieces challenge the musicians with their variety of moods and tempi, but both manage them with verve and charm.

      Both Osborne and Gerhardt are now established, though they are still quite young. This CD provides proof that both are likely to have distinguished careers, both as soloists and in chamber groups. I recommend this disc enthusiastically.

        Although known today mainly for his many symphonies, Nikolai Miaskovsky (1881-1950) was a great lover of the cello, and wrote many works for the instrument. His only cello concerto, and his two cello sonatas, make up this important recording. Winning First Prize and the Gold Medal at the 8th Tchaikovsky Competition in 1986 was young cellist Kyrill Rodin's most spectacular success. His victory in Moscow confirmed his reputation as a profoundly musical virtuoso at the highest level, and immediately opened a career for him. Since then, Rodin has been the most sought-after soloist in Russia and the former Soviet states, as well as in many other European countries.
