Album Description
Liszt's setting of Via Crucis (The Way of the Cross) is bold, blunt and downright brutal at times. It forces us to confront the cruelty and indescribable suffering and sacrifice made by the Son of God out of incomprehensible love for humanity. Moments of painful tenderness and unbearable poignancy reflect the anguish of his friends and innocent bystanders as they witnessed this spectacle. Included on this disc are selected choral works of adoration, comfort and awe expressing the immeasurable love God has for the human race.
Via Crucis, Music, Franz Liszt, Richard Robertson, Church of the Holy Ghost Choir, Mary Kay Kapustka - piano, Francis Slechta - organ, John Reschl - baritone, JoAnn Stump - mezzo, The way of the cross, Franz Liszt; a rare jewel for devotion & meditation - solo piano and mixed choir and soloists

Bargain-priced invitation into Liszt's Musical World.......2003-07-19
Leslie Howard's complete recording of Liszt's Piano Music is surely one of the great musical feats of all time, but not many people would have the desire or time to listen to the whole set. So it is a great thrill that Hyperion has made a 2 disk sampler set available for the rest of us!
It is beautifully packaged, competitively priced and includes interesting notes about Liszt and the works included by the performer himself.
Mr Howard has recorded 145 solo piano CDs, which includes the 95 CDs which make up the complete Liszt piano CDs.
The set includes many well-known pieces, as well as some interesting ones you may not be familiar with.
Highly recommended.
The best of Howard's Liszt.......2002-11-11
This CD, while fulfilling the intent of covering every aspect of Liszt's piano music, also covers all of Leslie Howard's Liszt interpretations and pianistic style. Howard is one of my favorite pianists, and his best playing by far is on his recordings of the Liszt transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies, which are not included here. However, anyone who wants to get into Liszt should buy this CD before they do anything else. It really is all-encompassing.

This is outstanding!.......2007-01-14
Liszt's choral works are a bit of a innovation. While he was causing controversy with his invention of the 'symphonic poem', his sacred choral works were often criticized because of their secular background.
The Corydon Singers have performed his 'Missa Choralis' very well. Sometimes, I feel that it is quite moving-especially in the Credo, when the choir proclaims the first paragraph of the Latin text. Then it becomes slow and solemn at the part where the soloists tell of the Life of our Lord Jesus Christ. The choir once again returns to it's other tempo at the Ressurection as Christ triumph's over death.
The 'Via Crucis' is a rather odd work. It obviously, was Liszt's depiction of the fourteen stations in the catholic church starting where Jesus Christ is condemned to death and ending with his burial in the tomb. The 'Via Crucis' has instrumental 'movements' where the organ has solos, and Thomas Trotter has done a fairly well job.
I highly recomend this for those who appreciate pure and clear voices. Oh, and don't worry if you can't understand Latin or German. The paper inside gives an English translation.
Introspective Liszt.......2005-11-06
Liszt's sacred choral works are somewhat of an enigma. While his piano and orchestral music were looking forward and causing controversy, his choral music looks to the past and are, generally speaking, much more introverted and personal works. This CD has one mass, the Missa Choralis for chorus and organ, and a setting of the stations of the cross, the Via Crucis for chorus and organ.
The Missa Choralis is kind of an odd duck; obviously influenced by the Catholic Church's past, particularly the Palestrina tradition and plainsong, it also looks forward with unusual progressions and unexpected harmonies. Liszt sets the five parts of the mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Benedictus, and Agnus Dei). The choral parts on the page are very singable, rarely utilizing outlandish leaps (a Palestrinian influence?), but the notes just don't go where you expect them to go. The opening of the Kyrie and Credo are definitely chant based, but Liszt puts them in a semi-dance-like garb. The outgoing Gloria and Credo are balanced by the beautifully lyric Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. The music seems perfectly written for a cathedral. The organ does little else but support the choir and the organ could easily be omitted altogether.
Via Crucis is a setting of 14 pictures or scenes leading to the cruxifiction and eventual resurrection of Christ. Much more programmatic then the Mass, Liszt seems more able to express his innate sense of Romanticism through a visual program. The organ plays a major role as soloist in this work and lets Liszt create as many timbres as he needs. Highly emotional, the subject matter is very intense and the music portrays it well. From Jesus taking up the cross, to being nailed to the cross, to being laid in the tomb, this 30+ minute work is emotionally draining. Liszt utilizes chorus and soloists in many different combinations to tell the story, and the harmonic language is very advanced, yet the overall nature is very subdued and serious. A very unique work.
The English based Corydon Singers sing extremely well on some difficult music (they make it seem easy). The church they are performing in is very spacious, but this does not diminish the cleanliness of sound, nor does the organ drown out the chorus. While Liszt's works represented here are not the showstoppers we are used to, they provide a glimpse into a highly spiritual man. The music is intense and beautiful, great choir music by an instrumental master.

Customer Reviews:
Very Beautiful.......2007-03-17
I recieved a recording of Liszt's choral works for Christmas, and was so impressed with it that I decided to buy this one as well.
The Choir of Radio Svizzera has interpreted these tracks so beautifully-I was especially moved by the last track.
Liszt wrote three versions of the 'Via Crucis':
1. Choral
2. For mixed choir, four soloists and organ
3. With piano accompniament in the place of the organ.
The second version is very beautiful and the solo parts of the organ are grandiose, but if you feel in the mood for something lighter-buy this version.
If there is anything to complain about in this CD, it is the pianist. Diego Fasolis' performance is a bit unbalanced while Thomas Trotter in the second version is much more sturdy and moving. And why did the conductor omit the organ part in the third and final tracks? I'm sure that's not what Liszt intended.
Yet the choir is outstanding-so go ahead and buy it anyway. It's worth the price!
One more note:
Keep your eyes out for the recording of the Corydon Singers performing Liszt's Missa Choralis and Via Crucis. Together, these CD's would make an excellent purchase.
Wonderful intimacy of devotion.......2006-03-03
This piano accompaniment version of the Via Crucis is remarkable in that it shows how the intimacy of the piano makes for a nice contrast with the bombast of the organ. This is especially apparent in the solos. The writing for piano is amazingly light and sparse, yet effective. The Via Crucis is only now being recognized as the masterwork it always was (it was refused publication in Liszt's lifetime).

Liszt the Devout.......2007-06-26
Volume 8 in Hyperion's Complete Piano Music of Liszt is somewhat of an anomaly. The presence of Liszt's Christmas Tree suite, a restrained collection of pieces composed for his granddaughter, and Liszt's own solo piano versions of his Chorales is not so strange. It's the inclusion of the awe-inspiring experimental choral work, the Via Crucis, which makes this recording a bipolar one. The contrast in both substance and mood between the Christmas Tree and Via Crucis should come as a shock when listening. As haunting and authentically religious as the choral version of Via Crucis is, this dark and dissonant work becomes doubly visceral in the piano's timbre.
But first the happy stuff. Liszt's Christmas Tree suite is an amiable and tantalizing collection of pieces. About half of these are based on famous Christmas carols. Liszt's treatment of these famous melodies is tasteful and a pure joy to hear. It wouldn't hurt radio stations or concerts to plays these pieces during the Christmas season once in a while; they are accessible, brilliant and totally evocative of the Holidays. Not all of these are mere paraphrases or works based on Christmas tunes, however. Liszt has also written his own original compositions and all of them are engaging. The Little Scherzo for "Lighting the Tree" and the Carillon or "Chimes" are whimsical and sweet. "Evening Bells" and especially "Old Times," apparently "a nostalgic remembrance of the first meeting between Liszt and Princess [Carolyne] Wittgenstein," are marvelous pieces of Romantic tenderness and melancholy. The most surprising gem of this suite is the unreserved "Polish" piece, marked by rapid dance rhythms and virtuosic surges of chromatic octaves; Liszt's granddaughter, Daniela, (Hans von Bulow's daughter) must have been a daredevil at the piano if she could play this!
Although the Weihnachtslied and Chorales make their appearance here as piano versions, they are not interesting enough to garner any important commentary, especially when a Liszt masterpiece, Via Crucis, has yet to be discussed. Liszt's Via Crucis is one of his most avant-garde and utterly incredible music experiments. Liszt's decision to write music to the Crucifixion of Jesus is daring enough. But his choice of mood and effect, completely morose and raw, is so explicit that the music sounds like nothing from the 19th century. Not surprisingly, Via Crucis "was rejected by a prominent firm of publishers of religious music... and was not in fact performed or published till more than forty years after [Liszt's] death." Typical of his late period, Liszt's exploration of darkness, dissonances, and pictorial effects presage all of impressionism and 20th century music.
From the violent and jarring first Station, "Jesus is condemned to death" to the bleak and terrible sounding Second Station "Jesus is made to carry his cross," Liszt creates a terrifying atmosphere of agony and grief. Additionally, I have yet to hear a better illustration of horrible pain and sorrow than found in all three Stations about Jesus falling while carrying the cross. According to Howard, "The eighth Station, The women of Jerusalem, is one of the most idiomatic musical descriptions of weeping in the whole literature." The three Stations depicting Jesus' deprivation of clothing, the nailing to the Cross, and his death are harrowing, brutal, but absolutely beautiful. Those new to this music will find some of the most unnerving and profound musical ideas from Liszt's pen. And those familiar with this work can expect the piano version to exhibit as much expressive power as the choral version. Humphrey Searle makes the following assertion about Via Crucis, that while the nature of the work is avant-garde, "the result is not a mere experiment, but a very deeply felt and moving work." I couldn't agree more.
Bottom line: Although this Volume contains the lovely Christmas Tree suite, it is with the world-premiere recording of the piano version of Via Crucis in mind that I give this Hyperion release 5 stars. This piano version of Via Crucis is easily on par with R.W. Venezia, Unstern Sinistre Disastro, and the La Lugubre Gondolas, Liszt's blackest works.
Liszt for the holidays.......1999-09-17
I wasn't familiar with any of this music upon purchasing it, but it doesn't matter. Again, Liszt touches upon emotions other composers seemed uncomfortable expressing, or weren't aware of. Masterful playing by Leslie Howard.

British Musical Society Newsletter, Paul Shoemaker 03/2003.......2003-05-25
"A capable recording of VIA CRUCIS is always good news....an intensely heart felt document. The piano accompaniment is vivid, solid, and passionately played....The solo voices show emotional commitment and sing clearly and with musicianship....in keeping with the passion of their declamation. The recording venue acoustic is sufficient to convey a religious atmosphere and surround the performers with a soft halo but leave every musical detail clear and unblurred. THIS IS A VERY WELCOME ADDITION TO THE LISZT DISCOGRAPHY.
A Perfect Tribute to Franz Liszt, the Abbe.......2002-05-25
Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross) features Church of the Holy Ghost Choir__Richard Robertson, conductor. Mary Kay Kapustka is the piano accompanist, and a formidable accompanist is she: brilliant where required, reflective and meditative when dictated by the ispired music of Franz Liszt. She has just the right sensitivity and power to do justice to a very demanding score. The CD also contains 3 Sacred Choral Works by Liszt, that complete an exemplary tribute to one of the true musical giants of the Romantic era: FRANZ LISZT

Passion of Christ.......2007-03-01
Many a classical composer has brought us to walk along the via dolorosa. Here an ambient stylist successfully moves solitude and withrawal into his arrangements. A dense fog of gloom rules the realm of Good Friday. Light is pervasive but muted. Despondence and paranoia squeeze one another into layed tones of measured rhythms and unusual space. Impotent to help we stand beside the way of the cross. Tragically isolated souls. Robbins' task to translate the mood of events unfolding into ambient terms measures up wonderfully. This is not just music, but an active ambient force that moves us from station to station. This musical reference to an historical event carries a heavy sence of loss which pervades the CD.
