Schubert: Opera Arias

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A disc of operatic arias by Schubert? Did Schubert write great operas? No. Only an academic or devout enthusiast would want to sit through them. But did he write great opera arias? Occasionally. After all, the odd one proved a starting point for what would subsequently turn into a song. And this anthology includes a number from Alfonso und Estrella, which was later fed into Winterreise's "Tauschung." Many of the better arias are for baritone, reflecting Schubert's friendship with the singer Johann Michael Vogl, so there was plenty of scope for the baritone here, Oliver Widmer, to select rewarding items. Steering clear of the comparatively well-known Fierrabras and Die Verschworenen, Vogl has preferred to give a platform to the early operas Teufels Lustschloss and Die Freunde von Salamaka, and to fragments like Die Burgschaft and Adrast. The singing is attractive--agile, light, and sympathetically responsive--and the playing more accomplished than one might expect. It makes a welcome tag-on to Hyperion's Schubert Lieder series. The booklet comes with encyclopedic notes. --Michael White

When he was growing up, Andrea Bocelli recalls finding inspiration in a favorite recording of sacred music performed by tenor legend Franco Corelli. Bocelli--who in the meantime has come to inspire millions of fiercely loyal fans himself--returns to the genre as the guiding theme of Sacred Arias, the release of which coincides with the first English-language biography of the singer. These performances are filled with the singer's phenomenally well-known vocal signature: his flair for long, sweetly floating high notes and the gentle sense of cadence he brings to a melody. It's a mistake to compartmentalize Bocelli into a singer of "operatic" versus "popular" styles: in truth his approach is at heart the same. Lack of color and control in his phrasing remains a drawback, but the emotional empathy Bocelli evokes is never in doubt. The arias collected here sample some of the most famous devotional pieces: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Mozart's transporting "Ave Verum," as well as an arrangement of "Silent Night" in which Bocelli tries out his English. There's also a decidedly odd choice of bedfellows for a program of "sacred" music, such as a song from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder (whose "angel" is the object of an overpoweringly erotic attraction) and Handel's figurative ode to a tree, "Ombra mai fu." Still, Bocelli sings with an unfeigned directness that is sure to expand his already enormous following even further. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2007-01-12

This is my second copy of this CD, I burned the first one out!!
Andrea Bocelli has a very gorgeous voice that is a gift from above. His voice is not affected or braggadoccio but naturally magnificent. I could and do start my day listening to this spiritually uplifting CD almost everyday. It is a wonderful way to get off to a pleasant peaceful start, but also a nice way to come home in the evening if you have a CD player in your car. I highly recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars Andrea Bocelli-Sacred Arias.......2006-08-25

Excellent listening. Voice quality and tone is superb. Brings tears to my eyes when I envision listening to this in a church setting.

4 out of 5 stars An "experience" of sacred arias more than "listening" of sacred arias.......2006-04-28

I bought this CD's special edition with DVD, and I am impressed by bocelli's singing in this album. I have heard many voices singing sacred songs, and christmas songs, but very few singers can achieve the "sacred atmosphere" that bocelli devotes when he sings. He may not have a "strong" voice as opera singers, but I think singing these sacred songs, devoting the "sacred atmosphere" to the audience is much more important, the voice actually is just a tool that helps a singer to achieve the result. For real, I have heard some CD by some chorus that perform sacred arias, but they did not move me as much as this CD does, mostly not even close. Personally I like "O come all ye faithful", "silent night", all "ave maria"'s, "domine deus", "cujus animam" the most. When I listen Bocelli's singing I focus on what he tries to devote in singing more than his voice color, because in terms of voice color he surely cant be compared with pavarotti or domingo, so why compares? The way of listening him and listening real opera singers is different man. But the reason I gave only this CD four stars is that I have heard several sacred arias from this album performed by his voice teacher, the legendary tenor Franco Corelli. I tried not to compare both...but I cant, not because Bocelli sings bad, he is already excellent, just Corelli is TOO excellent that cant be described by human language (well I think even Pavarotti is not even close to Franco Corelli, but this is just my opinion). Anyway if you want to "experience" the true beauty of sacred arias, this CD is highly recommended. And this is also a very good sacred aria album for beginning listeners who want to broaden their musical taste to sacred arias.

5 out of 5 stars amazing talent.......2006-03-25

worth the price the songs are breathtaking and talent is indescribable

5 out of 5 stars Perfect arias for the perfect voice.......2006-03-04

These are just terrific. How does Andrea acheive the range he does, and the power he has, without sounding too heavy or too light? His voice sounds like the perfect voice for these perfect arias.

I have noticed one concern with the CD. I have heard several clicks scattered here and there in the songs -- but the CD is clean and I feel confident it is not the machine. Has anyone else noticed this?

5 out of 5 stars A spiritual experience.......2003-11-27

The DVD is the full 77 minute concert with two featurettes previously released alone. The CD is the full 72 minute concert previously released alone, except that two bonus tracks have been added. The audio quality of each one is quite good. (If you have a Dolby Digital stereo, then you must go into the setup menu on the DVD to select Dolby Digital sound. The default music track is the stereo 2.0 sound.) The video quality of the DVD is astonishing.

The DVD gives the feeling that you are in the church with the other worshippers. It literally sends chills up and down my spine. I highly recommend this CD/DVD combination Special Edition while it is still available.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest treasures.......2003-06-02

Fresh and supple voice, amazing breath control, incredible expressions, mature musicality. I have listened to some of the songs sung by real sopranos (meaning mature female), and I admit that they do have their own greatness, but this boy soprano seems to be far more exciting. He's got unbeatable, invincible energy and drive, which, I guess, only teenagers can possess, and the way he builds up the intensity is awe-striking.
He has a total control over the high notes also. You will hear the most beautiful pianissimo, soft, expressive, and floaty, in those otherwise ear-spliting pitches. His runs are also incomparable, very clear, driven, profound, and accurate. You will have to hear them at least once in your life time!

I have let my two teenage nephews, who knew nothing but rock music, listen to this CD, and lo and behold, they couldn't stop listening to it. We were on a trip to Yellow Stone at that time, a long boring drive, and they kept on asking me to play it over and over. We ended up listening to it several hours straight every day for 3 days! A different kind of excitement from rock music, every time the fast runs came, they couldn't stop dancing in the car mimicking them. The whole CD made them simply happy and jubilant. As a result, the otherwise boring long drive became a very happy, fun trip.

The only drawback is that his words are not very clear, and at times the accent is poor. But his musicality and mature expressions off-set it. Even if you don't understand the words, these songs will surely make your day. This is one of those CDs that proves that classical music can be much more exciting and fun than popular music. Good for kids, teenagers, and adults.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect voice.......2002-12-02

Mr. Mehta is a countertenor now. When he was a boy soprano his voice was incomparable, in my view, one which answers to the myth of a Castrato's voice. Such gentle and even register throughout the range which surely arouses the jealousy of any soprano.

Mr. Mehta demonstrated sophisticated and precoscious techniques which made his gifted timbre even more unparalleled. His diction is not quite crisp. My conjecture that it's due to his nasal technique, not unfamiliar to a countertenor, the unique head voice suited to a boy's changing voice. Maybe, also because of this, the color of Mr. Mehta's voice on this CD is especially touching - woeful but never strident nor forced in high notes. The aria "If God Be for Us" is most sentimental and brings an aetheist to tears!

5 out of 5 stars Wow - the range of this young man's voice!.......2000-04-18

I've listened to this marvel repeatedly and found a great satisfaction in the choice of music and personal stylistic of these pieces. I hope there are more young men inspired to give their voices a try as a result of Bejun's work here...I especially enjoyed the spiritual selctions, esp. "If God be for us..." Please don't cheat yourself of the opportunity to hear this!

5 out of 5 stars An awesome display of vocal fireworks.......2004-05-21

If it's a tenor voice you want to hear look no further. Franco Corelli is undisputedly one of (if not the) greatest tenors of the 20th century. His voice is capable of unbelievable power and exquisite pianissimo's. The broad range of religious arias, Italian songs and arias is enough to keep anyone's attention and have them panting for more. I recommend this wholeheartedly. Enjoy...

2 out of 5 stars A Great singer, BUT..........2002-11-05

First of all: in my opinion I think it would be hard to find any other tenor with more thrilling sound than Franco Corellis.
But what goes wrong when it comes to his studiorecordings? It sounds too often that he wants to surpass oneself, like he wants to give us even more broadly tones all the way up( of cource his high c in "Granada" is good and the ending of "sole mio" is unbelievable) and it only will go at the expense of his overtones, because he uses too much muscles and is too heavy. The result of it: you get tired listening to him. And for Heavens sake: Whats the use for him to sound more manful?!!!!
Of course some songs here are good, but maybe only 10 out of 44, and thats not good enough for such a GREAT singer.
At last, why does he sing "off the voice" in Bach/Gounods Ave Maria? It`s so unnecessary, beacause he really had breath enough!
In my conclusion I will not recommend this recording, Because it`s such a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Review..........2002-01-18

I own this C.D. and I have listened to it many, many times. Allthough I understand the feelings of the reviewer saying the songs are sang by the same fiery tone, I don't understand them fully. I would come to this conclusion if I would have listened to this the songs on a (too) soft volume.

If you really listen to it, not as backround music , but so you can hear it well and you aren't doing anything else, you will notice with how much passion a lot of the songs are sang by Corelli. Core 'ngrato is filled with passion, and I think Corelli is unsurpassed with that song. He didn't have lack of musicality either... Perhaps some more lessons would have done him good, but almost everyone could use some more. I even say that listening to some of Corelli's recordings is like having a singing lesson.

I would really recommend this C.D. if you are interested in his voice. the Core 'ngrato, Ave Maria and O sole Mio are great for instance. If you want to try full opera recordings try Il trovatore, Norma or Andrea Chenier

4 out of 5 stars Unequalled Neopolitan Songs.......2001-05-16

Franco Corelli, who sang from 1951 to 1975, was the greatest tenore di forza of the postwar era. A powerful and exciting singer, never a subtle, elegant, or refined one, he had his detractors (who called him crude, vulgar, self-indulgent, and who lambasted his execrable French), but there can be no argument about the quality of his voice, a big, vibrant tenor with a thrilling timbre (often described as rich, dark, or baritonal) and a brilliant, secure top that must have been the envy and despair of other tenors. A nervous performer repeatedly subject to pre-performance jitters and anxiety attacks (a wag once said of him that Corelli could always think of more reasons not to sing than to sing), once onstage he was a generous singer who gave fully of himself and, like Caruso, poured out his magnificent voice unstintingly, never holding back.

The voice itself was one of the glories of the generously-endowed operatic scene of the Fifties and Sixties, and one of greatest tenor voices of the century. Herbert von Karajan said of Corelli, "A voice of heroic power, yet with great beauty of tone; darkly sensuous, mysteriously melancholic . . . but above all, a voice of thunder and lightning, fire and blood." Harold C. Schonberg, senior music of the New York Times, reviewing Corelli's Metropolitan debut in 1961, noted that his voice "has something of an exciting animal drive about it, and when Mr. Corelli lets loose, he can dominate an ensemble," and later described his voice as "a force of nature, an act of God, the vocal equivalent of an earthquake, volcano or hurricane." The distinguished musicologist Paul Henry Lang writing in the New York Herald-Tribune called Corelli "a latter-day Caruso." Alan Rich of the New York Herald-Tribune wrote of him, "There is no tenor in modern times, Italian or otherwise, whose voice rings out with greater vibrancy, whose every tone carries with it emotion at white heat. The sounds he makes, seemingly without effort, are dazzlingly bright, urgent, and communicative." Since Corelli's retirement we haven't heard anything remotely like him, and those of us who know his voice (and Bjorling's) can perhaps be pardoned for finding the "three tenors" so popular today somewhat anemic in comparison.

I have been an admirer of Corelli, a collector of his recordings, and a follower of his career since the late 1950s (when he had not yet sung in America, and his only recordings were Italian Cetra imports). I have just about everything he recorded. There is no tenor voice before the public today equal to this one, and I urge you not to miss it.

But the two-CD set under review here is not the place to start. If you are new to Corelli, I recommend the EMI single CD "Heroes" or the EMI two-CD set "Franco Corelli," with their heavy doses of his typical operatic fare, as ideal introductions to this rewarding singer. Corelli was above all a creature of the opera house, in his element singing Puccini, Verdi, and verismo Italian opera. The set under review here, misleadingly entitled "Songs and Arias," contains in fact only one aria, a very atypical one: Handel's "Ombra mai fu" from "Serse" (made famous by a Caruso recording). Indeed, some of the composers represented here-Handel, Schubert, Bach, Mozart, Rossini-are in fact stylistically very far from the kind of singing one associates with Corelli. A couple of the songs, "Because" and Grieg's "I Love Thee," are mildly comical in Corelli's overpoweringly Italianate and operatic renditions. But this is a set well worth owning for anyone who knows and likes Corelli. There is a first-rate Ingemisco from the Verdi Requiem, the traditional religious songs are all sung with seriousness and devotion, and most important, the bulk of the set comprises Neopolitan songs, which Corelli sings superbly. (I think he sings them better than anyone.) Of these my own favorite is "Core n'grato," a powerful song, and Corelli's recording of it is unequalled: there is a prodigious outpouring of bronzen tone here that must be heard to be believed. It's true that some of the orchestral arrangements are corny and dated, but with gloriously gutsy, full-blooded singing like this, from one of the greatest tenor voices of the century in its prime (all the recordings here are from 1961 to 1965), I can overlook the arrangements. These two CDs are very generously filled (22 songs,77 minutes for one and 23 songs, 78 minutes for the other), and include, I believe, everything Corelli recorded for EMI that wasn't opera.

If you like Corelli, if you like Neopolitan songs, you'll want this. But it's not the place to start in appreciating Franco Corelli.

2 out of 5 stars Not a Corelli fan and even less now after hearing these CDs........2001-01-17

Corelli's voice was quite large, but I'm not very sure about it's beauty. He is much better in operas, but on these discs,I find his singing annoying. To the reviewer who wrote the Major Disappointment review and included Di Stefano in those not having a beautiful voice,I'd have to say that you obviously don't know what you're talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional in every way.......2001-10-11

Coloratura repertoire is difficult to compile. You would think that a "best of sample" just wouldn't flow. Well, sometimes old-timers shrug and this CD shows you why. The repertoire selection is diverse, ranging from arias with full orchestra to intimate art songs. And Ms. Dobbs is at the height of her purity of sound and technique.

Dobbs is currently a judge for the Marian Anderson Vocal Competition. Hearing this CD places you in a different time when she made such an impact on music-making as a whole. This CD is great for the vocal student learning new songs and diction, and at the same time for the expert seeking quality. Simply exceptional, it's a CD you can't just copy/burn from a friend.

A friend who is an opera buff and something of a historian introduced me to this pioneer and almost forgotten voice. A Marian Anderson contemporary,Ms.Dobbs is a diva in her own right with a sweet and powerful voice. A joy and thrill to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Eddy Sings Opera!...Mozart...Haydn...Wagner..and More!..Fabulous Find For Fans.......2006-07-20

Fans of Nelson Eddy's classic musical films, will be in heaven when they hear his golden tones on this collection of the Operatic Arias and Concert Songs recorded between 1939 and 1944.
Eddy was not what you would call a booming Baritone, but wow, what a voice. Sweet, smooth, breathtaking. Gorgeous!

His masterful rendition of the Arias, and Concert Songs in Italian, English, German and French are impeccable. Whatever the emotion, sadness, joy, etc, Eddy captures it. You will feel the story in the words. Some are very solemn and moving, others are upbeat and will leave you smiling. Enjoy 2 from Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro"(Non Piu Andrai/Se Vuol Ballare), Haydn's "The Creation",2 from Wagner("Jerum! Jerum"/"Evening Star") ,Moussorgsky, several from Tchaikovsky including "Don Juan's Serenade. You can see the complete list of 20 tracks in the buying info, but some of the other highlights, I thoroughly enjoyed are Schubert's "Serenade" and "Ave Maria", "Chanson Du Toreador", Bizet(from Carmen)and "Hopak"(Moussorgsky).

The original recordings are over 60 years old. This CD is a wonderful digital transfer. The album will give you over 70 minutes of enjoyment. It also come with a nice little bio booklet, detailing the singing career of Nelson Eddy, and the track listings, with the composer and the year Eddy first recorded it. The only thing it is missing, is the credits for the fine orchestras and musicians accompanying Eddy. I would have liked to have known who they were. None the less a fabulous and 5 star find for fans of Nelson Eddy, and a nice taste of some familiar Operatic pieces.

Enjoy....Laurie

5 out of 5 stars Nelson Eddy's operatic recordings.......2004-01-07

This CD contains all of Nelson Eddy's recordings of classical music. However, given that he recorded over 200 songs, this is a small amount of his recorded legacy. Also note that, other than the Mozart (Italian), the Strauss (German), and the last 4 selections in French, the rest of these selections were recorded in English, although Eddy could and did sing them in the original languages. Despite what the previous reviewer said, these recordings are not from "the early years", when Nelson Eddy was an opera singer. These recordings are from the 1940's. Nelson Eddy had performed in his last operas in 1935, and he was almost never associated with actual opera on film. He performed yearly in concerts, solely of classical repertoire, from before his national fame, until the early 1950's. He was a very popular radio performer in the 1930's and 1940's. He sang many more operatic pieces/classical songs on radio (usually in their original language) which he never recorded. I, for one, regret that he did not record more from his classical repertoire, because that essential part of appreciating his art is mostly gone forever. My point is, that these songs do not give a full sense of the wide range of Eddy's work in the non-popular areas of song.
The liner notes are pretty good, although there are some errors in them.

5 out of 5 stars Nelson Eddy : The Opera Years.......2001-10-01

Ah Sweet Mystery. A trip back in time. Is there any music medium Nelson Eddy did not excel in? First opera, concerts, movies, radio, tv, nightclubs. He was the master of them all. This is a great introduction to the early years when he was opera's leading and most exciting baritone.

5 out of 5 stars Arias by the Masters sung by a Master.......2006-02-24

If you like opera sung well, here's one for your collection! These arias don't strike me as too serious which makes this CD fun to listen to, especially "Ich moechte wohl der Kaiser sein."

5 out of 5 stars A Grand and Humorous Outing with Thomas Hampson.......2005-10-26

Thomas Hampson just seems to refine his beautiful voice and intelligent musicality as the years pass. This fine album is no exception. He has elected to perform comic arias ('basso buffo' if you will) that most baritones save for their declining years when the glory of their voice is waning. But here is Hampson, his voice sounding ever more lush and rich throughout the register, adding his musical insights to this varied group of arias.

Though equally at home in all languages on the concert and operatic stage, Hampson's affinity for the German language reflects his living there for so many years. Two arias by Beethoven - `Mit Mädeln sich vertragen' and `Prüfung des Küssens' - are miniatures in style and vocal acting. In two arias (alternative versions) from 'Cosi Fan Tutte' he rolls his Italian sound with his consonants, making each version of the aria a prize. But for this listener the glory of the recital is the rarely heard 'Sei mir gegrüßt, O Sonne' from Schubert's 'Alfonso und Estrella' - ardently sung and vocally resplendent.

The important presence of Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus cannot be emphasized enough. This is period music playing at its finest. The balance between Hampson and Harnoncourt goes far beyond studio technicalities: these two fine artists understand their united mission and produce a unity of vision that defies comparison! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

5 out of 5 stars All the qualities of the others put together!.......2005-09-17

Herr Slezak could summon at his expressive will the full color of Caruso, and surpassed it as Siegfried. He has the mezza-voce of Gigli, but Slezak's is a finer sound and whereas Gigli would get stuck in his mezza-voce (a sign of falsetto), Slezak was able to not only swell it but go from a fortissimo and in the same breath go to a mezza voce of pure gold. Finally, he had the open-throated richness and superior tonal color of Bjoerling, but Slezak's breathing was never shallow and his was a much much more vastly heroic and present sound. Above all, his expression was heartfelt and he made the German language sound ever so beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Magical recordings by the "other" Tenor of the Century.......2000-04-22

For those of you who wonder if Caruso had a rival, the answer is Yes and his name was Leo Slezak. Born the same year as Caruso (1873), Slezak's voice was even more powerful (so powerful, in fact, that the high notes consistently "blast" the old recording process), even more poetic (he sang EVERYTHING, from Mozart to Wagner), even more well-blended (he could sing piano, pianissimo, forte, fortissimo, sometimes all the the same phrase), and much more musical. This 2-CD set covers the years 1928-29, when Slezak was 55-56 years old, yet both the power and the poetic magic of the voice are still intact. By modern standards, a few of his lieder performances don't work (too much rubato in "Die Post," for instance, slurred figures in "Wohin?" and not enough dramatic bite in "Zueignung"), but when compared to Caruso he is incomparably the greater artist. Particularly wonderful are his versions of "Nacht und Traume," "Die Nussbaum," Schubert's "Serenade" and "An die Musik," and the arias from "La Juive," "Pagliacci" and "Otello." (In fact, Slezak was THE preferred Otello in the years before Zenatello and Melchior: he sang the role under both Gustav Mahler and Arturo Toscanini.) The Wagnerian excerpts are conducted rather slackly, yet to hear Slezak "build" the music during the complete Rome Narrative from "Tannhauser" is to realize how much greater he was, not only than Caruso but of Melchior as well. Just as there was only one Caruso, there was only one Slezak; and if your imagination can fill in the gaps in Caruso's timbre, you can certainly imagine Slezak's rocket-like high notes reverberating in a theatre with the palpable force of an earthquake....on top of which, Slezak caressed words like a poet and sang straight from the heart, without the least pretense or artifice. There was no one else like him in the history of music, and his influence on the following generation of German tenors (Tauber, Wittrisch, Volker, Groh and Roswaenge) was as powerful as Caruso's on the Italians. Highly recommended!
