The Baroque Album

Editorial Reviews

The great guitarist John Williams has been around the block several times with much of this music, and some of his performances sound as though he's getting a little tired of it. He plays the guitar extremely well, as always; you will never hear a better-executed performance of the Bach Chaconne, and the difficulties of the Scarlatti Sonatas hardly seem to exist for him. Some of the pieces new to his recorded repertory--Telemann, Roncalli, Couperin--are played with all the expression I want to hear. While this is a good disc, though, it's not the best of John Williams. --Leslie Gerber

Amazon.com essential recording

Better known as the "White Album," this was meant to be the record that brought them back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. Instead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of rock's towering figures. But even McCartney could still rock, and the amazement on "Helter Skelter" was that he had vocal cords at the end. From Beach Boys knock-offs to reggae and to the unknown ("Revolution #9"), this has it all. Some records have legend written all over them; this is one. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Breaking the Barriers.......2007-06-29

This was the album where the Beatles grew up and moved into a more mature and less organised sound. That road had begun with "A Day In a Life" and "Within You Without You" and "Good Morning" in Sgt Peppers - but the Beatles were still a smart pop rock band then.

In the White Album, there is a wonderful sense of a loss of control - and yet this is still the Beatles at their creative peak. Not caring what people think, they're just playing to the maximum of their abilities. And shattering barriers.

The power of their varied personalities comes through. And different sides of their personality. Who cares about anything except the music I'm feeling now? seems to be the prevalent thought here. The White Album is the Beatles Matured - who would have imagined that the Beatles would create "Helter Skelter"? or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...Epic stuff that certified that the Beatles could rock. "Dear Prudence" and "Sexy Sadie" and "Blackbird" are eminently listenable. In fact - apart from some ditties and departures - the album is strikingly distinctive as a playground of sounds - it is dynamic from one end to the other and still eminently listenable and deep.

How do you define genius? This is one hard album to ignore.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the Beatles Best Work.......2007-06-27

Wow...this brings back great memories. The songs are so diverse and unusual, showing their true talent and creative song writing abilities. The songs are fun and strange all at the same time. It is one of my favorites of the Beatles. When you can have "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Rocky Raccoon" and "Blackbird" in one package....what more can you ask!

5 out of 5 stars It's Four Solo Albums & Still Great.......2007-06-23

This was on sale way Back in November 1968, for $5.00. That was the best five Bucks I ever spent. By 1968 after Eight years Together, The Beatles had just about seen it all, and they were very close to imploding. But, Lucky for all of us John, Paul, George & Ringo were on top of their Game and with the "White Album" they Presented their Best Songwriting and their greatest Playing over the Span of the 30 Tracks Here.
From: "Back in the USSR" all the way thro' to "Goodnight" and my favorite Track in reverse: "Revolution #9" you get a Beatle Album So Different & so Bold in it's Scope and Range from anything else they Gave us. We were Very Lucky to Have this band on the Planet from: 1964-70. It will never happen again in our Lifetime, But here it is, in all it's Glory...

There are almost 1,000 reviews posted here and About 95 Per-Cent of those Reviews are Gonna tell you how GREAT this is, and it is, Don't waste your Time Reading About this Record, BUY IT NOW.

Good luck on locating this exceptional recording, sound, material stereo separation.

5 out of 5 stars My second-favorite Beatles' album.......2007-06-12

This has long been my favorite Beatles' album second only to 'Revolver.' Due to its massive length, there are numerous different musical genres represented, enough to please every type of fan. It also seems to be their album with the least amount of songs played on the average oldies or classic rock station. Since there were no singles drawn from this album, these aren't songs the casual or new fan is likely to be very familiar with due to their lack of radio representation. And while some people do feel that it would have been a lot tighter and more manageable had it been just a single album, the problem is that no two people can agree on just what should have been excluded and included. (Probably my top vote for what should have been left off is the inane rubbishy "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.")

The songs range from rough hard rock such as "Yer Blues," "Helter Skelter," and "Everybody's Got Something to Hide, Except Me and My Monkey," poppy songs such as "Martha My Dear" and "Don't Pass Me By" (the first song Ringo wrote entirely on his own), country-western-style songs like "Rocky Raccoon" (though I usually skip this one now), softer songs like "Long, Long, Long" (one of my favorites), "Julia," and "Blackbird," and songs that are just plain weird, like "Wild Honey Pie," "Glass Onion," and "Revolution 9." Being very into the avant-garde, I've always loved "Revolution 9" and have even listened to it on repeat a number of times. While it's obviously not to everyone's tastes, one has to admit that this is a fascinating musical collage. (The placement of "Good Night," the final track, right after this song has also got to be the biggest juxtaposition on any Beatles' album ever!) And since a lot of these songs were not recorded with all four bandmembers together in the studio, it often feels like a collection of their solo songs instead of a team effort by a real band. However, this also serves to demonstrate how they had grown as musicians since the early Sixties, with a unique musical style emerging for each of them. In particular we can hear how George had grown by leaps and bounds, proving he had come into his own as a great singer and songwriter. Additionally, the often stripped-down sound can feel kind of refreshing after the overproduced songs of the previous year, whose core essences had been smothered by layer after layer and overdub and overdub, which also gives a lot of them a more dated feel instead of sounding truly classic and timeless.

Above all, this is doubtless in the Top 5 of their greatest albums, and with enough musical styles to keep everyone happy, should be highly recommended to anyone interested in branching out and exploring songs that are less pop-oriented and radio-friendly than the songs on their more-widely-played albums. It's also very special to me since it was almost the last album I ever heard in this lifetime, having played it the night before I was almost killed in a very serious car accident.

Released in 1969, just eight months after In Search of the Lost Chord, Threshold continues the Moody Blues's journey as cosmic seekers but in a less exotic manner. Here, Justin Hayward packs away the sitar and the band has swept most of the mystical and Eastern influences under the Kilim rug, replacing them with a science-fictional search for meaning and futuristic production methods. As on two earlier albums, Graeme Edge regales listeners with esoteric poetry, this time adding a whimsical, ironic edge to his ponderous verse. The songs have also undergone a similar overhaul, allowing the band's talent for melody to overcome the psychedelic whirls that embellished the earlier albums. John Lodge's assertive bass takes control of the bucolic "Lovely to See You," Roy Thomas's deceptively cheerful "Dear Diary," and the upbeat "Lazy Days," which also contains an unexpected lyrical sting. Indeed, the entire album is underpinned with a wistful melancholy as the grandiose rockers capture the bittersweet fleeting moments of the '60s. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars Tour de force.......2007-06-06

This album truly is an absolute work of art. Others here have offered up fantastic reviews of this album, so I am only going to briefly comment on the songs that struck a particularly strong chord with me, whether good or bad.

I can honestly say that out of the thirteen tracks, there is only one that I really don't care for: 'Dear Diary'. Who knows, maybe I might learn to love this song someday, and if I do change my mind, then I will most definitely alter my negative review. But right at this moment, it's the one and only song that keeps this album from being a perfect 10 in my book. Usually- and with good reason- I am such a fan of Ray Thomas' work, but this song does absolutely nothing to present this man's awesome vocal abilities in a favorable light. Perhaps if he had sang it differently, ie in his normal vocal tone, it would most assuredly have been a great song. The tune, melody, and lyrics are quite good actually. It's the "way" that Ray sings it that turns me off- sorry Ray. (I still love and miss you, dear sir). Ray does redeem himself very well on 'Lazy Day', a sweet little ode to the peaceful times to be had on an English Sunday afternoon. It's not an intricate or deep song by any means but it has its merits.

Now on to the awesome Mr. Hayward's ballads: Justin's 'Lovely to See You' is a concert staple/favorite for a very good reason: it's a truly lovely, understated song that just makes you plain feel good! 'Never Comes the Day' is one of my favorite Justin penned/lead vocal songs. I had heard it often described as being slightly weird, the lyrics "but you WILL love me tonight" in particular. Perhaps I'm a little slow but I just don't get that feeling from this song. To me, this song is about a man in love who is honest enough to admit that there's "stuff" hidden inside of him that isn't pretty, may be hard to love, and perhaps should be kept hidden. This could be speaking of any of us, myself included. Another reason for me to admire this song: John's background vocals. Any time (on the same song) that he can sing that fab falsetto AND he and Justin can sing harmony is an oh-so-good time to be had by my eager ears. In rounding out Hayward's songs, I have only one word to adequately describe "Are You Sitting" (co-written by Ray) MAGICAL!!

What to say about my dear John's two songs: 'Send Me No Wine' is a great, catchy tune, albeit a MUCH too short one(why oh why John?) This one has a decidely country feel, flavor, and sound to it. This little gem could have come straight out of Nashville in the late 1960's and been right at home here in the Southern United States. This is truly something so very different from anything I've ever heard from him, though he still rocks it out as well. I believe John's songwriting muse short-changed him on this album, as his next great offering 'To Share My Love' is a much too brief song as well. "Makes me feel good" is how Lodge starts this ditty and it does make me feel quite good indeed to hear it, even though Pinder leads most of the vocals on this one. It;s still a good little song but I wanted to hear more. John's rocking bassline is excellent as is Graeme's accompanying drum beat. Love ya Lodgie!

Rounding out my favorites on OTTOAD: Mike Pinder's 'Have You Heard/ The Voyage'(I consider the two to be one song). I will freely admit that I am not a huge Pinder fan, but I HAVE to give the man his much-deserved props. This is, bar none, his best song EVER and it is an absolute pleasure for me to listen to it. The man has a way with words, not to mention his unsurpassed skills on every keyboard instrument known to mankind. He will forever be the Mellotron king. His voice ain't altogether half bad either. What I appreciate the most about this song is that fact that ALL of the Moodies awesome skills and talents as musicians are on pristine display here. I have only seen one "live" (it was a video, sadly) performance of HYH/TV and it quite frankly blew me away, just in seeing how passionately and ferevently the guys played their respective instruments. Oh man, what I wouldn't give to have seen this live "back in the day". If God would grant me the opportunity to go back in time to see only ONE vintage Moodies performance, it would be this song! Graeme Edge's often overlooked drum work is an absolute marvel to see and hear. Ray's flute solos have never been played with such understated zeal. Pinder is so very passionate on the piano and organ, or is it just the Mellotron? Regardless, the man has never sounded better. John's very dirty, low-down, funky, hard-driving (did I use enough adjectives?) bass work is just stellar, especially when played in unison with Edge's drum- truly a treat for the senses! The guys make me tired just watching them play, at what is at times, a frenetic pace. Can you tell that I dearly love this song?!

In closing I'd like to say that this is an album that the Moody Blues can and should be VERY proud of. It is truly a masterpiece created by the minds, hands and voices of five incredible men who are all living legends and supremely talented at their craft. If you don't already have it, get it- TODAY!

5 out of 5 stars Another Stellar Performance.......2007-04-15

I rate this as my third favorite Moody Blues album behind In Search Of The Lost Chord and Seventh Sojourn . Are You Sitting Comfortably ? is my second favorite Moody Blues song . The first half of the album has some of the most pop oriented songs that the band ever did in it's second incarnation . The last 4 cuts must be listened to as a single piece . This is the first of the "art rock" bands and they were paving the way for the rest of them . It's amazing to think that they were able to get noticed at all by the general public in an era when radio stations refused to play ANY songs that ran over 3 minutes in length . This album is a facinating part of history and should be in every Moody Blues fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Title Says it All!.......2007-04-15

This is another Moody Blues masterpiece. it ranks in my eyes right by their ultimate achievement: "To our Children's Children's Children."

Few in my generation have not experienced the magic of this album. Every song on it is gold, and the continuity between the songs is perfect. The blending of classic orchestral instruments and rock and roll instruments is perfection. Every ballad is a work of beauty.

To feel good being seranaded by harmonizing voices blended with rich sonic tapestries is the delight of the Moody Blues that will never become outdated.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly good remaster.......2007-02-16

I used to listen to this and other Moody Blues albums on both vinyl and 8-track endlessly in. I *finally* got around to getting the CDs recently and the remaster of this album is STUNNING. I'm always a bit afraid of remastering because often the mix changes to suit the engineers or the artists as they think "it should have been". My opinion of this remaster is that it's a beautiful technology update that doesn't disturb the original music from the 1960's. The master tapes must have been in great shape, this is nearly flawless.

If you liked the Moody Blues back then, the remasters will blow you away.

5 out of 5 stars On the Threshold of a Masterpiece.......2007-01-30

The Moodies put together a melotron thick album. Have You Heard parts 1 & 2 are worth the price of admission. A preview for the next album which is......

Forrest Gump (1994) is one of the most successful films ever made, winning Tom Hanks his second successive Best Actor Oscar (he won the previous year for Philadelphia) as well as claiming the Best Picture Oscar and many other awards and nominations, including several for music. A unique fable of American life from the 1950s to the 80s, the film blends comedy, drama, war, romance and groundbreaking special effects into a social and political portrait of the passing years, all seen through the eyes of the intellectually challenged but immensely likeable Forrest Gump. The soundtrack is a double album featuring 31 classic pop tunes plus a suite from Alan Silvestri's rich orchestral music, represented more completely on the companion score album. Opening with Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog", this is a fine anthology of three decades of American music, taking in everything from Joan Baez's "Blowin' In The Wind" to Aretha Franklin's "Respect", The Mammas and The Papas' "California Dreamin'" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson". Here also is Scott McKenzie with "San Francisco", plus Jefferson Airplane, the Supremes, Lynyrd Skynrd and many more. Like American Graffiti (1973), this is one of the great pop soundtracks, happily at home in just about any music collection. --Gary S. Dalkin

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't look accurate.......2007-05-10

I don't own this soundtrack but I've seen the movie a ton of times. I don't see Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" on here. It was playing in the scene where Jenny almost committed suicide by standing on a ledge at some hotel. And "Stoned Love" wasn't even in the movie. Isn't this supposed to be a soundtrack for a movie, not the "best hits of...?"

4 out of 5 stars a great soundtrack!.......2007-03-29

i was so happy with this soundtrack - almost every song on here brings back memories of a great time. you can sing along with everything, and it has music for every mood.

A gem of an anthology, a definitive compilation of some of the seminal rock songs of the 60s and 70s. Each song is so evocative of the era. This 2-CD set is like a precious timecapsule. This is the CD I'd bring with me to a desert island.

You want relaxing classical music that'll soothe your soul but won't lull you into sleep? Here's a double CD for you. The Most Relaxing Classical Album in the World ... Ever! does its best to cover both well-worn classical favorites (Bach's "Air on the G String," Pachelbel's "Cannon," Debussy's "Clair de Lune") and some eclectic left-field choices (an excerpt from Górecki's Symphony No. 3, Jocelyn Pook's "Blow the Wind," and Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. The performances of most of these excerpts are top-notch--artists include Sir Neville Marriner, James Galway, Jacqueline du Pré and the Philadelphia Orchestra--and there's enough variety here for everyone. --Edward Garabedian

4 out of 5 stars Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

5 out of 5 stars Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

3 out of 5 stars Too much opera.......2007-01-10

If it wasn't for the opera this would be a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

5 out of 5 stars TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.

Amazon.com essential recording

The late Harry Nilsson's creative and commercial peak, this LP showcases the singer-songwriter's lighthearted worldview to best advantage. It remains one of the best, most consistent, and least dated albums from an early-'70s era not known for underplayed, unpretentious subtlety. Here you get strong interpretive singing (how ironic that this tunesmith's biggest hits were covers, such as Badfinger's "Without You"), inventive arranging (the hilarious, marble-mouthed "Coconut"), and distinctive melodicism (check out that lovely paean to the stars, "The Moonbeam Song"). In keeping with the domesticated figure on the cover--complete with housecoat, cigarette, and waiting refrigerator--the mood is laidback and homey, and there's a palpable feeling of comfort in both the production and the material. Nilsson's multi-octave voice was never so full of life. Other albums (like the John Lennon-produced Pussy Cats and the essential Nilsson Sings Newman) have their moments, but this is where to begin any Nilsson collection. (The 2004 reissue boasts superb remastering and six bonus cuts: one unreleased original tune, three demos, a Spanish version of "Without You," and a true oddity called "Lamaze.") --Don Harrison

5 out of 5 stars Blast from the past worth hearing again........2007-07-08

I forgot all about this album and the artist for that matter. And then a friend played me a track on his iPod and I flew back to my past. When I got home, I hit Amazon in my bookmark bar and ordered this Cd immediatly and anxiously waited for it to arrive. It seems like the days are gone that an eclectic and quirky artist like Nilsson can get a record deal and have any success. Thanks be to the people that reissue albums like this with superb sound quality and extra tracks for a better look at a pop gem.
There is great deal of good music coming out these days, but sometimes it seems as if it is only scratching the surface of whats already come out in the past. This is a great example of 70's pop that should be heard now.
Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Very good Spanish version for Without you !.......2007-06-18

Congratulations for this release !!
The Spanish version for "Without you" is very good and I think it is still unknown for many fans. This album must be included in our musical collections.

5 out of 5 stars From The Vault.......2007-06-09

This original version of "jump into the fire" still gets more than my toe tapping, "without you" still brings a lump to the throat. Buy It, Buy It Now.

5 out of 5 stars Classic album, packed with extra tracks.......2007-06-01

For some reason, whenever I read about Harry Nilsson, he's always pegged as something of an 'adult contemporary' artist. This label, to me, has always carried an air of condescension--too old to appeal to the youngsters, only fit for mellow adult consumption. Perhaps he earned the label with his early work, especially his most well-known hit cover of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'," but to claim that Harry Nilsson, especially on this album, primarily targets a pasteurized market of complacent square "adults" is an insult to both the younger listeners to whom this great music appeals, as well as the so-called "adults" to whom it might also appeal. As the years have proven, Nilsson Schmilsson is one of Harry Nilsson's finest collections of mostly original songs, and is a playful, clever, and rocking romp across several musical styles that is nearly universal in its appeal to fans of rock, pop, blues, and all points in between.

At its heart, Nilsson Schmilsson is a piano-based pop rocker, as the opening track indicates with its infectiously Beatles-esque piano riff that anchors Nilsson's acrobatic, gracefully soaring vocals. Nilsson's move toward a more rock-oriented sound comes off great--it's wonderful to hear his able pop crooning vocals spliced with something a bit edgier, yet still accessible. Add to the more aggressive sound the trappings of a 70's pop-rock album (horns, strings, etc.), and it's a perfectly natural Nilsson outing. Nilsson's adult contemporary reputation is somewhat reinforced by the first two tracks; one deals with the responsibilities of adulthood, and the second, "Driving Along" reflects a melancholy about the spaces between people. They're both rocking and catchy--in fact, listening to Nilsson Schmilsson (which is somewhat of a lost pleasure to fans of my age these days) it becomes pretty obvious that the indie pop rock sounds that are so prevalent today have a clear (and likely superior) predecessor 25+ years in the past. Go figure.

Through the rest of the album, Nilsson deftly covers a lot of stylistic ground--playful, mellow blues on "Early in the Morning," sleepy, mysterious contemplation on "The Moonbeam Song" (which could have easily fit on Nilsson's classic The Point storybook album), hard boogie on "Down," heart-wrenching balladry on the frequently-covered hit "Without You" (Nilsson's oh-so authentic vocal really flies on that one), clever and humorous pop on "Coconut" (THAT'S where that song came from), and barnstorming rock on the breathless "Jump Into The Fire." By the end, it's a wild joyride of an album that takes you a lot of places. Nilsson Schmilsson is loads of fun, boasting some of the strongest singing and writing in his career. Older listeners seem to know about this classic's merits, but for some reason Nilsson's music seems to be lost on a newer generation--mine--that, based on a lot of its music tastes, would gobble this music up. Recommended.

This reissue sounds great and is packed with plenty of extra material--6 bonus tracks, including an interesting Spanish/English version of "Without You," a couple unreleased songs, alternate versions of others, a radio advertisement, and a pretty funny joke song based on a French instruction manual. The bonus tracks definitely sweeten an already essential album, giving more reason to both newcomers and the already-converted.

4 out of 5 stars Schmilsson still rules!.......2007-05-12

This a is great CD: the music is still as fresh as it was decades ago. A grea range of tunes. Nothing beats that coconut song!

5 out of 5 stars something to have.......2007-03-14

These CD's are filled with all the awesome relaxing songs for the evening when you need it. It is just one of those must have items in your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2007-02-19

This album was a "try and see" purchase but I love it. It makes great dinner music, great music to drift off to sleep with, or just nice background filler during social events needing a softer tone. It is not all solo piano music if that s what you are after; the other instruments blend very well however and don't challenge the piano playing. It is a piano album after all!

5 out of 5 stars buy now.......2006-09-01

Want to know why I think the piano is the best musical instrument ever invented? Because no matter how the piano is played, it will always sound good. Whether the music is fast, slow, quiet or loud, it ALWAYS delivers with an appealing sound. This is something you need to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2006-02-22

This is a beautiful calming cd. The playing is excellent and the pieces are well chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Aesthetically Pleasing.......2005-09-14

I simply love piano music. If you're looking to relax, enjoy a peaceful time, then you must check out this album. If you truly enjoy piano music, this album is by far one of the best you can purchase.

As it says....it is the "Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever..." Well, I haven't listened to all piano albums in the world, but I don't need to, this one is just perfect for me, and I think you will agree!

I would say the pianists' are extremely accomplished. At times, I would admit-it's a bit 'spine tingling'!

1 out of 5 stars torture! .......2007-01-25

What the heck is this music! They just played "Jump into the fire" apparently the LONG version, it went on forever, the same 2 tones over and over!. I am working on the PC and it's going off on my head, I never heard it before. But JEEZ it's like a record stuck on broken! My brain froze up near the end of it! I had to look down and check if I had the right classic rock station on. But not before I ripped the headphones off because I though I was going to have a stroke! And this is one of his good songs? okkaayyyyyyyyy.

What total torture. its like Edgar Winter Frankenstein, which is good, only this song sorta took that song and had Edgar's brother Johnny play it on a $2 guitar. for real

4 out of 5 stars Would have been 5 stars EXCEPT...........2006-12-26

Great album if you only own one Nilsson record, except "Jump Into The Fire" is the short AM radio version. What brain surgeon at the record company decided to edit Harry's masterpiece? Otherwise, a great bit of music.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the newer "Very Best of".......2006-06-05

Hopefully this will stay in print and not be replaced by "Everybody's Talkin': The Very Best Of". For another 3 bucks (as of this writing), you get 21 songs here instead of just 14 there. (And a cooler cover photo too.)

Two songs on VBO are not here: "Turn Your Radio On" and "All I Do Is Think About You." However, the nine (9) songs here that ain't there overwhelmingly tip the scales to this set. Listening to "1941", "Cuddly Toy", and "Girlfriend", among others, you can almost picture John Lennon jotting Harry's name down on his "List of Future Drinking Buddies."

I'm glad this set includes "As Time Goes By", a minor hit from a standards album (A Touch of Schmillson in the Night) that at the time was actually an UNcommercial move. In the '00's, Nilsson's contemporaries are finding their audience only responds to cover albums while ignoring their new material.

I'm not sure why the new comp was released; RCA/BMG could have just left the older, less-remastered Greatest Hits in print at a bargain price. Anyway, this is the better choice of what's out there now. If you like this, you may want to seek out "Personal Best", a 2-CD anthology which I believe has also slipped out of print.

4 out of 5 stars I'm Just Wild About Harry !!!!.......2006-03-14

I first became aware of Harry's Music when I first heard Everybody's Talking on the Radio when it first came out !! I thought it was a new Glen Campell song but my sister told me it was Harry Nilsson and from that day I became a true fan !!!
This is a great album of some of Harry Best Songs including Cuddly Toy( later recorded by the Monkees ) & Puppy Song which these 2 songs were left off Personal Best Cd !!!! Im glad they added Girlfriend which became My Best Friend for the Courtship of Eddies Father Title Song for that Show !!! Once your Hooked on this Cd you'll be wanting to hear more of his stuff in which most of his albums have been reissued so sit back and enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awe inspiring versatility.......2006-01-24

What is genius? I would offer Harry Nilsson's Greatest Hits as a possible example...
This guy, who is unfortunately still too unknown, is clearly adept at so many styles and types of songs that going from one track to another can be surprising, just as it is satisfying.
Get this. And his individual albums too.
Two well known song's are "Everybody's Talkin'," definitive as Midnight Cowboy's anthum, "One," made famous by Three Dog Night and powerfully covered by Aimee Mann for Magnolia, and "Without You," a large and emotional love song, covered by many including Mariah Carey.
But "Me and My Arrow," "Jump Into the Fire," "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City," "1941," and "Spaceman," among others are also stellar songs.
This is a terrific album.

1 out of 5 stars The Most Relaxing Classical Album In the World Eveer, Volume II.......2006-08-28

Good selection of music, poorly performed and badly arranged. Good album for a tag sale. Same comment applies for Volume I.

5 out of 5 stars Great music listein to while you read in bed.......2005-08-21

I have listened to this CD for the last several years before going to sleep at night. I love classical music, and this is great music to help make my soul feel at peace and unwind after a taxing day.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy for the non-snobbish classical music fan........2004-10-22

I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!

5 out of 5 stars A bliss of spirit........2004-09-18

That's disc will open You a wonderful, beautiful world of sounds, their harmony & emotion : you'll feel your heart full of
Joy, Tears, Love.
Good LUCK!

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2004-05-11

Yes this CD will put you to sleep in minutes. Its the most boring uninspiring classical music. The first CD was very good but this Vol. 2 is like most movie sequels....AWFUL !

That the most famous garage-rock record of all time, the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie," is buried on the last CD of this four-disc box is very much in keeping with the spirit of the (often) one-hit wonders that people Nuggets. Here, "Louie Louie" is just another great song. An elaboration on the 1972 double LP, which is included in its original sequence, this set piles on dozens more great moments of inspiration, guts, chutzpah, and sometimes sheer commercial calculation. How else to explain the advice "Look at yourself" from the likes of the Strawberry Alarm Clock, whose idea of mind expansion seems limited to putting together two very vaguely related n
