Bernstein: Chichester Psalms; Copland: In the Beginning; Barber: Agnus Dei

Although Bernstein's ambitious, adventurous, and relentlessly exciting Chichester Psalms is the disc's marquee work, you may be even more impressed by the Corydon Singers' sublime rendition of Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei, which is the choral incarnation of his famous Adagio for Strings. Throughout the disc, you'll hear nothing but excellent singing--and some of the 20th century's finest choral music. --David Vernier

1 out of 5 stars Data Amazon.com Gives on Multi-piece CDs.......2001-08-28

I found the contents of There is Sweet Music with difficulty. I wanted to know whether it contained three specific pieces, found one in your description, had to enlarge the CD jacket picture to find another, and had to consult an outside source to find the third. For such CDs, Amazon should list the entire CD's contents. Note: I gave this but one star because I had to rate it to submit this complaint. After I get and hear the CD, I'm likely to rate it better.

5 out of 5 stars In The Beginning.......2000-12-11

Having sung In the Beginning with my choir, I was desperate to get a good recording of this piece. The one on this CD is fantastic- it really brings out the feelings of the piece. The Barber Agnus Dei is also very moving- this cd constantly lives in my stereo!

3 out of 5 stars Correct, but lacks sparkle........2000-05-28

After listening this disc we can say "It's ok". Every song is sung in a exact pitch and clear beat in every part, and is conducted in a correct tempo, but alas, it lacks sparkle. And this is crucial! Just listene to the "Agnus Dei" of Barber here, It is so rigid and constrained, even sound a bit wooden. It happens in Bernstein's Chichester Psalms too. This is a good disk for students major in conducting. He can learn from here how to make every part of a chorus sound clear. But never try to learn any interpretation about music here.
