The Skeleton Key - sounds of the old South.......2007-04-11
Dark, stormy listening to take you to the marshlands of New Orleans - at times, clearly a soundtrack, but with tracks from the likes of Robert Johnson and the hoodoo beats of Iko Iko, you'll suddenly feel an inkling for Gumbo like a true bayou-dwelling Creole.
contains every compositional piece from the movie.......2006-08-04
This CD contains what I thought was every compositional piece from the movie. I was hoping the CD in general would be a little more up-beat and personally I found it a little bit boring to listen to. Listen carefully to the music of the movie becuase that is exactly what you get.
good soundtrack.......2006-01-13
If you are fan of the blues, or you simply enjoy eerie instrumental tunes, this soundtrack is for you.
It is very rare for me to find a soundtrack that contains all the songs i liked from a movie. This is the case! It even has Papa Justify's conjuration of sacrifice, those drums really take you to New Orleans Hoodoo streets. A great complement for the fans of the movie .
Review from Equalmusic.com.......2005-10-28
If you are jonesing for the way New Orleans' used to be or are kicking yourself hard because you never made the pilgrimage down before the recent tragedy, then the soundtrack to The Skeleton Key is your best bet. Like the movie, the soundtrack transports the audience into the bayou culture with such ease that at times it's almost hard to believe that you're not in fact below the Mason-Dixon Line. Released on Varese Records, it is the perfect accompaniment to the film.
Composer Edward Shearmur and the Hollywood Studio Symphony bring the flick to life with their bone chilling orchestrations that can creep you out even in the light of day. Those who dig the horror aspect of the film will be pleased with the inclusion of "Conjure of Sacrifice," a spoken track key to the movie's plot. However, the real reason to buy this release is not for its freaky facets but for its spotlight on a few of the most influential blues artists of the twentieth century.
For anyone beginning to cultivate an interest in blues, this is a great foray into the genre and its heavy hitters. First off is Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen." Johnson, who many have dubbed the father of modern rock and roll, delivers his legendary take on Delta Blues with perfection. Mississippi Fred McDowell, master of the slide guitar, whether it be bottleneck or the apocryphal steak bone, lends his "61 Highway Blues" with a kind of raw integrity.
My vote however, goes to celebrated gospel musician, Blind Willie Johnson. His "God Moves On The Water" with its crackly sound quality, delivers a sucker punch to the soul. Johnny Farmer's "Death Letter" is easily the best track the recording has to offer. Farmer, the only bluesman on the disc still alive and kicking it, loans an infectious ditty that seeps into the skin and refuses to be washed away. Haunting and beat driven, the song is given a modern remix by southern rapper, Organized Noize. The marriage of Delta and hip-hop here is flawless.
Of course there are a few missteps and oddities. Blackbud's "Barefoot Dancing" is a jarring departure from the easy bayou theme. The song is ill suited to both movie and soundtrack, a definite skipper. As is Joe Washburn's "The Goldrush," which despite its melodic back music has a whiny quality that's hard to overlook. "Do Watcha Wanna" by Rebirth Brass Band is an interesting addition. It is a lively big band song that puts one in the mood for Mardi Gras. A rare gem is The Dixie Cups' version of the old Indian Mardi Gras chant "Iko Iko." Although given sinister connotations in the film, it is a fun and upbeat addition to the disc.
Seeped in New Orleans' jazz and Cajun music, the CD captures the music of The Big Easy and its surrounding parishes with forthright conviction. With the latest disaster still a fresh wound, the soundtrack as well as the film is jarring in ways that have nothing to do with the practice of voodoo. However, it is its ability to elegantly capture the culture and feel of the place that make both worth looking into. If only for a little while New Orleans's is returned to its former splendor through the music it has become known for. I suggest seeing the movie first then checking out this superb auxiliary.
Spooky good fun!.......2005-09-01
I bought this soundtrack mostly for the song that played during the opening and end credits, "Death Letter" by Johnny Farmer (with some fun added drum beats and enhancement by Organized Noize). The song (as well as the rest of the soundtrack) was mixed by Chris Fogel. The rest of the soundtrack is a mix of old bayou songs and Edward Shearmur's shamelessly delicious score. It's spooky with a taste of the old South. It's a lot of fun and one of the most entertaining soundtracks I have heard in a while.

With just his piano, his tunes, and several duet partners on Dancing on the Water, Bob James's deftness with a hook is unmistakable. His smooth-jazz group Fourplay could easily buff up "Hum Drum" and "Bogie's Boogie" into bona fide hits. On the duets with pianists Joe Sample and Keiko Matsui, James submerges his style to go inside the musical worlds of his partners. He probably wrote "Altair & Vega" and "Duo Oto Subito" for the Japanese dynamo, as it is sometimes difficult to tell on these Asian-flavored tunes where Matsui ends and James begins. Even if Sample and James weren't set on each side of the mix, it's easy to tell who's who, because Sample's rhythmic playing and solo style are unique and dominating. James does his best soloing on the duets with bassist supreme Dave Holland, including a great reading of "Last Night When We Were Young." They're perfectly in sync on the gorgeous James original "Autumn Nocturne." Guitarist Chuck Loeb plays on the title track, and it's the only tune that's solidly identifiable as James, because it's a reminder of the pianist's gold-selling duets with Earl Klugh. As this set proves, Bob James isn't Keith Jarrett, but thankfully, he isn't George Winston either. --Mark Ruffin
Customer Reviews:
Need a vacation from smooth jazz? Try DANCING ON THE WATER!.......2002-10-13
Bob James takes us on an unexpected musical journey with this CD. He displays his acoustic side masterfully. "Alone Together" finds him teamed with the great Joe Sample. On "The Green Hour", Bob reminisces about his early days playing in nightclubs. "Bogie's Boogie" is a jumpy little number written for the James' family cat. "Altair And Vega" is Bob and Keiko Matsui's musical telling of a Japanese myth. "Hum Drum" is anything BUT that. The right hand provides the melody (hum), while the left provides the rhythm (drum). Bassist Dave Holland is featured on their version of "Last Night When We Were Young", which has some beautiful lyrics. The title song, one of Bob's best, is a duet with Chuck Loeb. "Modesty" is Bob's musical wording of the modicum "less is more". Sample appears again on "Tapawingo", named after an outdoor restaraunt where Bob held his first art exhibition. "Autumn Noctourne" is a beautiful duet between Bob and Holland. "Duo Oto Subito" (which translates as 'two play right away') is a melodramatic duet between Bob and Matsui. I must counter some of the comments made in other reviews. This CD is for the die-hard Bob James fan like myself, who realizes that there is more to Bob James than "smooth jazz".
Fresh, new, and awe-inspiring masterpiece.......2002-08-14
It’s really sad when legendary artists such as Bob James get negative reviews for trying to do something a little different from his past works. “Dancing on the Water” is a fresh, brilliant, and solid album. True, this work may initially sound a little bare due to the lack of percussions and electronic sounds, but it is with this simplicity in arrangement that really brings out the tunes’ haunting charm. Strewn throughout this album are upbeat and playful tunes such as “Alone Together” and “Altair & Vega”, as well as quiet, reflective melodies such as “The Green Hour” and “Modesty”. Overall, Bob James has created an inspiring, provocative masterpiece that showcases stripped down contemporary piano music at its very best.
Not jazzy at all, but it might grow on me--I'll listen more.......2002-02-03
If you are thinking about getting this because you heard something by this artist you like, try one of his masterpieces like Grand Piano Canyon. This album sounds boring to me. But I'll listen to it a few more times. I own about a dozen of his works. They are very diverse, and some of them I didn't think much of at first have grown on me. Bob James is one of my favorites.
Dancing on the Water, Drowned.......2002-01-16
I anticipted a consistent work throughout the CD but found myself wondering if this was truly Bob James or an impersonator. The music was contrived and stilted. It did not flow as I had expected. ven Joe Sample didn't save the music.
Original and outstanding.......2002-01-07
I can understand why some Bob James fans, who have bought this album without listening to it first, may be disappointed. It is nothing like Bob James has done before.
However, I think he truly delivered a masterpiece here. Brilliant compositions performed by great artists. My personal favorites are "Altair & Vega" and "Dancing on the Water".
I am happily surprised that every Bob James album gets even better and better.

tiny jewels.......2001-07-20
Another great offering from Cold Blue Records. This collection of short pieces for clarinet and assorted instruments is the newest offering from Marty Walker, renowned champion of new music and collaborator on many of Cold Blue's recordings. Especially welcome here is a new recording of Daniel Lentz's "Song(s) of the Sirens," an exquisite older work whose premiere recording has been out-of-print for some time. While the pieces presented are well-crafted and certainly well-played, some seem a bit brief or slight on material. Still, a worthwile addition to the collection of any listener tired of standard contemporary fare.

Amasong's Most Recent Release.......2006-11-10
Perhaps it's because I listened to Amai so much, I can't get as into this CD. The CD opens with a rousing Brazilian song. The energy of it reminds me strongly of the last track on Amai. The tracks after this one aren't quite as rousing and I feel that the song would have been better placed at the end of the album.
Other than that, the CD is better produced than the other two and you can hear it.
Choral music with soul.......2003-10-10
Beautiful music sung by an award winning vocal group of lesbian/feminist women from Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Everything about this cd is top notch - from the ceramic art works and book design to the quality and diversity of music. It's simply gorgeous.

Best klezmer CD I have heard in 20 years.......2000-04-12
This CD is a real star. There are many original pieces or variations on traditional pieces, that grab you immediately, and entertain you throughout the song. At times it sounds like Finjan is traditional village band thrown into the 21st century. The quality of the recording and excellence in musicianship are apparent from the first note. I would highly recommend this albumn for your own listening pleasure or as gift for both lovers of Klezmer and World music or newcomers to this genre. This is by far one of the best Klezmer albumns I have heard in a long long time and I wouldn't be surprised if it was nominated for a Grammy. A real diamond in the rough.

Early Forays into Chamber Compositions.......2006-01-12
Olli Mustonen is a name the public knows best from his performance at the piano, as soloist, in chamber ensembles and in concerti. Yet here is another very fine aspect of this artist's creativity. These works include a Triple Concerto for violins and chamber orchestra, 2 Nonets for strings, and two works for cello and piano and cello and small orchestra. They are young works, filled with enthusiasm, quotations from Baroque through Contemporary, and while obviously demanding on the artists, are very accessible to the novice listener.
Mustonen conducts the works with the Tapiola Sinfonietta and has engaged some very fine soloists: violinists Elisabeth Batiashvili (admittedly my intial reason for obtaining this CD!), Pekka Kuusisto and Jaakko Kuusisto, cellist Martti Rousi, and Ilari Angervo and Marko Ylonen. The small works without orchestra introduce some excellent playing, both in technique and in unity of sound. This is a fine introduction to the compositions of Olli Mustonen and suggests we will be hearing more from his pen as well as his piano! Grady Harp, January 06
This is Just Fabulous.......2002-04-13
I knew Olli Mustonen's gift as a pianist, but he matches with his skills as a composer. The Triple Concerto has a structure of a Baroque concerto providing a lot of runs and excitement. The Petite Suite and Nonets were also beautiful pieces.

A Fritz Kreisler recording can always be recognized by the violinist's beefy, baritonal sonority, inimitable portamento, and communicative warmth. Most of the repertoire here consists of the short, encore pieces that prevailed in the era of 78rpm records, many penned or arranged by Kreisler, who was always on the lookout for memorable tunes. Familiar classics like the duets with John McCormack, and Schubert, Beethoven, and Grieg sonata collaborations with Rachmaninoff turn up alongside rare alternate takes and Kreisler's lone recording as a piano soloist in Dvořak's Humoresque. One should savor these musical sweetmeats in small portions, rather than wolfing down each disc in chronological gulps. Ward Marston's transfers are beyond praise. -- Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Kind of Amazing.......2005-12-08
First thing I be wondering is where RCA (BMG--now probably Wal-Mart) got the idea that a $120 set of Kreisler faves--most short 78-era items--would be marketable? I'd love to check the Homeland Security records and see just who bought this set. I would never have sprung for it but now that I was given one I have to comment on it. Amazing!
First, there's the playing. This is a professionally ebullient fiddler. Technically astounding, but with the communicative warmth the other reviewers seem to uniformly note. I find violin tiring to the ear sometimes, but not this guy's violin. A joy to listen to.
Second, the selection. Fairly much 11 discs of solid "pop" music--a kind of Fiedlerian dream world where every piece catches the attention usually because of potent melodic pungency. I found myself looking forward to each cut, knowing I would be well-rewarded. Kreisler chose his repertoire well.
Third, oh yeah sure, nostalgia. Everything here is an echo of a world that passed largely by 1914 and was already deep nostalgia for many by the time these last recordings were made in the 1940s. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with that, it's a kind of longing not for an idealized past but for aspects of that past that are clearly missing in the world today (or even back in 1948 when the last tracks were set down). Heck, I listen to Beethoven and find myself getting nostalgic for an era when my local department store music department would make a big deal out of a new Bernstein release and a major network would actually give Lennie time to talk about classical music to the masses.
Anyway, I never intended to own the collection, now I do and I'd replace it in the blink of an eye. Charming and entertaining from disc one to disc eleven.
Almost painfully beautiful music/playing.......2005-05-08
It is one of the real advatages of modern life that we can still hear and be moved by artists from the early 20th century. As listners, there are probably psychological factors that predispose us to be touched by the original rather than someone imitating a style from the past. Part of the psychological impact for me is the nostalgia element and connections this music has to memories of my ancestors who where alive when this music was being played and recorded. But beyond the listener's psychological factor(s) the artists from the early 20th century had a completely different set of musical and non-musical experiences from our contempory artists. A contemporary artist trying to duplicate the style from another era often sounds false and affected. Regardless, ultimately performances have to stand on their own musical merit. These most definately do.
Absolutely Ravishing!.......2001-03-24
Ever since he first toured The U.S as a child in 1888 with pianist Moritz Rosenthal Fritz Kreisler's musical talents have left us spellbound. His playing combines a searching intelligence with intense and delightful musicality, his mellow honey-like tone appeals to the heartstrings, and awakens enthusiasm in his listeners. He was a great violinist who at the same time could touch and charm his audience. I highly reccomend this set to all lovers of the violin!

Absolutely Incredible!.......1999-12-10
I would give this set a 10 stars, if I were allowed to. Kreisler has been my favorite violinist as far as I can remember, and have never gotten tired of his playing (and never will be either!) His playing has deceptive ease and elegance that makes people forget how phenominal his technique was(just listen to his crystalline trills and amazing articulation of fast runs). And even at his sweetest moments, his performance always had strong backbone and never sank into tasteless sentimentality. Kreisler's playing was really one of the kind and anyone who loves violin should listen to his recordings. I cannot recommend this set highly enough! The CD transfer is excellent.
