Album Description
"I suffer no compromises in music. I caused a good deal of mischief in my life - but in my music, I was always honest, always upright." - Karl Böhm in July 1981, a few weeks before his death.

One of the hallmarks of Böhm's conducting was its perennially youthful vigor and directness, its lack of pathos and sentimentality. Dramatic climaxes and full sonorities grew out of almost imperceptible accents, out of the natural rhythm of the human breath. In short… he was the ideal conductor for Mozart! Böhm's Mozart interpretations reflect the naturalness and clarity of his conducting. Although Wagner was one of his first loves, Böhm soon discovered Mozart's operas thanks to Bruno Walter, who let him conduct Die Entführung aus dem Serail in Munich in the early 1920s. Later, Böhm's friendship with Richard Strauss led to a still deeper knowledge and appreciation of Mozart. In his autobiography, Böhm wrote that "Richard Strauss revealed to me the ultimate secrets of this - in my opinion - greatest of all musical geniuses [Mozart]." Böhm's discovery of these secrets transformed his Mozart interpretations into unforgettable events.

5 out of 5 stars I can't say enough good about this release.......2005-10-23

I can't say enough good about this release! DG/Universal have released some great mono recordings from the 1950s + some later Stereo issues of Karl Bohm (1894-1981) with the Vienna Philharmonic, Dresden State Orchestra, and Berlin Philharmonic, some which have never been on CD, or have been out of the catalog for years.

The Richard Strauss discs: about 50% of this set, have been released recently in a 3 CD Strauss box of Bohm/Dresden State Orchestra, and Berlin Philharmonic (DG, budget priced), but discs 1-4: Mozart and Weber, have not.

The Mozart "Requiem" with the Vienna Symphony, is from 1956 and is superb: taut, muscular, dramatic, and in very fine mono sound. Tempos are faster and more exciting than in Bohm's 1970 remake with the Vienna Philharmonic (DG). The 1956 "Requiem" was originally released on Philips LP, and for a short time, on Philips CD. The accompanying Symphonies 26 and 32 are very well played, with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

The Mozart Symphonies are all excellent: 34 (with the added Minuet movement many conductors leave out), 35 and 38, all with the Vienna Philharmonic, originally Decca recordings, in mid 1950s mono sound. They share the same high marks and good qualities I give to Bohm's DG stereo Berlin Philharmonic Mozart cycle from the 1960s. The playing is warm and affectionate, tempos never too fast or slow: everything is just right. Karl Bohm was one excellent Mozart conductor, and the same can be said for Symphonies 39, 40, and 41 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

While the Berlin Philharmonic "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" might not sound as good as Bohm's 1976 Vienna Philharmonic recording (DG, in several different reissues), it is very good, and affectionate. And I enjoyed the four Weber Overtures, including the rarely heard "Abu Hassan", "Euryanthe" and "Oberon" immensely - recorded in 1951 with the Dresden State Orchestra (Bohm's own orchestra from 1934-43) in very good mono sound.

Nothing need be said in detail about the Strauss works. You may know Bohm and Richard Strauss (1864-1949) became close friends in the early 1930s, and Strauss thought very highly of his younger colleague. Strauss's 1944 opera "Daphne" is dedicated to Karl Bohm. Bohm recorded much of Strauss's music: both orchestral (here) and opera, for DG, Decca, and other labels later on in his career.

Disc 8 is narration by Bohm, in German, recorded in 1960, "A Life re-told" and it is very interesting. There is a rough English translation in the accompanying text booklet, of Bohm's words telling about his life up to 1960 and career as a conductor. I highly recommend this set to anyone interested in great conducting, or in Karl Bohm's recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A BOHM BOMB.......2007-06-21

I used to say if you want to hear a piece of music on "original instruments" buy a cheap phonograph. With CD technology I can't say that any more. Now I say buy a CD made with original equipment, preferably from the '20s or '30s. This CD proves my point.
I should have read the fine print. "Recordings : 1938 - 1939". Interesting to hear Brahms played on what appear to be penny whistles. Not only was the equipment primitive back then, so were the musicians. Save yourself the price of this one and any attendent frustrations. The engineers who struggled to remaster it deserve better.
I threw my copy away and kept the plastic case. Not a total loss.

5 out of 5 stars Very good sound for the late 1930s.......2007-04-19

Karl Bohm (1894-1981) conducted and recorded with the Dresden State Orchestra from 1934-1943. It was his last job as music director of an orchestra before his international career after World War II and many recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic in the 1960s and 70s made him the justly famous conductor he became and still is today (April, 2007), 26 years after his death.

Recorded sound is clear and balanced, and better than most Furtwangler recordings of the 1930s and 40s.

Bohm recorded Brahms 4 with the Vienna Philharmonic for DG in 1975, and the Reger Mozart Variations with the Berlin Philharmonic for DG in the early 1950s (also mono). Bohm's later Brahms 4 can be had in a DG budget box of all 4 Brahms Symphonies, and Reger Mozart Variations is discmate to a DG single of Brahms 2 in the "Musik an die Welt" series. Both are highly recommended.

Don't be afraid to pick up this disc unless you MUST have more recent sound.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this for the Mozart Symphony 40.......2005-11-02

Karl Bohm (1894-1981) was one of the best Mozart conductors of the 2nd half of the 1900s, along with Sir Thomas Beecham (1879-1961), Bruno Walter (1876-1962), Otto Klemperer (1885-1973) and George Szell (1897-1970). Bohm's recordings of the complete Mozart Symphonies, available from Amazon.com, with the Berlin Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon, is one of the great recordings of the 1960s. Bohm later recorded Mozart's Symphony 40 in G minor with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1977 (also Deutsche Grammophon), and he performed this symphony often in concert. Here is Bohm's 1974 recording of Symphony 40 with the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra, and it is very good. The allegros move and crackle with needed tension, yet are not overly fast. There is a nice heft to the sound, which really makes listening to this a treat.

The Beethoven Piano Concerto 4, with a pianist I have no familiarity with at all, is less successful. It is in MONO sound which is acceptable, but not as good as the Mozart Symphony. This is a good, but not great performance/recording dating from 1951, and Bohm/Pollini from the late 1970s (DG Beethoven Edition) is to be preferred in this concerto if you want Bohm as conductor.

The last 2 tracks, rehearsal of Mozart's Symphony 40, just prior to the taping of the recording by Bohm/Stuttgart Radio Orchestra, in German, is very good. I don't understand German well, but I get the gist of what Bohm wants; the orchestra players like him, and there are some laughs and humor mixed in with an efficient rehearsal. If you can understand German, you'll get more out of the rehearsal than I did.

Askenase's recordings are almost all Chopin, so this superbly played Mozart from 1951 is a wonderful discovery. Backhaus made an excellent recording of the Schumann Concertos, but this live performance from 1963 is still worth hearing for its spontaneous poetry near the end of his great career. The Ney Beethoven (1956) is turgid and the recorded quality is thick and dull. The Brahms Concertos has its moments but overall doesn't flow the way it should. This odd memorial to the conductor--who is the least interesting element of the recordings--is about half wonderful, half indifferent. --Leslie Gerber
