Listening to just the first minute of Stephen Scott's "Rainbows, I" (the album's first track) will shatter your notion of what piano music should sound like. With a heavy nod to the minimalism of Steve Reich, Scott and his group of students from Colorado College created one of the most memorable and original compositions of bowed piano strings ever recorded. Here, the white and black keys are overshadowed by a handful of musicians crawling over the open-topped instrument, armed with Popsicle sticks glued with horsehair (the perfect bow for reaching into a grand's tight corners). The drones created by the ensemble's bowing sound anything but acoustic, but there's some gorgeous music here, with subtle melodies surfacing above the repetitious fold. Scott's compositions sound both inventive and simple--ominous on "Music One for Bowed Strings," but absolutely pulsating on "Rainbows, II." Good vibrations, indeed. --Jason Verlinde

Scott's pieces betray a Steve Reich influence; the harmonies are rich, relatively consonant, and unexpected....

Album Description
I first became aware that one could bow the strings of a piano in 1976, when I heard David Burge play a composition by Curtis Curtis-Smith. This was a solo piano work, played mostly on the keyboard but utilizing also some prepared piano techniques. One striking effect was produced by drawing nylon fish line across the strings. I was captivated by the sound and began immediately (before David's performance was over as I recall) to imagine the sound of several players bowing a piano's strings simultaneously, thus producing sustained chords. Thus was born the first composition for ensemble-bowed piano, Music One for Bowed Strings, which I completed in 1977 and performed that year with the Colorado College New Music Ensemble. It should be stressed that all of the sounds heard in the ensemble pieces are produced by the piano strings; no electronics or other sound producing devices are involved. The recordings are made "live" exactly as they are performed in concert.

5 out of 5 stars Not a gimmick..........2005-05-06

The music stands on its own, apart from how it is produced (by several musicians plucking, tapping, and bowing the strings and other parts of the piano), and apart from the loose "theme" of oceanic exploration. The piece is not strictly produced to evoke images of what each segment is titled, as explained clearly by Stephen Scott in the accompanying notes. You need not have any concern that the bowed piano is a "gimmick" to crank out any old aounds! The music is quite "accessible," that is, fairly tuneful, with a repetitive nature found in much modern music such as Philip Glass. The segments are cohesive in the manner of a symphony, or as if Scott is telling a story, which he is (hey, I'm writing as a jazz and classical fan, not as a musicologist). All this translates to: highly recommended. Five stars. I'm not kidding!

5 out of 5 stars New Music About The Old Age.......2001-06-30

I had a fortunate experience with this music. When the CD was originally released, I first heard a long portion of it on the radio, not knowing what the instrument was or how it was played. I was instantly fascinated! I was living in Hawaii at the time, and the odd thing was that I knew right away what the music was about. The slow, almost hypnotic motion of the ocean struck me in a visceral kind of way. And, near the end, as the sounds of birds are discovered! I swear, I could *smell* land at that point! When I bought the CD, I was more than impressed. The Bowed Piano Ensemble have essentially redefined the use of the piano...which is to say, it's not just a percussion instrument anymore (a hammer striking a string), but can be used in a variety of interesting ways. I'm reminded of the time I saw the Steve Reich Ensemble on tour when "Sextet" was first recorded. The use of a bow on the end of a metal xylophone key was something I'd never seen or heard before. I'm sure someone could probably point to earlier examples of these things (though it would be interesting if no one could). Whatever. The result here is a remarkable piece of music. HIGHLY recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Truly remarkable.......2000-10-30

Stephen Scott and his Bowed Piano Ensemble performed part of this piece here at Brown University very recently, and I was totally blown away both by the music and of course by the unique methods the Ensemble is so expert in. It was an amazing visual and aural experience to see and hear this piece being played, watching the players crowded around the piano, their arms moving rhythmically creating a web of undulating filaments. It looked like a giant loom of some kind on which each performer was weaving the incredibly colorful and expressive music that filled the hall. People who are skeptical about contemporary or avant-garde music will find this music to be surprisingly accessible, fascinating, and yes, even enjoyable.

    Album Description

Founded in 1971 by video artists Woody and Steina Vasulka, The Kitchen is internationally known as a leading center for video, music, dance, performance, new media and literature. The first institution to focus exclusively on cutting-edge, multidisciplinary works, it has been a powerful force in shaping the cultural landscape of this country. Over the last thirty years The Kitchen has documented every one of its performances with video and/or audiotape. However, in recent years much of this documentation, primarily recorded on what are now obsolete formats, began deteriorating. In 1999, under the leadership of Executive Director Elise Bernhardt, and with the dedication of The Kitchen9s Board of Directors and the help of numerous donors, The Kitchen began an initiative to catalog and re-master its extensive collection of 3600 videotapes. In the fall of 2001, an additional trove of audio recordings from the 1970s was discovered. While these tapes promised rare and exciting music by such artists as John Cage, Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, and David Tudor (in the first box alone!), none of this material could be accessed without proper cleaning and re-formatting and the funds and facilities to do so. A recent collaborative partnership with The Looking Glass Studios and Philip Glass9 label, Orange Mountain Music, has allowed for the restoration of a number of audio reels. This work has been done with the goal of producing a series of CDs, From The Kitchen Archives, with New Music, New York 1979 as the first release. This 2-disc set offers re-mastered recordings from the landmark New Music, New York: A Festival of Composers and their Music, held at the Kitchen9s 484 Broome Street space in SoHo from June 8-16, 1979. The festival, which set a standard for new and contemporary music, paved the way for New Music America, the annual event that emerged the following year in Minneapolis and ran in various cities until 1990. Now 25 years later, these recordings are an invaluable time-capsule, a privileged view/listen into a historic event, initially heard by only a few hundred people. Beyond their historic value they offer brilliant and exciting music by composers now considered masters of the genre, as well as remarkable performances by figures nearly forgotten. While many recordings from the festival could be restored, several gaps remain: concerts that were either not recorded or whose tapes vanished into the ether of the last 25 years. That said, we feel extremely fortunate to be able to release New Music, New York 1979 as our first CD in a series that promises to make available more lost treasures from The Kitchen Archives, uncovering the origins of new music today.

This is a superb compilation ~ Evenly fitted together for a most sublime effect ~ I would advise letting the music do it's magic rather than expecting something else. This is most gratifying and any Cage, Feldman, Ligeti, Adams, Wuorinen, Glass or Reich fan will love this. Exceptional!!

2 out of 5 stars Anthology Falls Flat.......2001-01-18

This is not an anthology which I find myself able to recommend. John Adams is the most significant composer represented here; yet the work included by him is merely an excerpt. The complete work can be found elsewhere, paired with "Shaker Loops."

The works by Satoh, Dresher, and Scott are interesting enough, while the I find the works by Marshall and Lentz quite inaccessible.
