Whether or not you are a fan of classical music, the truth is that everyone enjoys a few hours of peace and relaxation. This CD provides a wide selection of music from famous composers like Mozart to lesser known classical composers, which makes it the perfect CD to play on your stereo during those rare moments of peace. Play it while reading a favorite novel, or just simply sit down and meditate with the help of this classical CD. Beethoven's widely popular "Moonlight Sonata" for the piano and Chopin's extraordinary "Raindrop" are just two examples of musical pieces that will not only calm but enrich your life. With a total of three discs included at a phenomenal value, this is one CD that you cannot afford to pass up.

In 1982, DG released a series of boxed sets commemorating the 100 years of the Berlin Philharmonic. I have the 6 lp boxed set featuring eminent guest conductors. Friscay is one of the conductors on these lps as well as Maazel, Bohm, Abbado, Jochum, Kubelik, & Rostropovich. As you can see by this list, the BPO has had to be content with some rather obscure and second rate stand ins! (just joking for those without a sense of humor). So, if you are wondering where to rank Friscay consider the notables he is included with.

DG selected this performance of Dvorak's 9th & Die Moldau for the boxed set. This has got to be one of the all time great WOW!!! Dvorak 9th performances that have ever been recorded. I have the Kertesz Dvorak 9th on lp that has served well as a benchmark and Friscay more than gives Kertesz a run for the money. Between listening to this symphony and Tchaikovsky's 4th & 5th, I ingested my RDA of brass today!

Rhapsody has some, but not a truck load, of Friscay recordings. The primary ones I put together at Rhapsody are Mendelssohn's Midsummer's Night Dream, and Tchaikovsky Symphonies 4,5,6 symphonies. Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto is included with symphony 5 and features a tremendous performance by Yehudi Menuhin. The Swan Lake Orchestral Suite is included with symphony 4. Friscay was also the conductor on many of Clara Haskil's Mozart concerto recordings. What a bummer that he died at 48 in 1963.

We also loose out because not too many of his recordings date from the late 1950s when analog had reached new lofty peaks in hi fi stereo recording. This Dvorak performance is from 1959 and is almost on par with digital. If you have the opportunity, listen to his Tchaikovsky 5th that dates from circa 1950 and compare the recording quality to his 1959 Dvorak 9th. I enjoyed the 5th very much, but had a somewhat sour analog after taste because of the sound. For that era, the sound is very, very good. His Tchaikovsky 4th recording quality wise sounds almost as good as the Dvorak 9th.

5 out of 5 stars A free, spontaneous Dvorak Ninth--and very exciting fillers.......2006-09-27

I came late to the party with this recording, which I hadn't run across until today. But now that I have, bravo! Fricsay is wildly spontaneous in thie Dvorak Ninth form 1962, aided by very close up and detailed miking of the orchestra. His free tempos in every movement take unexpected turns, and every phrase is shaped with freshness and vibrancy. The sonics are fine in DG's remastering, although there's a hint of shatter and crunch in the loudest climaxes. It's a cliche to say that Hungarian conductors are fiery, but Fricsay certainly fits that description here, and the Berlin Phil. follow his lead with total commitment. All in all, a must-listen.

The second longest work here is Liszt's Les Preludes, performed with Fricsay's own orchestra, the Berlin Radio Sym. When he began recording with them just after the war, they were a bedraggled bunch, but Fricsay raised their standards year by year. They play ardently for him, although the strings aren't first rate, and his interpretation, which is gently lyrical and well shaped in the big tune, generates excitement without turning into a tub-thumper. I'd call it a totally winning performance.

The remainder of this generous Cd (70+ min.) is given over to The Moldau, again with the Berlin Phil. Fricsay conducts a swift reading--it starts out as a scramble--but gives the music such a buoyant lift that it's irresistible.

5 out of 5 stars Anthological performances!.......2005-11-17

It is very difficult to maintain the serene objectivity and required tact when we are talking about Ferenc Fricsay. Specially when we have to mention one of the most reminded and well known Symphonic works that for so many years has engaged and captivated the great audiences all over the whole world.

I have listened this recording at least sixty times (one more before making this review). What Fricsay achieved with the hundred musicians of the Berlin was simply incredible. The performance is filled of undeniable vitality, sweeping energy, stylized phrasing and mercurial passion. Such evidence of fervor and emotive conviction to be true, I have never listened in any other recording recorded previously and pitifully recently. Such Dionysian rapture you will never find in any other performance, and believe me I have intended with Toscanini, Kertsez, Munch, Keilberth, Kubelik-Berlin( my Fifth choice), Kubelik-Chicago, Giulini-Chicago, Reiner, Bernstein, Ormandy, Fiedler, Stokowski, Horenstein, Muti, Mr. K, Klemperer , Dorati and Paray. Vaclav Smetacek (my second choice) , Vaclav Talich (Third choice) and Vaclav Neuman (Fourth choice) are exuberant and definitively inspired but are so far respect this one, that you may consider I am exaggerating.

Additionally we have two minor works in what artistic ambition concerns: Die Moldau is played with such charge of passion, interpretative fierceness and delicate lyricism as you never listened previously.

The Preludes have a serious rival: Fiedler-Boston Pops, but it is ambitious and notably expansive.

In synthesis, if you consider these three gems included in just one CD, well you are rewarded twice. The sound is superb.

Please, go for it. It will never let you down. An authentic musical treasure and a fabulous legacy for the new generations to come.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recording, but sound is a concern.......2004-09-25

This has to be considered one of the best 9ths out there, no question. But the sound will be a problem for some, and so that caveat should be offered. But for those who can get around such things--and I am always amazed at the number of listeners who cannot--true riches like in wait. By the way, one of the reviewers below said that Steven Ritter of the American Record Guide dissed this recording in the Third World "Listener's Companion to Classical Music". This is not true. Mr. Ritter wrote on Dvorak's choral music in that excellent guide. It was Mr. David Moore who did not like this recording.

This recording of Dvorak's 9th is a very gripping account and must be included among the best performances of this symphony yet put on disk. Although I have listened to this music countless times, everytime I listend to this disk it was as though I was listening to it for the first time. I had always thought that this symphony was just a simple, enjoyable, popular classic that everyone seemed to know about until I heard Fricsay's recording. Fricsay's recording changed my view about this music. There is so much to discover in this already overly-played and overly-recorded symphony! Fricsay did not simply play the music note by note, he brought out the drama in this music. His rendition made me rethink about this piece and love this piece more than ever! Listen to the beginning of the 2nd movement, the meltingly lyrical woodwind; and notice how the orchestra enters the finale ... a swift tempo suddenly slowing down, giving way to the Big Tune by the brass at full force, and contrasts between dynamics, etc. ... music so powerful like bursting flames, yet at times so gentle like flowing water ... it was all expertly handled! One could imagine just how much attention was given to these small details, and because of his effort on details the emotions, the power, the drama, and the magic, were all fully explored and revealed before our ears! This is a true master conductor at work!

I expected to listen to great professional classical orchestra ...for this classical music collection, but the quality of the music is not too good.

There are a lot of great music collections, but they will sound better when they record it right.

It is good when you just want to have more classical music, but for a CD, the sound quality is like a [poorley made] CD.

I give 3 stars for this product.

The Top 100 Classical Music series is a must have for novices of classical music, or someone already into the classics but wishes to amassa an "essentials" collection. This particular cd's span the Romantic Era, and although the 19th century saw much more music than what is covered on these recordings, this is nevertheless a brilliant and essential body of works. The Wedding March of Mendelsshon's Midsummer Night's Dream (played in weddings all over the world I'm assuming), Franz Lizst Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (The Looney Tunes Theme Music by the way) and other jewels of the era, such as the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss, the operetta overtures of Franz Von Suppe, Verdi's preludes to such operas as Nabucco and La Traviata, Wagner's intense, dramatic music for his Ring of the Nibelung operas, regarded as the epitome and the zenith of Romantic Era opera, and the music of other composers such as Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Sibelius, Rimsky Korsakov and many others. I highly recommend this cd to anyone wanting to sample and taste what Romantic Era music was all about. Five stars all the way.

The collection is well designed for introducing the listener to a large variety of music, with its broad range of composers and types of music. However, the interpretation of the music is hardly existant, and many of the pieces sound rather dull and uninteresting. Some lively pieces are played too slowly, and nearly all of them without emotion, keeping the set out of reach from being included in a true classical collection. Despite all that, the sheer number and range of pieces (along with the low price) make this a collection well suited for the new classical listener.

This 2CD set from Naxos at super-budget price is a wonderful way for teens or adults to acquaint themselves with the Romantic Era of classical music. It contains complete movements from works ranging from Beethoven (the 'Eroica' Symphony that started the Romantic era) to Elgar (the Nimrod variation from the 'Enigma Variations'). And pegged to those selections is an extensive and clearly-written 100-page essay by David McCleery that gives all kinds of background information as well as blow-by-blow descriptions of the pieces being played [e.g., in Schubert's song, 'Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel', "when she imagines kissing him the piano stops its repetitive spinning motif, indicating that she is so overcome by the thought that she has stopped working."]. Accompanying the text are pictures of the composers as well a quotation from most of them, from the sober [Mahler: 'To write a symphony is, for me, to construct the world.'] to the humorous [Grieg: 'I am sure my music has the taste of codfish in it.']. Also, there are reproductions of historical documents that illustrate the social currents of each period of time, from the Declaration of Independence, illustrating the spread of the idea of democracy, to a letter from Dvorák to his music publisher taking him to task for his anti-Czech sentiments.

Composers represented by their music are Beethoven, Berlioz, Liszt, Chopin, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Wagner, Glinka, Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Smetana, Dvorák, Fauré, Grieg, Mahler, Rachmaninov and Elgar. Among the musical selections are all sorts of music, from the Beethoven symphony movement, chamber music of Schumann, a song by Schubert, an operatic duet (from 'Don Carlo') by Verdi, Fauré's Romance for Violin and Piano, the first movement of Mahler's First Symphony, a Chopin polonaise, and a Liszt piano concerto. The recordings of all these works are excerpted from Naxos's huge library of releases of classical music, and the performances are universally quite acceptable and in good stereo sound.

Provided as a kind of background for the newcomer to classical music is a Timeline of the Romantic Era (music, history, art, literature) so they can place various composers and their works in a cultural context. There are extensive suggestions for further listening, a listing of Romantic era composers including many more than those whose works are included here, and a helpful glossary of musical terms written in everyday language.

This is a very thoughtfully done short-course in the Romantic era that will not only answer questions of casual classical music listeners but also stimulate interest in further exploration. I recommend it highly.
