Murray Perahia has recorded all of the Mozart piano concertos, and his effortlessly brilliant accounts can be recommended across the board. The playing is on the highest level--vibrant, unfailingly beautiful, wonderfully acute in its grasp of style and expression. Equally outstanding is the work of the English Chamber Orchestra, which Perahia leads from the keyboard. The recorded sound, while not as radiant as the music-making, is consistently good and well balanced from disc to disc. --Ted Libbey

    Murray Perahia has recorded all of the Mozart piano concertos, and his effortlessly brilliant accounts can be recommended across the board. The playing is on the highest level--vibrant, unfailingly beautiful, wonderfully acute in its grasp of style and expression. Equally outstanding is the work of the English Chamber Orchestra, which Perahia leads from the keyboard. The recorded sound, while not as radiant as the music-making, is consistently good and well balanced from disc to disc. --Ted Libbey

    This would be an excellent CD if it weren't for that noise on it produced by violins and other strings. The noise resembles not so much Mozart, as it was too faint in places to be audible, and the melody failed to move, but rather an atmospheric effect that even Enya would reject. Murray Perahia once again reveals why most classical fans of his don't have jobs as musicians, for they stink at this thing called "life," which involves having the guts to make music as opposed to falling in love with the neat tone one's instrument produces if one aims to make the faintest sound possible. Someone told me Perahia's "Goldberg Variations" were as good as Glenn Gould's, btw, and that was when I attempted to sell them the Brooklyn Bridge, but his Mom, whom he was living with at age 42, stopped me from getting a quick $20.

    To conclude: it sounds like Mozart, but lacks any sense of where the music is going (if you sing choral music, you'll know exactly what I mean by this complaint), and has dynamics that sound tentative in key places. Tempo drags. The sound is a "nice" one, if you know nothing about classical music, and want a CD to complement your collection of CD's of "ocean water" sounds and other assorted products.

    I've had this recording almost since the moment it came out in 1990 and I honestly can say it's one of 10 CDs I'd take to a desert island. Perahia's playing is sublime, and the orchestra supports him well on my two very favorite Mozart concerti. There may be more modern recordings of these works now, but I daresay none with the same richness of performance this CD offers.

    I loved almost everything: the piano lines, the balance between the orchestra and this marvelous soloist... but I think we're not used to hear this kind of hiss on a digital recording. Anyway, for being what it is, Murray Perahia deserves a praise.

    This recording of Mozart Piano Concertos 19 & 23 is an absolute thing of beauty. Concerto No.23 in A Major, K.488 in the hands of Murray Perahia is splendid indeed. The English Chamber Orchestra is very good, and the digital recording is in the demonstration class. This concerto is a masterpiece of delicate beauty combined with inner vitality, and is probably my second favorite Mozart Piano Concerto (No.22 is number 1 for me). Mozart's woodwind writing, especially the clarinets in No.23, is incredible. (Mozart only used clarinets in 3 of the 27 concerti, nos. 22, 23 and 24.) Both concertos on this CD were written with very nice woodwind parts, and Concerto No.19 in F Major, K.459 is no exception. If you purchase no other Mozart Piano Concertos on CD, you MUST get this one. Very highly recommended by a BIG Mozart enthusiast!

    To my ears, Perahia excells himself, and all the competitiors, on this disc. With this two highly contrasting Concertos he shows his fingers, his mind, his taste, his utmost musicality, but, above all, his soul, going from euforia to despair and back again with commitment and high artistry. Tempos are perfectly judged and all the feelings of joy and tragedy convincingly coveyed. For me, this is the best release of his Mozart cycle ! And one of the best of his whole output ! Do not miss it !

    Not much to say. As usual, Perahia's conduction from the keybord blends the piano and the orchestra in ways we are just not used to. This is an awesome version of these wonderful concertos. For those who are used to Perahia's sound, color, dynamics, and ever-fresh interpretations, this disc will not dissapoint.

    I am a big fun of Fazil Say and I admire his talent. Whenever possible I try to go to his concerts in Turkey. This CD is definetely worth buying. He is playing Mozart Piano Concertos like he is dancing with his piano... He grabs and takes you into his wonderworld. If you like classical music especially piano concertos you should have it in your collection.

    Are there any music-lovers who having heard Mozart's piano concertos don't love them? (Well, there may be a few of them; I know one or two.) The rest of us cannot seem to get enough of them. Hence innumerable recordings of these and the other most popular concerti. This CD contains three of my favorites; indeed, I have played two of them and know them pretty well.

    The one I haven't played, but one I adore most of the 1782 concerti, is the K. 414. I am always beguiled by the opening of the first movement--particularly that lovely second theme with unison violins followed by unison violas with their three-note tag at the end of each phrase. Nobody but Mozart could have thought of something so simple and so incredibly lovely. Fazil Say, a thirtyish Turkish pianist who has made quite a splash recently not least because of a couple of CDs featuring his own compositions, plays in a masculine, straight-ahead but still nicely nuanced fashion here. If I'm not mistaken he supplies tiny elaborations (some maybe not so tiny) at cadential points, presumably his own, here and there in this concerto. He has a nice touch and an ability to sustain a line: e.g., note the return of the main section in the Andante movement.

    This is followed by the universally loved C major concerto of 1785, K. 467, with its nostalgically beautiful middle movement made more famous by the movie, 'Elvira Madigan.' I venture to guess that this concerto is the one Say has known and played the longest. He seems demonstrably more at ease in it--not to say that he doesn't manage the other two concerti quite nicely, it's just that here he seems even more at home here--and indeed he has written his own cadenzas (as well as a few semi-cadential foofaraws here and there). I suspect anyone coming on this performance unawares would be startled by his first movement cadenza which is sassy, containing as it does little crushed grace-notes that bounce around all the way from the topmost to the lowest notes of the Mozartean piano. I certainly was startled and was prepared not to like it, but it grew on me and has consistently made me smile when it comes around. The only problem with this cadenza is that is comes just before the mentioned second movement and the switch from sass to nostalgic melancholy is a little unsettling. That said, the Andante is played with subtle touch and grace. Griffiths and the Zürcher Kammerorchester, here and elsewhere, play with unfailingly beautiful tone, sensitive phrasing and clean ensemble. The Rondo finale is a given a fairy-like tutti opening until just before the piano's rumbustious entry, but from then on it's a romp. In this movement, too, there is a Say-composed cadenza, this one less startling but none the less effective.

    Possibly my favorite slow movement in all of Mozart is that in the A major concerto, K. 488. That f sharp minor theme is, I'm convinced, directly from heaven. Say plays it lovingly and is supported in kind by the orchestra; clarinet, bassoon and flute continue with the second theme gorgeously . The two outer movements are a suitable contrast to this heavenly middle movement but also contrast with each other. The first movement, although an allegro, has an air of morbidity about it, but the rondo finale is one of the most exhilarating ever to come from Mozart's pen. Say and his colleagues give it precisely the kind of brio it requires.

    There have been many, many recordings, as I say, of these concerti, but I have spent several days listening and re-listening to these performances and am fairly sure they will remain favorites, although I certainly wouldn't want to be without those of, say, Perahia, Curzon, Brendel, Solomon and Ashkenazy.

    Recommended.

    This CD is magic. The Mozart Piano Concertos always put me in a good mood and leave me feeling happy. The Schroter Piano is RARELY performed yet it is such a fine piece of music, especially the third movement. I whistle this movement to cheer me up or when I'm in a particularly fine mood.             Live performances from Edwin Fischer's final decade of concerts feature him as soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. Fischer's rare interpretive insights can best be heard in his exalted slow movement of Brahms's Sonata No. 3, earning appreciative applause from the knowledgeable audience. The set includes inevitable finger slips and wrong notes, inconsequential byproducts of his striving for artistic integrity. More important, his unerring sense of tempo conveys the heart of the music. Slow movements are soulful but liquid. Drama is always present, allied to a gorgeous tone. His reputation for seriousness doesn't prevent a romp through the Rondo of Beethoven's Concerto No. 1 or the beautifully phrased, long-breathed lyricism of the Romance movement of Mozart's 20th Concerto. Appropriately, since Fischer was an outstanding Bach interpreter, there's a lot of Bach here, including a Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 unannounced anywhere on the box, track listings, or notes. Much of the Bach on this set will sound dated and heavy to modern ears, but it's compelling nonetheless. Those who know Fischer's lofty Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 with Furtwängler (Testament) will be surprised to hear this nearly contemporaneous, swifter, and less symphonic live version with Hans Munch. It's a highlight of a set with few duds. At six discs for the price of four, and nicely packaged in a space-saving box with good notes and variable sound (mostly vintage broadcast quality), the set is a valuable tribute to a great artist. --Dan Davis
