Music of Richard Wilson
Editorial Reviews
Village Voice
Eclogue is full of interest when it scurries and dashes about in its fluent atonality, or perhaps atonal fluency, and when it shimmers through a neo-Debussyan piano technique, but less so when it resorts to over-used devices like those Crumb-y onstinati on stopped strings while simultaneously running out of ides. Ballad, however, lends all manner of apt musical color to reinforce the macabre humor of Vladimir Nabokov's poem, and Sperry and Allen balance the scare and the smile just right. Leighton Kerner
American Record Guide, Nov/Dec, 1991
The major work in this compendium of American composer Richard Wilson's music is the Third Quartet. Atonal in language, late-romantic in emotion, this quartet moves froma vernal, flowering, lyrical opening movement of considerable freshness and beauty, through a more impersonla central schero, to a complex and passionate final elegy of visionary intensity. This is a serious, well-crafted, uncompromising, powerful quartet that should not be dismissed as academic. The Ballad of Longwood Glen is...

For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and The London Boys Choir. This single disc version showcases all of Phantom's key songs (a deluxe, double-disc edition is also available), with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emmy Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs -- which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Perfect music!.......2007-06-11
The Phantom of the Opera is my favorie musical of all time, simply put. The movie is absolutely incredible, so I just had to have the soundtrack. Though this one-disc version leaves out many excellent pieces, it still has the bulk of the music.
First of all, let me just say that Emmy Rossum (Christine) sounds MUCH more elegant and true than Sarah Brightman (who overpronounces to the point of absurdity) in the classic London Cast recording of the musical.
Second of all, Gerard Butler may not be as operatic as Michael Crawford, but he is a much better actor, and the simple sound of his voice IS the Phantom. "Music of the Night" is so beautiful when he sings it, unlike Michael Crawford's mockery of the piece as he tries to sing those bass notes and just ends up mushing it all together into a horrible, overpronounced, over-legato MESS!
Now, Patrick Wilson! He has such a wonderful voice it just makes me faint! Wow! He is, I swear, the greatest tenor alive. Anyone who criticizes his beautiful performance of Raoul is simply insane.
This soundtrack has some utterly perfect music, such as
1. Gerard's incredible performance of "Music of the Night." He sings so beautifully at the end with that last "night" that one can scarcely believe it.
2. "Down Once More," the final scene of the movie can produce tears even without images on a screen. Hearing the three characters' voices together is sheer perfection!
3. "All I Ask of You" has wonderful emotion on all fronts, and Rossum and Wilson blend together into pure love. Bravo! Brava! Bravi!
4. "All I Ask of You (Reprise)"... It is so truly heartbreaking that I can never stop crying. "You will curse the day you did not do... all that the Phantom asked of you!" It has such a blend of emotion that one can only sit and listen, in bliss and awe.
This soundtrack, though missing some songs (get the two-disc set if you want them all), is basically perfect. I will love this music and these wonderful singers forever.

Sound Track POTO.......2007-07-20
A most excellent experience of music, sound and orchestration that brings to life the drama and tragedy of the Phantom of the Opera.
Hooray for Gerard Butler!.......2007-05-27
I'm in love with this cd - it has every part of the movie on it as well as the end theme (Learn to be Lonely). Gerard has an amazing voice, and the quality is fantastic. The orchestra is incredible, too. If you're the type that liked the play or the movie and are always humming the songs to yourself, this is a great cd for you to buy.
The Phantom of the Opera (The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack).......2007-05-23
I like this prodduct, it is essential the same as 'listening' to the movie using only a CD player. Ninety-nine percent (99%) of the sound of the movie was preserved. However, this deluxe motion picture soundtrack product is played better on a computer than on a CD player. A computer always gives a smooth transition between tracks, whereas, a CD player might not. For exmaple, in the transition between the tracks of 'Wandering Child' and 'Swordfight', Raoul was trying to stop Christine from responding to Phantom's call, Raoul screamed: "...this man this thing is not your father." On the computer, you will hear the whole sentence, whereas on the CD player, you only hear: "...this man this thing" and then it jumps to the next track, so the words 'is not your father' were being cut off. Also, there is an abrupt jump from 'Chandelier crack' to 'Down Once More'. The transition is just not smooth.
I think the soundtrack editor could avoid this problem by choosing a better point to end and start a track. By far the worst editing place was that the song of 'Point of No Return' was cut right in the middle of the song.
Since I also have the regular CD soundtrack (in addition to the deluxe soundtrack from the original motion picture), I can compare these two products side by side. The sound quality of the regular CD soundtrack is noticeably better, clearer, and no background noise.

Blown away!.......2007-05-08
This story and its beautiful music take me away to another place and time...it sweeps me up into what I refer to as a state of "Gerryapnea" because I can hardly breathe when the Phantom is on camera...all this and he can sing beautifully too!! It doesn't get any better than this....
Don't think for a minute that you have to be under 50 years old in order to appreciate this man...he is definitely awesome and just getting started in his acting career...we definitely have to watch out for Gerry Butler.
Loved it........2007-04-22
This is great for traveling -- or escaping -- because if you have seen this movie, closing your eyes and listening to the music is like watching the movie all over again.

very good, even better things to come.......2007-07-16
This is one of the "transitional" albums between the psychedelic PT and the current PT sound, which I don't think can be easily categorized, besides calling it, rock, with metal, acoustic, and electronica elements.
I want to call the attention of potential buyers of the double disc special edition. The second disc has a 5.1 mix and a high resolution stereo mix that can only be played with a dvd-a capable player. Only the dvd-video portion (Piano Lessons video, and some pictures) can be played on regular dvd players. When I finally get around buying a dvd-a capable player, this will be one of the first dvd's to spin.
Porcupine Tree ..What can you say????.......2007-07-02
Someone told me to download some porcupine tree and "I DID". Now this is a band (and I say as a conasewer of good"efing" music and with-out-a-dout the music "thats takes ya back!! Don't try to analyze it just listen....Maybe you have to comsume sum schrooms!, Their music no matter what cd you buy tells you they're exceptional musicans, perhaps the lyrics aren't that full, but what is?! ..."IS".......Great Group!!! Should always be remember!!!!!
Fantastic!.......2007-06-20
I have about six PT albums, and this one is the best of them, very highly recommended for prog fans.
NOT Stupid , Actually!.......2007-05-30
This impressive re-master of Stupid Dream once again finds Steven Wilson to be the Master of 5.1 surround sound mixing. The stereo remaster is fabulous in itself, but the music comes alive on the 5.1 DTS disc! You will find plenty to like here from fantastic song structure to virtuoso playing of All instruments by the stellar musicians that are "the Tree". If you enjoy this, like anyone couldn't, then I recommend the DTS 5.1 In Absentia and Deadwing discs as well. Neither comes with the companion CD for the car, but so what! They both will blow you away. For fans of PT, Pink Floyd, Rush, Tool, Etc. In Absentia (Dts)
Not so stupid...but UNREAL.......2007-05-07
This CD is one of their best...I have either heard or have all of PT's stuff, and have heard all of their 'stages' of development'. All are great, from the early spacey to the latest heavy stuff - but this one seems to have 'caught' them in their stage of transition to making more streamlined stuff, but no sacrificing their roots, selling out, or none of that s**t...it is just plain beautiful bloody poetry. The only one to date that comes close is 'In Absentia', which is unreal in and of itself.
This band is taking music to the next stratosphere, so join in and check out this now-remastered and re-released masterpiece from one of England's gems...you WILL get hooked! This is seminal stuff that any music lover will eat up in a second.
You may wonder what the heck to PT sound like...well, think Tool meets Pink Floyd, touch of Dream Theater and Spocks Beard, some Yes and Genesis, well maybe even some spacey bands I don't even know of, and some other stuff I can't put my finger on...but their sound is unforgettable...

Before the Mars Volta made prog-metal fashionable again - with a little help from the Dillinger Escape Plan and My Chemical Romance - Porcupine Tree's 2002 US debut, In Abstentia, had already laid most of the groundwork. For the middle-aged British quartet led by Steven Wilson, '70s rockers like Rush and Yes (with whom the group toured after the album's release) never went out of style but instead left behind grandiose scriptures to be studied for all of eternity. So while tighter and more efficient in spots ("Shallow," "Halo"), Porcupine Tree's Deadwing faithfully keeps the technically proficient epics coming, peaking with multi-tentacled 12-minute "Arriving Somewhere (But Not Here)." --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
Porcupine Tree defies categorization. This unique London-based quartet make unconventional, uncompromising music that qualifies them as Europe's premiere art-rock cult band. Porcupine Tree's cogent musical personality is a force to be reckoned with. Porcupine Tree's intelligent and accessible sound will appeal not only to metal enthusiasts and twenty-something dark wave fans, but will also fit in with today's more adventurous alternative station playlists.

Deadwing: Prog Rock Returns.......2007-07-10
I first heard of this band through the track "Lazarus," which I heard on Pandora.com (an excellent website). The song was haunting, beautiful, and highly original. Upon discovering Deadwing on iTunes, I found that most of the 30-second samples were not to my taste. But once I finally got this whole album, I was impressed. Here's a quick overview of the songs:
Deadwing: The CD kicks off with a spacey electronic synth riff, then launches into a multi-layered epic with haunting melodies and amazing guitar work. Nearing 10 minutes, this is one of the longest songs. It is not as accessible as most of the album, but it has since grown on me.
Shallow: Chugging guitars and a catchy tune completely change the mood of the CD, with one of the most easily accessible songs.
Lazarus: Once again signaling a change in mood, Lazarus, the song that introduced me to PT, is a beautiful piano driven song that is also very accessible. It also contains my favorite piano part in a song ever.
Halo: Switching back to a heavier sound, Halo has a strange surreal tone to it with its cool bass riff and muffled vocals. Definitely one of the stranger songs, but it also features excellent guitar and piano work.
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here: Opening with ambient synths and guitar, this song quickly progresses into a two chord song that stretches for 12 minutes. However, it may be the best track. Sounding vaguely like Floyd, this song starts mellow, then launches into amazing instrumentation and haunting lyrics.
Mellotron Scratch: Another beautiful song with multilayered vocals that starts out like something out of 28 Days Later, but then changes into a cool jam at the end.
Open Car: Another switch in mood switches to chugging guitars, like Shallow, but with stranger and creepier lyrics. The song ends with strumming acoustic guitars.
The Start of Something Beautiful: This one starts off with bass and synth again, but leads into a song about a broken relationship. The lyrics drip with irony, and the guitar and piano work is hypnotic.
Glass Arm Shattering: This was one of my least favorites at first, but has since grown on me a lot. It starts with a simple riff, and then we're in for more beautiful multi-layered harmonies. The song becomes more and more epic, until it fades out with radio static.
Overall, this CD calls out to say that prog rock is still around and as great as ever. While it may take a few listens to like every song on this album, it is definitely an album worth listening to.
Deadwing soars to new heights of prog rock.......2007-07-05
Where is prog rock today? Just listen to this CD and you'll find out. PT, along with Dream Theater and some select others, are paving the way to new heights in "Prog Rock" - a term that most would relate to 'boring' or 'dead' stuff today. Thankfully, there are a legion of fans that don't exactly want good Prog Rock to go away!!
PT stretches into new territory with Deadwing. Some heavy, some soft, and all beautifully composed. The overall flow of this CD seems to come together better than the brilliant 'In Absentia', more like a heavier 'Stupid Dream'. My main frustration with 'In Absentia' is that the masterpiece moments were injected with 2 or 3 tracks that should have been left in the studio - not so with Deadwing. Mind you, there is no 'Even Less' or 'Blackest Eyes', but this CD grabs you from start to finish, bending new curves into the prog rock landscape.
If you enjoy this CD's mellower moments, check out the Wilson's 'Blackfield' side project - it's great stuff!! In the meantime, add this gem to your shopping cart NOW!
Porcupine destroys..........2007-04-27
Why aren't these guys on the radio? Well, I'm doing my part. This past Christmas all my presents included either "In Absentia" or "Deadwing". The selection as to who got which album was purely random simply because both albums are superb. Everyone, absolutely everyone who got this a part of their gift loved it and bought the counterpart.
Quite possibly some of the finest mixed and mastered material ever available makes it an even better treat. Wilson is some kind of genius with his use of light versus dark. And now with the release of "Blank Planet" this completes just an amazing trilogy of albums that are constantly playing back-to-back-to-back in my car, home stereo, and computer.
Better than Great and then some.......2007-04-03
I'm closing in on 50 years of age. Way back in the late sixties and the early seventies I was constantly bombarded with music that was inventive and always good. It was a high point in the history of rock, and from what I had been able to hear since then I assumed I would never hear anything that good again. Sure there were some good things coming out now and then, but nothing compared to those old bands and so I resigned myself to what I thought was the fact that the greatest that rock music had to offer was in the past. In fact I have to admit I was starting to grow a little bored with the whole rock and roll scene recently. And then just two weeks ago I heard Porcupine Tree for the first time. I couldn't believe my ears! Here was a band that created not just good music, but great music! I heard Deadwing and immediately went out and started buying their records. I bought Up the Downstair and In Absentia along with Deadwing, and I loved it all. The next day I sought out more. I found Signify and Stupid Dream and ordered copies of Coma Divine, On the Sunday of Life and The Sky Moves Sideways. All of those arrived within a week and during that week I downloaded the unreleased and live music available from their online shop. In short I've become a Porcupine Tree addict! And what luck: they have a new album coming out later this month! I went to a rather well known download store and bought the Blackfield 2 release mainly because it includes the title track from the forthcoming album, but I'm also really enjoying the Blackfield record as well. Needless to say I've spent a lot of money on their music in a very short period of time, and every single dime was well spent. According to the insert information in the repackaged versions of Signify and Coma Divine, both Lightbulb Sun and Recordings will also be re-released later this year, so I'll hold off on buying used copies of those (if I can wait).
Porcupine Tree have restored my faith in rock music again. I haven't been this excited about music since the good old days. In fact, thanks to Porcupine Tree, the good old days are here again. Unfortunately you just can't hear great music like this on the radio, so the only way to know it's there is for people who know about it to spread the word. For anyone who loves Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Tangerine Dream I would say buy some Porcupine Tree. You'll probably wonder why you've never heard of them before as well. It surely shows the sad state of the music industry when something this good doesn't get the exposure it deserves.
Buy it. Play it. Buy a copy for a friend. Long Live Porcupine Tree.
If anyone has any recommendations beyond Porcupine Tree that they think I would like, I would appreciate it.
Start of Something Beautiful.......2007-03-07
This British quartet, who have had a cult following for many years now, could truly be the next big rock band to shake some life into the music world again. As radio stations have literally lost any sense of keeping a freshness to rock music in the last few years, Porcupine Tree have a hard hitting sound mixed with layers of psychedelic and progressive rock. They've also honed in on a sound containing a variety of their favorite influences as you hear their Moody Blues meets Pink Floyd meets Jethro Tull meets Rush background. But what makes them so intriguing is how they sound so modern. Steve Wilson can lay down an adrenalin vocal while the band jams to songs like the title cut, "Shallow," "Halo," and a twelve-minute masterpiece in "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here." But all the songs help to create a musical meltdown with lyrics filled with emotion and intellect. Deadwing is like taking a dark, mysterious journey of the heart and mind. What better album for the old-time music lovers to embrace music again, while grabbing the attention of a new generation. Like the way grunge surfaced in the early 90's and breathed new life into the music scene for years to come, Porcupine Tree can offer the same kind of resuscitation to lead the emergence of a new musical subcluture.

Customer Reviews:
Middle of the road wedding music.......2007-01-20
I bought this cd because I had everything in my wedding planned to the last tiny detail except the ceremony music. All the songs on the cd are nice traditional wedding songs. I did not use any of the music from the cd, but I am glad I bought it because it helped me realize that traditional wedding music was not what I wanted. All and all a nice classical music cd but not for brides who really want a personal ceremony. BTW I went with Enya and Lorena McKennitt.
just what I was looking for.......2007-01-10
We wanted traditional wedding music and found it in this CD. I'm no music expert, but the arrangements and performances seemed fine. I would definitely recommend this CD for any bride looking for a concise collection of traditional wedding pieces.
Most Chosen Selections.......2006-03-13
As a wedding officiant, my wife and I are often asked to assist the couple with other services for their ceremony, such as music. For this, we have a very large selection in our music library to choose from. We have put together a catalog of cd's that we loan out to the couple for their review, and most often, their selections come from BRIDE'S GUIDE TO WEDDING MUSIC.
If you're planning a traditional or formal wedding on a budget, this cd has it all. There are even two selections of Wagner's "Wedding March" to choose from. Only two of the selections have vocals, the rest are all extraordinary instrumental selections.
Often, even around the house or in my car, I find myself listening to this cd. The music is soothing, refreshing, uplifting and most enjoyable. I recommend this cd over all other wedding music cd's.
Another Great Reference CD.......2006-01-09
This is a great compilation, CD, along with Bride's Guide to Wedding Music Volume 2, to use as a reference for some of the more popular wedding songs; just about everything on here is standard fare for weddings. All of the musicians are generally superb, and the sound quality is very good. However, this is most useful if you are playing the CD at your wedding, or using it as a reference CD to talk over potential music selections with an organist, a string quartet, etc. Like my review for Volume 2, I only gave it four stars based on practicality, not on quality. If it were just quality, I would give it five stars. I purchased this CD since I am in the process of making my own wedding CD (I am a professional, freelance violinist), and this was nice to listen to, even just as background music for dinner. BTW: beware of reviewers who don't use their names, especially "A music fan." This is most likely the producer of the "Wedding Traditions" CD and he slanders other CDs so his will look better. You'd think that in the wedding music business people would have better ethics, but unfortunately, that's not always the case. The best advice I can give, as a classical musician myself, if to take time to listen to the sound clips, and if possible, try to find them on iTunes where they might sound higher quality. This is the only real way of knowing whether the CD is right for you.
A Nice CD.......2005-12-30
This is a very nice CD.
Our daughter used some of the songs on this CD
and some of the songs that are on the
"Classical Wedding Traditions" CD for the wedding.
She also used many of the songs on the
"New Wedding Traditions Volume I" CD
Amazon is a great place to find good wedding music

Purcell worked immensely hard on his score for The Fairy Queen, but the original was lost. The version on which this performance is based arrived at London's Royal Academy of Music by devious routes a century and a half later. But in Roger Norrington's hands, it emerges in its pristine beauty: you could not wish for a better introduction to Purcell's greatest stage work. Only a "semi-opera," maybe, but one studded with exquisite songs and majestic choruses. The anonymous libretto is loosely based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, but its inexhaustible melodic invention is imbued with Shakespearean magic. Some songs have become concert favorites, notably "O let me weep," but the joy of this double CD is that you discover dozens more, and of comparable quality. Purcell's music breathes in perfect tandem with the words and Norrington creates out of this a riveting symbiosis. The singing is pure Baroque-instrumental clarity of tone, unsullied by any vibrato, and the playing is immaculate. Comedy and pathos are both here in spades; vast space is evoked through the pairing of flutes and the echoing of trumpets. And so are all the colors of nature: Purcell's music foreshadows Vivaldi. --Michael Church
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and Lovely Music.......2004-02-06
This 'semi-opera' is one of the last works of Henry Purcell, the greatest English Baroque composer. Essentially a series of scenes with linking music, The Fairy Queen, like other semi-operas, lacks the integrity of plot and action of real opera. In performance, I suspect this work would be somewhat static, sort of a serious music variety show. The music, however, is lovely. The Fairy Queen contains some of Purcell's best vocal and instrumental work with some components that became part of the concert repertoire. Hearing all the music together is a fine experience, though the semi-opera format tends to work against the dramatic and musical cohesion which can be found in even merely good operas. The vocalists are splendid, particularly Lorraine (as she was then spelling her name) Hunt. The orchestral playing is just as good.
If you like Monteverdi, you will love Purcell.......2002-08-21
Absolutely beautifull baroque opera! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. If you liked Monteverdi's Coronation of Poppea, it is a must to have this baroque masterpiece! It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well.

Most famous for her operatic roles and classical recital performances, soprano Dawn Upshaw will surprise her fans and impress popular song aficionados with these superlative renditions of classic songs by Rodgers and Hart. Unlike many of her operatic peers who have no clue how to pull off a true pop style, Upshaw does it expertly, elegantly, and naturally, with class to spare. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
dawn sings Rodgers and Hart.......2007-03-29
No complaints - Dawn is her usual delicious self.
Wonderful.......2007-01-10
Dawn Upshaw uses her beautiful voice to maximum benefit on the Rodgers and Hart songs.
A must album for all lovers of classic Broadway.......2004-08-23
Dawn Upshaw is absolutely marvelous in these renditions of classic Rodgers & Hart songs. Not since Rise Stevens has an opera singer shown such talent for singing showtunes. Unlike Renee Fleming, Ms. Upshaw sings these songs clearly and with perfect diction, without embellishments or unnecessary vocal pyrotechnics. These songs should be sung "straight" as if it were and Dawn sings each one beautifully. Her phrasing is impeccable, her voice is clear like a bell. This album should serve as a case study of how opera singers can tackle showtunes.
Dick and Larry Would Be Pleased.......2004-02-28
As I love both Rodgers and Hart's songs and the voice of Dawn Upshaw, this CD was an obvious choice. Upshaw is one of the very few opera singers today who are equally at home in popular song. Her crystal-pure voice and diction sound completely natural in these sixteen song classics. "He Was Too Good to Me," "Manhattan," "Sing for Your Supper," "Thou Swell," "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "A Ship Without a Sail," "He Dances on My Ceiling," and the superbly arranged medley of "Nobody's Heart" and "Little Girl Blue" are among my favorite tracks. This is an essential disc if you love Rodgers and Hart.
Great Album.......2001-08-26
Though I prefer her "I Wish It So" or Vernon Duke album, this is a great recording. The voice is a little too bright, but Upshaw does a wonderful job interpreting these pieces and she is never too operatic. It's a light, lyrical collection and lots of fun. I especially enjoyed "Sing for Your Supper," in which she sings her own back-up. If you are looking for a collection of light music sung by a fantastically trained singer, this is it!

Amazon.com essential recording
Although Einstein on the Beach is by definition an opera, Philip Glass's most famous work also transcends traditional music categories. Glass avoided all vestiges of plot in the piece and dug deep into his quiver of repetitions to create an artfully unnerving five hours of brilliance. The instrumental ensemble never exceeds five members, playing electric keyboards, saxophones, flutes, and a single violin. Furthermore, the music congregates around the upper registers, often darting through its loops at seemingly incredible paces. The chorus bears huge chops, creating a dense, if silkenly staccato, series of juts, and a powerful array of higher-register annunciations that ring with the aural power of leaping, blurring filaments. This 1993 version of Einstein truly supersedes its predecessors, stretching to around 190 minutes over three CDs. There is a strong current of postmodern collage throughout the piece, with rafts of pop culture references. But Einstein, after all, is indeed based loosely on Albert Einstein and ends with booming allusions to nuclear annihilation and mathematics. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
"...it could be very fresh and clean.".......2007-04-18
Einstein On The Beach was first performed in 1976 and the first recording was released in 1979. This version of Einstein was release in 1993. To date, these existing reviews span a period of 8 years - which to me, is a testament to the significance of this masterwork.
And in the same spirit as another reviewer, I too must confess that I prefer the original recording over this revised, modified and re-recorded version. I will say that this version is not at all "bad" - it is excellent. But to me the heart of the music lies with the original recording. I can understand the desire to release a "newer" version of this recording, but unfortunately in it's more polished form, it has lost a great deal of charm and, as has been mentioned, humor. Oddly the readings in this new recording sound very affected and almost pretentious. The music here played with a digital perfection has a sense of more mechanicality and a less human feel than the previous release. Between the two versions, I think there is about 20 additional minutes on this re-recording than the earlier one, but for my taste this does not really add anything of startling consequence to the piece overall.
It is said that all music is mathemetics. And since we all know about Einstein and his love for the violin, it was an incredible intelligent choice to merge the two into a singular revolutionary concept. As the reader is aware: it is now generally recognized as one of the most significant contributions to late 20th century music and performance, and simultaneously re-defined the potential of opera.
So why buy this edition over the other? Honestly, I can't give you one solid reason. Both have positives and negatives. Get both. But listen to the earlier one first!
Hard to fault.......2007-04-13
Before this, I'd only really heard Glass's solo piano music. Where I found his repetitive figures unmoving in that context, here - fleshed out with vocals and synths - they become something else, something hypnotic, beguiling and quite beautiful. Even over 3 hours, it is hard to tire of the gradually shifting rhythms, which move at break-neck speed.
It is hard to grasp the effect the music has by listening to the samples above, and you shouldn't think, 'well, this is fine - but for 3 hours?!' - as it is much more than the sum of its parts. That effect is akin to a visual illusion on an epic scale. Only musical, if you will.
This edition is hard to fault: it's very well recorded, despite the set being 14 years old and it's all very attractively packaged. The booklet is thorough, although I would have liked to see some colour photos from the performance, not just the badly reproduced black & white ones we are provided with. That aside, well worth the money.
unironic, inferior to original recording.......2006-03-01
Einstein on the Beach is one of the great works of music/theatre (as opposed to opera, or even traditional "musical theatre") of the 20th century, but the rerecording suffers from the bloated, cheap pretentiousness that characterizes almost all of Philip Glass's later work. Dilettantes criticize the original for the "artificial" timbre of the synthesizers, ignorant of the idea that the sound of the synthesizers are part of the piece as a historical text, or that the grating sound of the original recording actually emphasizes the formal qualities of Glass's minimalism. Utterly lacking in the irony and wit that made the first not only fascinating, but a pleasure to listen to, the rerecording is just dull.
"...and I wasn't tempted to buy one...".......2006-02-26
I seem to be in the minority, but I prefer the original recording. What this version gains in performance and sonics, it loses in bite and immediacy. I came to Glass from rock music. The earlier recording had attitude and human energy. This one is fine art. I guess it depends what you're in the mood to hear.
The text has been altered quite a bit. I can live with everything except the new "Mr. Bojangles"; for some reason, Glass decided that the speaker should EMOTE in an odd self-conscious way. It doesn't work. The deadpan humor is gone.
The new sax line in "Building" (formerly "Building/Train") seems to have wandered in from a different universe. We're zooming through a mathematical soundworld ... and there's Kenny G. This piece has been extensively revised. The old version suggested a train at full throttle. This version is much slower, with muted organ and a meditative vibe.
The "Bed" aria is technically flawless (a definite "improvement"), but it doesn't have the plaintive, haunting feel of the first recording. This singer has a strong, formal, "operatic" style.
Someone was wondering why the earlier version was a 4-CD set. The reason is, it was originally a 4-LP box. At the time, 4 vinyl records meant 4 shiny compact discs. CDs were still a strange new medium for rich people. It took a while for the public to demand longer discs and lower prices.
Freakish.......2006-02-12
Philip Glass will always be the finest when it comes to Classical Minimalism. Just listen to this 3-disc set of Einstein on the Beach. It's dazzling, dizzying, and menacingly addictive to hear. Definitely gets fives stars from me.
I'd also recommend Glass's film score to the movie "Koyaanisqatsi." It's as bold as Einstein on the Beach.
