Poulenc: Gloria; Stabat Mater

Poulenc, the spoiled kid of a wealthy pharmaceuticals magnate, was the last person in the world you would think of as a one of this century's great composers of sacred music. But here he is, setting these ancient Latin texts in his own eclectic style, and proving once and for all that even religious music can be sensual, toe-tapping, and above all, fun. Both of these works became instant classics from their initial performances for exactly these reasons, and also because of their sincerity and lack of pretension. These excellent performances have been extremely well recorded, and Yan Pascal Tortelier projects the music with just the right combination of elegance and innocence. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best recording of the gloria.......2005-10-09

This is the simply a slpendid recording- well paced, energetic and in excellent sound. I have a suspicion that many people drawn to these works pay undo emphasis on the choir [or they are choir singers] and understandably get frustrating when the choir is not front and center in the musical proceedings. But what Poulenc wrote here does not emphasize the choir [he was a master instrumentalist after all!] so the orchestra should be more prominent at times. Ragardless, this is a great performance!

5 out of 5 stars "Everybody's a critic"!.......2005-07-13

Do you seriously think the distinguished Deutsche Grammophon label would have released anything remotely as "sub-par" as suggested by SOME of the prior reviewers? Moreover, do you seriously think the renowned Seiji Ozawa and Kathleen Battle would have been associated with any project amounting to less than fully competent, professional performance? However, at least TWO of the prior reviewers (i.e., Jason Amsden/Boston--May 25, 1999, and the "Music Fan" from Grovers Corners, PA--September 18, 2003) did get it right. Read THOSE reviews, ignore the rest, buy this superb CD, and relish the music!

2 out of 5 stars Good performance, terrible recording.......2005-03-10

The recording quality of this performance is dismal. The choir sounds as if the mikes were covered with felt. The orchestra sound isn't as bad, but is muffled too.

I have numerous choir/orchestra recordings and this one is by far the worse in terms of the reproduction quality. I would not recommend this.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone is right..........2003-09-18

The reviewer who was disappointed that Battle sings a relatively
short (but critically important) part in this music is correct. She sings the part the Poulenc wrote, afterall! The listener who
was disappointed that the choir was out-volumed by the orchestra
in this recording was also correct. The choir should have been
given more volume in the final mix. Although I wish the choir
did have a stronger part in the final outcome (volume wise), I
wrote this blurb to let those interested in the best recorded version of this music on cd, that NOTHING ELSE in the amazon Poulenc catalog for these two compositions comes even remotely close to matching the fine orchestral performance, conducting and
engineering of this recording. The dynamics, tempi, and overall
glorious interpretation of the music on this cd is absolutely
exhilirating. Something I'm sure Poulenc would appreciate.

3 out of 5 stars Where's the choir?.......2002-10-08

These are both powerful choral works. However, the choir tends to be overpowered by the orchestra in this recording. The subtle intricacies of Poulenc's choral writing are often inaudible...and missed. Another recording would be a better choice, though these are works that should be a part of your music library.

I enjoyed this version of Poulenc's Gloria/Stabat Mater and would recomend it for all those looking for a stellar and rewarding performance from the choir, soloist, and conductor. However, let me say that the Gloria is indeed a piece in which all will instantly become attracted to it's upbeat and somber atmosphere. Yet, I'm not sure whether casual classical music fans will enjoy the Stabat Mater quite as much. For the Stabat Mater is quite a bit more somber with not as much upbeat music as the Gloria. Poulenc just couldnt seem to quite get it up to the level of his Gloria. This having been said though, I think that after listening to the Stabat Mater for a while, you might eventually take to it. My one really picky thing is I wished the opening "Gloria" was a bit faster. Oh well, if you intend to get a version of Poulenc's great chorus/orchestra pieces, this is one of the CD's to buy.

        5 out of 5 stars Poulenc's Choral Masterpieces.......2005-12-20

Francis Poulenc's sacred choral music is saturated in "Catholic worldliness", a state of mind where there is no real division between sacred and profane. Here, rather than being whisked away to a rarefied heavenly never-never land, the listener lives exuberantly in the "world" with all its earthiness. I believe this is the quality which some critics of Poulenc's time mistook for vulgarity when they heard the roguish yet strangely consistent mixture of asceticism and perfumed sweetness, austerity and debonair wit that make up the woof and warp of his music.

Poulenc's two big chorus-and-orchestra works from the 1950's represent the apex of his choral output. The exuberant GLORIA (1959) seems to sum up the essence of Poulenc - bright, jewel-like ideas expressed with crystaline clarity, simplicity, and directness. For me, the ideal recording of this piece is the one on Deutsche Grammophon with Seiji Ozawa, which dances with vitality and color. Hickox and his forces do a fine enough job here, but they don't take fire the way the Osawa version does; the lack of a bright acoustic doesn't help. STABAT MATER (1950) builds a compelling dramatic structure out of a series of miniature "altarpieces" which run the expressive gamut from stoic monumentality to childlike faith. Poulenc's chaste "white" style, deeply influenced by neoclassical Stravinsky, is at its most effective and powerful here. The orchestra and chorus are superb here, shaping the piece forcefully in terms of pacing and dynamics and creating a dramatic, emotional experience. Soprano Catherine Dubosc (who can be heard singing the role of Blanche in Poulenc's opera DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES on EMI) floats her ethereal solos in both the GLORIA and the STABAT with pure, white tone. Hers is a somewhat unconventional voice, with a quality of human frailty. LITANIES A LA VIERGE NOIRE, an intense supplicatory prayer for women's chorus, is a seminal work in Poulenc's output as it marks his return to the Catholic faith around 1935. The version with strings and percussion accompaniment presented here (there is also a version with organ accompaniment) is austere, mysterious, and moving. All in all, this is a worthy collection of Poulenc choral masterpieces.

        5 out of 5 stars Poulenc's Sacred Masterpieces.......2005-04-14

"The Janus-faced composer" - that's how Francis Poulenc
described himself. Contradiction permeated Poulenc, both the man and his music. He was at once a devout Catholic and a Parisian bon vivant, "part monk, part guttersnipe" (Claude Rostand's words). As a composer he is at once an unsentimental, objective neoclassicist (a la Stravinsky, whose stoic monumentality looms over the STABAT MATER), and a misty chromaticist in the French tradition; one part is hard steel, the other pastel-colored. It is with this paradoxical style that Poulenc crafted some of the most devout, strikingly original religious music of the 20th century. Both the STABAT MATER (1950) and the GLORIA (1959) are among Poulenc's masterpieces. The former is more dramatic, consisting of a number of short movements for the most part alternating slow and fast. Jubilant and succinct, the GLORIA is one of the 20th century's most popular choral works. LITANIES A LA VIERGE NOIRE dates from the onset of Poulenc's religious conversion and is a typically heartfelt and intensely prayerful work for women's chorus and organ (it also exists in a version with orchestral accompaniment). For me, the ideal recording of the STABAT and the GLORIA is the one on Deutsche Grammophon with Seiji Osawa leading the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and Boston Symphony. But these works are well served by a chorus which lends proper French diction to the Latin. (Poulenc heard Latin in a distinctively French way, resulting in accentuation such as "in EX-cel-SIS De-O"). The acousitc is spacious and churchy rather than "concert-hall" (it was recorded in a Paris church) and the orchestral playing is notable for some strong brass contributions. There are other recordings of these Poulenc works to consider; but given the idiomatic performances you get here for such a low price, this is well worth your consideration.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good for the price.......2005-12-13

I bought this cd at Tower Record, before I had internet access and could look music up by the song on Amazon. Not a bad recording. I really enjoy "Ye Holy Angels Bright," which is a nice, clear, beautiful recording and arrangement. The Schubert "Sanctus" is beautiful, also. I initially bought this for the Randall Thompson "Alleluia". This may not be the very best recording of the "Alleluia" floating around, but it is very moving. Listen to a variety of clips before you purchase this - there is a wide variety of voice styles on this c.d.
