Amazon.com essential recording
Some would argue that this is the last great Bowie album, and certainly his only great album of the '80s. While it lacked the bite of its punk brethren at the time, it appealed to some fans of that genre and to middle-of-the-road rockers as well. Muscular playing met with no-frills production, and the product as a whole was infused with a gloriously arty style. "It's No Game (Part I)" opens the album, and is sung in Japanese, and "It's No Game (Part II)" closes, in English. New York punker Tom Verlaine even contributed a track ("Kingdom Come"), and "Scream Like a Baby" tells a dark and violent story with a howl. The drug-oriented "Ashes to Ashes" confesses that Major Tom was a junky while sounding all sleek and alluring, and the dance floor hit "Fashion" took aim at its very subject. The crowning jewel is the title track, with Robert Fripp's guitar ripping the place up at a relentless pace. It's been a long time since Bowie sounded this inspired. --Lorry Fleming

Scary Monsters.......2007-05-08
David Bowie-Scary Monsters ****
Released in 1980, David Bowies Scary Monsters became one of his biggest and most popular albums to date. Expanding even further on his new wave sound which he and Iggy Pop helped to invent some four years before this album. The album helped to usher Bowie into the 1980's a decade that would serve Bowie highs higher then he had seen before and lows lower then he had seen before.
Scary Monsters is an album of ideas and creativity. Some of Bowies most inspired and original work appears on this album showcasing early influences for many of the alternative bands to imerge during the decade. The lyrics on the album are more then just simple lyrics, they are really the vocal point of the album which is a first for a Bowie album. He has always been known as an amaznig lyricist but Scary Monsters secured him as among the best.
The line up of musicians is amazing with guest apperances from the great Pete Townshend, King Crimson leader and guitar virtuoso Robert Fripp, as well as piano great Roy Bittan, and legend Tony Visconti, but the phenomonal Tom Verlaine of Television lent his hands at some of the albums lyrics.
'Its No Game (Part 1)' is a strange song, but actually a great way to open the album being as it is a little strange as a whole. With no chorus or really a hook for the matter the song is sung in strange octives and features lots of Janpanese spoken word inbetween verses. No other song would have started the album better. Also contains great socialy concious lyrics. 'Up The Hill Backwards' is very child hood sing-along. While once again the lyrics are great they loose their effect being performed over such nursery ryhme music and in a sing-along way. The track is take it or leave it. The title track 'Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)' is one of the best songs on the album. With a very different sound and though the song sounds very 80's it still has a great appeal. 'Ashes To Ashes' is easily the best song on the album and one of Bowies all time best songs. Fantastic keyboard and minimal drumming make the mood of the song soom very errie. The lyrics are some of the best ever written in history. Part two of the contiueing sega of 'Major Tom.' In this sequal to the original we find out that 'Major Tom' is not in space at all but mearly strung out on Heroin. A great song, truly a classic. 'Fashion' is one of the most inventive songs of Bowies career. Combining some incredible guitar playing from Fripp and a new wave feel and sound that would revolutionize the comming decade. 'Teenage Wildlife' may contain the very best lyrics Bowie has ever written. The vocal delivery is so heart felt and emotional that you truly understand and feel what he is trying to convey. The guitar work from Fripp is inspired and complaments the lyrics perfectly. One of the most honest and truly geniune songs ever written. 'Scream Like A Baby' is almost a hard rocker. Slightly intence with some restraint as too not get way out of controle. 'Kingdom Come' is a song that was written by Tom Verlaine of Television and it is so clear when you hear it beacuse it totaly sounds as if it would fit in on the bands debut. A great perfomance from Bowie here. 'Because Your Young' features lead guitar from Pete Townshend which adds to the song and makes it better. Other then the guitar this is not one of the better songs on the album, in fact the album may have been stronger had it been left off. Closing the album is 'Its Not Game (Part 2)' which is nothing like part one which opens the albums. This is much more laid back. A calm after the store or more like a cigerette after a night cap is more in line. A great tune to end the album nicly and ease the listener away.
Scary Monsters is not the best album that David Bowie ever recorded but from the 1980's this is the best he has to offer. The music is phenomonal, this is an album you will never get bored with or grow old of. The artwork in the case of the album is worth the price of the album alone, usualy I dont comment on the artwork but it is truly breath taking. So for those how are looking at this you are sligtly interested and that is a good enough reason to buy the album if this review wasnt reason enough.
Bowie - Scary Monsters.......2007-03-09
It still amazes me how Bowie thinks up some of the sounds and riffs used in this album. The second half of it I can't get into much but the first half is awesome! "Ashes to Ashes" rode the charts at number 1 for ages as did the album.
The mastering is great too.
It features obscure lead guitar by Robert Fripp and Pete Townsend played and contributed to one of the tracks. It's harsh in sound compared to Bowie's more recent work.
Bowie and a ton of cool guitar.......2006-11-19
I'm a guitar fan and this is a most enjoyable Bowie cd, especially because of the guitars.
There are some gem songs like "Ashes to Ashes", "Its No Game", "Fashion" and "Kingdom Come". However, the real highpoint here is the incredible and extremely innovative musicianship.
Bowie took eccentric lyrics, unusual time signatures and then applied stellar and inventive musicians to color these songs. I believe Robert Fripp and Adrien Below were the featured guitar players.
Check out the strange, angular guitar runs on "Fashion"
After this album he went way too commercial. With the exception of thrusting Stevie Rae Vaughn into the limelight, I do not like what Bowie did after this in the 1980's.
The better of the post 1970 recordings........2006-11-14
I really like David Bowies' 1970 recordings along with 1 or 2 of the later recordings and Scary Monsters is one of them. I believe this recording is an important addition to any record collection that includes David Bowie.
Michael A Cicchi.
Brilliant album but not for everone.......2006-07-09
This album is an absolutly brilliant album, however as with most things brilliance is relative. All though far more people fell in love with this album than probably even Bowie himself expected the truth is this album was never met for mass consumption on any real level. Just because there is a reference to major Tom doesn't mean that this album was a return to the pop music Bowie produced in the early 70's. This is album is when Bowie finaly became comfortable with his past drug addiction. It is Bowie happy being Bowie all though it would not last through the '80s. If you are a hardcore Bowie fan and enjoy albums That have greater focus on the big picture than on the individual songs pick this up I promise you will not be disapointed. If not then simply pop in Ziggy Stardust again and enjoy there's something for everyone where Bowie's involved.

SKSK rock.......2007-03-15
I stumbled upon this band during their tour with Mest, and I must say I was immediately impressed. Its not often that you see a band these days with a different sound, and I can assure you that SKSK is unlike other things you've heard recently. After having listened to both their albums I can assure you that SKSK have grown and matured into the band they are today, and you can only expect things to get better.
Great Album.......2007-02-09
I really like this cd a lot and I am looking forward to seeing them live.
Not complete garbage but not worth the money.......2006-07-27
Just to clear up a few descrepancies, this band is not emo and no, "emo" does not JUST mean "emotional" in terms of music. If "emo" meant "emotional music" then everything from Jewel to Luther Vandross to Barry White would be "emo". The term was coined in the late 80s and means "emotive hardcore". but regardless, this band is not emo. And please don't compare this band to Chiodos just for the simple fact that both bands have a keyboard player. That is their only similarity and comparing them just isn't fair.
Even I'll admit that when I first heard this band I liked them. I enjoyed their simple style and catchy keyboards. But the more I listened to them, the more I came in touch with the actual value and quality of these songs. What bothers me most is the lyrics. Lyrically, this band is defintely below-average. They are so full of immature teen angst that they make me believe he wrote these songs when he was a scrawny, pubescent 13 yr old. There is absolutely no depth so if you are a lyrics person than this band is NOT for you. The second thing is the guitars. This band produces the same cheesy riffs as any other band out there. Infact, the riff at the very beginning of "The Only Medicine" sounds exactly like something Avenged Sevenfold put out a couple years back! Again, it's their lack of creativity and originality that makes this band only a few steps away from being the next Good Charlotte or Limp Bizkit (creatively-wise. I'm not actually comparing the bands) Basically, if you are into really good THOUGHTFUL music the only reason why you'd keep listening is because its "catchy". But before you grab your wallet and run out to get this CD rememeber that "catchy" isn't always a good thing. After the first couple times of listening to this CD you are bored to death because the songs have become so predictable.
Bottom line = If you are wanting some really good creative music with a lot of originality and lyrics that aren't almost humorous, then use your money to buy something good like "Translating the Name" by Saosin, or "All's Well That Ends Well" by Chiodos or "Juturna" by Circa Survive. Granted those bands don't have much in common with Scary Kids, but trust me, that is a good thing.
But, if you are just looking for some cathy music that requires no active brain use to comprehend, or looking for something to play in the background of a party then pick up this CD used for like 6.99 or 7.99. Or just download it for free at [...] That would be your best bet instead of wasting your money.
A few notable tracks..........2006-04-20
I heard about these guys through PureVolume and I was impressed with the song "A Breath of Sunshine". I went out and bought the CD cheap for ten bucks at Coconuts. Not a bad deal. But I wouldn't spend more than that on it. This is the kind of music that could be considered 'emo', even though I hate that term and try not to use it, since technically all music has emotion and is therefore 'emo'. But my point is, if you don't like that screamo punk style, this album isn't for you.
Overall this was an enjoyable album in my opinion. I think the best tracks were "A Breath of Sunshine", "The World As We Know It", and "The Bright Side of Suffering". They are pleasing to the ear, and maintain a punky sound without being annoying or "over-screaming".
However, then there's "Faith in the Knife". Guh. My least favorite track. Just look at the title. Love life, dude. i.e.-Bad lyrics, IMO.
I'd say just listen to the clips and individually download the ones you like, unless you can pick up this album for under 10 dollars.
Pretty amazing concerning..........2006-03-15
Scary Kids Scaring Kids has definitely improved from their After Dark EP, their music definitely sounds more professional, and the screaming sounds better. They are pretty amazing concerning some the (...)scremo bands out now such as hawthorne hights(gay). IF you are a fan however of silverstein, old A static Lullaby, underoath or chiodos(amazing scremo or whatever-core bands) you will love these album. The singing isn't annoying, they are good muscians, and the screaming isn't overdone. So My advice is to listen to a couple songs and if you like it definitely go buy it.

Great for the Halloween night!!!.......2007-01-12
Great music, exclusively music from the movies. I used it to scare off the kids at night when treak-or-treatin. Only the classics included!!!
Average collection of cover tunes........2005-10-13
I've had reasonable luck with Laserlight's Halloween CDs, introducing me to such artist as Screaming Lord Sutch, the Undertakers, and a couple of other minor groups popular for Halloween-themed music.
By comparisson, this CD is a relative disappointment, featuring covers of spooky movie and TV themes.
Friday the 13th gets butchered the worst, with Exorcist following close behind, primarily by being about a minute to long, and the Twilight Zone is way too funky.
Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street fare the best, followed by Jaws and X-files. The rest are tributes to mediocrity.
For Wal-Mart's price of under four dollars, it's a decent deal, but I certainly couldn't recommend spending any more than that for it.
Not bad for the price.......2005-02-16
It's a mediocre collection of horror movie music. Not bad for the price, but it sounds a bit too synthesizery.
Blah!.......2003-08-11
Some of them sound like the original recording.
Others sound like MIDI tracks burned to CD. With such a good lineup of movies (sans X-Files), I was thoroughly disappointed at how "synthy" it sounds.
To get this CD all you have to do is use your favorite search engine and type "midi and horror".
I want my $$ back.
Horror muzak for parties........2002-11-08
If you are looking for a solid collection of classic horror themes recreated as heard in the movies, then you had better look elsewhere. This collection is not for you. Various musicians either play respectable covers of classic themes (i.e. The Exorcist or Halloween) or completely slaughter them with poppy covers. Harry Manfredini's already silly disco-pop theme to Friday the 13th Part 3 is destroyed so badly you would think that Jason Voorhees himself had stomped into the recording studio. Fans of pure, play it like it sounded in the movie recordings will be disappointed.

Great BAND!! Great Everything!!.......2005-10-22
Yes, That is too bad that some reviewers do not actually listen to the CD's before they say such harsh things. This is a great Arizona Band. Full of depth and creativity. Lyrics that can make you think for days, and music that you just want to hear again and again!
They will have a long and successful career. They are not fake or phony! Just a great group of talented musicians doing what they do best, making Awesome Music.
Thor Maillet is a loser.......2005-08-03
Thor Maillet just likes to take his anger out on bands he hates, as you can see, he doesnt listen to anything of this "genre" and decided it would be sweet to write revies about things he doesnt listen to. Good Job Loser!
This is a great CD from a great band, I would however suggest that you purchase this seperately from their actuall full lenght album, as the two are quite differant, you may like one but not the other.
(...)
Great new sound.......2005-05-02
Coming out of this farely new and prosperous Arizona scene (The Bled, Greeley Estates, etc.) SKSK bring a great diverse sound to
the screamo,emo-core, or whatever nomenclature for the scene you prefere. Three guitar attack, screams from every front, synthesizers, and melodic vocals make the After Dark EP a compelling listen. If your into this genre I highly recommend. If not, still give these guys a listen, they are doing some pretty compelling stuff that should not be ignored.
so amazing it's scary.......2005-03-27
This band is absolutely amazing. The very first time I heard "What's Up Now" I was left absolutely breathless. The snyth adds an amazing touch to that song as well as the entire EP. I was lucky enough to discover them way back when they had the entire EP up for download on their website because they didn't think anyone would take them seriously. These guys are writing the music they love and they don't care what or who is popular, they wanna rock everyone's faces off. Prepare to be blown away.

Controlled chaos.......2005-05-23
From the opening verses sung in Japanese, there's a distinct sense that something dark and sinister is going on just beneath the surface of this record. It's a very visual album, and as Bowie takes the listener through this journey, he confronts his psychological shadow head on over and over again, ultimately gaining control over it. This is apparent in the arrangement of the songs, especially with Robert Fripp's barely controlled guitar work. Between Fripp and Carlos Alomar, it's as if Bowie had unleashed two deadly snakes from a wicker basket, only to coax them back at the very last second before allowing them to do any harm. Chronologically, Scary Monsters came after the Berlin trilogy albums of the mid to late '70s, which marked the peak of Bowie's experimental period. As he confesses in 'Ashes to ashes', he apparently wasn't just experimenting musically on those previous albums, but also with heroin (and God only knows what other strange drugs). This may very well be the last of Bowie's truly classic and timeless albums from beginning to end. The SACD version is well worth getting, as it adds another dimension to a spectacular recording.
Punched in the gut.......2004-05-06
That's how you'll feel when you crank up the bass on this SACD. This is a hybrid disc, so you can play it on regular CD players as well, but to get the full audio range you'll need a SACD player. I'll say it again - SACD and DSD remind me of playing a brand new audiophile vinyl record - there's just something else there that CD can't provide, and SACD blows the doors off of DVD-A. So even if you don't have a SACD player, buy this copy now and hang on to it until you do get one. You can't go wrong with a disc that has "Ashes to Ashes" and "Fashion," and the incredible guitar work of Robert Fripp.
Absolute Must Have!!.......2003-11-29
I will save the long drawn out review of one of Bowie's finest and just say that you will not believe sound quality in super audio and the price is excellent. Bowie is known for quality output of his catalog and I look forward to next batch.

Product Description
This kaleidoscopic art pop concept album harkens back to the days of Sgt. Pepper and its brethren, combining undeniably catchy melodies and innovative songcraft with sweeping arrangements and a gloriously eccentric imagination. Recorded by Bryan Scary alone in his Brooklyn apartment, "The Shredding Tears" is a true original, a fuming new vision of rock's potential, and essential listening for fans of The Beatles, The Move, XTC, and The Fiery Furnaces.

Simply amazing!.......2007-07-19
I was typing a whole huge review of this and then I found this article that summed it up perfectly:
While it is true that Scary's stylistic approach, both instrumentally and vocally, is comparable to a vast number of classic pop artists, this obstacle in becoming a notable innovator is merely a component that should be overlooked to get the most out of The Shredding Tears. Those who expect complete innovation in every modern release are of a foolish nature. Music is an art that has lasted thousands of years and with each passing year it becomes more difficult to push creativity to a new level without being labeled as outdated. Despite the unavoidable comparisons, the most impressive aspect about Scary that causes him to stand apart from the generic mold is, simply, his natural ability to write a memorable pop song. Apart from the drums, Scary writes, sings, and plays all the instruments in every song on The Shredding Tears. Personally, he is one of the most talented musicians I have stumbled across in the past few years. While his multi-instrumental ability is extremely impressive, it is his songwriting that shines with the most brilliance. The majority of the tracks contained on the album implement a similar approach with an emphasis on unavoidable hooks, mostly dragged on by vocal melodies and piano-laden key changes. Scary's most attributable instrument is the piano, also the one that he has clearly mastered to the most significant degree. Incorporating a variety of electric guitars and keys is the norm throughout The Shredding Tears. Solos on both fronts are supplemented by a variety of production effects, whether it be the throwback shrill organ in "Mrs. Gracy's Revenge!" or the contemporary usage of synths in "Misery Loves Company". It appears safe to say that Scary is a knowledgeable student of successful pop music. He flawlessly incorporates the techniques of past artists like The Beatles and Queen into his own creative approach, resulting in an album that pushes the limits of present-day virtuosity and musical aptitude.

SIMPLY BORING.......2007-04-17
THE REAL REASON YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS CD IS YOU READ THE REVIEWS THAT THIS IS THE NEXT SGT.PEPPERS.AM I RIGHT?WELL THAT IS THE REASON I BOUGHT THIS CD MYSELF.I HAVE BEEN A BEATLE FAN SINCE 1964 AND HAVE BEEN WASTING TIME AND MONEY LOOKING FOR THE NEXT GREAT BEATLEISH ALBUM.GOOD ONES ARE HARD TO FIND FOLKS AND THIS ISN'T A GOOD ONE.IF YOU TRUST MY JUDGEMENT AND WANT A SGT.PEPPERS TYPE CD, SILVER SUNSHINE OR KLAATU 3:47 EST ARE GOOD CHOICES.IF YOU WANT A CD THAT SOUNDS LIKE THE BEATLES 64-65 GET LOCKSLEY.ANY OF THESE YOU WON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY AND CAN LISTEN TO WITHOUT SNORING.
Spectacular..........2007-03-07
Love it... Such a spectacular fusion of sounds, but without the fuzzy muddled vibe. The album has it's own direction and character and more than does justice to the various inspirations that seem to have gone into it's creation. Fantastic!
Best album of 2006.......2007-01-03
Ok, let's get this out of the way: you can hear influences of Sgt. Pepper, Frank Zappa, theatre rock, glam rock, prog rock, mix in some kazoos, some heavy lyrics, add just a hint of bubblepunk and enjoy.
How ironic that the most ORIGINAL sound of the year has so many tags to it? It's because you really need to HEAR it. It's not a mish mash of sounds, it adds up to a completely inventive experience. You'll be amazed at the sheer audacity of the songwriting ambition and yet...it's really fun and catchy.
Tracks #1&2 are passable, but after that buckle up for the ride. "Operaland", "Mrs. Gracy's Revenge", "Ceiling on the Wall", "Blood Club" and "Bottom of the Grave" are excellent on their own, but this album works the best as a cohesive whole.
A wonderful CD gapping styles and sounds together into a truly unique and enjoyable experience.
THE Best Album of 2006.......2006-12-06
I haven't been able to take this absolute masterpiece from going repeat for the past month, it's seriously been the only thing I've been listening to. Every song is beautifully crafted with delicate precision, huge hooks, and a lot of those loud "DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN..." parts, you know what I'm talking about. Singing is quiant and so is the music even though the lyrics are mainly on the darker side. Average time of each song is about 4 minutes each. Perfect opener and closer, the closer is what makes me want to listen over again, I think, just how it slowly fades the album away and then the beginning fades it back in.
STRONGLY recommended for fans of Sgt. Pepper.

Unbelievable! .......2007-03-19
As an album, this is absoutely amazing. But as an EP, this is unbelievable.
I'm finding it difficult to describe this album in words. All that I can reccomend doing is listening to it. Describing such an amazing piece of music would be near-impossible. The climaxes found in Enjoy Eternal Bliss (ESPECIALLY the one found in We Flood Empty Lakes) is enough to make your jaw drop. I'm 100% serious.
I may have to order this, as it was sent over the internet by a friend. This is too good of an album not to own.

Super Charger Hell.......2002-07-29
This tribute shows some different interpretations of White Zombie songs. Like one, Shockwerks awesome cover of "More Human Than Human" it brings in some elctectronica, while letting the distortian be used as the main riff (agreeing with other reviewer). Another awesome song definately is Silent Stream of Godless Elegy's cover of "Blood,Milk, and Sky" This cover is incredible. I definately liked Habeas Corpus' and Disarray's Hardcore covers of the songs "Grindhouse A Go-Go" and "Blur The Technicolor" A song that took a while to grow on me (now i appreciate) is Mind Phaser's cover of "El Phantasmo" It is completely different and although it is very good, most people will probaly not like this track, but see for yourself, it might grow on you. Anyways, This tribute is worthy of getting if you want to complete the White Zombie collection, and dont just let it sit and collect dust, because this tribute album is very worth of play.
Super Charger Hell (Hell, Yeah!).......2002-05-28
The first question that comes to mind when I heard about this release is: Is White Zombie worthy enough of a tribute album? Seeing as the band never really accumilated much hits, had only 4 records, and that they had officially broken up years ago. Well, they did it, although tributes should be spent on other artists that truly deserve it (i.e. Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, STP, to name a few). I'm not much of a big White Zombie fan, but after listening to this whole tribute, I must say it's not bad. This album is strict metal, not the [bad] techno-based filth you get on other so-called 'tributes' to metal bands. Many of the tracks sound very similar to the original track, some heavier and some a slight less, so this tribute should be satisfying to Zombie fans who want to hear their songs with a slightly different twist. "More Human Than Human" was done really well, and rather than imitating the main chorus guitar riff, they decided to take it out and let the distortion/bass be the main riff, which was a good move. "Thunderkiss 65'" was done exactly like the original, and I guess it was good not to mess around the original, but the main wonder is if this was really done by 'Catch 22'? The pop/punk band. Other great covers on this disc were of "Black Sunshine", "Super Charger Heaven" and "Warp Asylum". However, the song that got me the most was "Blood Milk Sky" redone by the band 'Silent Stream of Godless Elegy', their version by far outdoes the original. The only weak tracks I can say are "El Phantasmo", "Blur The Technicolor", "Grindhouse A Go Go" and "Creature Of The Wheel", they came off really poor. Overall, this CD really rocks, it's a very metallic tribute and I would place it on the side of good tribute albums.
It was different..........2002-04-02
For loyal White Zombie fans, it was something new to listen to. But, you can see why there was not much publicity about its release. Most of the bands mutilated the original version of the song. I would get this one, only if you are bored out of your mind and can't find the originals!
Use your own styles"tribute".......2000-05-31
Half of the songs sound pretty good but the other half seem to be sung in the note of drunk.... they are all mostly trying to sound like Rob Zombie and come short to having any of their own styles added. Its a nice cd to have if you just like Zombie and like other people doing their thing the their songs...but the over all, just buy the real Zombie.

Great compilation.......2007-02-07
I though I owned all the Halloween music to be found. But this one has some new ones and old ones done differently. I highly recommend it.
Good memories spoilt.......2006-12-27
The title of the CD is "Scary" but don't be fooled. The only thing frightening is that someone might be suckered by the reputation of the conductor and some fond childhood memories into spending good money for this crud.
While there are a couple of admirable tributes to classic horror theme songs, the cheesy vocals on Addams Family, Ghostbusters, Monster Mash, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Beware of the Blob and Thriller relegate this disc to the trash bin.
Instead of this, I'd recommend Nosferatu (James Bernard), Chiller (Cincinnati Pops), Fantastic Journey (Cincinnati Pops, also - more SciFi than horror, though) and Classics From the Crypt (RCA Victor). All available here.
Superbly Bizarre.......2005-03-03
All I can say is wow- kitschy and delightful in a way. Though the "Thriller" is disturbing. But how can you deny the "Killer Tomatoes"? I mean, how can you??
