A must for anyone who enjoys a Wind Ensemble.......2004-07-28

I've had the pleasure of working with Mallory when she was at USF. Listening to this recording not only brought back many fond memories but the passion she's able to get from her group is certainly heard in this recording. David Maslanka is a challenge to pull off well, and this group did his work justice. Great job Mallory!

Excellent.......2003-05-24

In my library are many wind band recordings. I own several Eastman Wind Ensemble recordings from the "old days", some new ones too. Many new recordings of groups performing at CBDNA conventions, etc. are also here and there in my home. This recording of Northwestern's Wind Ensemble is superb. The treatment of Maslanka's Child's Garden of Dreams is remarkable. I have been a Maslanka fan for many years, I own three recordings of this particular work, and this band has done a remarkable job of transferring the feeling of that piece to CD. Buy it. I just hope you have a good set of headphones to enjoy it.

Excellent Concert Band CD.......2003-01-27

Malory Thompson's effort with the Keystone Wind Ensemble in tribute to John Payntor is moving and reflective.
The opening Wagner piece, "Huldigungsmarch," comes across with a stately, noble feeling, which breaks away to more thundering passions at all the right moments.
Camphouse's "Whatsoever Things" was commissioned by the Ravelli foundation in honor of Payntor. It is reflective and sensitive, borrowing the theme from Haydn's St. Anthony's chorale, which Northwestern (Payntor's teaching post) uses for its motto. Camphouse's melodies (made unique through the use of atypical but elegant melodic rhythms) and brilliant orchestration are used to their fullest by Thompson in this performance.
David Maslanka's "A Child's Garden of Dreams" is also wonderful. He manages to evoke the intimacy of chamber ensembles using different sections of the concert band, and explores exotic, ear-catching timbres using a few instruments at a time. This piece has a much more contemporary feel than anything else on the CD and is worth considerable study for composers.
The last Wagner piece, "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral" is another solid performance.

When looking for "the most".......2001-05-14

A local New York professional opera enthusiast has concluded that Corelli is the most popular operatic tenor, followed by Jussi Bjoerling. But if the question is, who had the most beautiful tenor voice ever impressed upon wax, we must lift up John McCormack. Here is true bel canto which no one else has ever equalled. These two CD's contain some of the most exquisite sounds ever issued by a human throat. Let the galleries declare their enthusiasm for stentorian high C's, the real lover of great singing will find much more to their like her than in all the verisssimo arias. Listen to the two "Mefistofele" Arias (Boito) and ask yourself if they have ever since been so beautifully sung. This recording belongs in the collection of every aspiring tenor, just to remind what can be accomplished by art and perfect singing.

A superb McCormack collection.......2000-10-21

If you remember hearing transfers of acoustic recordings to LP, you remember how hard it was to really connect with the music and performer through all the rumble, noise and resonance. This audio restoration is the most astonishing technical feat I have ever heard. The noise is now only a gentle background presence, not the roar of yesteryear. And even more important, it is constant in volume- in other words not a distraction. The fidelity really lets us hear what the early recording engineers really achieved. That said, what this brings to us are the performances of one of the world's greatest singers in richly emotional popular songs (and a few opera arias). There are so many of those old sentimental pieces no one could get away with recording anymore, but hold such a splendid reward for those of us who love them. John McCormack's recordings receive with this reissue the wonderful presentation they so richly deserve. Many many thanks to the label and Mr. Marston who made it possible.

Simply the Best.......2000-01-27

This along with Vol. 1 is simply the best McCormack transfers available from this period. The master of the trade, Ward Marston has outdone himself this time. Waiting for Vols. 3,4,5!

Deeply satisfying music.......2002-04-03

I first heard Maslanka's Symphony No. 2, 3rd Movement performed by the Wichita State University Band several years ago and immediately fell in love with it. I've somehow managed to damage the CD and I'm gladly replacing it today. I highly recommend this CD not only for the incredible music itself, but also for what I feel is the intensity of the performance, the strength of the soloists and ensemble, and the deep sense of soul they bring to their music. If you're looking for a flawless performance, buy something by the Eastman Wind Ensemble or one of their many equals. If you haven't performed music of this type and caliber, it's easy to nit-pick the infrequent performance problems on this recording. If you're fortunate enough to have been part of a close-knit ensemble and enjoy modern wind music, this is a disc you must own.

Child's Garden of Dreams.......2000-11-02

This pretty much is a must have for anyone serious about good band music. A Child's Garden of Dreams is probably one of the best pieces of band literature ever written. Very fun to play also.
