Some tough argument but well constructed works............2006-12-27

Not for the faint of heart, the Williamson is a rather severe work with nary a bright moment in it. Probably the most successful movement is the second, which is the most tonal and immediately appealing. The finale is jaunty and jarring with a Bartokian drive, performed to perfection here! Althought the one movement Sculthrope is arguably too long (23 minutes!!!), I did find the ecstatic ending very moving. Elsewhere the work wanders a bit, but is full of pianistic and orchestral color in a mildly dissonant fabric. The performances and recording are excellent, and I have a funny feeling this CD won't be available for an extended period of time!
